Earth Online – a virtual MMORPG that takes place in the future year of 2190 – a game that everyone will bet their futures on. Set in a map that is ten times the size of real-world Earth, players battle for supremacy in the first game to feature personal adventure, territory construction, and grand warfare. For every death you experience in the game, your level would drop back to zero. Ouyang Shuo, an above average player, suffered the ultimate betrayal. For merely a piece of equipment, his sworn brother betrayed and backstabbed him. This time, after he reincarnated in the game, Ouyang Shuo swore to exact vengeance.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, Ouyang Shuo found himself back five years before the betrayal – right before the launch of Earth Online. This time, armed with the knowledge from his past life, Ouyang Shuo would venture upon a new path.

How to perfectly complete quests? What historical battle maps would appear? How should one build up their territory? Utilizing the experience from the predecessors of his last life, Ouyang Shuo makes his bid for the top against all odds. Follow his journey as he seeks to lord over the world!

A different kind of tale that blends historical characters and virtual reality gaming, with heavy emphasis on kingdom building and warfare.

This is a novel with an awesome backstory. The author manages to find a very compelling reason for everything that is happening and keeps introducing twists, mainly in the real world, to keep us engaged.

While there are arcs for events in the Virtual world, I'd consider them minor compared to what is happening in the real world and how it changes a lot of things. I will not dig deeper into this as it will be disservice to you if you decide to read the novel (It would spoil the... more>> only good thing of the novel).

I can still talk about the main plot as it has been spoiled by reviews and the summary. The MC is playing a VR game that was started by the gvt, 5 years in, he is killed in the game (no real death, dying in the game does not kill you, so this is not a re incarnation novel, but time travel) and somehow ends up sent 5 years in the past just before the VR game starts and he will use what he has learned to get a head start on others. He is doing all that as this VR game has very deep implication on people's future.

The MC will spend most of his time in the Virtual World, it is so real that it can be considered a second reality, you can smell, bleed, NPCs have AIs so advanced they think, strategize, are greedy, afraid, jealous, ambitious, they will fall in love and so on, there is absolutly no way to distinguish them from real people... Except we are told they are AIs. The MC has choosen the Lord class will get his territory and everything that comes with it.

This is a very interesting part of the novel as kingdom building is a HUGE part of the novel. Recruiting NPCs for an army, ways to make money, alliances, building defences and so on.

This is constantly the focus of the novel, much much more than Release that Witch for exemple.

However it is not as well implemented as RtW.

So let's start with the bad stuff, beware the list is long :

Spoiler

The author chose a much more... detailed approach to the kingdom building part. But the extra details are chosen poorly and are not about how things gets done.

You see, this is because of the author's choice when it comes to developping technology. In RtW you see the MC try different approach to build a canon for exemple, this is well detailed and interesting and you get to see the end results in a bloody fashion. This is great because the MC develops the technology (or recreates it) through trial and error. Effort is demanded, and rewarded.

Bu in this novel technology is mostly obtained... by buying it in the game shop with gold pieces or looting it randomly on NPCs body or from settlement destroyed... So you get the scroll, give it to the blacksmith and if he has the level he makes it... That's all. Which means that to add details to the World building, the author will have to focus on something else. And he does it through tedious staff changes in his adminsitration and detailling ridiculous gold expenditure.

Every few chapters you will see the MC creating new departements and appointing new departement heads, than

fusioning the departements, then separating them, then moving them under another departement with a new extra one just created, then deciding it should be so and do something else to move them around. This happens constantly and is mostly what we see of the kingdom building. Everyone has had 7 or 8 jobs so far. Going sometimes from maid to secretary to head of a local bank in a month. Seriously.

This has 2 bad effects.

    • First it is tedious and repetitive... After a while you just skip entire chapters because the MC has randomly decided to move around, for the Nth time, heads and dpts. You just end up skipping those parts that can last a full chapter.
    • And it means you have a hard time tracking who is who. They constantly move around and change jobs. So usually even if you can't remember the chinese name (and there are a LOT of characters and many have similar names in this novel), you can picture the guy "ah that's the finance minister dude". Here you can't. Because one day he is a Finance Minister dude, the next he is head of education, the next he will take care of the salt mine or whatever.

The MC is too lucky, he is suposed to be unlucky (according to the author and the MC himself) because of his very low luck stats, but even with the help of his past knowledge... He has too many lucky encounters outside of his knowledge on how things are suposed to go. Good things drop right and left and instead of a 5 in luck it feels like he has OVER 9000! "Oh you couldn't advance the town level because you need that particular profession? Try the roulette, you have one chance maybe you'll get him! Oh what a surprise out of the thousands and thousands of possibilities you got what you needed just when you need it !"

This always spoils the good moments of the novel because if you know he is that lucky there is no suspens.

Meaning it turns very fast in a juvenil wish fullfilling story. The MC is "awesome" (in the other characters' eyes). He does everything perfectly. Everyone admires him. He acts like a jerk, is selfish but people think it's normal and lick his boots.

I did say that the backstory is awesome. It is as it's fresh, different, and it kept me wondering "why are they doing this? Where will it leads to? What's the point?"

But the actions of the MC are frustrating. What he does is often s*upid or makes no sense but is still passed as a genius strategic move. A MC can only be as smart as the author after all. And this one, even though he tries hard... doesn't go far. After capturing bandits to use as s*aves in a mine you'll read phrases like this "To reduce their hostily to us put them in the harshest condition in the mine and give them less food and in 2 years we'll make them citizens".

Really? Good luck on that buddy.

The MC also uses money like nothing he constantly reminds us that in a couple of day he'll need a lot of money for something time sensitive that he can absolutly not miss and yet he literally use every last coin he has dozens of time before that event and somehow still manages to get unexpected wind falls that will make him, for the Nth time, the richest guy on the server.

You'll also obviously find all the arrogance and selfinesh that goes with a chinese MC, obviously the ultra nationalism of the author makes its way in the novel and MC.

Obviously the MC HAS to be a fighting MC, despite the fact that 99% of the content is kingdom building based and it would be s*upid for a Lord to fight, as if he dies his territory is lost and the MC would loose everything he worked for. But even then the MC will spend time cultivating and all the stuff that comes with it.

[collapse]

But there are still other good points:

Spoiler
    • There MIGHT not be a harem. Meaning there might be a decent romance. Even though the main romance went from strong independent girl to little kitten dependant on the big strong MC in a flash. But the MC has managed to keep it in his pants so far.
    • As said before the backstory manages to intrigue us.
    • Even if flawed, tedious, this is probably one of the novel where the kingdom building tag dominates the most, in the currently translated titles (I went through most of them).
    • Things progress at a good pace, if we ignore the pace at which the MC gets luck breaks and at which he progress, the main story has a good pace, not too slow nor too fast. Events develop without being rushed and you don't feel that the author is padding with useless stuff to delay things.

[collapse]

I'd rate it at 3 stars. It won't fill your need for a Kingdom building novel completly, but it is an okay snack. <<less

This is legit the only novel that ever deserves a Kingdom Building tag. Other novels only touch upon the subject while this story builds a complete system from nothing. If you like other story's kingdom building, then this may not be for you since it isn't s*upid.

When I first saw synopsis, genre and tags, I dont feel like reading it, but thanks to review from shuiko I got to know there is cute imouto here, so I add the 'cute imouto' tag..

Hmm, bout the story itself I think it was good? It mostly focus around the MC developing his territory.. There were some good interactions here and there, relationship between lord and his confidants..

Like others, it started out as something different but just turned boring and racist. More of a strategic mmo where it focuses on building a country basically. After reading Ark, Greatest Thief, Kings Avatar, I was looking for something kind of the same but different at the same time.

I don't even think the main character is more than 1 dimensional and his interactions with Song Jia are mostly cringe worthy, felt more like author wish fulfillment than anything else. The writing gets repetitive and long winded. Around when everyone is... more>> on the ship you can skip about 10 chapters and not miss anything. I don't know how this rated so high, guess its just not my cup of tea.

I also agree with the others, after a while the novel start feeling really racist. I'm all for being proud of your country but come on. This is becoming more of a time waste then I'm willing to put in. <<less

I'm tired of this. Every time the main character has an amazing lead, resource, numerical advantage, Di Chen MAGICALLY has something better but the guy doesn't have a better foundation in land size, quality NPC's, Items and tech. The pathetic author literally can't do anything but a Tom and Jerry with these two over and over again.

This is the best kingdom builder that I've read so far and is one of the best in the genre you have military tactics, you have economics, and you have diplomacy, now it isn't soo complicated as to be almost a text book but gives enough of it that you'll enjoy it immensely if you're a fan of such books. Overall 5/5

Honestly this novel is great for those who love Kingdom building, lots of political maneuver, organization building, city management, etc. Yeah, it's not your typical Xianxia where the Hero charge on the front line, thus I can understand people who said it's boring.

All that but still the author didn't really know his/her stuff. I mean okay, author knows China, but other countries? heh, well... yeah, no... It's hard work to know China's history alone, and I can understand world history will take tolls on the author. But it kinda make... more>> the whole story skewed.

Also the author love to debuff the MC and buff the antagonists for whatever reason there is despite the fact that GAIA (the AI) is "Absolutely Fair"

Still, 4 star? yeah, for those who love kingdom building, otherwise more like 3, 5 stars for those who don't <<less

The itself is very entertaining, delving into some of the MMO/Guild aspects that are usually ignored in other novels, such as establishing a government. The entire kingdom building aspect is very well done.

Definitely a must read for any kingdom building fans.

Right from the start the MC carefully plans out his every action. The way he develops and expands his territory is excellent and (in my opinion) consistent with how warlords from the Warring States Era would act.

The only thing I dislike is so far is that the MC hasn't experienced any setback yet, and that it's easy to lose track of the characters. A cheat sheet for the names would be great.

... more>> All in all, I rate this story 4.5

Updated review:

Still a must read for kingdom building fans, but only up to a certain point. The author downplays the capabilities and historical figures of other countries which I somewhat expected, but I can't help but be disappointed at the missed opportunity for the MC to actually be challenged, and for there to be a real rival despite his OPness. Kingdom building gold right up to before

I want to give the novel 5 stars but the ending really let me down (of course, the novel delivers the story about the world online to us because in the end all people live in the online world after the disaster struck Earth planet, but still.. Sigh.. I'm truly disappointed). Why

because the author decided to stop the story just after the MC is gonna start his journey in Hope planet so we wont know about his adventures and the benefits for all his hard works with his cultivation and training to become very strong, how he will develop his territory in Hope planet for humanity. The ending is very very disappointing. So my suggestion for you is to only enjoy the story about the MC fights to become world's emperor in the game and just forget anything about Hope planet. F*ck!

4/5 Solid Novel

Would've been a 5 but it's annoying how literally every single girl in the story is fodder for the writers little sister fetish. Seriously, every single chapter of this entire novel has the word sister written in it at least three times.

I wont keep this long, first of all it really is all about "Kingdom Building", Novel has a lot of potential but terrible f*cking written it's so bad I just want to stab the author. Why? MC is literally like a dog towards every single women he interacts and meets he will literally give them anything they want because you know author seems to be a feminist, author must be a single dude whos never touched a woman in his life as well. Worst of all he has already been... more>> "BETRAYED" in his previous life and he is still giving his "RANDOM ALLIES HE NEVER EVEN INTERACTED WITH BEFORE IN HIS LIFE" all the goodies and freebies for what? Bullshit. It's like taking care of an injured winged tiger ready to pounce on you once they've gotten everything they want from you. (Well this is how it should go normally ofc "COMMON SENSE" well our author is quite ret*rded I should say) anyway if you want a ret*rded novel here you go, has so much potential it's really good but holy sh*t it is written by a sweaty nerd ass kid whos never touched a fcking woman in his life so terrible. Excellent +. [Chi. Names] A competitive WORLD VR platform (includes most international recognized countries and also well known location myths such as 'Atlantis'). This novel have an extremely detailed Kingdom Building from Village to Empire, World building, VR system and the most notable of all is its Political and Military Reforms (you can see a qualitative transformations with each upgrade). The World itself is well thought that there is not almost obviously seen plot holes. Its one of the best novel I have read

The world building is firm, solid enough to imagine in your brain, coz you just need some global map for it. Even though tags and genre are second chance and rebirth, Of all novel I have seen, there are a lot of vengeance and hate for antagonist (i actually hate it). But this novel is different, almost there is no vengeance for past life, just try to survive in game and take advantage for his rebirth.

If u ask me about how romance... more>> in this novel. Romance in this novel is enough, not overflowing plot or something focus in this novel, protagonist is monogamist person. Very few conflict in romance, but its enough for story.

What I like most are world building, adventure in past/history of china, and how to manage your dominion, people, economic, and army. In my case, I have to look china maps/fandom map, in case story develop in broader world, meet oversea person, you need global map, I must look global map, my sense in map is suck.

Character introduction and development are good enough. But I dont think protagonist has a lot of real friends, maybe some families, neighbors, old friends and his alliances. Almost majority of people who help him build of his dominion or territory is AI from history of China, but not all of them.

For plot and story are not repeatable, maybe for some people feel like that, but for me its doesnt. You must filter between major plot and minor plot. Its not repeatable for me, maybe the is greater view is same, but its not. In every sometime, the game is updating the pacth, in early years is very different in late game, its make game more and more like real life, army fighting, politics, socials etc. Its make plot more and more interesting y know.

That for pros for ya.

My cons for this novel is supremacy of china, a lot of novel with tag/genre modern world always with china supremacy. Its pretty normal for u, u must accept it, this novel is for chineses people not for foreigners like us.

Conclusion. Just read it if u like rebirth and kingdom building genres. Its good

and sorry for bad english. English its not main language in my country <<less

TL;DR - a TON of severe racism shows up right when you think you like this novel.

At first, it's a nice read. MC creates a kingdom from scratch, recruits historical Chinese generals and bureaucrats.

You can't help but wish he has different people for rivals, cuz the ones he has are rich young masters given a head start in the game cuz their families are rich. They are given command of territories and squabble with each other while getting nowhere against the MC. Author has a favorite among them but all... more>> of it incredibly painful to read.

Otherwise, it's a nice read. The MC's kingdom expands repeatedly, conquering and assimilating various territories.

It gets a tiny bit annoying when he restructures the entire bureaucracy of his entire kingdom for the MILLIONTH time and shuffles almost all key positions. And it's kinda important to know who is doing what so as to keep up with events later, so the author really messed up with his antics.

That is not even a con compared to what happens when MC ventures beyond Chinese territory. Be prepared for enough racist crap to last you a thousand Chinese novels. Seriously. It's bad. Worse than IRAS. Much worse.

At first it's the regular victims: Vietnam, the Philippines, Mayalsia, etc. The neighbors. As usual, they are portrayed as fundamentally barbaric, unintelligent, petty and immoral. There is no good in them while China is awesome. Anything is justified, even genocide. Then MC simply sails all the way to Europe and boy does it get bad. Chapter 665 is around the part where Spain, of all countries, gets tr*shed by the author. When was the last time you saw Spain featured in a Chinese novel? LOL. And I can guarantee you author will get around to tr*shing every country he knows of. The objective is world domination, after all. <<less

At chapter 158, I'm starting to lose interest. It was pretty fun for awhile, watching the MC grow his township. Unfortunately, to enjoy it you have to think of the game the MC is playing a bit more like Rimworld instead of the realism that the novel tries to depict. NPCs have rather shallow motives and once they become loyal to the MC, he pretty much hardly has to worry about them again.

The reason I'm losing interest is actually because it's just getting to be too easy for the MC.... more>> He hardly has any real rivals. It's kind of cool to watch him build alliances and get bigger and better, but I can now pretty much predict the outcome of other people's battles by whether or not they'll affect the MC, so it's started to get boring. At the point in which I'm at, I rate it a 4 (as thanks for my enjoyment these last few days), and if I continue on I'll drop it to a 3. <<less

Really nice novel to read if you like Kingdom Building... but (chapters 1~200) :

  • Military is sure an important aspect of the novel but the protagonist has around 10-20% of the population alocated on the Military, this number seems a bit off... If you have a pop of 1.000 and 20% of the pop on the Military it will be 200 (males), but the total of males is 500 (50% of the pop?), so only 300 males for other activities, but there are 200 people on loggin, 100 people cutting stone, 50 people on the mine, 200 people farming, 200~ people on contruction + some people on the workshop and bureucracy jobs... So... the sum dont add up... Are the females mining, cutting logs and stones? And the children and eldery that cant work... ? This seems to happen many times in the novel...
  • The pop is 2.000~3.000k, and he sudenly alocates 500 people to an area (mining) that had 50, and few days later he alocates another 1.000k to another area (wine-making) that had none... And the other areas? I dont think the author is good at math... Also happens a lot in the novel...
  • He introduces almost 1 character (new name) every chapter! Things get complicated in the beginning to remember who is who.
After chapter 200~ the author is more attentive to the numbers of the citizens and alocations... After this in my opinion the novel gets much better (detailed) :

  • He explain why some things are different from reality and give reasons for the new added reality.
  • He introduces the history of battles and the characters (where they come from).
  • He explains the micromanagement and the decisions of the characters.
  • Every character has its own personality. No standard personas.
  • Again, the Kingdom Building gets better and better.
