Ukei Kaito fought a desperate struggle in order to fulfill his role as a summoned hero. He defeated the Demon Lord and saved the very world, only to meet an end filled with betrayal. The companions that he’d trusted throughout his journey betrayed him and killed him by sticking a blade through his chest.

It was then that he swore to himself.

He swore that, if given another chance, he would no longer so rigidly cling to the concept of “faith/believe.”

He swore that, if given another chance, he would dedicate himself to enacting the most atrocious act of revenge possible.

He swore that, if given another chance, he would do things right.

「I’ll kill every single last one of you… I swear it…」

And so, he died, leaving behind not but a series of menacing last words — but his story had yet to end. A voice resounded through his head and informed him that there was more to his fate than what lay beyond the grave.

A really interesting read on anti-hero who greatly desires revenge to the point where his sanity is questionable.

Spoiler

>The hero gets betrayed by comrades
>Hero dies
>Time reversed and the hero sworn vengeance to those who betrayed him
>The once kind and naive hero became a bloodthirsty demon with a strange sadistic nature as a bonus
>Must read

Betrayals, betrayals everywhere. And revenge is the sweetest when you use your own hands to serve it cold.

Absolutely love this novel. The MC is smart, determined, decisive, cruel, and justified with his actions.

The motif of someone who was kind, but foolish in blindly trusting in someone to the point that they're taken advantage of... only to be slapped in the face with the treachery is so pitiful, us readers can't help but cheer on the anti-heroes in their journey for revenge. A major plus, it's not a harem. He... more>> gains just one companion, Minaris, who's charmingly twisted in her own right and that I have high expectations for.

So far, only 10+ chapters have been translated, but I'm definitely looking forward to more. (5/5) <<less

This is how "Tate no Yuusha" should have been, instead of MC still being soft against the people that betrayed him, he should be more like the MC from "Yobidasa Reta Satsuriku-sha." The MC in this series has every right to hate the world that he was summoned in, because he was betrayed by most of that world. In this series, we do not have an MC that is like a fish out water, he knows what his real goal and how to do it. I still consider the MC... more>> the hero of the story, because I see the Kingdom that betray them as evil. In other terms, the Princess is the true Demon Lord, and her followers the Demon army. <<less

Edit: Reduce fromm 5* to 3* due to most of the current chapter drag out for way too long describing random unrelenting event. Also I am sure this problem are mostly made during translation and that is it get very confusing figuring out who the hell is doing the talking when the number of speaker go above 3. Japanese speech have way of addressing themselves that got lost during translation and the translator either don't put much thought during translation or didn't notice but during big conversation, you could easily... more>> get lost figuring out who is doing the talking. Scene change willy nilly and fact are thrown around with little to no foreshadowing making reading scratch their head wondering "when the hell did this happen.

Spoiler

In c112 or 113, our bunny girl is suffering from disease due to plot convenience. MC spew some monologue saying it is relating to vampire but it is impossible cause he in the only one with the vampire lord bloodline remaining which confuse the heck out of everyone reading the chapter. He also said the cure can only be found in the fairy kingdom but I already destroy the fairy kingdom - a thing which has never been mention and wasn't even clarified if happen in the current timeline or the last timeline.

[collapse]

Also the cliche: when main girl got sick and MC is caring for her, random female stranger charge in claiming "you are doing indecent sh*t to the girl in the middle of no where oh and also I know the girl so leave her be or die" happen which is a blatant attempt to create drama and stretch out the novel. No doubt there would be 1 or half a chapter of fighting, another for explaining and then expositioning about that random girl background and then we would never hear from her again thus wasting all our time. Original Review: 5* rating

People nowaday throw word like edgy at all the manga/novel that show even a tiny hint of "revenge" theme in it. Hell even know how to kill people can even be call edgy by others. Let me be blunt, you either like these type of novel or you don't. This novel is about revenge and the author know his reader well. So far every chapter has been a an enjoyable ride for me. People call the MC crazy altitude edgy, annoying, I find it fun and from the rating, most people who like these kind of novel agree with me.

Now to the actual review. This is a Isekai with the "return back in time" trope that been going around lately. In short, after the summoned hero killed the demon lord, the world turn on him. For more details click the spoiler, it won't hurt much if you read it too.

Spoiler

Living as a fugitive for a few years then in the end, know everything he live for is a lie. To summon him, his classmate and teacher who were near him dies, his family whose he share similar blood dies so their blood can be made to open the portal. Knowing that he is basically broken and hell bent on revenge.

[collapse]

I can see why people compare this to Kaifuku (Healer Hero Revenge) but to me, Kaifuku is terrible. The writing are all over, author forgetting his own story line:

Spoiler

In the last chap author said the dude turn back to normal after he drink the poison but in later chap, the dude is still under the same face and had to wear a mask to hide his shameful face. Other similar instance happen too.

[collapse]

The MC in kaifuku is a hypocrite keep saying sh*t like "I am a good guy". Also the amount of s*x is just a pain to read. Every chapter is like: "we had a lot of s*x", "drink up so you can get more powerful", "let brew up this bullsh*t potion that make women very h**ny then mind break her to be a s*x s*ave". MC can't go on for over 2 chapter without having s*x and every fight that has a beautiful women involve MC killing all the dude, drug the girl crazy and r*pe her.

MC in Nidome however, see s*x as a needless prospect won't waste time doing such activities since it would not gain him anything. He will obviously blush and react if having a beautiful/sexy/cute girl actively courting for him but he doesn't go around banging girl randomly like the dude in Kaifuku. He acknowledge he is evil and acknowledged it is necessary for him to do it to achieved the revenge he want. That doesn't make him relate-able but at least better than that psychopath "I am a good guy" in Kaifuku. He won't go around killing people willy nilly but if you are sadly drag into his revenge skim, the term acceptable casualty exist for a reason. Other character also getting fleshed out as the novel proceed such as his first companion Yandere bunny girl Minaris (the lovely girl on the covers) and also his revenge stuff is very interesting to read unlike Kaifuku "r*pe her till she break" or "drink this x100 pain effect" approach. Obviously I am giving Kaifuku a lot of flak but to be fair, it started out great but turn into a s*x fes later on. <<less

I can't even imagine why some reviewers gave less than 4 stars to this novel, the raw itself is on another level compared to other works and the translator also helps a lot maintaining that quality.

This novel explores the concepts of "what to do with heroes when they are not needed" and "what happens if that hero came back to bite your ass", flashback chapters may bore you but they are needed to know what happened to transform the MC into a sadistic avenger so please read them.

Intense. This is hate-wank material. The author does a good job of portraying the absolute madness and desire for revenge the Main Character has (and his lovely companion too).

While it's sufficiently brutal, I'm a teensy bit disappointed in how... uninspired... the acts of revenge have been so far.

Spoiler

There have been two instances of "revenge" so far. One was just repeatedly healing and torturing the target. The other was shoving a bunch of people into a cage, driving them insane with a hunger spell, and making them eat poisoned food that turned them into goblins while making them suffer immense pain.

[collapse]

I'm worried that the author can't create satisfying enough resolutions for the great build ups. Maybe I've been spoiled by how extremely creative Dungeon Defense is at torture, but I was expecting more. We'll see as the story goes on.

EDIT: Gets better as the story goes on. While you may feel that the MC goes overboard, that feeling will be significantly reduced by Chapter 24. Also, he's not completely gone. At one point he realizes that it's important to avoid involving innocents in his revenge, as much as possible. Simply because he wants his revenge to be perfect in both execution and essence. In his own words,

"The line between killing for vengeance and killing to vent my anger." <<less

it is gonna be fluffy between the hero and maoh! I am sure at least between them!
joke aside, this Story seems pretty interesting since I have always been interested in reading a Story about a hero who has been persecuted after having fulfilled his duty since I have read about them in the hero Bulletin board~. But most stories I have read is about heroes who have been abandoned before that so this is a nice Change for me~

Edgy revenge story with a sadistic protagonist who was betrayed and got to redo things so he decides to torture everyone who betrayed him in his first life.

It might be satisfying to people who like the revenge trope or teenagers who like edgy torture but there's not much else to it.

I tried to like it but I can't really empathise with MC's revenge when it was his own s*upidity and naïvity that f*cked him over in the first place, and it's not satisfying since his targets don't even remember what... more>> they did to him. The protagonist's enemies also feel contrived to be hateful to an illogical degree to make the revenge more justified but it just makes it feel less realistic to me. <<less

for those who likes blood and lots of scheming, I recommend this to you.

now then, let's discuss some points here. some people in the comments says that this is edgy, but pls, ignore those. they are not properly reading their dictionaries. if you gonna ask me, I can't see anything the MC did in the story edgy. I don't know what's going on on the minds of those people. also, it seems that they just hate the illogical things happening in the story so they become like that. I know,... more>> some of us are craving for some logics when reading, even me, because it will help us to understand more what's in the world the MC is in. but seriously, it just seem to me that the people, if there's no explanation to anything, they will just become dumb. what's in your shoulder, people?? a carrot?? cabbage?? or a stick?? probably stick. try not just reading. immerse yourself in the story. if you can't least do that, then stop. don't put a comment just because you dont understand shi*t. if you atleast read 145 chaps and still don't understand anything, I dont mind you rating it lower and point out some things that seems to be incomprehensible to you. but look what I see here.

"it's because edgy as f*ck I don't want to read it" (stops reading not even reaching a 100 chaps) "it says revenge plot yet what I see is only killing innocent people" (as long as I remember, there are no innocent to those they kill) "it's good at first but the MC mellowed out and started to limit those he kills, example nobles" (dude, are we really reading the same novel??) "it's becoming a story of harem collection in the middle which is generic to JP novel" (are you f-ing blind?? didn't you see the tag??) "he already lived for about 4 years there, betrayed, and also given a reset yet he still not using his brain" (huh?? which part are you talking about?? it seems to me that the MC is really using his head though. mostly for his revenge and the living environment of his accomplices) "instead of running away from there, he punched the princess and tortured her while monologing. he should be 21 years old in the 1st run yet he acted like this." (dude, did you really read it properly?? I don't know about you but if the most hateful person in my life showed up in front of me like nothing happened i'd really send him to hospital for physical and mental care) "he should just gain their trust then turn against them at some point" (that's the most dumbest idea i've ever seen. for the things they did to you, that's it?? as if you are saying if your family we're killed infront of you, you will just let off the killer without even calling the police you know) "too much monologing and MC thoughts" (huh?? what would you expect in a novel?? more over in a POV one?? are you ret*rd?? think over why there is too many monologing) "the princess is innocent, why torture her??" (t-this is the most fu*ked up comment I've ever seen...)

for those people who have the same comments like the sample comments I've written above, you can just go fly at the top of a mountain and lived there for the rest of your life. really, I don't mind criticism with advices at the end for improvement or some point outs for the author to see. but look, I just see idiots who can read but can't comprehend the things they read and just commenting some bullsh*t not knowing the whole premise of the story. we are blessed with bright minds but the people nowadays are only concern for what they like. if you don't like it, then F*CKING WRITE SOMETHING THAT WILL SATISFY YOUR NARROW MINDS.

also, please put aside your filthy morals here. like what you said, he already lived there for 4 years. 4 F-ING YEARS. he is already broken from the inside. he is already beyond insane. why would you expect morals here?? remember, he is already in a different world with a set of different rules compared to his previous world. his mind already settled in that kind of world so that he would not break in the 1st place but now it became the ground basis after his mind is broken.

Spoiler

he doesn't even want to come back to his original world anymore after being sent back to his original world

[collapse]

so yeah. he is just an insane man who wants revenge to those who broke him while also gathering his own harem because THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT.

so pls, if you don't like it, if you gonna ever leave a comment, just make sure your comment has more sense, because your just making yourself ret*rded if you leave a comment just because of s*upid reasons. I know it's internet. bust pls keep your humanity in it.

-Kuroshiro

Edit:

ahh... I can't... too much s*upidity in the comments... <<less

The first chapters/volume is a juicy bait. The rest of the novel is a pitfall. 5/10

It's either a brutal/psycho story, or a "*moe story" aka 'cute story'. Why would you mix them both author?? And both have the same ratio! It's near impossible to mix them!! To pull it off, you would need to make one helluva story! Ex. Re:Zero - dark story with moe characters, Dungeon Defence - dark story with a harem and few "moe" characters.

The "moe" fans most likely skipped this novel bc of such a dark... more>> start, and the readers you drew in are unhappy bc they never wanted *excessive* moe later on in the story. It's so, so, so disappointing and heartbreaking how the author butchered this novel's main genre and theme.
There are other cons such as: useless long flashbacks, useless long conversations, unorganized narration, hidden plots/plans for asspulls, cliché plots such as hero+demond lord romance, the accomplices thing, the MC being a moron, etc. But overall, they're not as inexcusable as the frankenstein mixture of revenge + cuteness.. Ugh! <<less

MEDIOCRE!!!

only reason I even gave its three is so I could write that, it’s true.

Anyway, I this novel the MC is a summoned hero who upon slaying the demon king is betrayed by some very, very racist people, aka, the people that summoned him. These people consider otherworlders less than tr*sh, the level of disdain these people have for otherworlders is unfathomable.

Atirallh he swears revenge and is given a second chance seing as the gods decided that your first time around is just a trial since people tend to die... more>> early from overestimating their capabilities when they are summoned as a hero. The diet thing he does when he returns to the moment he was summoned? Tortured and humiliated the princess in charge of summoning him of course. He does not kill her because that would be too easy. He then goes on a trip to become stronger so he torture literally every single person that slighted him in his previous life.

its understandable that he feels hate. However, in my opinion, the whole “dying would be too easy for them” thing has always felt really irrational.

th novel is fun for a while, you get to follow a Japanese hero that isn’t pacifist to a fault. However, it quickly becomes mundane. There is so much hatred and racism going on that it becomes tedious to read. <<less

Everyone is an a**hole. Just deal with it. This novel is about a**holes, not evil people, just simply a**holes. Kaitos companions - a**holes, Minnalis's village - a**holes, everyone in the kingdom - a**holes. If you want a story about evil characters and dystopia Dungeon Seeker is better than this. Kaito is a guy who saved the world and killed the demon lord than was killed by the kingdom he saved and that made him pissed (well if you wanted to quell unrest after the war I think using the hero... more>> as the beacon of hope, instead of backstabing him would be a better idea, but royals are a**holes so never mind). I think if your daughter and wife are getting lynched by angry mob, you wouldnt simply sent them to s*avery without second thought like Minnalis's father did (but again he is an a**hole) and if your best childhood friend just risked your life to save you, you wouldnt simply betray her right away like Minnalis's childhood friend did (but again she is an a**hole). Bottom line is that you are evil if you do terrible sh*t because you enjoy it or because you have a good reason for it. When you do evil stuff for incredibly s*upid and petty reasons (like the princess who hated Kaito as soon as he was summoned and procceded to betray him even after he saved the world or Minnalis's father and childhood friend who sold her and her mother to s*avery without second thought just because beastmen are "despised" in their country), then you are an a**hole. But the reason I gave this novel 3 stars and not 1 is because Minnalis and Kaito are just as pissed as I am (and the way they show it simply feels good). <<less

Here is the Light Novel with average revenge story. First thing of all, when I try read early chapter I feel interested with the concept of a hero who gain the second change to give revenge. But as the story progress I feel there is something that this novel lack for. The thing want to complain is the "reason". Finally found one of the uncommon stories where the hero has a bad past / personality. Seriously, it's kinda hard to find them; usually I only get stories where it's all talk about getting stronger and 'more gracious / benevolent / kind'... I am fed up with them.
Still, I wonder whether he can still trust someone who is not a s*ave in the future...

  1. The move is great it is like fresh breath after reading a lot of cn wuxie, shitty jp novel who are good at start where MC is weak but after just few chapter become op with cheat and just pick up girl everywhere and what's is worst, jp authors didn't give a damn about age, add a little girl to MC harme with reasoning like Loli are justice....a total crap.
  2. But this novel doesn't have such cliche and story is great.
  3. And lastly the guys giving one start and saying MC is just a maniac they could have tolerate MC behaviour if his parents were killed or something like that then I would like to tell them, that it did happen although it is more like a spoiler but I am still writing it that they not only betrayed MC but also killed his school friend & teacher as well as his family. The details are given in vol1 chapter 24, So yeah the guy from 1star rating read the novel before giving a review.
  4. For new readers I would like to inform you that most of 1star rating comes from hired 5-cent army so don't believe them untill you read it personally.

This novel started of great but at some point in time, it became super irritating. There are three reasons for that.

1. The MC is an anti-hero so you'd expect that it's not your typical lame s*upid justice-loving japanese character. He was, but in revenge instances he goes full ret*rd mode and ends up shooting himself in the foot.
Spoiler

in his revenge against the magician, the MC returned the memories of his opponent making her stronger and ultimately giving himself a hardtime. There was also the part wherein he overkilled the merchant by using his ultimate skill which gave him a recoil and made him vulnerable and ultimately getting cursed by btch saintess

[collapse]

2. The author focuses too much on unnecessary things. The flashback of MC is ok but why the hell would you do a flashback of nobodies that no one cares about. Instead of expounding the reason why it's beneficial for the MC to hold on to lvl 1 and other important things, the author goes telling useless tr*sh.

3. The author contradicts himself
Spoiler

The MC made a vow on first volume that he will not get innocent people be collateral damage to his revenge but hey he proceeded to the otherwise

Giving 4 stars for this series is pretty high for me, since I usually do not like revenge-themed series.

Many people dropped this way too early, with the pretense that it's 'edgy' or 'predictable' or 'shallow'. After reading this far, I do not regret picking up this series. This review shall be done differently from the common pros and cons.

Author's Writing Style

The author starts off the series with a simple premise where the MC was betrayed by the people who he trusted and got a second chance to redo it, which... more>> he then use it to sought revenge. The author usually writes what is happening at the current situation (which is damn confusing at first) but through many, many flashbacks/hints, we get to slowly unravel what happened in his first life or how the current situation came about. Of course, there are things mentioned that literally dropped out of the blue but due to the author's style, it will be explained eventually or in another arc

If you are not the patient kind and prefer things to be handed to you right away, you will call this story shallow because you will think its karma based on your assumptions or whatnot. With patience, you will see that the world is that... horrendous. Plus, readers should know that the requirements for hero summoning and reincarnation is different for this world so the fella who is complaining, think a little bit will you?

Worldbuilding

Through the flashbacks and hints the author give throughout the series, we will also slowly unravel the different places the world is made of. Readers (who just read vol 1) seem to think that it's just him moving to the next place where his target will be but due to many (and sometimes sudden) reasons, things won't go according to plan at times.

Speaking of world, this is so far the only isekai I know (as far as I can remembered) that shows us the aftermath on what happened after his disappearance (and the sacrifices) from Japan.
Spoiler

MC will be isekai back in one arc and boy the world wasn't a pretty place even after he got home. Yes, those who the princess said will die, indeed die

[collapse]

Harem

Yes this has elements of harem and you would be surprised on who would join him in the future. So if you don't like the idea of harem, maybe this is not for you but if you can overlook that part and read the story, you might find yourself liking this.

Killing

I don't like revenge stories in general as it's usually needless mu*der or the MC mindcontrolling his targets to do his bidding. His accomplices (3 girls and 1 guy) are already broken from the start so although the peddler Leone said that his is called "tame brainwashing", its more of like MC giving them a second chance to rise up but the price of it is that they will never betray each other and due to learning the events of one another's lives, they will share their vengeance (aka your target is also my target and vice versa). MC and co does not kill needlessly if they can help it as their targets (and those involved with them) are predetermined.

Predictable?

Not really. Maybe at the start yes (which many dropped ironically). There will be many places where the author will throw a wrench and go "Aha, caught you" to the reader's, to which we then have no idea on how the story will proceed. Also his targets of revenge are also scum to the point where, at the start I hope some would be resolved peacefully but now after I read this far I agree that all of them should suffer. Yes, there are commenters here who thinks he deserve it cos of his relationship (which is damn vague at the start so we dunno to what extent) with the demon lord but really, this are the very people who supports the scum in this story since they can only blindly make assumptions based on a few rumours (or a few flashbacks in the case of commenters here)

tldr; A person who dislikes revenge-themed in general is giving it 4 stars after reading 163 chapters (5 volumes?) so why are you not trying it out? <<less

Honestly the novel was fine until the inclusion of the bunny girl. It's like the author thought to himself: "I want a borderline psychotic MC who's out for revenge. Something new and badass but oh wait this is a Japanese novel so the MC still have to be beta somehow. I know, let's include a female s*ave character so he can be meek and subservient to". The logic behind this is also the most laughable thing I've read in a while. Here's an MC that have literally been betrayed by... more>> the entire world. Let's have him put his trust in this one random s*ave because "revenge is more fun when shared" and get instantly whipped by her. Such a waste of a good premise. <<less
