No holds barred right from the get go. This king shows no mercy. If you're a softie maybe don't read this. It is descriptively brutal in parts and funny in a cringeworthy way in others.

I would have given it 4 stars if it hadn't dragged on in parts and if the world was more fleshed out. As it is I'd say it's a solid 3 stars.

And yes I read it because of the cover art. Kept reading because of the great translation and notes. Stopped when the ML character failed... more>> to develop. Essentially he never really stops feeling like a side character despite being in every chapter with lots of screen time. Kind off reminds me of Bringing the Nation's Husband Home.

On a side note it's amusing to me the reviews that decry Lu Cang's treatment. I feel that they are forgetting that Lu Cang isn't a heroic character to begin with. He's a bandit that leads his men to r*pe and pillage. I say he's just getting his just "desserts".

And another side note
Spoiler

How does our MC maintain a functioning butthole after enduring all that rough trauma. Leakage everywhere is what I'm thinking.

Just like someone in this review said, had this story introduce itself as this sweet fluffy uwu uwu story then I would rate it 1 but this story os true to its characters -we have a tyrant and abusive emperor who fell in love with a naive bandit king.

As much as dogblood it gets, the characters stay true to their personality. Jing didn't became a soft hearted guy whose willing to sacrifice his emperor statue for Lu Cang -for him, his nation is always first. While Lu Cang used to... more>> an arrogant and overbearing, who got serve by a humble pie in the name of Jing. Probably, if I were to rank novels base on how well their characters are written, this will take the first spot.

Then let's not ignore how amazing it's written. Thankfully translator-san is op when it comes to trying to translate it close to the original meaning. I remember feeling too entrance on the scenes from how they were describe, and even up to this day I couldn't read the brothel part as I could feel how Lu Cang felt that time.

But they're relationship is toxic and Stockholm Syndrome! Yeah, but it never claims to be healthy one. The author, the characters -everyone is aware of this fact. This story IS about Stockholm Syndrome, and just like most stories with that theme they ended up together anyway, the only difference is that compare to others in this case it was not necessarily love that made them stay together but Jing's tight leashes on Lu Cang.

For me, this is a very nice resource to have an idea how Stockholm syndrome or even cult relationship works, how it make someone unable to function properly because they are now completely dependent on the other. Once more, the story is not about sweet love, this story is exactly about a tyrant emperor getting want he wants regardless of the others intention. I rated this 5 not cause of how great their love is but because the story was great in presenting a couple with stockholm syndrome. <<less

For this novel, I'll be reviewing it without bias or personal preferences, as I believe in providing an objective analysis. My aim is to present a fair and balanced critique that focuses solely on the merits of the story, characters, and writing style.

MC is simply wonderful and captivating, with a depth and complexity that draw the reader in from the very first page. The author skillfully crafts a multi-dimensional protagonist, allowing readers to empathize with his struggles and triumphs. But I must say he doesn't deserve any type of miserable... more>> treatment from ML.

When I think of ML, only one world comes to mind: cruel, plainly cruel. Repeated r*pes and physical abuse towards the MC throughout the story not only detract from the overall enjoyment but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes and contribute to a toxic narrative. A critique that solely focuses on the merits of the story, characters, and writing style fails to address these problematic aspects, ultimately overlooking important discussions about consent, healthy relationships, and representation.

Being sadistic is up to one's preference and choice, but abusing is straight-up violence. It is important to recognize that glorifying or normalizing physical abuse in storytelling can have real-life consequences, as it may perpetuate harmful behaviors and attitudes towards others. By disregarding the impact of such abusive elements, we miss an opportunity to foster a more inclusive and respectful narrative that promotes empathy and understanding.

I wouldn't deny the fact that I patiently yearned for ML's character development, hoping he would at least show some growth and learn from his violent tendencies. But little did I know. Instead of giving him some manners and a redemption arc, the author just chose to continue glorifying his abusive behavior, reinforcing the harmful notion that it is acceptable or even desirable. Falling in love with a man who has r*ped you numerous times without your consent is mentally and physically abusing you, and worse, ML believes that MC will not be hurt too badly because he is strong. This portrayal of the male lead's abusive behavior not only perpetuates harmful stereotypes but also fails to address the importance of consent and the need for healthy relationships. It is crucial for authors to use their platform responsibly and promote narratives that prioritize respect, empathy, and growth.

Personally, I would have killed ML under any circumstances. <<less

Guys: Don't like, don’t read.

This novel is noncon erotica and appeals to those with a specific kink. At times like these, take a page out of AO3’s book (also a site with a sprawling diversity of explicit content that will not appeal to everyone) : the tag Dead Dove, Do Not Eat, meaning if you know a novel has content that you fundamentally won’t like (i.e., not something ambiguous like characterization or plot pacing), then don’t read it. This sort of content is intentionally aimed a a subgroup of people... more>> who share a small niche. It’s not for everyone. When it comes to the myriad of kinks out there, know your own limits, because there will invariably be a line that’ll make you go “wtf.”

Personally, I loved this novel. For being basically smut, there’s a solid yet succinct framework of plot that ties scene to scene while developing characterization so that the s*x scenes don’t get repetitive and you don’t get bored because the stakes and tension are so high. I was invested in the plot and side chars as well as the main couple.

Also, enemies to lovers!! Unlike this author’s other books, the shou here actually has spirit and fights back and has self-respect to turn down the ML when the ML keeps trying to use carrot and stick type manipulation tactics. Though ofc they get together in the end, and the ending is actually very fluffy/HE. (Though again, this probably depends on your outlook on the ML, because realistically his actions are ofc unforgivable. I read this through a fantasy lens, which imo is how this sort of content is meant to be enjoyed.)

Spoiler

Also... the ML/gong bottoms at the end for once out of gratitude WHICH WAS SO HOT didjsjhsjd there isn’t enough of that in BL I swear to god. Maybe just me tho lol

[collapse]

Yes, the ML is a sadistic f*cking bastard (affectionate). Again, heed the tags!! I will add there is also light gore and urethra play, since the NU tags are kinda sparse. The ML is spoiled, used to getting his way, proud, arrogant, powerful, cruel, and capricious. But when he’s in a good mood, he’s incredibly charming and seductive. He vacillates between ice cold and fiery hot and it’s great lol.

There’s also a manhua for this!! It only has six volumes because the publishing house collapsed which is a tragedy because the art is incredible. Do check it out! <<less

I pretty much read all genre, specially nonfiction/fiction psychological thrill books. So a friend of mine recommended this to me.

Review: only if I could rate in negative!

Only completed the book to know if the ML ever gets the chance to take revenge, but... ofcrs with the Stockholm syndrome tag I shouldn’t have expected something like that. But there should’ve been some sort of retribution to what MC did to ML. Even if that meant for them to have a tragic ending. The way it’s portrayed “happily ever after” ending is... more>> just looked down upon the issue of this dysfunctional relationship, it doesn’t not work like that in real life, and though it is fictional, it’s still ridiculous for author to just brush over and not even mention all the issue that still lies with in the relationship. If the ending author gave is to be justified then the story should’ve ended on a tragedy tone for ML never being able to escape from his own mind’s prison “thinking it’s love”. <<less

Gosh... crazy sick emperor... almost unbearable emotional reading! 🥺😬😰😱🤯 Made me even skipped a chapter to relax my brain then went back reading later. It was when their relationship was at their worst... when MC was wrongly accused, was tortured and almost killed by ML. Smut is in almost all chapters... abusive violent content till 2/3 of the story... you're warned! Despite tags, the description is too light for the way too heavy real content. It seems this author's other works also prone to violent abusive love.

But to be honest,... more>> I was surprised, overall I think it's well written, if put aside the abusive violent smut, considering only the main characters' psychological complexity, the plot, the variety of secondary characters, the main character's evolution for the better ending. In my opinion all these are surprisingly well developed and balanced in 21 chapters. I like the novel's last 1/3 of course which proved MC's mind is not weak at all but someone who strived to stay true to his principles and feelings at the same time.

Once again my basic English exhausted me! <<less

I honestly dont know how to react with this novel. This is not the first novel or story I read that has r**e issues.. but even so, this is too crude even for me. I mean, it's a reach to even think MC could still love the ML after what he went through in his hands. 1 time, 2nd time... Bearable, but 80% of their interc**rses written is non consensual, particularly cruel and non romantic in any ways. Stockholm syndrome is real in this novel.

Not my cup... more>> of tea, but it's not the worst as it's pretty well written and the story ran smoothly.

I have to toast to all fellow readers who are able to finish reading this and at least have a glimpse of the MC/ML happy ending. <<less

I feel like I've seen this plot many times in hardcore yaoi manga - the ones with abusive aggressive possessive MLs who put the MC through hell only to do a 180 and do them right at the end all for the sake of a good ending. For smut alone, regardless of the noncon, it's good if you're open and into hardcore stuff. I just find the story contrived and rather stereotypically common. The only thing that stands out is how the author really went all out with the physical... more>> abuse. This novel is pretty dogblooded in its abuse and plot, is all I have to say. Oh, and for once, it breaks the stereotype of the prettyboy shou and masculine gong, which is refreshing.

If hardcore noncon doesn't faze you, the ending is fine as the ML and MC are mutually happy in the end. Personal pref but I just find it contrived that MC started liking the ML for real and the big changes in the ML from abusive psycho to in love with MC with each regret.

There will be people who will have issues with r*pe fantasies and then there are those who will find it heart wrenching with the dogblood but with a HE. Then, there's me, judging the realism of character reactions and changes within a short 21 chapter story. Well, at least I'm glad the MC gets treated deservedly in the end, after going through all that abuse. Though of course, in reality, abusers don't change.

Translators did a good job, nonetheless. Everything read pretty smoothly. <<less

Before the review, I'd like to get something straight first. I rated this novel so low not because of the obscene and sick things that happened (because duh! I read the tags, I knew very well what I was getting into). I do not have any prejudice against stories that have r*pe/gore/Stockholm syndrome/torture elements. A victim falling in love with the rapist is not something unheard of, and I can't truly speak against them because it's a part of human nature. Stockholm Syndrome, although rare, is a true psychological phenomenon.... more>> So really, this review is not biased against works that contain any of these elements.

Now, coming to the actual review... there was no smooth transition from the vehement hatred to love for the MC. I had expected to read about how MC fell in love with the ML even with all the torture. From what I understand, a victim empathizes with their captor if the latter shows any sympathy or consideration towards the former. However, the ML does not even treat the MC as a human being from the get-go until the very end.

Spoiler
[collapse]

The second point would be character development. (Or the lack thereof) The ML is actually a sick sadistic person who likes to torture people (both mentally and physically for the MC) for his own pleasure. Although we do see changes in the ML's behavior towards the MC, it wasn't a smooth transition. The entire story was just about s*x for him, and r*pe/torture for the MC. The emotional growth wasn't shown and just stated bluntly. However, since the story isn't from the POV of the ML, I'll overlook this fact.

The MC had almost no growth at all. He repeated the same mistake (of going back to the ML, the rapist) again and again. The only difference was the amount of resistance he put up with the passage of time. Initially, he was coerced into submission, and later he was coaxed into submission. That was probably the only difference. Again, as mentioned before, his emotional growth or gradual development of feelings was shown either. They were just bluntly stated.

Spoiler
[collapse]

Lastly, the characters weren't fleshed out. And really, there's almost no plot at all. It's just r*pe after r*pe... and somehow a happy ending of "together ever after". <<less

I personally don’t like the themes, as it really doesn’t go up my alley, however it is written well. The plot flows smoothly, and both characters aren’t... uh how should I say this... amateurish? Or their characters fit the plot is probably a better way to say it.

*cough* not show-offy jade skin like all those other MC’s (blegh) *cough*

But anyways, I can see how this sort of dynamic would appeal to other people, no judgement at all, and if it does, you should give it a try!

I've been sitting here for like two days before picking a rating. It's a hard one, but I'm going with 4 to round up a bit

As always, my premise if: don't like don't read. So the r*pe is not factoring negatively by default in my review (like it is for some people...)
In fact I'm going to be impressed by the fact that Lu Cang is allowed to have a big emotional reaction to the trauma and even cry.
Lu Cang fights it until the very end -until the... more>> epilogue is fighting his feelings for Jing because he is aware of all he has been through and how screwed up everything between them is.

I am also impressed by Jing's character development? In the end he felt almost decent. (Almost.)

As for the plot it is engaging and progresses nicely with some very good angst and whump. My only critic is the end of book 1. Between chapter 10 and the epilogue too much happened that we didn't see and that is vital for the development of their relationship.
Spoiler

Lu Cang gets a title and stays in the capital but we don't see him accept it at all? Where is THAT conversation between them? Where is Lu Cang emotional turmoil over it?

[collapse]

Did Lu Cang deserved better? Oh yeah, absolutely. Does Jing genuinly love him? Yeah. Does Lu Cang love Jing? No doubt.

They are not one of those 'a match made in heaven' ship, they are flawed and they fit together only when they clash... but it works and there is something charming in their story. <<less

OMG!!😍this novel was like a roller coaster for me and for some reasons the setting for characters made it real for me😶 it's full of sad, upsetting, exciting or kinda fun scenes. Although most of time it would taste bitter and make you feel horrible but the few ending chapter made out for all of them specially the last ch 21 🥰☺so if you don't have problem with smut and can handle the sour and nervousness feelings to the end *****READ IT*****it will worth it👌

(Hmmm, I think it's better... more>> to read the manhua first which is not completely translated but help you to image things better) 🧐

The MC is not a flawless one but he is handsome and quiet strong (although he is not a match to your majesty🤭) and the ml=>no matter WHAT I'm pretty sure you will hate him but when thing go further you will come to like and pity him or at list won't extremely hate him anymore (my hatred slowly slowly melted and finally in last ch I forgived him and drown up in a lot of sweetness 💕 and began to pray for their happiness;) <<less

3/5 rounded up to 4. Yes there are r*pe, torture, humiliation, questionable consent with a lot of pain and blood, BUT the story is quiet uniquely interesting. The emperor's personality flipped a 180 degree, from cruel to lovingish. The author did explain why Jing is the way he is and why he treated LC that way. I wished they used healing herbs on LC or something for all the brutal torture he experienced. As for LC falling in love, it was a bit questionable. It's more attachment at first because... more>> he got f*** so much, then slowly turned into love. I'm happy LC was able to standup for himself near the end and bring Jing's down a peg or two. As for Jing to keep sleeping around, he had to due to duty (ugh), but he should have allowed LC to have kids too, but had to be a threesome or something.

Please still give the story a shot if you are open minded, plenty of disclaimers. The translation was nicely done. <<less

I'll be honest, this is a f*cked up story and I absolutely loved it. For those who like aggressive and exasperating stories, this is one of your best shots. Although I don't condone the behaviour that ML displays as a person, the story was enjoyable precisely because of it (to me) everything was mindf*ckery.

Both main characters have engrossing personalities. I was shocked to see the rating in 3s because I expected it to be nothing less than a 4 from how its written and paced and the general plot.

In general,... more>> this is just an imaginary story and interesting to many so don't shy away from the bad things you read about it, you may like it. Had I read the reviews first on NU, I wouldn't have started haha. Although if you do end up disliking because of violence, I'd understand. <<less

Good novel, but...

The first volume was REAL. It did something that a lot of Chinese novels with the same basis don't (my opinion) do : accurate representations (somewhat) of r*pe. It's not the most deep of stories but at least you understand the humiliation and the pain of the protagonist.

The ML is a crazy obsessive sad*st who has no qualms about assaulting whoever attracts his attention and has no pity or consideration for the mental or physical well-being of that person. On the contrary, the more they are in pain... more>> the more he likes it.

I feel like the first volume could stand as a complete story. It would have been a more solid work in my opinion. It starts and ends as a tragedy for the protagonist.

Spoiler
[collapse]

The second volume is kind of milder. There's really no transition between the ML character from the first to the second. He's suddenly less violent, a little bit more caring, etc. And the MC and him are in a somewhat normal relationship, even if the violent temper of the emperor is still there from time to time (during s*x and when he wants to punish MC).

I was disappointed by the lack of psychologycal consequences of ML's past treatment of MC on their current relationship at the start of the second volume (just 6 months later).

However I liked how the 2nd volume discussed the future of the MC with this kind of relationship. He has no real standing, his position is kind of weird in front of the nobles. He has no real family, no descendents, no real power. Everything he has is the favour of the emperor.

The second volume ends on a happy not but it was all over blend. <<less
