One day, Song Shuhang was suddenly added to a chat group with many seniors that suffered from chuuni disease. The people inside the group would call each other ‘Fellow Daoist’ and had all different kinds of titles: Palace Master, Cave Lord, True Monarch, Immortal Master, etc. And even the pet of the founder of the group that had run away from home was called ‘monster dog’. They would talk all day about pill refining, exploring ancient ruins, or share their experience on techniques.

However, after lurking inside the group for a while, he discovered that not all was what it seemed…

The author seems quite ambitious in building a rather complex setting, however, they seemingly lack the ability to fully develop it, resulting in the story ending with quite a few "unfilled holes."

Spoiler

Bonus: I'm not too fond of the author's decision to make Sixteen and MC canon, as I find their relationship quite boring, awkward, and even lacking the depth to be considered love.

It's definitely not perfect, but this is by far the most chapters I've ever read of something (next highest is about 2000). Some of the jokes definitely drag on, but overall it actually manages to stay pretty fresh throughout all these chapters.

It definitely chooses comedy over logic pretty frequently. There are multiple things that would've definitely made me drop it far sooner if it was a more serious tone (and eventually dropped anyway, but over 2k chapters later). The main ones are time bullshit, the romance, and dragged-out jokes, although... more>> there are definitely more problems. There are multiple of what strongly seem to be time paradoxes, although I haven't finished so I won't add the tag just in case. The romance is absolutely glacial. It's not too unreasonable based on in-world time, but based on chapter count... spoiler for progress:
Spoiler

THIS GUY HASN'T EVEN PROPERLY KISSED ANYONE YET.

There was also one of the girls that was basically forgotten by the author for a long time because he wanted best girl to win. I do agree with best girl, but the route to get there was pretty bad.

That I managed to read so much despite how aggravating I find those three things shows the overall quality. I highly recommend reading at least until a bit after he accepts cultivation as real, things really pick up after that. <<less

Starts off slow, becomes fun, then enters the weird absurdity realm. From the moment Senior White appears, it becomes a full non-sense comedy. It was great up to that point.

This novel is quite funny, however that does not imply that it fails in other aspects such as having a detailed world or emphasizing the characters (I'm serious, literally all the characters have something to tell and the relationship between the characters is taken into account because of the role that karma has in this novel) not only that but unlike other novels here establish rules and levels that do not change or break in the middle of the series as happens in others (also each has something that differentiates... more>> it from others which makes them unique), If I had to say something bad, it would definitely be that events occur with little time between them, which means you don't have time to rest.

also

Spoiler

the ending is quite dissapointing, pitch-black sun has no personality and the plan about 8 hevanly way and skylark were undeveloped, also the black forms that came to end the cycle are not explained properly and just felt like a non-existing threat

This is by far the funniest Chinese webnovel I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Our main male protagonist Song Shuhang is an ordinary mortal who is accidentally added into a chat group filled with immortal cultivators. This is the start of his journey to becoming one of the strongest cultivators in the world.

What I love about Cultivation Chat Group is the characters. Despite the huge cast, each and every character is different and has their own quirks. The main lead is also not some evil villain or saintly... more>> figure, he's just some normal guy with abnormal powers. In this novel, Shuhang grows powerful very quickly. What others take centuries to do he does in months. The author writes about Shuhang's power climb very well by adding humor to it and giving him one ultimate power: luck. Shuhang is no powerful genius, and he's no women magnet either. I am excited whenever Shuhang gains power because he does so by going against the odds and fighting his own obstacles.

One small thing about this novel has to be the slow pacing. Several events can happen in one day, which can be stretched into at least one or two hundred chapters. Expect the problems that show up to be resolved in the very distant future rather than instantly. This novel is especially slow in the beginning as he takes at least 60-100 chapters to begin his cultivation journey. Once you stick it out though, you will be rewarded immensely due to how hilarious this story is. The chapters themselves are small, which means that despite translators releasing one chapter a day there is not much that goes on if you are already caught up. This is the type of novel where you have to stockpile chapters so you can read a bunch at once for maximum enjoyment. Although I say this, it is also a benefit that translations are decent and scheduled which means there's little chance of this story going MIA. <<less

I can only say this novel is unique considering how cultivation novels are.

There are many positive things to talk about this novel either comedy or how normal it is. Yes, this novel is normal, you can't find braindead annoying characters in this novel. But there is only one downside and that is pacing is too slow.

It's interesting at the start and some parts made me laugh but as I progressed reading till now, It doesn't feel funny anymore like at the beginning. Though, there's still some part which is funny, I'm tired of reading 'just as' this and that which made me think MC as a jackass.

Well, since I'm still at chapter540, I might as well endure and maybe some interesting plot may occur later on and change my rating to 5, if possible 4.5.

This would've been 5-star actually. If anything it would be the first and only Chinese novel that I gave such high ratings.

Reason being are that the author put forth quite a bit of effort into it. Many interesting things keep coming out making you addicted and cannot not stop. There are comedies and a bit of romance that isn't light or too hardcore which made it very pleasant to read as I'm not into romance stories.

Though the main plot came a bit after 2k chapters, it was good. Now readers... more>> can start to imagine, guess, and expect many things that might happen later.

Only downside is that after 500 chapters or so, you can tell that the writer is getting lazy. You can see that the focus was lost and no concentration whatsoever. Alot of reiteration keeps popping up. Many unwanted fillers came wantonly without being welcome one bit. Side characters are put on the bench unlike from the earlier stages of the story (the trend of Chinese writers usually exaggerate quite a bit when introducing a side or support character and later were put on the shelf to collect dust and resulting in losing value to zero like penny stocks).

Spoiler

I was like expecting to see the little girl got cure and turn into a hot chic and fight over the others since she doesn't want to lose her only Papa Song (LOL). Or that one demon disciple later turn into or evolve into a mutated phoenix. They only get some airtime of a sentence or 2 every 500 chapters or so. I was also hoping that the little monk with hemorrhoids and the 2 little girls would come back and bring more menace to Papa Song but unfortunately I think they've been axed and no longer getting airtime (so sad-i think it would hilarious for them to bring salvation towards the red demon sword).

The writer later went from a novel template to My Superstar template where he abuses the use of "commenting/opinionated sentences" to the extreme.

As for the novel reviews on the technical side: character personality building was great. You can see and imagine the characters as how they are just by reading. There are many plots but the main one will take a while to take shape. I'm caught up to the raws of 2600+ chapters. I highly doubt that the writer would want to stop milking from so many fat cows in China. The writer has enter the LAZY mode of the infamous writer of Demons and Gods novel who would writer a chapter every month while putting in alot of effort into the crappy manga and anime.

Currently this novel is @2 chapters/day for now. We might be able to see it finish by end of 2020 (fingers crossed). Don't even expect the MTL (google translate) translation to be finish by 2030. <<less

It's pretty good. Lots of comedy, and it brings cultivation to the modern era.

That being said, you shouldn't try to deconstruct the power system and its explanations of cultivation, as the power system is rather arbitrary fit to the author's taste.

Hillarious series. The comedy is amazing, and our "Nice Guy" is not so nice at times. It is a deconstruction of the wuxia / xiania / Chinese martial art/ cultivator genre, and it is amazing.

This is my go to comedy novel. If you don't like this novel then you probably aren't reading it right and need to take a different approach. Sure it's unbelievable and many of the situations are a bit ridiculous, but that's the point. It's kinda like watching Friends (popular american sit com), it's just funny and shouldn't be taken seriously at all. This novel never gets old and seems to always surprise me with some of the craziest things imaginable. Kinda spoiler, but shouldn't ruin any of the fun... more>>

Like a dog flying a helicopter, being launched into space, tractor racing, teaching Chinese to primitive island folk, or flying on a nuclear missile around the world.

It also has lovable characters that don't get old or stale. Though there is one character that I found annoying, but he's gone now and out of sight and out of mind so it's okay. Anyways, give it a shot. It requires imagination like most other novels, but if you get it just right, you'll laugh until it hurts. <<less

It starts a bit slow, but quickly improves. Undoubtedly its a comedy first and foremost, but it is also imaginative and entertaining. I also like how each character has their own characteristics, and they aren't jsut a means to move the plot where the author wants, they seem to have some agency.

I'm still very early on, but I find it very entertaining which is why I give it 5 stars

It's pretty damn hilarious, kind of reminds me of hitchikers guide to galaxy except cultivation version ;)
Starts slow though, gets better as you proceed.. Untill it becomes a clusterf*ck of hilarious trolling..
Author keeps on setting various flags only to trigger them few hundred chapters later when you forget about them in some unexpected way. As if that wasn't enough he keeps on building expectations, and then completely messes them up or destroys them in an absurd and hilarious way.. It's pure masterpiece.

Refreshing and funny. MY favorite cultivation novel.

If you are looking for something different, and well planned plot, this is it.

Also, I like how the author builds characters. Every character has depth. They are not nice or evil "just because".

There's so many people who compare CCG and RPS, but I think CCG is far way above RPS. CCG show us the unique way of cultivator on the modern time. You will see so many character with their own trait. I've seen many novel with genre modern-cultivation, but just few of them that success to fuse it. CCG success to fuse the modern and cultivation theme. And that's what makes CCG very unique.

Sorry for the bad english... Still learning and improve it

You can think this as KonoSuba of cultivation genre in the modern world. MC is 'courting disaster then get lucky' trigger happy and strong enemies are beaten in somewhat comical/anti-climatic way. It's packed with parody/satire of the genre and other pop cultures enriched by craziness and absurdness that you'd never expect. Some examples are immortals/cultivators are actually pretty bored, they play farmv*lle-like game.

If you're new to cultivation genre, I suggest to read a couple of cultivation novels first like Coiling Dragon, BTTH, Stellar Transformation, etc to familiar yourself to the... more>> cultivation mind/culture and jargon or you'll miss most of the hidden comedy about cultivation. It's not like you'll miss it as the author also explain bits here and there but those who have read cultivation novels are often felt that they can predict the 'outcome' but over here, their expectation get betrayed in hilarious way. It's like you're placing yourself like seniors' shoes in the novel, hence the hidden comedy. <<less

It's pretty funny, the story is set in modern life, the MC begins cultivating due to a chat group and so far there is no generic arrogant clan member and fight the whole clan.
