The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love

Description

An internet troll who wanted attention, the reader criticized his favorite web novel, saying: “The protagonist is dumb and the author is s*upid.”

Author: “…Got it.”

Unfortunately for him, the author actually listened to his (troll) feedback. The formerly lighthearted tale of a cute harem master suddenly became super dark and edgy. The reader could only helplessly look on as the protagonist was abused and betrayed, finally embarking on the road to becoming completely evil. Everything was a mess!

After that the reader transmigrated into a strange world. How come the person in front of him looks like the protagonist (evil undead version)? Just what is going on?!

Note: Du Zhe (读者 meaning Reader) and Du Ze (杜泽 the character’s name) sound almost the same

don't read those R rated chapters!!! eee! they hurt, they HURT!!! Don't be tempted!!! trust me!!! The dragon region was a dead killer!! I gave up on it at first but I will continue to read... (sigh..) It was very painful to read!!! Pretty much entirely rapist... Those dam dragons!! I don't know if that was the hardest area or not, if I go any further, will the beast regions be worse?? I don't know if I want to chance it. Everything up to chapter 51 was pure bliss, then straight into 52 was like rubbing a cheese grater against my brain... not sure why the writer changed so much. I ended up feeling like the MC in this novel when he read through the novel at the beginning and the author kept torturing the readers. lol. The translator group name Bursting Chrysanthemums is not for nothing!!!

update: Just skip the dragon section if you don't want to be horribly broken..... (゚Д゚;)...... =͟͟͞͞ =͟͟͞͞ ヘ (´Д`) ノ ... the rest is good so far... o.o

I'm not gonna lie, TRPDHTL is good, if you ignore the not so tiny facts that bugged me.

It all starts when 'some silly cute moe person', diligently following a novel badly named, but holds close to his heart, posts a negative comment beneath the latest update. It is then that the author takes what he says to heart and so a series of torturous events turn the protagonist of the novel in to a vengeance thirst character. After the novel finishes he orders the book, only to find a doujinshi,... more>> and that he'd transmigrated with self-restoring abilities.

That aside, after he successfully gains the protagonists trust (and love) they journey across the continent. Du Ze's disability makes him diverse, as you wouldn't often see that, and proves to be more alluring to the protagonist.

It is quite enjoyable, and a 3 star isn't really low, out of 10 it'd be 6. There were many inconsistencies present, though and one racial insult. For example, of all the races, the only ones with dark skin were the elves. That was what was written in the early chapters, but later on, in the elf country arc, we were led to believe that the elves who had dark skin were dark, and the one with light are good. I can't help but feel that the author could have explored that in a different way. Moreover, the "light" elves turn "dark" and are mortified to find that their skin had turned black and killed themselves out of disgust. Well, the queen did. The message was clear: dark skin was something to be ashamed of. With the white/ black contrast established, I dismissed it as a fluke, that the author couldn't have known. Though I'd be lying if I said that it was alright. That may be the reason I'd dropped it, but I still read on to see the protagonist finally make his feelings known, and to see his other forms.

The translation was perfect, as well as reading the action, until the 20th chapter or so, we get to see the characters visually, what with the manga not translated.

Again, if recommend it for those patient with racial insults and a plot that somehow lags at times. <<less

On a site where the MC is almost always an OP cheat it was nice to see someone like Du Ze, who is not only weak, but also has to use hearing aids. For once though, his deafness isn't used it provoke pity in our minds, it's just a part of who he is.

I'm so glad the translators stuck with this story until the end. It was very good, and I'm very happy that while the MC could be a little silly at times, the author didn't go with the... more>> stereotypical s*upid and naive shou. I wan't forced to grind my teeth even once.

Also, thank you to the translators. <<less

One of the best that I've read. It's pretty satisfying although maybe I'm not really that satisfied with the ending. It's actually the best ending, don't get me wrong but well. The drama ends! Love the story so much I remembered having to read it on the day I'm not supposed to. The yaoi part is, as always, so good I'm drooling from thinking about it!!! XD

Spoiler

I am a fan of m-m, yaoi and bl novel but this book just not click for me.
there are many little things that made me annoyed.

MC language are a f*cking turn-off. Whenever I was about to be pulled in this magical world, I got a pull out by'The Moe lord', 'Some silly cute person' like Every Damn Paragraph. It's fine at first but repetitive using got me frustrating and it was annoying as hell. I tried to replace these silly pronoun by 'He', 'Du Ze' or even 'Xiu', the reading was way smoother.

The plot was rushed. The protagonist upgraded his power by awakening his bloodline. No training, No cultivating. Not buying it.

The plot armor was ridiculous.

The romance was badly written. MC was straight man who fell for the protagonist (man). I normally love this GFY trope if it is well written; it's my jam. But MC feeling toward protag remained in brotherhood zone until the protag confess to MC then Boom!, I'm gay for you baby. Not buying it. When the fuk did you develop your feeling? When you want to turn a straight man gay, it takes a lot more than just being abused (Lich experiment), guilty (for the fate of protag) and the look of the turner.

MC personality is a kill-joy. He's that kind of guy who is cluelessly s*upid, not recognize a love flag despite it being waved in front of his face. His mindset was also annoying too, It was full of irrelevant garbage I didn't care about and not one bit important to the story and the emotional development of the character.

The repetitive using of silly phrase and pronoun. As mention above, a couple of times, it was funny. A hundred of times, it got real silly. STOP IT.

THE r*pe SCENE. Me and r*pe DO NOT MIX. The one in this story has less damage because at least MC and protag have had s*x before but it is still considered r*pe still. Just reading it make me wanted to drop it right away. MC got double f*cked by two dick, no lube, no stretching, his hole was even bleeding. BIG NOPE. At least protag had taken the consequence seriously otherwise I would drop this.

The s*x scene was mediocre too. Maybe it's because of the author skill, but I got no vibe of love coming from the two. One was physically aroused, while the other only want to possess and conquer.

Read the title of this story. What do you think of? A love story, right? Despite the heart-pounding action and funny hijinks, The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love is essentially a love story. Take out the love story and you would be left with a heartless, soulless creation.

It's not true that the sign of a good BL story is that if you take out the BL, it's still good. If you want to take out the BL, then read a non-BL story. How about this:... more>> the sign of a good horror story is that if you take out the horror, it's still good. ≪--- Nuh uh! Take out the horror from a horror story and all you are left with is "they went camping, nothing happened" since the horror parts are absolutely essential to the story.

Moving on, this is one of the really satisfying BL stories around since it has the following rarely-seen elements, all in one story:

 • humor
 • no "dog blood" cliches like misunderstandings or scheming female villains, etc.
 • a yandere seme who nonetheless never abuses the uke
 • lovers who dote on each other
 • uke who is not coerced and falls in love of his own accord
 • likeable ML and MC
 • interesting minor characters
 • true love
 • completely translated
There are many, many BL and non-BL romance stories here where I can't stand either the ML or MC. The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love has a silly, cute reader and a truly moe protagonist.

The best part? I really think it's true love. This is a story where I can actually imagine the two of them growing old together and staying together forever.

TL;DR - This is the epic love story of two lovable characters. <<less

My first love. If you are into BL transmigration, this is a must read epic.

**Edited to 3.5 stars in 2023**

This novel is one of my first CN transmigration type, so I gave too generous stars. Could -1 star for characters flaw (ML's Yandere tendency/ MC's dumpness). And maybe -0.5 star for created ML's alternate race purely for writing NC scenes (IMO).

This ML is like a yandere but not so unreasonable. Yeah, he's possessive but he doesn't want the MC's body only. His path to conquering MC is to first slowly conquer his heart then indulge in some "bonding". Even when ML did harm the MC, he later vowed to destroy anything that would harm MC, including himself.

Overall, an a amazing story. The ending will surprise you guys greatly ;)

I'd add more, but everyone already said what needs to be said. This is definitely a must-read, you will regret not... more>> reading this, I swear! <<less

I very rarely write reviews, but this novel definitely warrants one. The humor is spot on, the characters have understandable motivations, and the emotions are poignant at the right times. Not to mention the translator is doing an amazing job.

For people who are a little confused about how the timelines work with the real world:

Spoiler

The reader is a fan of the author and will write bad reviews to get attention (essentially). He's pretty adorable when he does this. On the author's latest novel, he writes a review that causes the author to change the plot a lot as compared to his previous novels. The reader has to go somewhere for a while and comes back to find that the author has taken his story in a really dark direction. So the reader knows a lot of the plot and is QQ about it. Then he ends up in the protagonist's/novel's world, near the start of the novel and works hard to help the protagonist

[collapse]

Seriously though, the reader is hilarious and probably one of my favorite main characters yet! <<less

Simply one of the best that BL stories that I've read so far.

The story plot in and of itself is quite unique from the start. While other BL reader-transmigrates-into-mob-character-close-to-the-villain, this one is different in that it skips the reader (Du Ze) into the period where the original novel's protagonist has suffered the worst betrayal... one that he caused. From then on, knowing that he was the cause of the protagonist's suffering, he stuck by his side and devoted himself to the protagonist. In turn, because of this the protagonist became... more>> posessive of him and eventually fell for him.

Although the protagonist, like any other chinese novels, is overbearing and mostly unreasonable, he listens to what Du Ze has to say. He doesn't just discard his thoughts.

The development of the romance between the two flows quite smoothly, and in regards to the plot, I have no qualms over it.

Another good thing about this is the translation quality. The translator does a good, consistent job of updating chapters. The translation itself is really good, and there is nothing I can nitpick about it. The added pictures from the manhwa (manhua? I'm not quite sure which one is the right one...) of the novel is awesome too.

All in all, I give it a good five star rating ^^ <<less

This is a hilarious action/adventure/fantasy/romance story where an Awkward Lead meets an Extra-Awkward Lead. Du Ze, the reader, is a main character I haven't come across in many novels before.

Spoiler

He began losing his hearing as he grew up and hated wearing hearing aides, so he pretended to hear and understand his classmates. When he started wearing them, he realized they had been making fun of him all this time. This turns him into an expressionless and aloof character, who usually keeps his mouth shut. His eyesight is also poor, but he manages that well with glasses.

Considering all of that and the fact that he has no combat ability, he really undervalues himself.

[collapse]

The novel's protagonist, Xiu, was a standard Gary Sue bishie until his undead nature was discovered, and his happy adventure story twisted into one more focused on betrayal and revenge. Since then, he became paranoid and distrustful, choosing to become a cold-hearted warrior to be feared rather than to be loved.

They are both quiet characters who hardly talk and rarely share their secrets or feelings, so the awkwardness overload of two stiff stoic characters is pretty funny. As Du Ze's actions completely alter the storyline of the plot, it's fun to watch him get caught off-guard as events change. As Xiu becomes interested in Du Ze, Du Ze only focuses on trying to build Xiu's harem like the original Xiu had and is completely oblivious to Xiu's feelings. The addition of other characters makes their interactions more refreshing.

One of the biggest things keeping me hooked is...
Spoiler

the mystery of how Du Ze was sent to that world in the first place. It looks like the God of Light and the Gnome God of Forging are both looking for him. Was it their doing, or did the writer actually take part? What do they want with him? Why do some of the other characters feel intimidated by the weakling Du Ze? How does the prophecy Du Ze saw play out? Did he really receive that doujinshi by accident, or did someone send it to him on purpose?

[collapse]

The daily updates and comedy have me looking forward to each new chapter after work.

The main weaknesses of this story are its rough pacing and minimal chemistry between characters. The pace is fast enough to even out the awkward passages of time, but they are still noticeable. The side-characters make Du Ze and Xiu more interesting, but I'm more interested in the developing yandere aspects of Xiu rather than the anticipated romance. <<less

Feels like this one is over hyped. I got to chapter 14 only with willpower hoping the author changes up their writing style because the premise of ML having 8 different forms and a deaf MC sounded interesting.

But after a horribly placed 3 year time jump and constantly reading MC's chaotic thoughts and world building, I couldn't continue anymore. I still know nothing about MC/ML and they after 3 years don't know each other at all either because of "social anxiety."

I was hoping for more actual interactions between characters and... more>> the world, but you can be lucky if the MC/ML does absolutely anything once per chapter. The rest is all filled up with incohesive world building, MC's chaotic/borish thoughts and snippets from the actual "Mixed Blood" that don't really have anything to do with the actual story.

Also this one is a very subjective opinion but the pictures from the adaptation in-between was just bothersome. <<less

glad that this was one of the first danmeis I have read, to be honest.

when I reread it for the second time, I started to think that it wasn't really that, THAT good. It was good but also had a fair share of bad parts. But being one of my first reads and also the first novel I've read in this genre, it did impact me a lot.

Du Ze and Xiu's characters are not that written deeply. However, how they feel and what they wanted to express was clearly written,... more>> I love how the author wrote them. Du Ze also has a very special place in me since he is the first character I've seen with a disability. Xiu on the other hand is pretty much the typical ML we all see in danmei. He is obsessed, cold and possessive. Although, his background made it reasonable.

i love the fact that, while he was in his darkest time, Du Ze appeared.

the way he started from using Du Ze as his test subject, to slowly trusting him and finally loving him, I love it.

i do not want to sugarcoat the fact that he did bad things to Du Ze.
Spoiler

(the dragon part) however, I would also like to say that at that time, he was unable to control himself due to the influence of some kind of aphrodisiac (just, it was something that made him go into heat idk) that was forcefully given to him. After that, he never forced Du Ze to do anything else after that, he even swore to kill himself if he hurt Du Ze again.

[collapse]

i am not justifying his actions, I was just telling the whole thing that caused that part. In the end, it's up to the readers how to accept it.

as for the plot, I don't really think it was messy like how some reviewers say. I feel like it was written well and in order.

and of course, the characters. I love the side characters. This novel don't entirely focus on the relationship between the main characters but also their relationship with the side characters. Because of this, I am entirely satisfied with the ending. Du Ze got a proper closure with the friends he made in Xiu's world.

also, plus points for showing how Xiu interacted with Du Ze in Du Ze's world <<less

★★★★☆ [3.5/5 stars]

I wouldn't say that I loved this, but I can say that I enjoyed this novel. There are some frustrating moments such as when the MC was completely dense of the ML's feelings for him in almost the first half of the novel, or when the MC got kidnapped repeatedly, or when the author ALWAYS describes the MC as the 'silly, cute person', I was constantly rolling my eyes it almost rolled at the back of my head lol But it's definitely a subjective view because I've seen... more>> some comments from other readers and from there, I've noticed that it's not actually an issue for them. So, yeah. You just have to check this novel out yourselves and determine your own opinion.

If you like a yandere, OP ML who's deeply in love with his lover and an 'expressionless outside, chaotic inside' MC who's utterly dense but want nothing other than seeing the ML get out of his despairing fate, or some NSFW (explicit ppp) scenes of them while the ML is in his 8 different forms (lol) you will definitely love this. This might not be my favorite but I really enjoyed my time reading this for the most part. Still worth my time and I would also recommend it. <<less

This story is a masterpiece! I read it three times from beginning to end and loved it every single time. Sometimes when I read this type of BL, I wonder why the main character and may lead are together, but that never happened in the story. I can tell that those two are truly destined to be together.

The ending was really something, too. It made me think about the meaning of life and the nature of my existence. Not many novels here on novelupdates do that.

Pairing Type: protagonist ML x transmigrator mc; gong ml; shou mc; standard formula gong; op ml; shapeshifting ml?; deaf mc

Tropes: transmigration into a novel; beastkin; dnd classes; western fantasy

... more>> Triggers: violence; death; a consensual but painful s*x scene with gong out of his mind under the influence of drugs

Heat level: very high; several very explicit s*x scenes with kink (consensual)

Re-readability: medium; might reread

You know, I had this under my list of “couldn’t finish” novels for over a year. I didn’t plan on coming back to it after getting to around 15 or so chapters. On a whim, I decided to give it another chance.

And it’s a good book, for what it is. There are certain things I liked about it and certain things I didn’t but I could probably see myself reading it again in the future.

The characters are... mediocre. The MC has facial paralysis and for the most part is a fairly common shou type character. Cute, a little dumb. Thought it was cool that he is deaf, and the novel somewhat went into his own self-reflection on his disability and acceptance of his disability. Somewhat at least.

Standard gong but he’s not too bad. OP, possessive, drinks vinegar and s*x driven. Considering he’s a stallion novel protag it’s somewhat predictable. For the most part he’s pretty considerate of MCs wishes.

The cast is pretty diverse which is neat. Western style fantasy with a mix of different fantasy races and characters are a decent mix of men and women. That’s a plus for this novel, which can not be said for many others. A lot of BL novels are very male focused with almost no women, which is just... unrealistic?

Honestly, screw the plot, it’s okay. The villains are okay too. The s*x scenes are honestly the biggest plus lol. It’s deserving of the smut tag, a lot of nsfw with tons of kink and detail. It’s got something for for everyone lol

Spoilers:

Spoiler

One s*x scene I’d probably skip is the one with the dragon form when ML is drugged. The others are all fully consensual but that one was a little rough.

[collapse]

Honestly though, it was a pretty fun book. Didn’t take itself too seriously. I was turned off from it at the beginning because I didn’t like how the ML treated the MC but it’s addressed later. Would recommend. <<less

Loved this one. It's one of the few I followed along as it was being translated and it really helped that the translator posted 1 chapter per day. Very well defined plot and characterization, good pacing, and overall well-written. Very logical despite being a fantasy plot. The romance makes sense and is something worth rooting for. Most characters are relatable even if not all are likeable. Very well written and well translated.

This novel is really well written and such a roller coaster of emotions when I was reading it. Not going to lie I waited the longest time to read this because of the r*pe and yandere tag. But ML did many things as a compensation for that, soooo I liked it because I knew it wasn't his fault but it still is. The world building is pretty good and the side characters may be a bit 2D but they're pretty nice as an add on in the story. The villains... more>> here are pretty bland for my taste and did the job of making the ML go into a rampage and eliminating every character that get in his way, but the villains did stay in character for the bad characteristics of their race is born with, in which we can see this is the price their race has payed for their power and their downfall. MC and ML are in pretty bad shape in the beginning of the novel, like they are both abandoned and because of MC's longing to see or be with ML they got together.

Spoiler

The first chapters of the novel I was wondering how the will MC and ML will have a "healthy" and loving relationship, MC was very much a bystander at first but his feeling for ML is changing because of the constant change of events that is not similar to the original world of the novel.

At the beginning MC already has feelings for ML but not as a lover yet, and that's most of the reason why he becomes a bystander after ML is all better. Since in the beginning when he was still a reader he was pretty much an introvert and no friends, because of his past experiences of his disabilities that ends his social life and caused him to be closed off and find happiness in novels and the novel where ML is in. He then gave all of his time and attention to the novel and being a black powder fan to be noticed and finally being in the novel that he loved and be with ML. MC had many hurdles in life and he was really naive in other subjects which is one of the cute sides of MC even if he has a very cold resting b*tch face most of the time, except when he is with ML or doing "it" with ML 😆.

ML showed the progression of being a yandere since MC is taking care of him when he was at his weakest and being betrayed by everyone he loved, basically he was is bad shape mentally and physically. Because MC is the ML's last light of moving on and reason of living and not destroying the world he chose to not let go of MC even if MC betrays him and worse kill him. If I were ML I would pretty much do the same and would be a yandere to MC. But I do want ML to be gentle with MC when they are doing "it" cause that's going to hurt afterwards for MC later. This is pointless cause ML can heal MC every time they do "it" and MC likes doing "it" and wants to keep doing "it" with ML.

At the beginning of the relationship of the two I was a bit sceptic of it because it not well explored of how much they love each other, but because of the development of the two and the sweet and loving moments the two have made me approve they're relationship and continue reading the novel till the end. And I have to say the "hot" scenes are very much to my liking and my reasoning for reading the novel because of the smut tag 🤭.

I won't be spoiling to much of the plot and characters but the characters that was has much depth was Eric whom used to be like ML when he still believe being in the light, naive and ignorant of other worldly concept that are out of his reach. And in the middle of reading it I just want him to get his dragon and have HE with him and educate himself for all of the "advice" ML said to him.

[collapse]

The ending was pretty much a cherry on top and a bit unexpected for what I thought what the ending would be but I'm pretty satisfied with it's outcome.

So to anyone are reading this be ready to MC and ML's lovey dovey and ML being yandere and ready to lock MC with him for the rest of his life time.

P.S my stars should be 5 but cause I picked the wrong amount I picked 4, so my final vote is 5 instead of 4 stars. <<less
