I believe the previous reviews are not really fair to this novel.

The narration of the story is similar to “A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality” and “Mo Tian Ji” as they have the same author and the stories occur in a shared universe.

This means that the story unfolds at very slow pace. The MC is not the strongest, most intelligent among his peers in the beginning. There is no one singular event that changes his circumstances forever like “Wu Dong Qian Kun” or “Coiling Dragon” and many other... more>> novels like them. Instead, many less monumental events occur that develop the character into a character that the reader can root for.

The Author does not interject (or very rarely) to give further explanation about the events surrounding the MC. Also, we usually don’t see the inner monologue or thoughts of MC on some matters. This pattern can be seen with his other novels as well. In my opinion, this writing style gives a sense of mystery which we, the readers, are unfolding with MC as the story progresses. This style of writing might not be to every readers taste but it shouldn’t be dismissed by only reading 4 or 8-9 chapter into the story.

Now, MC seems to be practical & determined. He wanted to cultivate. He spend all his money from fishing to this cause. When he got the chance to enter an academy to cultivate, even if that chance came from his dying father who left his son and wife that led to MC’s mother dying, he took that chance without any regret. He even kowtowed to his dead father even though MC should not have any feeling for his father other than hate. Later on, he is showing that he is resourceful. He uses different methods to gather money so he may buy supplies to go one step further in his goal: Cultivation. I am already like to read more about the adventures of this MC.

The Translation is decent. The sentences are not smooth and easy to understand all the time. I believe having an editor would improve the translation greatly. However, I don’t think the translation is annoying enough to stop me from enjoying the novel.

In summary, if you like the author’s two other novels, you may like this one as well. I would suggest that all readers be more patient with this novel because the writing style of Author won’t hook you in until a bit later in the story.

Update chap 18: The proofreader is here and the translation improved a lot because of it. <<less
