I agree with previous reviewers that refers to Ark as a pale copy of LMS. It gets off on similar premises, but the plot builds up differently. Even if we take them separately, Ark remains inferior. The main character is hard working, but not likeable at all on the way he make use of people and NPC around him. The plot is interesting, but gets unnecessarily dragged out at some points.
Still, Ark is well-written and is one of the best novel with game setting. There are adrenaline-inducing conflicts here... more>> and there, plus silly romance that doesn't go anywhere. If you like novels with game theme, then it's a must read. <<less

I wanted to give a 4, but then I'm thinking about Legendary Moonlight Sculptor and I ended noting Ark with a 3. I'm going to compare the both novels in this review, sorry if you don't read LMS.

The lack of "depth" and the inconsistency, I guess is my main problem with this novel. The psychology of the MC and the people surroung him are quite confusing, while he's being extremely greedy, it doesn't turn off any of his companions => They're here to help him because of his mother and... more>> most of them don't win anything from it... So we're constantly reminded of his mother throughout the novel but sometimes, he ends up being incomprehensible like when his love interests are involved and then, the mother is completely forgotten. So the mother is quite the convenient excuse but the author doesn't completely go through with it.
Spoiler

He hesitates to kill his enemy because of his love interest. Then, in the same chapter, he doesn't care about his other love interest being killed because he says that it's just "ingame" so he doesn't care ?
Then, he ends up dating nobody, way to let his mother down.

[collapse]
In LMS, while the MC is awful with everybody, his comrades follow him for the "win-win" situations. Then, his personality improves with time because of his love interest. Ark tries to develop the same pattern but fails badly at it.

Then, the plot is not really that well constructed. He always do some quest and ends up in a pinch then his genius brain allows him to find a solution during the moment of crisis. A simple example from the beggining of the novel, it's not really a spoiler : He wants to get a job at Global Exos and he doesn't know how to get money during the trial period, he lies in his bed and then "ding", a flash appears and he remembers that he saw in a documentary on TV that he can win money from selling items of the game on internet. That's actually what turns me off the most in this novel, the MC always acts rash and ends up getting his way when he doesn't plan anything.

In LMS, the results of every quest is from careful planning, when it's not well planed, he ends up getting tr*shed, which is the logical issue.

FInal result : Ark being an ok read but a pale copy of LMS, a lot of moments in the novel ends up flat and not that enjoyable. The quests for his profession are interesting though. There are funny moments and some scenes that hit you right in the feels (that's what keeps it above the average). So it's more like a 3, 5 but the site doesn't propose this option. <<less

A good read, the only thing I'm upset about is the amount of holes left to plug at the end, A lot of things left open for people to wait and see in the sequel. The game elements are good and all that jazz, the only real gripe is that out of all the players our MC is chosen to take so many epic level quests.

I do recommend this if people like LMS and SOA. =P
