This city has its secrets.

Whether it’s comfort or chaos, rain or shine, everything is dependent on a single person. People who live here don’t get sick, nor do they get hurt. Once they enter, however, they can never leave. Unless they pay with their life…

Tang Shan wakes up, only to find himself in an unfamiliar house.
A stranger tells him that he is his lover— Li Yuanyu. He says that Tang Shan has been in this city for quite some time. Tang Shan doesn’t believe it, because he’s obviously not gay, so how could he fall in love with a man? But there’s Li Yuanyu’s affectionate and attentive care, the artwork in the attic, the nostalgic warm smell of Borscht…

Memories of the past begin to resurface, proving that both of them were in love.
That is, until he discovers the message he left for himself before he lost his memories, telling him he has to escape, no matter what it takes…

What the hell?

I'm writing this review because I'm absolutely shocked by dday0425's review. I don't understand how they can blame the MC for all that has happened while praising the ML. This is literally victim blaming at its peak, because even though I don't particularly like the MC all that much, he's still better than this manipulative, abusive ML.

Did we even read the same story? (Rant below -- contains spoilers)

The MC has literally been KIDNAPPED. He's being forced to stay in this town he knows nothing about, and even... more>> though there is a reason he can not leave, no one bothers to tell him it until much later. So it's VERY understandable that he's not happy toward the person who is keeping him captive, which is the ML. Especially since he has memory loss and has reverted to the person he was before knowing the ML, who more or less "bent" him. How can you blame an amnesiac who has no idea where he is, who doesn't know the people around him, and who thinks he's straight for reacting negatively toward a man who is trying to keep him ignorant and insisting the two of them are in love?

The ML isn't some faultless saint. He's literally the reason for MC's suffering. By taking the MC into this town and assigning him the job of his "lover", he's forcing this relationship on the MC. Oh, and now may be a good time to bring up the fact that MC has a god damn fiance. Sure, he's dead so it doesn't matter, but let me emphasize again: MC. Doesn't. Know. Jackshit. No one bothers to tell him anything, so how can you blame him for not knowing?

MC might have made the first move on the ML, but are you forgetting that the ML is literally manipulating the MC into loving him? Forcing him to stay in the house and not letting him leave (which isn't the MC using ML for shelter, by the way, this is literally the definition of "the MC doesn't have a f*cking choice where he lives"), being the sole provider in a situation where the MC is helpless -- this is VERY manipulative. At this point the MC is also still very ignorant that his circumstances has been orchestrated by the ML himself, so it's natural that the moment he finds out, his feelings toward the ML change.

Because the ML literally does horrid things. He r*pes (let me repeat, rapes) the MC, physically beats him up, strangles him, slaps him, and wipes his memory over and over again when the MC understandably tries to leave. It even says in the text that ML starts to treat MC as a "s*x s*ave". Does that feel like love to you??? Huh??? Is this kindness???

I don't care if the ML is "crying pitifully" as he f*cking drowns the MC. He's garbage, how the hell do you feel bad for him?????

The side characters are shitty too. Marie is just s*upid -- she keeps saying "if you make the ML happy it won't rain anymore" and the MC is like "???" because again, he doesn't know anything. Any normal person would be confused as to how the emotions of a person could affect the weather, but Marie acts like the MC is the dumb one for not understanding. She also keeps trying to guilt the MC into loving the ML, which is literally victim blaming and so emotionally toxic. I literally wanted to rip my hair out in frustration.

Jake is a piece of garbage too. His characterization is all over the place. I don't know whether he hates the MC or is his friend, and his obsession/love (?) for the ML makes no sense. He acts like some hormonal, tsundere teenager but in a way that is so annoying that I genuinely wished he would die (or you know, go up in flames because he's already dead). He talks sh*t when the MC, who he knows has lost his memories and is being abused by the ML, tries to leave the ML, as if his actions are absurd. And then after he sees the MC has been r*ped, instead of feeling sorry for the MC or mad at the ML, his first thought is "omg how shameless did the ML r*pe the MC while I was unconscious on the floor? Couldn't they have done it somewhere else? These pe*verts lol".

The only reason I didn't rate this a 1.0/5.0 is because the translation quality was really good, and though the plot was all over the place, the mystery did make me curious enough to keep reading. Anyway, my final rating is a 1.5/5.0 stars. <<less

Wow. Ok.

So this is a bit longer than you'd expect. Every chapter is about as long as five average light novel chapters (not the ones so short you feel cheated). It took me approximately seven hours of reading to finish, but you might want a bit more time to process all the things that happen.

This story is dark, mysterious, and has a somewhat bittersweet end. The translation is on point, and the scenes are described really well. However, the characters are strange. They seem just shy of being fully fleshed... more>> out. They act like real people, but you don't get to see the motivations behind a lot of actions. Especially when it comes to the love interest of our MC.

Overall, it's a really good story if you enjoy darker stories. There's romance, a bit of 'meaning of life' stuff, some action, and loads of suspense.

Also, read the tags first.

I feels kinda strange reading this since the name Tang Shan is only one letter away from a certain xianxia protagonist. My imagination kept flying everywhere.

When I first read this I was expecting standard yaoi with amnesia. But shortly after reading chapter 2, I realized that this novel has more than that. There are less romance and more mystery. Who is the MC? Why does no one ever went outside the city? It really made me want to read more. I read this to get BL, but stay for the... more>> mystery. 4/5 as of chapter 4. <<less

Its so damn f*cking creepy as hell!!! It is a dark story and it really suited the tag, 'Psychological'.

It left me scared, happy, fear, curiosity... all in all it is mixed emotion.

It made sad that Jake was gone and I don't know who shall I pity, the ML or the MC.

Now I know why is it the title! Gosh when I connected it with the events it made me really scared to death!

So f*cking creepy and dark but its really worth reading. I will never ever read a story that contains Psychological and Supernatural. Those novels will surely kill me from heartache and heart attack.

I really like this novel... or at least I did until around chapter 7 or 8 ;-; The overall plot and mystery were executed quite well except for a few questions that were left unanswered. ... more>>
Spoiler

For example who is Li Yuanyu, is he a dead soul like the others or is he a Demon or a God? The only info it gives on him is that he owns the town and whatever his emotions are it will reflect the town. It makes me curious if he created the town and who exactly he is. Also what happened to Jake? I know it is implied that he was sent away/killed, but I'm really curious and want a definite answer.

[collapse]

Yet I can't allow myself to give this 5 stars due to the ending. In fact I was close to giving this 3 stars just because of the ending. However I can't ignore the fact that I really loved this novel right up till chapter 7, after that I feel as though it digressed. I read this novel under the impression that it may be dark and twisted, with a possessive Seme, which I tend to like if done right
Spoiler

AND with a happy ending! Yet instead of a happy ending it was very BITTER/sweet! If you don't like bitter sweet endings then take this as a warning! I wouldn't go so far as to say that the ending fit in the tragedy section but it was still too much for my fluff loving heart to handle.

[collapse]

Lastly, if you do choose to read this you should know that in my opinion it is more shounen ai. The most that happens in this novel is hugging and kissing, there are a few implied s*x scenes

Spoiler

and a r*pe scene near the end of the novel.

[collapse]

However, the author does not go into very much detail about the scenes. Therefore, in my opinion it is more suited as shounen ai. If you are looking for more detailed yaoi novel then I suggest you read one of those few titles.

First of all, this story is annoyingly great. It took me days to read to Chapter 9 since I can't read it without taking breaks in between, or I might be frustrated to death.

why is there anyone feeling pity towards the MC at all?
Spoiler

He's the one who initiated the relationship, yet unresponsibly wanted to ditch the ML even before he find out the town's secret. What a joke.

[collapse]
At first, I try to understand the MC as he's having an amnesia, but gosh! He's very very very very annoying. In the first half of the story, he always said he's scared of the ML, yet he still acted spoilt and did whatever he's pleased. 🙄 Seriously, he has an immature, self-centred personalities that I hate the most.

Seeing ML's devotion and how he always doted on a person with such personalities yet get stabbed in the back multiple times, I pity him. He's truly the victim in this relationship. His life would be a lot better if he's never met the MC. 🤦‍♀️ That's why the first 5 chapters are very uneasy for me to read.

The rest of the story is where the story gets better. I can't blame ML for being this possessive towards MC at all,
Spoiler

he's been used as a damn shelter since the first time they met. The MC even started their physical relationship first! The intimated one! What do you expect the ML to be after his lover keep telling him that he'd leave after all those times? A saint? After all this happened? With that much loves and dedication he's been pouring in? No way.

[collapse]

Spoiler

the most absurd thing is the fact that MC always cared about everyone else, and chose them over the ML, who literally took care and was very good to him for a whole freaking year. Really, what's wrong with him starting a fight over a housekeeper, who even once encouraged him to ditch his fiance for the ML? Is he an idiot? If you gonna feel guilty for your fiance afterward, why have s*x with him in the first place? This man is so damn ridiculous. If you are going to regret it, then don't do that in the first place. Besides, what's his rights to call other people mu*derers, when all they did is probably just in order to protect their own town? It's disgusting for someone who can't even be responsible for himself and fall asleep while driving to be judgy towards others.

[collapse]

Man! To think someone as loving and full of devotions like ML to turn out to be so distorted like this, he must've suffered so badly by the MC. Imagine being rejected repeatedly by your loved one. It's heartbreaking, the MC did break him so bad. I feel angry for the ML at this point. If I were with the MC for a day, I'd probably stabbed him to death or sew his unthoughtful mouth for good.

Nevertheless, atleast the ending is good, I now can be at ease and enjoy the read.
Spoiler

now he can finally be happy with his loved one, although I can still feel the pain and wariness the ML had held for the whole time untill the very end. 😢 I can't help but feel sympathetic toward him as he seems to be broken so bad that he's long lost his confidence and self-esteem. Now that he can finally be happy, I'm really glad for him.

As for the MC, you're dead anyway. Even after 100th times of reincarnation, you probably won't be able to find the lover being this good to you. It's your fortune so take it! Don't make things hard for ML anymore. If you're good to him, there's no way he will hurt you.

This is a great novel, wonderful translations, great writing from the author, but this ML is the first Yandere to ever make me suffer so much anxiety. Like holy shit, I've read a lot of crazy MLs, but this one takes the cake. The ending............

Spoiler

is a big disappointment. He should have reincarnated, had ML follow him and have a better love life in another life. I really dislike this ending.

I really do like this one. It's all so sad and hopeless, so futile, both of them going round and round in a circle, never getting anywhere. If Li Yuanyu had just told Tang Shan the truth, in any of those cycles of amnesia, he would had gotten a happier ending, instead of being afraid of Tang Shan leaving. I know it's bad what Li Yuanyu was doing but I can't help pitying him more than Tang Shan. So read this at your own risk. It is quite sad and disheartening.

The novel has a good premise. The secret hooked me. The mystery kept me reading. The suspense built up... I didn't feel that it followed through.

I like that the MC trusts his gut and doesn't automatically believe the people around him. His refreshingly determined personality made me root for him. But beyond the MC, the other characters felt kind of bland.

Spoiler

Even the ML wasn't too interesting. For a story that is surrounding the MC and ML's relationship, the relationship never develops to a point where I felt like there was a conflict between choosing to have a happy relationship and leaving. I was always too concerned for the MC and wondering when the MC would finally book it. If the relationship had been developed better or even if it felt like the MC was beginning to fall for the ML I think there would've been more impact.

It doesn't help the story doesn't really give you any closure. Sure you know how it ends, but there are more questions than answers

I rate it 4 stars simply because the story was intriguing enough to keep me reading it until midnight.

But the biggest problem was ML. The story revolves around MC and ML, yet we don´t get to know much about ML at all. How did he fall so madly in love with MC? Just what is he thinking? We never got his point of view.

Secondly, and this seriously bothered me at the start, WHY doesnt MC ask them why he suffers from amnesia???? Isn´t that the biggest question? Who cares who... more>> ML is or what your relationship is with him, shouldn´t you be wondering what condition you have that causes you to lose your memory so often?? This is an endless loop of mind f*ckery and plot twists. I uh, ended up thinking that a good chunk of the final chapters were flashbacks, but they're not.

In a way, the ending can be considered a "Happy End", but it's more like Stockholm Syndrome, but with magical memory wipey stuff. That's right, this has some magical bullshit.

Spoiler

Also I'm just really upset because of how Jake was treated. He was honestly the best character, and he deserved so much more.

This is an engaging horror story that I read in one sitting. It sent chills down my spine. It's nice and short, which makes it easy to get through it all quickly. The mystery, abuse, and supernatural horror were all interesting to follow. It was great to see the pitiful MC realize the reality around him. Unfortunately, the ending was a little unclear on some details. It would be nice if the flashbacks and epilogue were clarified and elaborated on... more>> a little more. <<less

An interesting story that does a great job of setting up suspense, but not so much in following through. Waking up in a strange place not knowing who he is and who he can trust, the MC starts to unravel his relationship with the ML and the secret behind the city.

Spoiler

Despite his amnesia, the MC instinctively senses the ML isn't a trustworthy source, and the gentle but dangerously possessive characteristics he displays hints that not only can things not be taken at face value, the MC may also be in a dangerous position himself.

However, the MC doesn't really seem that interested or attracted to the ML, and the story lacks that added emotional turmoil the MC could've had between wanting to find the truth or preserving a happy and stable relationship, or the hurt when he discovers the truth. Instead, the MC just wants out. While the reason the ML was so obsessed, and the anguish he felt over his own actions didn't echo as strongly either. Part of the reason for both is because the only time they had a happy and real relationship was the first time the MC arrived in the town, but their relationship is already too far past by the time the story starts.

The author should also take care when using supernatural elements to resolve a mystery. Since paranormal activities don't exist in reality, a different set of logic applies when they appear in stories. But when the truth that is uncovered is too far from our rationale based on what we know of the world, it dispels all the tension (which is why xianxia mysteries go to such pains to explain their world and the rules demons and practitioners are subject to). It was hinted at from the start, but the best mysteries are ones that appear supernatural but aren't.

[collapse]

It's good but would've been better if the story had been fleshed out and the characters' emotions had been more developed. <<less

This is not a horror story but it is horrifying. I can't decide which between the MC and ML are more pitiful because they both are.

Spoilers

Spoiler

Basically, the city is the underworld and everyone in the town is already dead. I'm not sure abt the ML tho because he's more of lyk King Yama.

So MC is already dead because of that car accident. He keeps losing his memories because he recalls the town's secret and that of the ML so he breaks down, fights against the ML. Him losing his memories is just him "dying" abd everytime he keeps losing more memories.

In the end, he can no longer remember who he is.

So yeah, it's horrifying but I guess the author wanted to end it in a sweet note because in the epilogue, MC no longer remembers who he is and became more accepting of his relationship with the ML.

[NO SPOILERS! Plus, don't read the tags nor too many comments if you want to avoid spoilers!]

City of Endless Rain? More like City of Endless Pain lol! It's angsty and has a bittersweet ending, so disclaimer! I was hoping for more of a mystery investigation, a treasure hunt of sort, but things just kinda unravel for the MC instead of an actual effort from his part, consequently the payoff isn't as great as it could have been, but it has nice writing, pacing and translation, along with a well crafted... more>> atmosphere, makes for an interesting and engaging story.

I just don't understand one thing...
Spoiler

Why wasn't the MC told about the reality of his situation? It literally would have prevented everything - he wouldn't have tried to leave, so he would have been free to love the ML all he wants and just move on from his past life, and he wouldn't have mistaken the ritual as mu*der. We weren't given any reason why he couldn't know, everybody else does, so why couldn't he? However, it's a slip I'm willing to overlook because it's easily corrigible and it doesn't take away from the story for me.

Initially I was very skeptical about this. The number of chapters were really little which is very uncommon for a chinese LN. Plus I don't often trust the "yandere male" tag in this site because usually the guys with that tag, aren't really yandere. Instead they're super mild.

Yet, after reading this novel in one go (literally didn't sleep last night because I was unable stop reading) , I am very satisfied and can't help think about it over & over.
Each chapter is well written. There's no useless... more>> paragraphs. Like what I usually read in CN novels, you read 50 skippable chapters, but the good part happens in ch. 150.... Seriousely? feels totally wrong.
Spoiler

As for the Yandere male lead, I think he's 100% true yandere. Unlike in the stories I read so far, he doesn't say "He's mine" every two second or throw empty threats like "I'll kill you/them, I'll lock you up, "...
This guy is one ACTIVE yandere. If he say he's gonna do it, he'll do RIGHT AWAY.

[collapse]

The story is so captivating. The mystery that dominated the first chapters is what really caught my attention. I keep making guesses and just like the protagonist I got so curious and suspicious about everything that surrounded him.
The later chapters are also well written, extremely intense. (I felt nervous while reading) But, still enjoyable. The conclusion was also good and questionable.

Althought the chapters were only 11, I think everything was okay and completed. So thumbs up, for how awesome this story is! ❤

Not saying I approve what ML has done and just like the others said the protagonist wasn't completely without fault. <<less

I felt the MC's complicated situation was explored thoroughly. The side characters did a good job of complementing the main characters without overpowering them.
