In a Fantasy world in which a young girl with the Divine Protection of the Hero battles against the Demon Lord. In that world, Red, the elder brother of that young girl Hero, possessing the Divine Protection of the Guide which only grants a high initial level, fought in the initial party of the Hero.

However, with a Divine Protection that only grants a high level but no magic nor martial art nor supernatural ability, he gradually could no longer keep up with the battle and in the end, a companion, a Sage, remarked ‘You are not a true companion’ as he snatched all his equipment and kicked him out of the party with just a single copper sword.

Having his heart completely shattered, Red distanced himself from the battle against the Demon Lord’s army despite knowing that the fate of the world rests on it, aiming to live an inconspicuous life alone at the frontier Zoltan as he earns money to open a herbalist shop by utilizing the knowledge he acquired throughout his journey.

Together with the Half-Elf Carpenter living downtown and the Princess who couldn’t become the Hero’s companion, he aims to live a slow life in the frontier of the world governed by a person’s inborn Divine Protection!

As of chapter 11 it's a good execution of a slice of life genre in a fantasy world. Would be 5 stars if we dropped the "MC is OP but everyone think he is not" trope, and if he had more balls. Note, this is light novel/web novel 4 stars, not literature 4 stars.

Also, the translation quality is far above average (as usual for TseirpTranslations)

If you browsing trough reviews to look if MC isn't typical japanese Beta, then search no more.

MC is bonafide BETA who author write as "smart" but actually s*upid.

It looks like the author trying to make a unique story but not construct it well.

The only good thing about this story is actually the translator who did a good job.

Surprisingly better than most "OP protagonist gets 'banished' and forced to live a slow life, " kinda novel. Characters have actual inner conflicts and motivations often opposing one another. Villains have a functioning brain most of the times though you know they'll always act weirdly irrational and then be outsmarted by the protagonist at the end. There's romance and fluffy moments but it all completely crumbles once the little sister and the in*est bait start. The heroine and the little sister form a love triangle that is never explored, the... more>> author pretends it's not there while simultaneously c*ckblocking everyone.

There's a lot more to nitpick or to praise but reading this far I feel like I was pleasantly surprised considering I expected the most s*upid sh*t ever. I'd recommend trying it.

A side note nitpick:

Spoiler

isn't it weird how every demon they face spews some super ominous and creepy line about "how the role of the hero is not what they think! The hero is actually not a good guy. They're much closer to the demon king than you think! Muahaha!" and then the characters pretend not to hear it? Lmao

Also, it has an okay translation. MTL'd with editing. I know it's really really hard to edit long ass chapters without making mistakes and having to basically rewrite them. Can be a bit distracting but very good job tho. <<less

Was ok at first and I do like slow life so I did read quite far into the novel but then the cringey cliches started piling up and I couldn't bear it anymore so I put it on hold.

One thing I have to commend is that Red's character seems fairly consistent in his settings and the characters are somewhat written stably.

I actually liked Lit and Red's slow life together but know the flashbacks and other characters pov are piling up so yeah it ain't much of a slow life now.

Okish... more>> story? 1.7 stars <<less

I really enjoy this novel very much.

Despite being a slice of life, this have a solid story. You would not find long paragraphs that focused on explaining cooking or crafting in this story.

Even side characters is "alive" with story and reason behind their action.

Title is a lie, so I gotta knock off a point for that. I hate it when LNs bait-and-switch like that, just know that it's not really a "slow life", lots of plot happens.

However it is pretty slow in its pacing and it's following the MC's life so there's that. Otherwise I'd say this is pretty generic, it's just okay. The plot is contrived and centered around making a humble MC look powerful and capable, so if you've read LNs before you know what you're getting into, right?

Very good mix of slow life and action. Quality of text and translation is pretty good (i can't remember any irking moments).

Personally I like this type of protagonist who has already accomplished something and has come to terms with world around him so he is neither classic OP nor weak but smart nor your typical lucky weak to strong type.

Lots of love to author for respecting both readers (no foreshadowing each chapter for 300 ch or s*upid subversion of expectations) and his heroes (no acting out of character out of... more>> the blue, intelligence fitting their positions)

So I urge you to give it a try for 20-30 ch. <<less

This is an OK novel, it focus more on the simple life of a former hero team member, how he deals with problems and so on. Quit enjoyable to read. Slow paced.

MC is your typical japanese hero. So remember that. He's not the type that always think with his lower half. That's how he is. Don't expect more le*d development. His divine protection is tr*sh. Good in early stage but has low growth potential. MC know this, that's why he always try his best to be more of a versetile... more>> hero. But well he has insecurity because of this. People always complain about him no matter how much effort he give. Got kicked out of hero party and try to have a slow life. But forgot that life problem will always come haunt you back. And now trying to solve the problem while keeping the slow life that he get.

The end. 4/5

There is more to it about how he gain more confident and all but I'm too tired to write. <<less

Japanese Slice-of-life. I give it 3* because the setting would be interesting in a "real" novel.

There are a few good things about this novel:

  1. It has the best explanation for the s*upid class/exp system in a novel I've ever read. Seriously, it even makes a good effort in explaining why killing slimes makes you a better cook
  2. The hero doesn't spend years flirting with heroine only for someone to poop the party when they're about to kiss. That's right: the hero actually starts with a relationship!
  3. The villains actually has a reason beyond the usual "I'm evil because I'm evil"
And that's it

As with all fantasy slow life novels,... more>> the hero is actually a super OP best of the best who can solve problems beyond what his skills actually say. It starts with "well I usually do the menial tasks so I'm pretty good at this" and immediately jumps to "I know I said I have no skill whatsoever in this but I'm actually the best of the best in literally each and every single thing"

It's sort of the major problem that slow life novels so far can't fix: a story needs conflict to be gripping, conflicts need resolution, resolutions need actors, and that actor happen to be the hero because of course it is otherwise it's not a story of someone's "slow life" but a compilation of fables

This novel starts with what is quite honestly a pretty good setup. The hero has been away for quite some time and hasn't done anything major yet. Over time since conflicts need to escalate, his powers are revealed to be top notch, and his alchemical skills - which he ascertains to be low rate because he has no access to alchemical skills - is suddenly capable of treating all sorts of illness and wounds

Which is, you know, would be fine if it comes from a journey of learning and experimentation but it's not. The hero makes amazing potions all the time, sometimes without even explanation. Another "slow life apothecary" novel "Drugstore in Another World" which is also super annoying to read through at least made an effort in that the hero started out selling only a single type of potion and only added more when duly prompted by someone else

The story in this novel is nothing gripping. Somehow I don't really care what will happen to the characters, they're too one dimensional and the slow life interactions aren't entertaining. I mean, yea there's a little flirting here, a watching sunset together there, nothing much.

Reading this novel feels like... it's trying to tick some boxes in between the "real" story. Oh yeah, we have a cute waifu here, and she has a bath scene, and she also cosplays! There's this imouto here, and she adores you! We also have a big b**bed oneesan and a loli! Come one come all!

I mean, come on. Even in a slow life novel I'd very much prefer that "ecchi flirting" is kept to special events. Just because life is slow, doesn't mean life isn't full of problems. A completely average person would have problems like car breaking down, filing taxes, dealing with bureaucracy, stuff like that. Fly Me To The Moon gives a great example of how a "slow life" can also be full of challenges <<less

I like this novel. As it happens with all novels, there are good parts and bad parts. But overall this one is interesting, to me.

So as a basic premise we have that the hero party is full of monsters, all chars are giga OP. The word of the novel is controlled by what is called divine protection, which defines each individual's attributes and skills (and some compulsions related to the protection). But at the party, there is one person with a shitty protection. He is the hero's older brother (the... more>> MC) that has the guide protection. As a protection that does not confer special skills, attributes, or anything for that matter, he is good by his efforts but can not keep up with the OP chars. So the novel starts as he is kicked out of the party by the sage, that sees him as a burden. So the MC ends up in the most inconspicuous (and far from the frontlines) town he knows and lives there as an apothecary.

This is the basic premise. And I will spoil it somewhat but there is more stuff happening in this faraway town than a "slow life" title should indicate. This could be called a trope of those slow-life novels where the plot seems to follow the MC to the calm town, or that this is the town with a secret, or that the original party ends up finding the MC and going on adventures that are the same as a normal hero party vs Maou gets to. This could be called false advertising and those novels could/should get some flak for that.

But there is one point that, for me, turns this novel special. And it is about the hero and the divine protections. I will put this under spoiler, as it touches some important plot points:

Spoiler

So, the MC's little sister is the hero, having the hero divine protection. This protection is the best and worst protection that exists. She has the most OP skills and attributes, but this mines her humanity. For example, she has a skill that protects her from negative status, so she literally can not sleep, so she ends up passing most of the nights alone. Considering those negative traits that the hero protection brings, the hero becomes something like a machine, that in turn gets her away from the humans that she protects. So there is a duality that is explored in the fact that the hero is compelled by the protection to save people even if she does not want it, and the more she saves people, the more she ups the protection level and the less human her attitudes get. So the MC wanted to help her, and being the only one that treats her as a person, he is essential to the hero's journey. But he is scammed by the sage that wants to use the hero status to save his broken noble family. And, as some other reviewer pointed out, this is shitty, as the MC is the closest person to the hero he should have the sense that the first thing he needs to do is talk and asses if he should leave the party. It could be justified as he knows that if she finally has at least one OP companion that can and treats her as a real companion and a person, he would be at peace and get out of the way of the party. But we end up learning that the party is in the shits as he was the conjunctive tissue of all those OP monsters and the one that guided them to the best path to destroy Maou. So this is one of those novels where the MC that everyone thought was useless was the most important. And this is meh.

But the hero healing, aka, humanization is the part that gets me. I know that it could be seen as cheap drama. But the little hero that was always seemed as an entity above humans that all fear and distance themselves from, start to become a young girl that she always longed for internally. This is the true highlight of this novel and, to me compensates for all the dull usual plot points this novel has. Of course, there is fun to be had when the MC gets his "revenge" from the sage, or when he is the one that solves everything even considering his shitty protection. But those pale in comparison to the hero humanization to me. Considering that, I would call this a (somewhat) healing novel.

There are some other points of consideration, such as the fact that the new Maou is part of a demon race that has no protection. There are some hidden truths of the protection existence, world history, and even the god that defines/gives the protections. Those are interesting world-building and plots, to me, and would justify reading this novel too.

[collapse]

So at the end of the day, I would recommend the reading. Just know that this is far from slow life (that is resumed as the MC doing some cooking, mostly) as there is always some special sh*t happening in his backyard every 20 chapters. But, considering the points that I raised in the spoilers, this is an enjoyable novel. <<less

It's OK.

Apart from the fact that the entire novel is a load of bs. It's the exact opposite of what you think it would be. There's some kind of situation where the MC needs to step in in pretty much every chapter.

It's still good tho, we've just been miss-informed. Honestly I just came here for the fluff but there isn't any. Maybe a couple of lines of: "I love you" or hugs and cheek kisses blah blah.

If the premise wasn't a 'Slow life' it'd be a good JP Fantasy noveli... more>> guess. <<less

A refreshing slice-of-life story mixed with JP-style adventure world. You can see MC as a person who saw a bigger picture yet a bit egoist somehow to avoid disturbance from his daily life.

I don't recommended this novel to people with high testosterone since this novel is not written to be WN version of Hokuto no Ken.

It's a bit repetitive in saying the MC is incapable of becoming strong. But he most certainly is not weak. They touch on the technicalities and formalities one must go through in order to do common things in this fantasy world. They use these parts to push the story forward, giving clear reasons why the MC must do things this way. Though it can be boring it can also be entertaining to anyone who can relate to it.

The characters remind me of what an actual neighborhood would be like. No... more>> one is really stereotypical, seeming natural. Though it also makes no one seem interesting or memorable.

I like what I read. But will I read more? Probably not. <<less
