Don't really hate it, but don't really like it all that much at the same time.

It's your classic tale of a dirt broke gamer who decided to live a stressful life by playing games in order to make a living (thus taking out 99% of the fun/relaxation of playing video games). The MC is constantly regretful and b*tching about how he keeps losing out on money, to the point you won't even be able to recall the MC's main goal for like 99% of the story; which, is to apparently... more>> take revenge on 30 rediculously bigass guilds funded from some rich ass mother f*ckers, all by his lonesome and poorass self.

At this point in the story, his reasoning and urge for revenge is kind of childish/redundant, when compared to what he could earn, monetarily, by joining of the big 30; I mean, I really don't see why he keeps making it hard on himself, just to earn chump change (and then complain about it), when he could be making big buck with the Storm Hunters (whatever happened in the past is in the past, move your ass on, cause they ain't done jack sh*t to you in your current reality).

  • Apparently his "friend''/vice-guild-master (that's what I assume that person was, I really don't remember at this point) went behind the MC's back and sold out their guild to one of the 30 big guilds in the game and left the MC hanging. The MC didn't want to sell out and fights back; he ends up getting pked into oblivion. Goes out to buy some sh*t at the store and gets run over by a car, and somehow sent back to before he start playing the game.

There's something different about Emperor of Solo Play that makes it quite exciting. The story has so many tropes common you can find in many a similar novel: a reincarnation premise, a VRMMO setting, poor player living in a hard society, the necromancer, game filming and video reactions, the solo player - but the author puts them together pretty well to create his OP strength necromancer.

Not only that, but he has a fast paced writing style that rarely gets distracted from his plot.

There are a lot of OP characters in... more>> this genre, but this one has some thought put into it. Can't say that the full strength necromancer is realistic, but it's just believable enough and carried out well enough that it's an amusing read and I applaud the author for his daring concept. Just to put this in context, I've read tons of novels where the MC is OP because they picked an 'unpopular' class... I find those premises so s*upid because, no, archers or priests or thieves, etc, etc are never going to be unpopular in a fantasy genre. Maybe the vast majority of players just follow the herd, but top level players do research, they find the math and determine which ways to min/max their characters - you'll never become an OP/better than everyone else player by picking a class. But using an AI differently? Choosing a completely abnormal stat with a class? These are interesting concepts to do a novel in this genre.

If you just want a necromancer or black magician story, go read awaken online, seoul station's necromancer, king of the battlefield, warlock of the magus world, don't fear the reaper - there are tons.

Most importantly though, this story is well written. Like Tidal Moon and God of Music, much of the excitement is driven by third party views of comments on videos and other players reactions to the MC, which is a technique I quite enjoy. The world building is also pretty decent, giving a solid VRMMO world and immersing the reader in some nice dungeons and quests. <<less

This novel is broken!

The world it is set in is broken... even the game world was shitty compared to other games (RPG novels).

Spoiler

What the heck is with titles providing with large amount of stats points

and the new players not able to advance to the top? Who would want to play this game after losing the opportunity join in the beginning f they can't even become overpowered? Though the MC becomes overpowered is his previous timeline which should be impossible considering that he was a nobody and only knew how to fight, his stats should be horrible considering the titles he lost to the rankers.

[collapse]

The most annoying this about this novel for me was game world... it was totally immersion breaking having a sifi watch with slot on function though not a marksman class. P.S. the killed monster taste good when they are melting? What the f*ck is with that, the MC hogs down melting bodies of monsters as he couldn't eat it in the real world.

And who would want to watch the videos of this game? it got a shitty plotline and world building with even worse characters, this story is about money money and money.

Spoiler

The strongest players are those that have lots of money.. like that psycho yandere girl who will surely become the love interest of the MC though he hate her to his bone, but who cares she is beautiful and want to "obtain" MC.

[collapse]

Aside from the broken game that is **** (I don't know the name), THe whole world is goddamn boring (I actually skimmed through all the useless fights and even some plots points, its not like anything matters) there is virtually no character interactions with the MC, he would occasionally befriend some people, but will give up on them after some time, everyone want a piece of MC.
Spoiler

And the Top30 guilds are also s*upid as hell, as some of them try to harm MC knowing that there is a possibility of him belonging to a large guild, and even if not he could join there rival guild.

Some people definitely won't like this novel because of a lack of character and plot development. The author focuses more on how the MC plays the game rather than plot/characters. The MC's serious skills in the game (as shown by his various solo exploits) and the direction of his totally different character build are fun to read about. That being said, plot/character development isn't too bad. I can usually follow along with why the characters do what they do and what happens in the plot, despite the periodic cases of... more>> 'Why you spend so much money MC!?'. The MC is a loner now, so he is basically the only main but I wish that there was some more at least somewhat important characters so we can better see the MC develop. Close to a 4. <<less

Betrayed player stubbornly sticks solo in a creative world. No plot armors as of yet as he just pushes on with his class. Very reminiscent of LMS without all the teasing relationships of the MC with other because you know he won't get along with anyone. Positives is that it never sticks to one place and moves along very quickly as you can see his literal progress to becoming the top with other players. Negatives is some of the mechanics are clunky as some spells deals in percentage which is... more>> massively op and hasn't explained other class mechanics aside from MC's own.

All in all I love it as I try to see how he goes on without being an arrogant self-righteous ass as he does what he wants for profit and always moving forward with clear goals in mind. Can be kinda lonely as we don't have any side characters aside from the occasionally side character viewpoints which really helps the story out in seeing the perspective of the MC accomplishments. <<less

Though this novel is entertaining to read, the author does a poor job of explaining the causes and reasons for events. Why does Hyrkan time travel back to his younger self? Why does VR cost thousands to play within 20 years?

In addition, the game is a terrible premise for gamers. It costs more than $700 a month to play it. Now, an argument could be made that it was only made for rich players, but that defeats the purpose of a big player-base. This game has over 10 million people... more>> playing it. Would you pay $700 a month to play a game when another game is much cheaper and has similar content? The novel does play up the main character into someone who has a good reason for playing solo, but it's hard to understand how all the other characters don't have a brain.

Why did the main character have to be betrayed? What were everyone else doing when this happened? The author may elaborate, but with this track-record of brushing aside reasons for events, I doubt it'll ever come up later in the story.

My final rating for this novel is 3/5. Enjoyable for reading, but turn the brain off when you read it. <<less

I don't understand why the protagonist got scared of being PK'd when he can just report those people for malicious gaming, it was even mentioned he was good at PvP, there's dozens of way to overturn his situation and even broadcast himself being continuously flogged. On the first chapters, saying he was betrayed, lost everything and wouldn't be able to earn anything, while he was potrayed as overwhelming and made his team earn recognition, I would have believed it if the bit*h antagonist owns the game which will make it... more>> impossible for him to play, but it was implied that the game was globally on top, which made the his problem not being able to get help from anyone bullshut, author must be on crack or something. He can even smudge the reputation of the bit*h antagonist easily and include her henchmen. Few plot holes already appear on the first chapters, the author probably think plot holes means foreshadowing, when usually it should be where the hook is, instead of compelling me to read, it instead made me wonder how and why that was chosen as a first chapter and now you gotta read the next chapters as exposition to why it happened in brief passing, who the hell would wanna read a scene in reverse. That scene could have been portrayed diffently and would have ended the same, but the author just made out a petty grudge as a reason with no build up whatsoever. Quite telling how intellectually challenged the author is. Those who rate this high are certifiably autistic. <<less

This novel is very similar to the authors other work kill the hero. One Takes place in a game the other in reality but other than that they are very much the same so I would recommend reading kill the hero first and then this one if you want something similar.

Other than the levelling and fighting there isnt much I liked about this novel to be honest. There is no romance and The only Real life aspect was the Video Production and money problems. MC does everything alone so other... more>> people arent that important.

What I disliked is the stat System. Setting aside the Fact that it makes Zero sense to develop a game like that the stats system is very weird. It feels like 90% of the stats come from achievements which is great for MC but just doesnt feel right when reading. MC keeps trying to level up to get a few stat points when one lucky encounter can get him multiple times that.

The ending is just awful and frustrating.
Spoiler

MC has to stop playing before reincarnating because he doesnt want to join another guild and gets killed over and over. So what happens at the end of the novel? He joins the guild of the person who made his life miserable and is still poor even though he made millions and has a contract with a big guild???

[collapse]

The whole Making money though Videos makes no sense and isnt interesting at all. Why would millions of people watch his Videos when only a few thousands play the game? Those people have no Clue what the game is about how can they stay interested? Also how can MC constantly Lack money I know its supposed to be funny but its just s*upid. He has barely enough to get something to eat even though he makes tens of thousands per Video. <<less

It’s a pretty light-hearted novel that follows a clever, hardworking protagonist who was betrayed in the past and works towards his goals in the now. If you don’t like characters that are op, you might not like him. But I enjoyed the humor and combination of the fantasy game setting and clever schemes of the lead to create just a fun and interesting story. It’s a relatively short story (compared to the ones that are over 1000 chapters, lol), so take it as what it is: a short, fun story... more>> about a guys who is just doing what he’s best at. <<less

This is the type of novel that you like because of the MC and nothing else. The novel stays true to the part of its title 'Solo Play' in the sense that there are almost no supporting characters. Some appear from time to time and make you think that they're going to join, but they part ways, with almost no mention to the in later chapters, which is unfortunate because they seem interesting.

So, the main draw of this series is the MC and his skelly boys. You sometimes can't help... more>> but admire the guy's tenacity. He pulls through despite the grueling suffering he goes through and no matter how terrible his living conditions or body state is in. He also has an 'an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth' personality, which makes him all the more interesting. However, you also cannot help but question his lifestyle, because it clearly isn't healthy spending millions on a single game, and neither is it sleeping 3 hours a day. Not to mention he has zero social life, he has no one else to talk to or confide in and it feels very lonely at times while reading the novel.

Unlike Overgeared, the NPCs in this have very little interaction, they aren't lifelike, nor was any special attention paid towards them. The novel does very little in the way of world building; at most, it introduces some tourist spots in the world of Warlord and that's that. It doesn't make me feel immersed, so despite the premise of the strongest necromancer, it failed to live up to my expectations

Overall, I wouldn't give this too high of a rating, <<less

I guess: Traffic accident + NEET otaku != Isekai (in this case at least). Instead it's the regret filled, "Second Chance" plotline, that I've read before in other Korean WNs. The full-dive MMORG world here is horribly underdeveloped, yet the game mechanics are rather interesting, with the skill trees reminding me of Path of Exile. There's a heavy emphasis on online media & money making, which can be both fun yet annoying to read through, when the MC barely uses the money IRL. Instead the reader gets to witness the... more>> most Pay to Win class imaginable, with his overpowered Necro build. Honestly this whole thing felt like the author himself was f*cked over in 1 too many MMOs and was simply venting his frustration. Surprisingly solid ending though <<less

quite an alright MC imo, the rest characters are pretty realistic as well. Everyone follows own ideals, clashes interests etc. and it overall results into "who's stronger to push other aside". MC notices that there's ways to have more fun in game, but still follows his dream to become the best and the first to finish the game (finish = ending of the main storylines), - to be an "alpha", so-to-say.

The game itself is ridiculously overhyped, considering all those necessary donations, payments, while being so plain overall. So much limitations,... more>> no flying, no ships... no mounts (only rare skills grant something similar and even then can't exploit it as one would've liked). Even no PvP-specific grounds other than world-PvP which is really surprising, no sieges, guild system is just basic coordination under one hierarchy and name. No chests, exploration is only for the quests and levels+mobs+bosses + some instances. No interesting items pretty much, crafting isn't profession-specific, though it's somewhat good. It just feels too plain. At least there's that melee necromancer build and some humor.

By the end MC gets rid of his so-to-say pride, realises that he can't become an alpha without others' help and to get his dream accomplished...
Spoiler

concedes to the one he hated the most.

[collapse]
Ofc that's somewhat understandable as even if one actually is able to solo something, one still has to be considerate of others, as they have enough power to mess up everything. MMO that is.

The ending isn't 100% great for MC, might even wonder if all of that was really worth it.
Spoiler

He had spent SO much cash on the game and his char, which he abandoned right after, that all the unpayed taxes seem to have left him with barely anything other than some luxury items and the contract leash.

Ending was rushed af. Main ending battle glossed over in 2 sentences and a rushed explanation that the game was ending because the main scenario quests had all been cleared. Which is ridiculous considering the time and effort and money some people have invested into the game, and that it had only been running for like 2 years? Lame. MC was annoying. Always screaming about how he had no money and how the game was unfair and why couldn't he have gotten this item or whatever. And apparenltly the human... more>> body can survive of just coffee and glucose as the main meal 100% of the time. I'm surprised he hasn't been hospitalised for hyperglycaemia or organ failure. Compare to other VRMMORPG novel, this game world was likely to be in the pioneering era. That means the world was not fully immersive. NPC's AI was still have flaws and acted robotically. The system was not fully develop. The game structure was very unbalance. The class system s**ked. Etc etc.
The world-building aside, the main character was not like able. He was a game addicted who chose to buy in-game items for 100 USD instead of a good meal for his health for under 10 buck.

Side characters was... more>> not one dimensional mobs like you can encounter in xianxia novels but also not fully developed either.

Translation quality was pretty bad; a lot of glaring errors even in the eyes of non-native English speaker like me.

Despite all its flaws, I still find myself enjoyed this novel a lot more that I should. I liked that Author did not try to make an OP MC that can fight an army by himself. I liked that MC used his head in fighting and scheming against his enemies instead of purely follow his sense of justice and his instinct to revenge. I like that he think of the consequences. I also like the ending. The ending was very rush though, I just liked the direction and the result of everything.

All in all, I recommend to just tried it. It was fully translated and free. So why not? <<less

I won't go into much details here.

What I wanted to say is - I enjoyed this novel to extent of reducing my sleep hours while reading it. It has distinct personality and idea behind what happens to both MC and the "World". This is a decent read. The politics and his slow but steady growth is quite nice to read, but he definitely isn't a people-person. I definitely would have given this a 5/5, but there was no real conclusion. The final battle was skipped, and we are only given hints as to what happened rather than the actual explanation. It was definitely a rushed ending, if you can even call it an ending, but it is still a really good read if you take the time to read all of it.

I think that the novel is a really nice read.

Just imagining myself going through what the MC did.... really brings me heartache!!

It's also nice how realistic this is with all the politic going on and profits etc., especially when the MC calculated the amount of money he spends on in-game items and how he had to cut down on his food..... oh the food.... coffee with gr*pe candy... ugh poor MC.

It's also funny that the main girl (I think she can be called main girl since she's practically the only... more>> character that's sort of a female lead) is such a yandere~~ It's simply amusing how she's all "If I can't have him, no one can." ^^ But I think if there is such a person in rl, I'll be frightened.. but flattered...... but mostly frightened.

Anyway~ try giving it a read! <<less

I really enjoyed the elements in this story. As one would expect from practically any story, the MC has a decently strong plot armor, but with actual reasoning behind it so not much of a point of complain. However, the ending. I'm dissatisfied with it. Reason? It felt rush. In fact, its basically a case of "You need to end this story and warp it up in about 5 chapters" hence the author proceed to make it that way. It doesn't deserve any score higher than 3 stars.

The background of the game doesn't make sense. The protagonist is an a**hole, so unlikeable and unrelatable.

This is like a mix of the bad korean and chinese tropes. A typical korean moneygrubber MC who spends all his earnings back to the game, even the stuffs he bought in reality were for the game. It also copied the s*upidly rich s*upid villains from chinese novels, and a loser MC.

Even though he earns a lot, the author will always find a way to make... more>> him poor or look poor. At least in some other novels, the MC knows how to have a life, but the MC in this novel really have a loser mentality, good with the game but still a loser and author will always find a way to push him to the loser-route. Those scenarios might be funny at the start but it gets tiring and dull to the point of being annoying.

Worse part is the ending was rushed and the final battle was even skipped.
Spoiler

and he's still a loser.
