I find a lot of the reviews here rather ironic. Currently, i've read up to chapter 200, and I can't say that this applies to all the subsequent chapters, so this review is only for the first 200. As mentioned earlier, a good chunk of the story isn't actual treasure hunting, as in going into caves or temples or what not, its basically a storage auction where you buy storage units at an auction, and hope like hell there's something decent in it. Obviously, it's not going to be named... more>> Storage Auction Tycoon, because that would suck.

IMHO, with his particular abilities, the MC could have done almost any other thing and still gotten rich, but went down the storage auction path because of plot related reasons.

First and foremost, I'm Chinese, and I was born in Guangzhou, however I was fortunate enough in that I managed to escape their brainwashing since I didn't have to grow up there as my dad was an expat in Singapore. Subsequent to that, I headed to the U.S. For my graduate and post graduate studies. Which is why I say that a lot of the reviews here seem to be rather ironic.

As a Chinese who is aware of people's perception of us, and an immigrant to the US, who is equally aware of the American's perception of us, I can state without any bias, that a lot of what the author wrote here is perfectly authentic, barring some of the more bizarre scenes. It might offend some of the readers here into posting 1 star reviews, but there you go. You might not think you do it, but as someone watching from the outside, I'll honestly say that yes, a lot of you actually really do act like selfish, racist a**holes. It's a bit more exaggerated here, since real life humans tend to be a bit more subtle (cowardly), so it's unlikely there would have been a fight, or even emphasis on face slapping, but hey, in a story about a bunch of idiots gambling their luck on storage sales of all things, you kinda need a hook right? Especially since this was written for Chinese readers in the first place, else it'd be horrifically boring. The first antagonist alone, with his little yellow dogs comment, I've seen and met dozens of times, and ironically, most of them I met in church. I won't deny that there are some really great people I met there, but that doesn't offset the rest.

There's also a rather peculiar trend where the author tries to hype up the subject at hand, like the first was a massage chair of all things, and the second was a harley davidson bike. A lot of it went over my head as incomprehensible chatter of industry insiders, but basically the author made it sound like it was the most important thing ever, but it came across as particularly artificial.

The dialogue is also strangely stiff, and the people talk like they are rehearsing from a script at times, with perfect grammar, overdone accents etc.

Minor issues aside, the story is actually surprisingly intriguing for a bunch of auction gamblers and pretty well written without any of the usual young master nonsense. So far romance is practically non-existent, short and awkwardly written, but since this is written by a Chinese author, i'll take it as just another feature of Chinese literature. <<less

The synopsis is actually nowhere near being descriptive of what this novel is.

I expected some variation on xuanhuan about someone reincarnated into a world where he hunts mystical treasures. Well, nothing could be further from the truth.

This is a novel about a Chinese college student living in Flagstaff, AZ and the 'treasure hunting' done in this novel is the kind that the US-based television show "Storage Hunters" show. People who bid on abandoned self-storage rooms, where they can either find junk or an actual hidden treasure.

Having said that, I read... more>> all the negative criticism on this novel, and for the most part, they're all true:

1). This is not about realistic life of a Chinese MC in the US, it's about what a Chinese writer believes life would be for said MC, if the writer had never actually lived in the US. All, if not most, of the American characters are basically 2D representations of what Chinese people believe Americans are like, and has no semblance to reality. This is strange for a story rooted in a real-life location and present day.

2). The palpable paranoia and inferiority-complex of the Chinese (from China) feel of themselves is palpable, and the perceived slap-to-face is augmented here, despite the fact that the story happens in the US, where face-slaps aren't really all that big of a deal.

3). It's anther hint of the Chinese mentality being unintentionally (or is that intentionally) revealed here, which is that the only way they believe someone could succeed in life is by having a 'cheat, ' which this story has, as well.

4). The thinly-veiled view of the US as a nation of colonialist pigs who live for nothing but to keep China down is there, all the way through. I know that this is indoctrinated to every Chinese child at the earliest possibility, and it's hard to overcome for a society like theirs, but I'm surprised that a nation of otherwise fairly intelligent people still believe in the over-simplification of "Chinese: good, American and Japanese; bad." But, there it is, all over the novel.

5). It's extremely repetitive, as it's about one man having all the luck, and all of his opponents constantly getting pummeled and losing money, a capital sin in Chinese culture apparently.

Yup, it's all there.

Why did I give it 3 stars, you ask? Very simple:

After reading a couple of dozen of the xuanhuan novels, I've finally discovered that they're all the same novel with interchangeable MC's, bad-guys, and basically a re-hash and blatant plagiarism of each other's work that it's very difficult to tell which one is the 'patient zero' of these things.

This novel is, as crazy and weird as it is, different.

For a web-publisher like Qidian, whom is trying to make money by publishing what otherwise wouldn't be fit to commit to print, variety, a valiant attempt no matter how feeble, to produce 'different' is commendable. (And yes, I just gave Qidian a compliment, there's no need to write me hate-mail)

So there it is. I sincerely doubt that I will get ti finish this novel, as I can foresee the onset of acute apathy coming on, as soon as this thing jumps the shark, or when Qidian starts going premium with it, but for now, I'm at least reading.

There's my two cents. Happy reading! <<less

I tried so hard to ignore the idiocy of this novel because it's premise is pretty good but I pretty quickly reached the point of which I couldn't bring myself to keep reading it. It has pretty 2D characters and it's plot goes in a straight line.

The racism is what really got me.

Overall I thought it was pretty well done if not for the constant bits of idiocracy that the Author wrote in to degrade "America", I stopped many times to simply wonder if the Author even googled what sorts... more>> of things were in America. It had so much racism that it seemed like the Chinese government itself commissioned the Novels creation to degrade the Chinese people's opinions of America.

Whatever you get my point. If it is based in a country try and accurately portray the country. <<less

I'm guessing that most of the negatives about this story are more opposed to qidian, then the story. While it certainly has it's problems, (racism, mostly) overall it's pretty good. I also like that it's set in the us.

Thus far it's a rather entertaining mindless read. Definitely not worth 5 stars but fun enough to get 4.

This novel is fantastic! New concept and great delivery. I love it especially since I like watching all those shows that have to do with storage unit buying. Also the cat is just so f*cking cute!

Now about the comments on the racism (Just so you know, I live in Florida. So I know a lot about racism). This novel's racism is really tame. Out of ten with one being the least racist anyone could be and ten being the most, I would give this novel like a 3. This means... more>> I don't consider it as racism, at least not really. First of all, there is none of the really bad names, I'm not going to mention them but if you live in America, then you know what words I mean. Second, the only reason I can see this being racist is because some of the characters don't take Li Du seriously cause he is Chinese and they are somewhat a**holes. But that doesn't make this novel bad, it just has a sense of realism. Third, if you think this is racist, then you are gonna have a hard time living anywhere in America, do you have any idea how many people I meet on a regular basis at my job that are full blown 10s (see my comparison above) ? I'm talking giving dirty looks, saying the N-word and similar words right to the guys I work with and almost hitting them for just looking at them. Guess what, I work in a retail pool store.

So for the people giving this novel bad reviews for the racism, WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!!!????? It sucks but racism is still out there and you're just going to have to deal with it. I like this novel for its realistic stand point. To the author and translator...... Thank You!??? <<less

The racist stuff bothers me because it's obvious the writer knows nothing about Americans. I'd say at least half of all American's have mixed blood in one way or another. I myself have Native American, Irish, German, and a touch of Mexican and most of the people I know have at least two ethnicities in their background. I'm not saying there aren't any racists here because there are plenty, there are as*holes in every country, but depicting the entire country as racist pricks is too much for me. Also the... more>> whole losing face stuff doesn't matter so much here, survival is way more important than something like honor or face, so the face-slapping is out of place. This story reeks of blatant nationalistic Chinese propaganda. <<less

FIVE STARS!!!

Although, this is not a traditional Chinese webnovel, I am especially impressed because of this novel's accurate and unbiased depiction of American culture and lifestyle. This author has definitely spent some time in the US.

For the racism concern of this novel, I think it is an interesting concept to bring it up. For people who do believe that racism doesn't exists, it does everywhere especially in USA. If you watch the USA news, you can always find some racism things weekly... Anyway, it is also the environment that determines that racial bias is more prominent. You can stood out by just being different. You can be born in America, live all your life in America, but still be perceived as Chinese based on the... more>> color of your skin. Treat this book as fiction based on real facts. The background information is really useful you know. Don't treat it as fillers. The author puts some efforts in searching to make this more realistic, so please respect him for his efforts and enriching your general knowledge. <<less

it's funny how panda-kun view of America is that theres no racism and it's a utopia. It's hilarious.

I've lived in America and the racism I've encountered in the US is real.

While waiting for my uber, I've been insulted by old white men for no reason and the movement by the minorities is very real and it's not against something that is imaginary. That said, it wasn't as much as the MC encountered but it has probably something to do with the circumstances he meets people.

anyway like people have said, this... more>> is storage wars for the first 200 chapters then it moves into ruins diving. Sadly it cannot get better without diving into fiction and it does, which is one point people dislike since it's set in the present. You kinda have to adjust that you're not expecting a hero but a guy with a cheat who just keeps on getting richer and richer with no other aim besides to amass insane amounts of money. <<less

As others have said, this is a Chinese guy in the Storage Wars tv shows who's living life with a super bug Cheat. It's a slice of life novel with his partner, some pets, and a girl he has the hots for. Slightly on the boring side for me because I'm more action oriented but others might enjoy it. You might even get multiple chapters of his pets doing stuff.

One of the problems you guys need to be aware of is that the translator keeps messing up on money values,... more>> so you'll get incorrect money amounts like $4 billion when raws are actually $400 million. <<less

I like the novel and it’s well written. The concept is interesting and unlike most novels it’s takes place in America. This is where my one gripe with the novel comes through, it depicts most Americans as racist without any other type of conflict involved. The author makes sure we know they’re bad people by making them racist which is kinda repetitive and has an unrealistic amount of racism in the story with jut about every other character commenting on how he is Chinese. Overall a good story and I... more>> will continue to read, I just wanted to vent over the amount of racism depicted. <<less

A decent story in the slice of life style of writing, with a bit of mystery ability, that's not OP but when well used can be interesting for plot development. There are some weird choices but over makes sense in this setting.

Solid Romance, no s*upid crap, simple, and realistic in terms of communication, and writing.

The BEST part of the novel is honestly the adopted "children/pets" the MC and Wifu get throughout the story that make it interesting.

As usual review based on story itself, and TL quality.

This story has a very interesting topic and I really liked it. A lot of people have commented about racism. Some people say it's the real world and others say it's too much and to be honest-- there are racist people in America. You see it in real life, on TV, and in plenty of other countries. BUT the story goes too far. Basically every antagonist is racist. Every other character has something against Chinese people and the insults at times, aren't things people would actually say in real life.... more>> :/

Spoiler

for goodness sakes. No one denies a Chinese person something for the Korean war... most Americans don't even know the Chinese had anything to do with it.

Also, I have never met a person call a Chinese person 'yellow to there flippin place.

[collapse]

Racism does happen. EVERYWHERE. Not just in America. But the way the story portrays it is seriously... unrelialistic. I can see this happening in some back alley, or bar, or pool store. NOT in every day life.

At times it's not the name calling. (That's actually pretty tame). It's the characterization.

Spoiler

Black people aren't all like what he writes. His white best friend is.... '-'

[collapse]

Great idea, but it's a bit cringey. The racism is poorly overdone and can come as offending to quite a few people. To other reviewers, they're not being blind, but stating how the focal point of the story shouldn't be racist American antagonists. *shrugs* <<less

It's just... not enjoyable. I couldn't even last 10 chapters.

The depiction of America isn't very accurate, and seems to be some amalgamation of second hand stories, internet searches, and propaganda. Which, I mean, I probably wouldn't do any better if I was trying to write a story about an American living in China. But there is just a sense of dissonance and things that grate.

There are little things like: finding a bunch of $1 coins in a drain. $1 coins are just not that commonly used in the US. If... more>> I found a bunch of $1 coins, it would take a moment to recognize them as such, and I'd be a bit surprised. It's not impossible, but it would be notable.

Then there are larger things, which a lot of people have commented on. Racism. I am NOT saying there isn't racism in the US. There definitely is. It's just that is seems to be portrayed a bit... cartoonishly? Like, based on what someone worried about racism would expect to experience, rather than what they would probably encounter in reality. Like being called "Chinese boy" (If I heard someone being called that I would think it is really weird. And more creepy than racist) or "yellow" (definitely racist, but I don't think as common as seen in the story. I think a racist would be more likely to use the word "chink, " if anything).

Frankly, they would be most likely just to be mean or rude. There are a lot of ways that people are racist without simply blatantly name-calling. This is what often makes the racism seem so forced in the story - it always has to be very on the nose. (I can think of so many other things they could have used - ignoring/passing over the MC, making fun of his accent, telling him to "speak English, " ripping him off monetarily, trying to get him in visa trouble, talking about him behind his back, making jokes about stereotypes like driving or math, etc. All very real things that people face with more depth and realism than the "Western Pig" routine. It would even be interesting to see conflict between the MC and someone Asian-American.)

There was also this thing where the MC takes an injured animal to a regular hospital. Um, no. This is clearly just to force an encounter with a hot doctor chick. No regular hospital would treat an animal with their equipment. It's not a matter of convincing the right person; practically they wouldn't have the knowledge of animal anatomy, and more importantly, legally they would not be able to do so. Find some other way to meet your doctor lady. (And yeah, the characterization of women in this story is super chauvinistic, that's really not a surprise at this point).

Then, when you get straight to the story, it's just not very catchy. Like, getting super excited about a second-hand massage chair. The storage-wars stuff is just kind of meh. This story is a hard pass for me. <<less

The writing style of the author mainly focuses on our Chinese MC set in modern America. The style has a bit of mystery and some forms of supernatural.

Spoiler

His ability of a "space bug" is somehow hinted to be apart of the creation of the world.

I would recommend this novel to open-minded people... in other words people who can take the Chinese patriotism and the depiction of racism in American. The offense of violence and danger is reflected through the novel (so be warned) as well the theme of a capitalist is shown throughout (money = power).

The plot development is great and slow paced -> as in the side characters actually have a purpose and explains many historic relics and the history of the American settlement.

However there are plot holes as in his "pets" and the romance theme of the novel. His pets are so exotic, I wonder how they are able to pass boarder security, and his romance with his "wife" is very vague. Towards the start of the novel, the romance of mainly shown, however he later starts to focus on his career and she is now longer in the picture (basically its kinda like she disappears, and only appears in most dangerous situations -_-)

Spoiler

His pets are an: ocelot, raccoon, wolf, honey badger, white alp monkey and finally a falcon - basically how do they all get through hah~~ xD

Our MC is quite ruthless and when he sees the rangers beating the poachers he doesn't say anything. But his wife Sophie who is doctor appears after the dangerous fight is like to him stop them.... The MC cannot do much with the situation as the rangers have permission by the government to kill them sooo.... but they do stop when he asks them to.

May Honest review

First of all the tags should be updated the has a very good romance too which should have been included on the tags. compare to other novels that which full of hypocrite MC's that only thinks of his pen*s and idiotic female leads that is ok to share and be f*ck by the same guy with their friends, boss or whatever. (im bias, I dont like harem type novel its full of sh*t ?)

in this novel for me character relationship and developments is good as well as... more>> the respect when it come to ones religion even though there are issue on racism. the only negative on this novel is that the author projects the villain in every encounter in the story in a typical Chinese villain character which is very rude, arrogant & which have eyes on top of their heads. as for racism I know its quite common in other countries but it was exaggerated in the story just to force a conflict on the scenario and for the story to go on which it become too bland. there are some un answered questions on the novel but anyway, it is what it is and the novel is already finish. The good thing though is that it has a good plot. the MC as well as the supporting characters has good development as well... and ohh.. ah meow, crispy noodles, ah ow, ah bai, ah fei, ali and my favorite ah meng haha those cute but silly guys hope my pets is as intelligent as them ?

all in all as long as you are open minded and can tolerate those racism and overly arrogant villain in the story which is nothing new and very common in every Chinese novel anyway, you will this novel good and I recommend it... <<less

The novel is interesting and I actually learned quite a bit from the random tidbits. What kind of annoyed me about the novel is that the author depicts every single opponent of MC's as racists. While I usually don't mind the depiction of racism in novels, I just find the depiction here over the top in this novel.
