Sorry, but my choice is potato. How many times must I repeat myself? Potatoes are the only thing that’s needed in this world! All other things can go and die.

Today, I, an almighty potato, found my holy grail. May us potatoes be treasured by Fa'mu Potato, a wonderful man who is potato-sexual

Anyway, this is biased but it isn't at all bad of a novel, the author wrote the main character into one who has strange interests yet it doesn't seem unnatural and fake. The main character is.............

Just read this goddamn amazing novel and appreciate the potatoes.

who put the child abuse tag? Honestly that pretty sums up this story. The MC was abused as a child and in the story he is being abused by woman and children. Even when they hear of his past they still dont let up on the abuse. Its made pretty clear from the beginning that the MC is legitimently insane and just wants to live alone growing his potatoes, but the village hates him and shuns him, calling him a demon who will turn them into a potato.

I understand its... more>> done for comedic effect but from a westerns eyes (those that aren't sexist), instead of seeing a man being pummeled by beautiful woman and laughing, all we see is a man forced into an abusive relationship with no way out in sight while havng to recall the past that hes had to endure. Everyone hates these woman. Why the author would make such unreasonable characters, cultural difference??? It just doesn't translate well to a western audience. <<less

What really brings this story down is the badly done slapstick.

Normally, the slapstick "abusive" situation have a proper basis. For instance, it makes fun a girl getting angry for seeing a boy read p*rn in front of them. That anger is transformed into a hit for slapstick. Basically, exaggerating either an emotion people can relate to or an action people can relate to into violence.

But for this, there is no basis. There is nothing to relate to when the MC is treated badly. And as such, even though it is... more>> not the author's intent, it makes the characters and side people look bad. It's just too mean spirited to be viewed as comedy.

It has no basis. It's just done with no proper reasoning. It has nothing to exaggerate.

And even after hearing about the MC's tragic back story, nobody cares and just lets it go through. There is no difference. The MC has no freedom of choice (even for comedy) and it's done by people he is not close with.

Like, if it was his brother or parent of really close friend/girlfriend that forced him, that would be one thing... but near random strangers??? Like... wtf???

________________

If it were not for the badly done slapstick, this series would actually be funny and interesting.

In fact, if the girl that treats the MC bad was instead his wife that was tired of the MC's potato obsession and laziness, then her nagging and rage would make sense.

And for her ret*rded brother, if his troubling the MC was done more secretly instead rather than the clear bullying, then the girl getting mad at the MC would also make more sense and be funnier (cause then it would be her seeing the MC bully her mentally ret*rded brother) and it'd be a comic misunderstanding.

But those 2 simple changes could make all the difference. Because then, there would be a basis to follow the slapstick exaggerations towards the situation.

But... the author does not do that. There is no basis and it's just really bad and mean spirited. <<less

Well, this one was somewhat unusual. The MC is a total zealot of potatoes, believing in the potato god and having potato wives, renaming himself potato and wanting to bury others that annoy him to become nutrients to potatoes... Yeah, really. Some pretty sad sh*t going on at around chapter 3 or 4, but it just lasts a chapter or so and then he goes back to his cheerful personality. He's extremely delusional, really, loli potatoes? he's totally dwelling on how that works, yeah... hmm... He also bashed a S... more>> ranked hero half to death with a potato because he stepped on his potatoes and only spared his life because he got money to get more potato sprouts... Well, I also get the charm of potatoes, but dude, there's a limit. I almost choked when he stated that he ate one of his 548 (I think?) potato wives, and it was delicious, what the hell.

So yeah, pretty golden gag comedy, a little sad at one chapter but you can jump over it if you dislike that stuff, even I got my eyes watery, and I hardly ever feel anything like that, touched my heartstrings for some reason. The only major complaint I have is the flat extra characters. They only have a few personality traits and goes full blast on them like there's no tomorrow. The super violent ultimate brocon woman, the ultimate obnoxious creepy brother with a shitty personality and a bad laugh and the super lecherous&mischievous female... yeah, the sister and brother pair totally creeped me out beyond belief, and no, not any s*xual scenes, just excessively obsessed to the point of drooling when praising her brother and almost killing the MC when he wanted to bury (really just chased) the little brother after he threw freaking rocks right into the mc's head twice in a row... Excessive violence for no real reason is not funny at all, I wish this author would understand that and stop trying to use cheap comedy where someone is getting hurt when not really doing anything wrong for no good reason. They brother&sister combo is the tr*sh of humanity with their violence, yet they have the gall to look down at the MC who just innocently loves his potatoes as tr*sh... yeah, it doesn't sit right with me and just pissed me off instead of making me laugh. Except for that everything was perfect though.

So, praise the potatoes and try this novel out, it's just 10 chapters translated thus far anyway, so it'll just take at most a hour of slow reading. <<less

This is my first review on this site, which is weird since I neither love nor hate this novel, but it has a certain charm that compelled me to do it.

I like and dislike this novel. You see, the premise is pretty interesting and the protagonist, Fa'Mu, is pretty charming despite being crazy (like, disturbed crazy, most certainly due to the trauma from the past). I normally don't like that type of crazy character obsessed with something (in this case: potatoes) to the point of making his life orbit around... more>> said thing, but he's alright. It may be because, even though he's crazy, he has vestiges of clarity, a sort of self-awareness of the fact that he's weird in the eyes of people.

Also, the story looks like it could head in a good direction provided the author takes advantage of this awareness and decides to develop Fa'Mu's character.

What I can't stand, though, are the side characters; or more like, two characters in particualr: that bit*h brocon, Di Yana, and her autistic little brother, Wu De. They are some of the most insufferable side characters (that are not supposed to be antagonists) I've ever had the displeasure to read about.

Spoiler

See, Wu De is an annoying little sh*t that has thrown stones at Fa Mu for the past 6 years. In the diegetic present (which means the event we're currently reading about), with him being already 16 years old, he keeps stoning Fa Mu, which (reasonably) makes him snap and chase him around the village, to which he calls for his dear sister to help, to which she comes to his aid and beats the sh*t out of Fa Mu without listening to any circumstances. All the while the little sh*t laughs creepily at him in the back (seriously, who the f*ck laughs "jie jie jie"?).

And here comes Di Yana, the biggest bit*h in the story. You see, she is the "village treasure", the most beautiful girl that gets suitors even from places outside the village. Standard fare for what you'd consider a "heroine", and she's abusive towards Fa Mu; pretty typical stuff (for as long as tsunderes have existed, at least).

The biggest problem with this matter is not only the fact that she's not Fa Mu's love interest, childhood friend, simply friend or even a f*cking acquaintance, but that she's basically a stranger to him. She's literally a girl whom he knows because everybody in the village does. She's nobody to him (he even said that they'd only spoken directly THREE TIMES in his life). Yet the who*e abuses him like he owes her something just because he didn't write the conscription papers she handed to him seriously. Not to mention the very fact that not only is she not friendly to him, she was one of the kids that stoned him for YEARS and only stopped a few days ago of this whole paper thing happening. Yeah, she must be a sweetheart.

Also, did I mention that she's a through and through brocon (the creepy kind that drools and trembles upon the Visage of her brother doing the slightest thing worth of praise (reciting a dumb spell correctly or running more than others) AND that she viciously, and I mean VICIOUSLY (and I'm not using this word lightly here) beats Fa Mu at the slightest sign that he'll disparage her precious little brother?

Yeah, that thing, too. She's not just abusive, but she REALLY puts all violent tsunderes to shame with how beastly she can be.

And those two aren't the only problem. There's this S-Rank party of adventurers that all have their quirks and, admittedly, some charm to them, which are possibly the only people that treat Fa Mu like a human being.

To be honest, I like them all, or, well, liked them all until chapter 25 and 25, when cowboy blonde decided to be a piece of sh*t miser.

Still, the rest are aight, but even the girl that treats him the best because she understands what he's gone through in his tragic past, Rei, f*cks him up by creating situations in which he's abused by the whore, Di Yana, and I don't like that.

Oh, that's another thing. This abuse happens from part of Di Yana even after finding out that he was put in a 1x1x1 box for an undefined amount of time in his childhood to make a sort of "magic item" commodity out of him. I mean, at least it's good they're not pitying him, but it's CLEAR AS f*ckING DAY that he's a deeply disturbed person with deep, real psychological issues, as opposed to the crazy villager image he had before.

Yet they still treat him like tr*sh. They literally treat him like he's the biggest scum on earth who wrongs everyone all the time, even when he just wants to be left alone.

[collapse]

Well, that's the thing that infuriates me, and it would not normally be enough to warrant a feeling of dislike from this novel per se, but the issue I have with all this is the fact that it's played for laughs. And don't get me wrong, I know misfortune is Slapstick comedy's bread and butter, but the situation, especially Fa Mu's past, is to real to take it all as a joke. He needs help and all he gets is abuse, literally. The violence he's subjected to is NOT funny because it's unwarranted AF most of the time. He just wants to be left alone, yet he's dragged into sh*t he doesn't want anything to do with against his will, and gets kicked, punched, choked, hair pulled out, stepped on and verbally abused every time he doesn't want to comply and follow suit. They literally abuse him because he doesn't do what they want him to do. It's f*cking terrible.

The saving graces of this novel and the biggest reasons I kept reading till I caught up (this deserves to be kept translating) are Fa Mu's musings, which are genuinely funny most of the time, the 3 S-rank adventurers other than cowboy trap, and the fact that the story seemed like it was on the right track. It was getting genuinely interesting with the promise of growth and development for Fa Mu.

I would've rated 4 or even 5 stars if it headed in the direction I was expecting, but alas, we will never know lest somebody picks it up again.

Sorry for the rant. I tend to get emotional with stuff. <<less

What the hell did I just read? Too bad it's a dead translation, the basic premise is pretty interesting and I want to read more. Seems like deep down the MC knows he's not right in the head as well. And god knows he has good reason why he is the way he is.

But like the other reviews mention, damn are the women evil. Even after they know his terrible past they still beat the crap out of him ruthlessly or set him up for another beating for little to... more>> no reason. I get that it's mostly for comedic effect, but it's a CONSTANT theme through every chapter to the point that I agree with the MC and think they must be tsun for him.
