It was all started when I got interested in angst stories and asked for bl angst novel recommendations on a discord server.

Before I start, I want to say thank you to the translator, Zoola (1-8) and Luxiufer (9-28).

In the beginning, this story is sweet and full of fluff. A gentle blind concubine, a cute cat, a cute servant, ML's adorable Lil bro, and ML. Of course, it was only at the beginning.

About MC, I really love him. I hoped that he will be protected but the fkin ML AND HIS... more>> MOTHER RUINS EVERYTHING.

*cough* sorry for swearing.

A big spoiler about this story:

Spoiler

The tragedy started when MC got drunk in ML's place and they papapaed. ML did it to MC without holding back and MC got bruised. I should've expected this cuz the tag (Male Yandere) and bec this is angst but still...

The next day: To 'protect' ML, ML's mother asked the great general (if I'm not wrong, he's ML's Lil bro's teacher) to send MC to a place far from ML. I forgot how long MC lived there but ofc ML bought him back.

THE THING I DIDN'T EXPECT IS THAT ML THOUGHT MC CHEATED ON HIM WITH GENERAL.

Did ML see it with his own eyes? No.

Did ML have any proof? No.

Seriously, I WONDER IF HE'S REALLY A YOUNG EMPEROR, HE'S JUST TOO s*upid.

ML also sent MC to prison.

P-R-I-S-O-N!!!!!!!!!

HE OBVIOUSLY KNEW THAT MC HAS A WEAK BODY BUT THAT ML STILL SENT HIM TO PRISON!!!

To gain favor from ML, some mobs splashed MC with cold water. After knowing this, ML called the imperial doctor but the doctor can't heal him, so the MC asked Jue Yu. Jue Yu is the owner of the place MC stayed in, is a talented doctor, and just like that MC got better.

A scene I copied from the translarion:

When Jue Yu hurriedly came to the serving quarter, the Blind Concubine had already fallen asleep. His sleep was not comfortable. He was sleeping lightly.

"Mu Yan's body is already so broken. At this rate, I was afraid that he wouldn't hold up until he's thirty-five. If he doesn't take good care of himself like this, even if the greatest doctor, Hua Tuo, was still alive, he would also feel quite helpless for this situation."

The Emperor retorted: "I also don't want him to be like this, however with his current temper, sometimes, he truly asks me to lose my temper to the point that I would kill him if I could."

Just like that, I came up with a conclusion. ML is really shitty, cold hearted disgusting.

Let's continue :)

ML's Lil bro came to visit MC with food from ML's mother. ML's Lil bro wanted to give MC the food but MC's cat ate it and died. Reading this scene, my patience has met its limits.

If you read the story, you will know how sad MC bec about the death of his cat.

I'll skip to the mystery of why MC is blind.

ML asked Ju Yue to found out why MC is blind, Ju Yue succeeded.

It's actually because of ML and his mother!!

Even mc's servant was someone that ML's mother assigned to watch MC, but fortunately, the servant is sincere to MC.

It's amazing how MC could tolerate ML. There are some things that I want to spoil but I don't want to ruin the fun.

The only thing I hated in this story is that ML's mother didn't get her retribution.

[collapse]

Anyways, besides ML and his mother, everything about this story is great. I like the descriptions in this story.

I dunno why my review appeared as 3 stars, sorry. <<less

Meh tragedy, wasn’t all that sad though.

I only wished that the situation wasn’t all that severe but it was treated as so.

MC was the typical pure, fragile, and weak type. He wasn’t ignorant and naive because

he knew about the evils of monarchy and power...

This started out as a seemingly romantic story about a blind concubine and the emperor but in the end, it shows that even love cannot forgive the deeds one has committed. "A precious and valuable thing, once it was smashed and broken, it couldn't be repaired nor mended." It made me tear up but I understood the choice he made and I am glad that they have the remaining peace they initially wanted. Definitely a must read.

This is a short and heartbreaking novel that is absolutely worth reading.

The MC is actually incredibly intelligent and rational, he's a genuinely good person who's written remarkably well. He's not weak or helpless, even though he's blind. He's one of the most likable MCs I've found.

The ML is not the villain the other reviews make him out to be, he's just an emperor who has to do things to protect himself. He's not sadistic or cruel, he's literally the emperor so of course he's selfish and arrogant, but not unreasonably... more>> so. He's not exactly likable but he's not the worst.

There's so many regrets in this novel. It's not satisfying but it is beautiful. <<less

Prologue

I was pleasantly surprised to come across this novel again after so many years! I had long forgotten about this novel, as at the time it was barely translated for a long period of time.

Thankfully I came across this novel again & was able to find it, with all the chapters available & translated fully.

... more>> One phrase sprung to mind as I was reading this novel:

"Maybe one day you'll understand that hearts don't intend to hurt others hearts"

To me, this phrase encapsulates this novel. It does have angst to an extent, but it is used appropriately.

My current thoughts on this novel:

- Short, precise and to the point. The author didn’t spend endless amounts of time on info dumping nonsense.

- The story flows well, and I do happen to like the dynamic between the ML & MC. It’s a nice change in pace compared to other BL novels. The ML isn’t crazily overbearing. The MC isn’t overly acting pitiful and dumb.

- The MC was endearing and I felt his loss of sight wasn’t in the slightest, diminished or trivialised by the author. It felt realistic & was treated with respect in the way the author had charactised the MC & his disability.

- The side characters were fleshed out (surprisingly!) considering the length of this novel. It’s really quiet a short read.

- The story was poetic, I thought personally and the conclusion poignant and touching.

- Added bonus: This novel did not drive me mad with incessant s*upidity, annoyingly overused tropes & the romance felt impactful and nice, even if it was predictable.

Now onto the things that I felt could have been addressed more:

- The Empress Dowager’s role in this story is quite significant to the overall trajectory of the novel. She slipped into the plot & almost just as quickly left it? Maybe a couple more chapters exploring her in the plot, would have added more depth to the overall jist of the story and other subsequent events.

- I also felt that perhaps it should have been made clearer to readers why acting against the Empress Dowager was never really touched upon. If you are a reader that is unfamiliar with the Imperial Family of China (Historically Accurate) or have not watched Period Chinese Dramas, this may not be clear as to why passages had not been written about this.

Let me be brief, I’m assuming the author only thought about Chinese readers (in which this would have been common knowledge) & not international people ever reading this, so it didn’t make sense for them to include it.

  • Empress Dowagers hold great power. Obviously she is an ‘Empress Dowager’ because she was the previous reigning monarchs wife, The Empress, hence the title.
  • Historically, Empress Dowagers “ruled behind the curtain”, exerting power & authority greater than that of an Emperor.
  • Not to say that the Emperor in this story is “weak” or every Emperor was useless, but realistically speaking, it is incredibly difficult & almost near impossible to go against/accuse them of remotely anything! If you want to learn more about the dynamics of this, I advise you look up the story of Empress Dowager Cixi... She is a very good example of what happens when you question hierarchy.
- Lastly, I wish we could have just had a bit more chapters or side stories on the side characters after the events of the MC nearing the end of the novel, like the MC's loyal servant. 😭

---

Notes on translation: The translation was fine, no complaints really.

---

Notes on rating: I’m rating a 5/5 as I’m biased. This have me bittersweet memories. 4 for the plot & cast of characters, and the respect given to an MC with a disability + the extra 1 for the amazing translation.

---

If you've made it this far, I'd recommend reading this. It's a short, quick read. I don't have much negative things to say tbh. It's a a lone flower in a genre dominated by low quality writing & stories. <<less

Wow, this was... actually good? I came here expecting a wholesome relationship with a romeo-and-juliet ending but it had neither.

This is not it a tragedy. People are exaggerating it as usual.

The first third will seem like your basic cutesy lovey dovey story. The MC's character is very basic; he is s a good boi, he always puts other people before him and he only dotes on his child servant and his cat.

The emperor's character is also simple; he is a selfish ass, who despite being obsessed with his concubine, never... more>> takes the time to make sure he feels alright
Spoiler

hence the chaotic love scene which is so uncomfortable that by this time you already know what kind of person he is

[collapse]
and never listens to MC's actual wishes if they clash with his world view.

The relationship is f*cked up, MC doesn't love him, you know MC doesn't love him, the servants know MC doesn't love him, everyone and their mom knows MC doesn't love him, only the manchild that is the emperor doesn't want to accept this.

After the first half the story becomes more nuanced, there are some plot twists, I particularly liked a character that is so smart and a tiny bit evil that he can play everyone to get what he wants, even the emperor. And man, even he bas higher morals and cares more about MC's wellbeing that the ML.

I also have a few nitpicks on the story but considering it's just a novella and the authors seem to have only written this one, i'll let them slide
Spoiler

except for the concubine not telling the emperor that the general was trying to save him instead of just kidnapping him, I understand this is ancient china and ppl don't speak up but what the f*ck

[collapse]

I also enjoyed the ending, it sums up both of their personalities pretty well and is not a standard uwu fairy tale end.
Spoiler

Living in eternal loneliness is pretty poetic indeed. I would have also liked if he still had his servant as they shared a special bond. But on the other hand, that child also deserved to shine, to know the world and grow up without being confined. And maybe MC will find a new cat. Maybe his servant will reunite with him oneday. MC is still living in the palace but in order to keep his illusion, they should allow him to go outside, shopping, wandering etc. And I doubt the emperor will keep him as a trophy forever. Hopefully they are fated to meet again. And if not, that's life for ya. At least they aren't dead.

[collapse]

So in the end, that's a worthy read to keep you entertained for a few days. <<less

Mu Yan... you deserved so much happiness.

Spoiler

The ending made me so sad for him. And though the emperor is in many ways a piece of SHIZZLES, I felt kinda bad for him too.

The side characters gave me life, and I'm so sad that Mu Yan ended up with all the ones he loved being apart from him... there was no one left to call his name, and spend quiet days with anymore.

That guy should've just let him go to Pear Mountain with the others... why so selfish?

My my... what can I say... for a historical/imperial themed novel this was quite a refreshing read, largely due to its length. Who would have thought one could accomplish a satisfying story in 28 chapters? Anyway, this was a very poignant story and was not dragged out by a lot of conflict. I guess my only question was

why did the author not include something about the reaction of the MC's family when it was described that the MC was actually doted on and held in the center of his family's palm. It was never explained how his family accepted the news of his "death". I guess this novel goes to show that those in power can just sweep everything under the rug and no one is going to question them and no violent reaction from the aggrieved party regardless if they were family who treated their son preciously.

Nevertheless, this novel for me was a small treasure and worth a read. <<less

I have been debating over this novel for a long time. It's quite an emotional journey and despite it being tagged as tragedy, it's more a bitersweet ending that worked just fine for me.

Some things are meant to be forgiven. Some things are meant to be swept under the rug. But sometimes, some things can never be forgotten and there will always be someone paying the price.

This was a devastating short story but with a satisfying ending. At least for me.

OVERALL:

✭ Characters: 4 - Well done, although I loved Blind Concubine and how much his character was explored through this, while Emperor... wasn't not that much.

✭ Side characters: 3 - not bad. You get attached to his servant and his cat.

✭ Story: 5 - easy to follow, very short. First person view

✭ emotional impact: 5 - do you want to cry? Sure? Go ahead

✭ Humor: / - some cute scenes but no real humor

This novel was not the tragedy I was expecting. In fact, I don't think I was so much sad after reading this but angry.

I absolutely hated the Emperor from beginning to end. The guy had zero redeeming qualities, and I was hoping that he'd die a gruesome death. But, nope. He gets (almost) everything he wants in this, while the protagonist loses everything. How is that fair?

Spoiler

Throughout this story, it was really clear to me that the Emperor's love for the Blind Concubine wasn't really true love; it was the love of a child for his possessions. And that's really how the Emperor treated the Blind Concubine throughout the story: as a possession. He never gives a single sh*t about the Blind Concubine's feelings until it started affecting his health, and only then does he even agree to make the barest compromise. Not even setting him free, but putting him into a (n even more invisible) cage to look at from afar!

I know a lot of other reviewers found this tragic for the Emperor because boohoo he can never be together with the one he loves. But I don't give a shit!! The Emperor deserves to be lonely forever!! He has literally all the power in this relationship and the concubine has none, subject entirely to the Emperor's whims. If the Emperor truly loved him, he would let him go!! And the fact that it ends with the Emperor watching him from afar without his knowledge... ugh, it just gives me creepy stalker vibes.

[collapse]

The only saving grace of this story is that I never got the sense that the author was romanticizing anything of what the Emperor was doing. (Although the final end notes were... questionable.) It definitely felt like an "inevitable tragedy" and not because of fate or whatever but because the Emperor is a jackass. So, 3.5/5, I guess, for actually knowing the Emperor is abusive and keeping the two apart, unlike a lot of other BL WNs.

TLDR; the real tragedy in this is how the Emperor is still alive at the end. Not a bad story by any means, but a frustrating one. <<less

As you might notice I'm pretty much almost finished with this novel, I won't be reading the last two chapters, because I rage quit this novel.

The novel is written in an almost poetic way (though not overly so), the translation is very smooth to read and the twist and turns of this novel are interesting as well as unforeseeable. So with all this one might ask why I rage quit reading it. It all came down to the ending. When all was revealed, secrets fully uncovered and the final showdown... more>> was to take place, the exact opposite of what I wanted happened. Now I know not every ending of a novel will be to my liking, but this time it has little to do with taste, it's rather about the characters themselves. The character development wasn't big, but you got really invested into their personalities during the novel and this just increased my disappointment in the end.

Instead of owning up to his horrendous deeds
Spoiler

(ie. Making the MC lose his f*cking sight for all his life even though he was so young and had so much beauty to see ahead of him or his irrational actions due to anger bringing the MC near the brink of death),

[collapse]
the ML just expected the MC to still smile at him and be happy. How do you f*cking expect him to still show you a smile after causing him so much grief!?!

Spoiler

(he lost not only his sight, but also his family might I add) ?!?

[collapse]

WTF, I can't believe how the ML acts toward the MC in the end. He didn't even apologize properly, like at all.
Spoiler

He didn't confront the Empress Dowager about the matter of almost killing him (the second time) and he even gets angry at the MC for 'not being happy about seeing him' frequently.

[collapse]

How is that a happy ending? The MC, although he could've made his life easier by talking about what happened to him in the beginning, doesn't deserve a bastard like the ML. The ML hasn't felt enough regret about what he did to the MC at all, so I honestly don't see it as a happy ending if they still get together after that
Spoiler

(and in such a short amount of time too!). Not to mention, the ML gets pretty psycho at the end, although that isn't the worst thing in my opinion.

[collapse]
Yet they still did, so f*ck this, I'm so disappointed.

To be fair, in the end, this is just a novel and it doesn't really matter. In the rage of the moment, I'd definitely give this novel a one-star rating, but that'd be unfair to the rest of the novel. Because although the novel wasn't that good or interesting either, considering its shortness it was a decent read with an unexpected twist to it. And while reading this you kinda get into it very fast so that's a plus. Some of the development and characters are awkward in the setting and they come in a bit fast, but it's nothing really bad. All in all, it was a good read to waste some time. <<less

Even though the author wrote this to break our hearts. I'll still give it a 5. (T_T)

Spoiler

I read this knowing its a tragedy tag but I didn't know that the entire mood I'll get from the story is sadness.

The MC life was so tragic he needed to let go of the people he loves so they'll be safe even if in the end he'll be alone. The only happiness I felt was when he's still staying in the cold palace, when everything was still simple.

I'll cling to the first chapter that gave us a glimpse to a far away future where MC and ML is talking to each other.

The story is good, but their personalities are rather... shallow.

Spoiler

I liked the first part of the story until the... s*x scene. I know the MC used that to get closer to the ML, but there are other ways to get closer than doing... that. It was a bit uncomfortable to read.

And the ending was a bit rushed. Like the cat dying so suddenly to add to the MC's misery, sending Xiao Bao far away—when he could've been the MC's personal attendant? —And the empress's involvement felt like a plot device.

It's ridiculous how the ML quickly fell in love with the MC, even abandoning his duties to visit. Everyday. How did the other concubines not hear about this? They could have been other antagonists, but only the empress and the Little Prince interfered.

And the side characters, Jue Yu and Qi Sheng, their romance was like random inserts from nowhere. It's like the author added it because they wanted to. I'm not meaning to offend.

The story is cute with the MC, his cat, Xiao Bei and the Little Prince. Until the ML ruined it. Anyway, the epilogue is alright, although I feel that the MC deserved better. <<less

I will give 4.1

That is because this is written extremely well and the MC is one that is easily lovable. From the first 9 chapters his personality is electric and I cared and loved him so much.

I would give this a much higher score but it's just rushed. It's not really a tragedy in my eyes, just like an open ending (what I will believe).

... more>> There are a lot of major dead ends which haven't been written about and stuff that needs more explanation.

Overall I don't know if I would recommend this because I just fell in love with this character that has been left in limbo. Anyways I'm glad I read it, the angst was good.

Btw the ending left me wondering so I came up with my own events that happens after.

Warning I got carried away so it's long 🤡

Spoiler

I think MC actually loved ML and doesn't blame him but closed of his heart after ch13 because he was too scared to loose it. He knew already that things don't last so I think he wanted to get it over with and lessen the pain of goodbyes.

Here's what happens after (in my head, cont from last chapter)

It had only been one year and in Wen Mu Yans mind he has reached his final state, no changes no uncertainties anymore, nothing to loose or worry about, all defeated with life. But the emperor still loved him dearly, watching him from a distance, happy that his body is recovering. In his mind the emperor knew he will start to make him happy again, he just needed time for him to heal.

The emperor starts to bring in some cats to keep him company, as they just so happen to enter the villa, more servants who are friendly join the court as they needed employment, and he accepts them. The lonely solitary life Wen Mu Yan lived for a year slowly begins to change again.

During this year the emperor secretly punishes the lady dowager, firing all her staff and placing her under house arrest. He made sure no one can hurt him again, threatening her eyes if she did anything again to Mu Yan or hus brother. The emperor fixes up his government and military, re evaluating his men's loyalty and enstilling better dissipline to the rules.

In the villa

Rui Ze will sometimes come visit him, Wen Mu Yan sometimes hears his voice start to break and he could tell by their parting hugs he is getting taller. Rarely the emperor will accompany the prince on his visits, announcing himself but keeping a distance, although he was actually there every day. Weekend long visits were not uncommon during celebrations, and they will in the summer stay for a week to train.

Later on Wen Mu Yan visits the lotus camp as he misses Xiao Bao. They reunite and he lowly regains his previous joy in life, he no longer thinks about those desperate times as he wants to be happy and live his life.

Wen Mu Yan and the emperor eventually get talking again, sipping tea and sharing whatever delicacies he brought from the market with the emperor. One day just in conversation he says he misses the livelihood of the palace and that this place is too quiet.

At this time the Dowager dies. Older Xiao Bao will move back because he misses Mu Yan (sneaked on carriage) . He gains his confidence to love the emperor again, moved by his patients and dedication (he figured out the emperor was watching him through their chats and his slip ups).

Through the little gestures and visits he finally realises the emperor's feeling are true. And after another year he figures out that he is still in the palace, but again he's not concerned with this anymore as he knows from experience he can leave whenever he wants (ie unrealistic of him to live away, with no job/backing anyways).

He moves back into the servents house in the palace with xiao bao and the now many cats. He wants to be there for the little prince as he grows up. Xiao bao and the Rui Ze are older now and they have sworn to never leave his side. Maybe because they are older and stronger now he believes them, no longer feeling like a burden.

At some point the emperor announces is brother as the next heir, and he is allowed to marry whoever he wants.

They get married, Then they will live happily ever after, just like the beginning 🥹.
