A 34-year-old NEET otaku, chased out from his house by his family, found that his life is reaching a dead end. He then recalled that his life could actually have been much better if he had made better choices in the past.

Just when he was at the point of regret, he saw a truck moving at fast speed, and three high schoolers in its path. Mustering all the strength he had, he tried to save them and ended getting run over by the truck, quickly ending his life.

The next time he opened his eyes, he is reincarnated to a world of sword and magic as Rudeus Greyrat. Born to a new world, a new life, Rudeus decided that, “This time, I’ll really live my life to the fullest with no regret!” Thus starts the journey of a man yearning to restart his life.

Honestly speaking - this novel is a crap. Of course it being crap does not mean you cannot enjoy it, I did read the whole thing and liked it to an extent. But yeah - one the contrary to what most people here are writing this isn't good at all. The story is generic from the beggining until the end, the supposed plot twists are s*upid and predictable, most of the cast is as bland as it could be. MC's character development is great... Or that's what I would like... more>> to say, if it did exist at all. But alas, it doesn't. I still can't comprehend why I somehow managed to enjoy reading that. Give it a try but do keep it in your mind that only first few volumes are actually decent. It quickly devolves into badly written excuse of a story. <<less

You know what, it's not my cup of tea. I can see how this could appeal to some readers who are very fond of harem novels or those new to the isekai genre; it was my first or second isekai so I ended up reading quite far despite some red flags for me (groping children with an adult's mind, even if you have a child's body, makes me want to vomit). Honestly, I don't care for any of the characters, my rating is purely based on the world building as... more>> I think the author does a very good job at that.

This next part is a very specific (semi) rant so skip if it's not a topic that interests you:

I want to say I didn't bother to finish as I felt there was nothing else that would interest me. While that's true, the biggest reason I didn't want to continue the novel is that I can't stand the way the author goes about making the harem in this novel. I'm already not a big fan of harems in general, but I don't particularly mind ones where we see all the characters' relationships as they grow with the MC. This kind, though, where female characters with "established" relationships with MC disappear just long enough for him to build up his harem then magically reappear absolutely irks me. The fact that the MC gets involved with these girls completely separate of each other has an undertone of monogamy so, when you put it all together, it screams cheating/misleading to me.

But, once again, I don't think it's a bad story. Just too long if you're not completely into everything in its genre descriptions. <<less

I wanted to stop reading I don't know how many times !

But that was only because I was totaly immersed in the story, so when he was being s*upid, I was under the impression that a close friend was doing s*upid things.

It's a fantastic story ! Really happy to have read it !

PS Non-native speaker, sorry for my English.

Ok, I meant 2 stars but whatever.

Oh, and the Tl;dr is a lot more useful than this rant, so skip it if you want a proper opinion

So the story starts of all good and dandy. The MC is doing cool stuff, and I had fun reading it. But that was until he starrted to work under someone (volume 15~ I think). He just started acting like a grunt, which was funny at first, then got boring, as do many other things. I still soldiered on, until I saw a chapter... more>> named "household collapse". So I thought "oh, another enemy noble being destroyed?" Nope. Turned out it was drama in his own house. Like, why author? Sure, realism helps a story, but drama? Wtf. So I stopped there. It did get proggesivly boring, so I didin't regret my desicion. The manga's amzing though. I'd reccomend the manga, not novel (so far).

Tl;dr: starts of nice, but gets old fast. Gets too "complicated" with the author trying out a thing or two, treating the WN like a draft (which it is :/). But the manga is a lot better in terms of art and pacing and other stuff. Read if you liked the beggining. If you don't like his. Later activities (like I didin't) then drop, cause you won't like the story and plot ahead. <<less

ok so I didn't mind the jerking off on his parents funeral, thing. Maybe they didn't get along. The thing that made me jump ship was when the mother was telling her story, and she noticed how pe*verted the baby was. Just disgusting! You cant hold back even with your own mother?! He sexually harassed his mother as a baby! F*cking in*est! If this is how he acts as a child, then whats stopping him from being a rapist?!

[collapse]

pe*verted minds have no appeal in western culture, I just dont understand what the appeal is in asian cultures. I can tolerate it to a certain extent, but when your supposed to be an innocent child and you are still pe*verted. Thats messed up.

This is insanely good compared to all the other novels I have read. It kept me interested till the end and I never got bored of it compared to most novels I read. It also doesnt have that many plot holes and the translation were of top quality.

I sincerely hope this one will get an anime, and will also try to support the author by buying the manga

I wanted to give this a 3.5, but it doesn't seem like that's possible. I'm leaning more towards a 4 than a 3.

First off, I'd like to say that everything that the negative reviewers are saying are true. It gets pretty over the top at times. The pe*vertedness does slow down the story a bit towards the middle, but the story itself at least has a plot. If you're not into that kinda thing, this isn't the story for you. He likes to talk about butts and thighs and b**bs... more>> and such every so often.

The characterization is good for the most part. The protagonist talks in a consistent and comfortable style (for those who can shrug off the pe*verted comments), coming off as laid back but not lazy. The character interactions are realistic enough to pass off as believable, except the harem members. Holy hell, they're annoying. With exception to one, they're at least not 2D.

However, all of them are pretty much the protagonist's yes-women when they're together. They're way too dependent on him.

I don't quite agree with the tag "Weak to Strong." The protagonist was reborn particularly gifted and higher spec in one aspec over the norm. While he does get stronger through the series, at no point can I say he's "weak." However, the overpoweredness of the protagonist is somewhat mitigated by his own cowardice as well as a certain weakness. He's paranoid of causing trouble and therefore kisses up to pretty much everyone and prostrates himself whenever he's wronged someone. The story starts off with him being shown easily picking off small fries here and there. As the story progresses, you learn that he has a rather fatal weakness that makes him incapable of direct confrontation. He has to then rely on allies and extensive prep work. It's a bit more refreshing as opposed to all the instances of Leeroy Jenkins that tends to happen in novels with this tag. Overall, the meticulousness of his actions make it more worthwhile to read than simply watching him show off.

Some other things to be aware of:

    • The story likes to make a lot of Japanese pop culture references in its entirety, which may be boggling to the readers.
    • Gore occasionally pops up.
    • The school arc, which is like 1/6th of the story, is REALLY slow. Really wanted to skip past it.
    • The story's humor is a hit and miss. You either like none of it or most of it.

Mushoku Tensei is a wonderfully done deconstruction of the isekai genre, of which it was a figurehead of.

There's probably a few nitpicks I could make with the series, but those are vastly outweighed by the sheer consistent quality of the novels. The novels never fail to stop developing the main character, from the beginning of the first chapter to the last sentence of the epilogue, it's all been about the growth of Rudeus.

Now, some people probably just like power fantasies, so I admit this definitely not everyone's cup of tea,... more>> as it fuels its readers with its conflicts and character relations.

I'd recommend it to someone who has just started reading novels, but not to a completely new reader, as the length and tropes may not be suitable for a complete greenhorn. <<less

Let me start off by saying Mushoku Tensei is "Absolutely" not for everyone. There are some subjects that the novel has in it that would make many people uncomfortable on a basic level. Things like the MC being a NEET/Loser may be expected for many LNs. However the MC being a 30 y/o NEET/Loser can be an absolute turnoff when considering that he was reborn as a child in the new world. This can be a problem because the love interest.

Spoiler

His love interest are the roughly the same age as his new body which I'm sure you can understand why this can be a problem for many people (Large mental age difference (Loli) and Various other experiences).

[collapse]

There are other parts to the novel that people may dislike, but I find "that" to be the most imposing. Anyway, with that out of the way I'd like to say I thoroughly enjoyed Mushoku Tensei.

The MC while being NEET in his original world, immediately did a 180 and attempted to become the best he could be once reincarnated. This was pleasing to see as you can see the MC grow quickly at the beginning of the story. MC's levels of OPness is seen, but he isn't the only one that is considered strong. There are moments in the story where his powers shine, however there are moments in the story that do show how powerless he is (though it's quite rare).

The world, side characters, and story are pretty well drawn out and expressed. I would recommend the novel for sure. <<less

Rating: 3-3.5 stars, Translation: 5/5

(My reviews may sound negative, but I often list reasons why I didn't give 5 stars.)

[[5 star = almost all readers may enjoy. 4 star = large majority of readers may enjoy. 3 star = 50/50 of readers may enjoy. 2 star = a niche audience may enjoy. 1 star = maybe portion of niche audience may enjoy.]]

[[5/5 = Infrequent minor errors. 4/5 = Frequent minor errors or infrequent major errors, no difficulty to read. 3/5 = Frequent major errors, some difficulty to read.... more>> 2/5 = Difficult to read. 1/5 = Unreadable.]]

A 34-year-old hikikomori was kicked out of his family home by his siblings, after MC didn't go to his parents' funeral. He appears to have regrets as he wanders around homeless, then dies after trying to save some pedestrians from a car accident. He wakes up reborn as the child of a minor noble couple in a fantasy world, with his memories and intellect intact at birth. He decides to make the most of his new life and be a new person.

Story contains reincarnated MC, no special abilities for MC other than head start on education and training from an early age, age progression from birth to adulthood, slice of life, first person POV, magic medieval fantasy world, no RPG or game-like system but there are magic and sword skills and ranks, humanoid races, monsters/beasts, various countries/factions, harem, ecchi, loli, adventurers, rare dungeons, moderate amount of small group combat, rare large scale combat, high school life phase.

Content. It's not bad, but also not very exciting. Most of it is slice of life, until the late volumes when there is more serious challenges and antagonists. In the early arcs, MC doesn't have any big goals other than just living a new life. The next several arcs have soft goals like fixing some issues or helping friends/family, and then the later arcs have more serious goals like fighting serious enemies. So I think it starts of really slow and gets more serious later on.

Storytelling. It's almost entirely first person POV, and a huge portion of text is in the form of internal thinking/monologue. I think that might make some readers bored. The humor kind of gets old, as most of it relates to perversion. As mentioned above, the pace is very slow at first, but then speeds up. The final 3-4 volumes have a lot of events crammed into them, compared to the start; might feel rushed.

Characters. MC is not OP, but since he has the mind of an adult and trains from age 3, his magic power and skill are among the top in the new world. He does have some progression, but pretty much slows down, as well as his companions' progression, about midway through the series. Characters do have some personality and have their roles. One issue I have is that that too many characters have conflicts of interests that get worked into the story near the end, feels overused.

The loli. MC claims he's not into loli, but his actions and thoughts suggest otherwise. In the first several volumes, he jokes about mol*sting or having s*x with children, and even briefly gropes girls who are aged 6, 10, and 12. I think most readers would be disturbed, even though MC has the body of a child. However, because it doesn't go any further, and the loli stuff drops off when he reaches high school age, it was somewhat tolerable.

Overall, it's a fair reincarnation story. I thought it gets better after the first several volumes, but the initial slow pace and too much narration/monologue could make some readers lose interest. It's one of the few completed series I've seen so far, and does give a reasonable conclusion. The pe*ophilia was limited to the beginning, so it may be tolerable, but probably would bother some readers. I initially gave this a 2.5-3 stars, but because the story

got better and the loli content tapered off, I raised it to 3-3.5 stars.

Other: This is the WN, which is completed with 24 volumes, and some side stories/spin off chapters. There is a LN, which I believe either isn't complete, or hasn't been completely translated. I heard that it's not much different from the WN, except for additional side stories. <<less

I'm strongly recommended this WN for anyone who want quick battle scenes, an realistic MC (A Real Human Being has Thoughts as a Real Human Being), nice story telling, character story building and of course a happy ending. I'm hooked to this WN and really a huge fan of it, re-read a few times. To start off, our MC is really a nasty-disgusting NEET (I really means it - he's a dead case), died in an accident while trying to help others and got reincarnated into a world of sword... more>> and magic as a baby - a fresh restart of his life - so not to waste this opportunity he's swore to live a fulfilling life (this is the main point).

The story building, it's nice since our author concentrated on character building steadily but not slowly (from when he's a baby growing up into a fine man) and here is the problem - because our main protagonist is not a genius just a normal average man we find everywhere, he has lust and earthly desire toward things like every NORMAL HUMAN, he's not a Saint so don't judge him otherwise go read something else (I don't recommend this - bear with it and see for yourself), only read and enjoy and think what HE IS THINKING - don't THINK "THIS SHOULD BE THIS OR THIS SHOULD BE THAT AND YOU SHOULD DO THIS" - this is a world people die in a blink of an eye and he has to decide what to do carefully caused he don't want to die a second time. We can see a lot of perspective from each characters and their inner thought, very thoroughly and emotional, which is related to the story and has a latter connection to each and every action/twist.

The system of ranking and magic spell is nicely done, not too much detail and so as to lack information, the novel provide enough information for you to enjoy, not to brainwashing you. Unfortunately the adventuring part of our protagonist is short.

The combat is quick, but deadly, usually the combat scenes is just a chapter or so and it won't bored you, actually I'm keen to this kind of combat description, the spell is for you to imagine as the lines goes on.

The sweetness of this WN might made you vomit sugar, but humiliation might made it bitter, no NTR of course but there are in*est - I don't mind both of them though.

Spoiler

My spoiler is that he's has 3 wives, all of them have met him pretty soon, you can guest right? And he has 6 children - each of his wives gave birth to 2, 4 girls and 2 boys. He has friends from upper echelon and has influence to the world as individual. Rank 7 in the The Seven Great World Power. Has Mana Pool rival Laplace. The 2nd Strongest feared to lose him.

Recommended Read.

Pros:
1) It's complete.
2) MC isn't a blatantly OP riajuu. He's powerful but not s*upidly powerful.
3) Plausible magic system. MC isn't some s*upidly powerful master of all. He can't even use Touki ("fighting spirit"). But he can do most attack magics (Earth/Water focused) yet is limited in other areas which allows side characters to shine. Unfortunately the author doesn't do nearly as much with this as he should/could.)

Cons:
1) Forced Harem.
Spoiler

Basically wife of the year will spend a short time together and fall completely in love with the MC then separate due to [insert plot event here] then spend a few years pining for the MC where they'll marry after they reunite when MC shags them due to depression.

[collapse]

2) Overly used relationship device. Virtually everyone falls into the same pattern where it takes a literal shag to get them out of a slump. Like wtf, is this the only way the author can depict depression?

Spoiler

Paul needs one, MC needs several, even Cliff (although Elize jumped him first).

Surprisingly the only one that doesn't need a shag is Zanoba & MC's sisters (guess author didn't want to enter in*est territory). But then again he's not entirely sane and he's good to go if he gets his hands on some dolls.

[collapse]

3) Power level of MC get restricted in the DUMBEST WAY POSSIBLE.

Spoiler

MC gets power limited via IDIOT BALL of all things. MC becomes a competent mage at the age of 7 showing very logical mastery of his magic (doing what most people with common sense would do in a magic world). Author realizes that if this keeps up, he'd be too powerful to work with so MC purposefully becomes a useless potato leading to numerous obvious "QQ I lost muh X/Y/Z because I'm not strong enough, " situations.

It gets ridiculous to the point where MC's future self has to warn him to not be so moronic. (Especially since he's facing a "god".)

Mushoku Tensei is a awesome book for people who are into Action/Drama, the story is pretty good and the characters are well developed. Its a story of reincarnation and redeeming oneself. The MC is kind of OP but levels up slowly and in an organised manner. The antagonists are pretty good except the God. The heroines are very unique and interesting. Now on to the problems, its way to realistic for a light novel. Normally the novels have their own common sense rather that the common sense of our world,... more>> but Mushoku Tensei has our common sense and makes us think that this is really happening rather that thinking this is an artificial world. It might be a hit with many people but that made me loose interest in it. I only went on with it to find out what happened in the end. I would have told the author to turn the reality in this down by a huge margin as most of the readers like to read about a world very different from ours. The MC in his previous life used to be fat but is quite good looking in his new body, I would have preferred to know about his previous body as much as possible.

In the end I would like to say that I enjoyed the novel quite a bit and I gave it 4/5. Give it a try if you have a lot of time and are ok with some weird scenes. <<less

I will say this as a reader who read from first to finish and still try to get all ln and manga volume.

Our MC is a f*cking disgusting of a man but he still try his best he still trying to fix his flaw he know he not strong but continue to do anything to protect his family when he reincarnated he just a guy who don't have anything in previous life and just a shitty disgusting otaku and he still be even when he reincarnated hut this story show... more>> that he can gix his flaw that he can grow I do not consent in MC action or anything yes when he stile panty or when he see a s*ave and got erection that was still a thing I hate even now but wite every chapter we start to see what he been doing and how he start to grow a little over time he not a gary stu type he just an ordinary person who want to be happy

The show was about a man who lost everything in the previous life trying and struggles to make his new life happy.

And that not even the best part the show continues to show that people around him grow with him.

The story war lore still connects to the main story like how a supard tribe or other demon tribe even some of demon kin story were so well made that it make me want to know their story more. <<less

You can see this story well planned by author if you read the whole story. Some volumes are a little boring but the plot development is good and you can see how the plot connect each volumes. The world setting is good and country relations and political situations are not out of place and they fitted well in the story. Side characters show development that is hardly seen in other novel.

Good point are many

  • good story
  • good world setting
  • good developments
  • well planned baits
  • Amazing harem building (I am not a fan of harem building development but I have to admit this novel's harem building amazing to the point that it show how their cultures in other world works and how it blends naturally. There is different cultures and different religion and how they came to corporate by respecting each other belief. You can hate harem building that all female characters come to love MC but this novel's harem is too good and show their culture)
  • finally nice conclusion : There are many novel that turn wrong at the final plot or final arcs but this novel conclusion is beautifully well written that deserve praise
There is also some part I don't like

  • Main Character's own development is lacking to the point that irritate readers. There is too many points that can boost MC motivation or his enlightenment but sadly the author is too obsessed with MC's supporting role and neglect his development
  • secondly I don't know the author forgot or not. There is no real objective of Hitogami which is the grand villain who MC's pave the way to ruin. The first dragon god and Hitogami is sworn enemy for no reason and from that time on the first dragon god prepare for his son to defeating Hitogami with all technique available and all arts available. If there is reason for conflict, the story will get more depth. Even after reading, Orsterd and Hitogami is like just filler that is decoration with no meaning in some RPG games
Finally I believe that a good novel is the one that can attract readers to the ends with anticipation. How the plot turn out or how well the plots are connected to is second to consider. For example no matter how good a novel is in connecting or bating plots, if the reader got bored in middle and dropped, it would be meaningless. So I rate the novel by prioritizing how can novel attract readers and every other thing is just for another thing to consider. <<less

The story, how the author tells it. The writing. Frankly everything would be 10/5.

All except the MC's "I'm not gonna kill a single human/humanoid" philosophy nonsense. If he were a loner, he could do whatever he wanted but in a group, if you were to have that kinda thought, you would end up killing your allies and innocent people.
