Matsuoka is hooked on wearing his ex-girlfriend’s clothes and going for nighttime walks into town, feeling the pleasure of being stared at by men wherever he goes. One night, after he is assaulted by a man during a one-off encounter, he is saved by Hirosue, a nondescript senior worker from his company. Drawn to Hirosue’s innocent and pure love, Matsuoka continues to meet with Hirosue, all the while dressed as a woman, until Hirosue finally confesses to him. Narise Konohara’s pinnacle of achievement portrays the pain and beauty of unrequited love and has also been adapted to a theatrical play.

Contains 2 short stories (published in earlier editions) “Of Tenderness” (Itoshii koto) and “Of Love” (Aisuru koto).

I have a lot of feelings about this novel and

A lot of people say that Hirosue suddenly going gay is unrealistic and that the gay realization isn't real. I'm a woman who didn't understand her sexuality until much later when I realized that I fell in love with a former friend. I used to believe homosexuality was a 'sin' of sort, much due to media presented those lgbt+ as strange characters. It wasn't until I truly learned to like a girl that I denied that I was liking her, until I realize it was just hurting me for denying those feelings. People may think it's really sudden but sometimes it really does hit you, especially when you're told certain aspects growing up, and especially in a country like Japan where homosexuality and the such is so vauge. I truly love this novel for being true to that kind of struggle because it felt more real, and it put a lot more weight on the important of those emotions too. I really wanted to say this since I see a lot of people are saying Hirosue isn't realistic enough, because there's people like him in real life and sometimes.. They can end up fall in love the same way he did. Human nature has always been fickle after all, including love.

This novel was an emotional roller coaster for me. I felt mild annoyance towards Hirosue while also being able to empathize with him to the point that I didn't hate him. At the same time, the pain and joy experienced by the main character felt so real to me. The relationship evolves slowly, and the tension is real - Matsuoka's struggles are relatable, and even his seemingly perfect persona is flawed with the lack of foresight and the poor choices he makes sometimes! Hirosue's flaws show up more when he... more>> is constantly berating himself, so he becomes easy to dislike but not to hate. Hirosue's self-consciousness and Matsuoka's persistence in the pursuit of love, are probably issues we all have experienced.

I actually read the whole thing in one afternoon because I just needed to reach that happy ending! <<less

This story ripped me to one extreme, to the other, then back to the first, then again and again. Amazing how the author could make "everyday" situations, conversations and conflicts into something so heartbreaking.

I like angst so this was GOOOD. Tbh it's a very cruel story, Hirosue character journey at end is so frustrating cause where was energy before. And I truly pity Matsuoka but ig love does makes one vulnerable but this is just too much... Though by the end Hirosue does reflect on his shortcomings but this man has done irreparable damage to Matsuoka's psyche.

Spoiler

Anyway, Matsuoka just straight up stealing Hirosue's watch is literally THE funniest thing.

I don't think there will be drama if Matsuoka had just think maturely after that forced s*x. ML apologized, he was wrong at that time, but Matsuoka was partly at fault too. It's just Hirosue was too drunk and did not know what he's doing. It was Matsuoka who actively invited him though.

I pity Hayama (Hirosue's gf after knowing Ms. Yoko is a man a.k.a Matsuoka) for falling in love with Hirosue. He is so insensitive to her. Don't make her your gf if you're not even gonna care for... more>> her. Smh. Don't worry. She found the right person for her and was happy.

Hays. I literally don't know why people from the review are saying the ML is a scum. No? Are you too blinded by MC's own drama? I understand MC. Why he's acting that way. But please don't be biased and say ML is a scum. I'm telling you, he is not.

In Volume 2, I see people commenting he acted like a scum. But please do understand him. He just lost a job and wanted to be alone. I know he is at fault for not telling Matsuoka about this. It is unfair to Matsuoka. If he just told Matsuoka about it then maybe Matsuoka could comfort him. The reason why he didn't tell Matsuoka about it is because he was afraid Matsuoka would think he is incompetent.

But I definitely agree Matsuoka deserves better.

You know, sense of companionship is a more higher and different form of love. But anyway, at the end, it wasn't one-sided at all.

It makes me sad how Matsuoka was cautious in this relationship. I wanna hug him. Don't worry, Hirosue's love for Matsuoka is genuine. Ah, my heart.

For those who are saying the love here is "forced", I don't think so. It just came naturally. No character here is being taken advantage of, okay? <<less

I usually stay away from modern urban romance, but I'm so glad I read this one... in one sitting (except for a few hour of sleep!). I just could not put it down! The story was just so real, things not going the way you want them to, like real life, the drama not over the top, but so there and so realistic in its progressions. This may sound bad for a review to say it like that, but I mean it in the best possible way.

This story is a beautiful rollercoaster of emotions, a delicate portrayal of the humain soul in its journey from unrequited love to happiness.

Highly recommend it. You'll cry a ton, but it'll be well worth it.

The story is good. Realistic. But why did I give it a four? It is because of Hirosue. I felt the emotions of the story. It was heart wrenching actually but I was annoyed with Hirosue. I know he is one of the fundamental elemet that made the story so good and painful but I hate how he Matsuoka. I sometimes want to spank him cause I want him to wake up but in all honesty his attitude made the story interesting. Though I gave four because of him but... more>> I can still consider giving five because of how the story went on because of him. The story is awesome. One of the novels that I read in a very fast but serious pace cause I don't want to be hang up with all the happenings.

Worth the read. AWESOME!! <<less
