I really love this novel! The MC is really likeable. She is gentle and smart, she just focuses on avoiding disasters in her second life, instead of spending her time getting revenge.

At the beginning the ML seems like a heartless idiot, but it turns out he is quite decent. He was just clueless about other's manipulations in the past. Thankfully he realizes the truth and changed into a great guy.

Good read. Slow paced and more realistic (?) than many I’ve read. She’s sensible and looking out for herself, staying true to character, rather than seeking revenge. I like to watch romance grow rather than have it strike like lightning. I enjoy watching characters gain positive traits rather than remain stagnant.

I enjoyed it. It's not like the main character is OP or knows everything. The knowledge she gained from her first life is very lacking and hence makes it seem much more realistic. There's also no revenge plot. I found the main character very likeable, she feels like a real person rather than a 2 D character. Her husband doesn't seem like a bad person yet, but just way too spoiled by his environment so he seems very self centred but he is trying his best to help make her... more>> life more comfortable, so I am not disliking him for now. Oh the cousin is an evil witch lol ? Hate those sort of complicated people with hidden schemes, I really wish she would trip on her own schemes sigh hope our heroine can survive her evil plots. And yes the other side characters are also enjoyable as they seem realistic. Hopefully the quality of the novel or translation wouldn't suddenly drop. Thanks for the hard work of the translator team. <<less

Good so far, but doesn't have much flavor as of now.

UPDATE:

The main guys is just not my taste.... he seems pretty weak and doesn't have much of a ML's aura like other novels. But for some reason I really like how the ML of this novel feels, cause it gives a more realistic feel.

It has a slow release on top with slow pace, so when I read the latest release I just like who is this person again? I think it's better to hide the series from your main reading list for meantime.

MC is a bland character is her past life, after being abandoned, accused, she still think her husband is pretty, and I do feel she still have feeling for the hubby. The story goes like she is suggesting to the hubby to have fake marriage for 1 year before divorcing her,... more>> and to keep the appearance she asked her hubby to marry his childhood sweetheart after they were divorced. And I was like really? For keep face? Isn't getting divorce as a woman is like dragging your face to mud back and forth?

Then the childhood sweetheart that is portrayed as gentle-ish woman show her fang to the aunt, which not harming MC whatsoever, I feel like shaking her and ask if her character is set properly or not. This was the first time I feel rage for the antagonist to not to hurt MC. Figures I'm too accustomed by too capable MC like the princess wei yang, phoenix ninth heaven, etc.

But I have faith with second chance genre and the fact that it only has 334 chapter ^^ <<less

Although this is interesting, the giant ball of frustration you'll feel all throughout, and the major plotholes are working fulltime to counter that.

Mild spoilers ahead.

If you are one of those people who dislike Mary Sue novels for having overpowered protagonists, THIS IS THE NOVEL FOR YOU! The MC is so weak that the way she fights back has to be very subtle so there's hardly any faceslapping despite all the aggravating schemes. Even her brother is weak! Thus, the giant ball of frustration.

Aside from that, I can't seem to get... more>> past this question: if you're leaving anyway after a year, what's the point in "fighting back" as you say, and getting the Shi household's respect? Why struggle so hard and eat so much distressing crap in return for that puny faceslapping (more like facetickling) when you can just live out a peaceful life in one abandoned courtyard? Her husband will most likely protect her, or she could have requested that in their agreement. There's just no sufficiently credible reason to warrant all this struggle. I understand that she probably loathes the cousin, but the way it's written, it doesn't really feel like she wants to take revenge on her? It's more of a, if you think things are gonna go the same way they did in my past life then you have another think coming! Which again begs the question, what's the point if you're leaving anyway? Well, idk if it's just me, or the frustration is getting to me, but I'm find it hard to concentrate because of this plothole. Another thing I find really doubtful is, why wouldn't you tell your sweetheart that she just needs to wait a year before you can marry her in? It makes little sense. Storywise I can see why the author needed to do that, but I wish he/she had contrived a better reason. <<less

I like the FL actually, she doesn't have a golden thumb and is just a normal girl trying to make the best of things as well as she can in her situation. She's calm, sensible and honest. She's a little too weak-willed but she'd be a good friend who you'd like to spend time with.
The trouble is that every other character is extremely unlikable. The supposed ML is fickle boor with a low EQ, and all the side characters are extremely annoying. The usual romantic 'happy ending' of staying... more>> together is a sad ending in this case, you end up just wishing the FL could escape. <<less

What a fickle man.

No no no. Anyone, just anyone........ It is not worth reading as ML is acting like this.

FMC is gentle and all, she deserved a better and even another worthy ML, not this one.

How utterly disappointing. The beginning of the story was great; a pitiful but realistic MC, a ML worthy of change, and an intelligent antagonist. All interesting and well written characters. The plot was just my type, there was no idiotic revenge plot, the face slapping was minimal (honestly hardly there), and the romance was slow paced and just right.

Then everything took a nose dive to become the usual cliche storyline that plague this genre.

Spoiler

The antagonist loses all the scheming and intelligence she has for no reason. I accepted the fact that her trust in ML has been broken, alongside the fact that she was entering marriage with him under undesirable circumstances but how the hell did she start making such easy mistakes. From cussing up a storm, picking fights, and getting caught! It's like the qualities that made her a good antagonist (and therefor the story interesting, because MC actually had to work hard to fight against her and win ML's favour) went to dust.

Of course this happens right when the ML decides he can't "let MC go" despite promising her exactly that. What a piece of shit. I have no qualms about mediocre ML's and my bottom line for their behaviour is pretty high so I liked that he would have to genuinely change his opinions on MC for the romance to work but his change was too abrupt. He dropped feelings for the antagonist simply because the storyline wants him to, so to claim he never felt love for anyone before MC is disgusting and for his feelings to change so quickly and strongly was a major let down. He went from someone who I rooted for to change, to the reason I'm dropping this story.

I liked this story because the the women were written as realistic and intelligent, allowing the fight between them to actually have interesting stakes and twists and turns as to what would happen next to change ML's heart. There are no high stakes when the ML has seen through the act of the antagonist and already placed himself on the side of the protagonist 80 chapters into 200+ chapter novel).

I want to like this story since the premise is good but I can't quite immerse myself when mother in law tells the people at the table to 'dig in'. This is only one one part of it. A lot of the sayings were replaced with English equivalents, which is helpful except when it's replaced by middle or lower middle class English.

Kind of like hearing the queen say 'bust your chops'. I'll probably read this in the original form one day.

So probably more of a 3.5 overall, but the OTP was a 4.

It was slow, very slow at first. Then it went total Makjang/Maria La Del Barrio crazy in the last 40 chapters. The ending was pretty rushed as well, which was a bit of a letdown.

BUT.

Great romance, great OTP, and the male lead really came through at the end. A lot of the reviewers on here were fed up with the male lead because it seemed like he wasn't proactive or just sat around twiddling his thumbs. The realistic... more>> take could be a little soul-sucking at times, but I found it worth the perseverance. The characters here have hands that are tied by filial piety and unfortunate circumstance. No golden fingers or magic fix its. There's a happy ending but it takes a while to get there.

The author also seems to really enjoy creating the worst relatives ever. Like if there was an Olympic sport or Guinness world record for writing the most deplorable, annoying, excruciatingly thick-skinned, and shameless family members... this author would win all the awards. Good god. There isn't really any standard face-slapping either. The satisfaction is super slow-burn. Also the mother-in-law never really gets better, she just disappears after a while.

Anyways I stayed up til 4:30 in the morning reading this so I have a lot of thoughts. p.s. If like me, you have to MTL the ending because you don't want to pay Creative Novels $30, then just run the original raws on shubao through google translate or deepl. It's a lot better than the MTL versions I found online. <<less

Been reading this since two years ago and actually finished it but never got the chance to write review.

This is a story centered around a family. This is not a story involved with palace intrigue, country war, military, noble fighting or some sort of elaborate themes. No. This is a story of a marriage between husband and a woman and how they deal with each families matter IN ANCIENT CHINA. That's it.

So, I've been asking myself why was this story is so complicated with long chapters. Even a more elaborate... more>> story with war, politics, palace intrigue and so on did not go over 250 chapters, most of them are only up to 100. First MC needed to deal how to separrated with her uncle greedy family, after this happened and done, we could actually say bye bye to her family's matter. Her own family were 2 elder brothers, and they loved her and always supported her.

After that, she went to deal with her husband family, that was his mother, and his cousin turned into the second wife/concubine. Oh and his snobbish sister that married to a sloppy lazy scum pretended to be a noble scholar that didnt have any job {bankrupt with debt everywhere so went back to her mother and brother for help and stayed}.

The struggle to deal with the cousin's scheme was an enormous long ass fight. The cousin got the support of mother in law coz she was her sister daughter. And mother in law was one gigantic buffoon of foolishness. Sometimes mother in law could be fair and a lot of times she would be unreasonable just bcoz she feared her son would not listen to her anymore, and she wanted to let her two married children to be treated the best even if it was not right and wrong.

After she managed to secure her husband's heart, and got favored by him, she needed to deal with the sister in law that prefer the cousin more. The sister in law and the cousin worked together to plot schemes over schemes. This went on and on like how many long ass chapters. Oh did I forget to write that the process was very very humoungously long, and there was alw a scheme popped out of nowhere and wait for her to sink into it.

Oh, forgot, that MC also needed to deal with the second and third uncle families of his husband. So yes, another lot of characters with schemes and evil mind to tackle. Not forgetting she needed to manage the servant too.

Such a gruesomely tiring life MC walked upon. But the worst of it, we were only told the end of the cousin but not the sister in law and her husband, also the author didnot write much of the mother in law by the end. Totally not satisfied. Why woudl the author not write more about it but instead inventing new characters which used a short while, and only served as filler and unnecessary was really disappointing. <<less

hi.

I love a good rebirth-revenge novel as much as the next person, but tragically, this isn't one of those. there is nothing satisfying about watching the FL get f*cked over constantly, WITHOUT her returning it back. I mean, the ML is sh*t, the family is so... s*upid? incapable? idiotic? Without the ML, the mom would have been KO'ed SO QUICKLY and why can n o o n e, not a s I n g l e person, see that the cousin/concubine is a b*tch. what's going on there? This is rather hard to review since I believe that you'll either like the story, or you'll find the characters unbearable.

As a modern person reading the mindset of the novel's characters is rather hard especially since there's complete acceptance of it, and those who judge said mindset are themselves judged.

Spoiler

The unquestionable respect towards your elders, regardless of their character, be they a thieving uncle, or an abusive alcoholic father. The belief that a woman must be subsurvient to her husband in all things. Obey him and his mother unquestionably. All the ways in which she can ruin the husband's reputation.

[collapse]

If you can read all that and not mind, that's the first hurdle.

Spoiler

I see many people in the comments judging the cousin very harshly. I dissagree. She was a young girl who was for years in love with a man who supposedly loved her back but still married another. She grew up with an abusive father who drank and beat her mother to death. Of course she wants to hold on to the one chance she sees to escape her horrible life. The people in the household who disliked her do so because she expressed her own desires to the ML, and didn't see him as her God. How is that bad? She's her own person. In any other story she'd be the MC.

[collapse]

I agree with some of the other reviews that pointed out that the main problem in the story is the ML.

Spoiler

In the past life he ignored his wife so much that she ended up dead. And some say he was deceived by cousin but NO. He was the one who agreed to go through with the marriage in the end. As is pointed out at some point, the bride's family can't cancel an engagement. So as soon as he married she was his responsibility because who else could she possibly rely on in that house?? And he failed her so completely.

And now, well, he expects the cousin to believe him because of course she should know that he'll NEVER lie. All I can say is that actions speak louder than words and all I see is him telling her the modern version of 'of course I'll divorce my wife and marry you! I just have a slight issue so wait a bit more and act as my mistress'.

And he starts liking his wife more and more because she's so accommodating and never complains. Basically, she's easy. So what's not to like?

[collapse]

All that said, why did I give this a 4?because I'm aware that while I find the premise very problematic, many others wouldn't mind. The story flows nicely and the MC is relatable in that she's no genius that can talk her way out of any situation. If all the problems aren't something that'll ruin your enjoyment give this a try. <<less

I am quite fond of these ancient rebirth novels. However they do tend to often be carbon copies of each other a lot of the time.

In that regard, Rebirth of an Abandoned Woman has a few things to make it stand out from the rest of the crowd.

The first part might seem minor, but I do enjoy that this for once not set in either an Emperor's or (Crown) Prince's harem, but instead in a well-off (although an extremely well-off one at that) family. It means that there is very... more>> little, so far, outside politicking going on and most of the navigation of plots is within the family itself, rather than also suddenly focusing on the traditional battle for who becomes the next emperor.

The second part is that the MC is not a complete psychopath that has perfect memory of every single thing that happened from she married in her previous life, up to her death and their ploys are always perfect. Don't get me wrong, I love those stories as well. However, I do like that this one is a lot more relaxed in that regard. Our MC sets out early to not stir up too much trouble, and if some does come to find her to (as much as possible) avoid it and not retaliate since she knows that she is very much in a situation where the people with power (her husband, her mother-in-law, and her cousin-in-law to begin with) will never take her side.

And thirdly, shockingly, not all the other women (minus maybe one or two personal servants) are poisonous snakes waiting in the grass to strike. At least so far. Admittedly that part might change down the road for all I know, though usually if there was someone "loyal" that was to betray the MC we'd have already seen at least a few signs here and there by now I'd hope.

Otherwise, it develops along the lines you'd expect.

Spoiler

A disinterested husband that, due to her unique personality and how she holds herself, becomes intrigued and interested by her and comes to see the faults and flaws in the antagonists over time. A mother-in-law that has to be pampered and handled like a rare antique so as to not explode right in the MC's face. She is not as aggressively awful to the female lead as in a lot of other similar stories, but she doesn't exactly treat her well and expects a lot out of her for no reward and instead treats the main antagonist, the cousin-in-law, like she is the real wife as long as she can get away with it. An antagonist that will stop at nothing to become the main wife, though it is abundantly clear that it is not for some sense of love she has towards the male lead, however his feelings towards the antagonist-cousin seems to be quite genuine. The author does manage to add in some sympathy for the antagonist as well, she hasn't had the best life, her one way out of her dreary life with a gambling-addicted father is to become a member of her cousin's harem. Especially as she is stuck in an awful spot once her father finally does pass, because of the archaic ritual of having to observe filial piety towards her deadbeat dad for 3 years before marrying. Naturally, after having seen first-hand how his feelings towards the MC has changed over the course of the story so far, she fears that eventually he will forget her completely in those three years. And thus has little other choice than to become his concubine, rather than his wife, upsetting the male lead who realizes that maybe she doesn't really love him like he does her. I honestly feel like it would be very interesting to read the story as seen from the cousin's perspective as well, because she might be the most fleshed out character of the entire story.

I will give bonus points to the author for having at least some of her family genuinely care for her, since this is a rarity in these types of novels. I'm hoping we get to see more of her sister-in-law and youngest brother as the story moves on.

[collapse]

Overall the only "major" complaint I have so far is that we are sadly "only" getting about one chapter a week, which means it'll still be a long while until the story is completed.

Tl;dr: If you aren't into a more down-to-earth protagonist in a rebirth series that aren't just there to scheme and mu*der everyone who wronged them, this is not for you. However if you, like me, need a break from those rebirth novels then this might be worth your time at least checking out. So far, this is a solid 4.5/5 for me, rounded up to a 5 for now. <<less

This is the type of story that you like, but not sure if you want to keep it in your reading list.

While the cousin is a basic bit*h, the ML's sister is a tyrant witch and his brother-in-law is a mediocre wuss, the ML himself is not so... good either.

At first, it was a good read. MC and ML just get to know each other with occasional bit*h making appearance and MC trying hard to please the old shrew.

However, as the story progress, with all this series of annoying side... more>> characters popping up... the story went downhill for me.

Mostly its just the same plotline.

Someone hate MC for no reason, easily manipulated, childish attempt to take revenge, and just being plainly s*upid.

MC hands are tied, ML hands are tied, they could only protest in silence and rebuke cynically against the antagonist who only appear solely if they have something 'brilliant' to cause havoc in our protagonist live.

Really?

The story is set in your own house, for god sake.

I need to wait till few hundred chapters so I could skip filler chapter and not hating the story completely. <<less

The more I read this novel, why do I find the MC more annoying? There should be a limit of being passive duuuh...

I kind of Like the ML because I can see where he comes from, and how he acts is believable, considering his situation...

And the story is somehow being dragged out by the author...
