Born into a wealthy family, Gu Shenwei was spoiled and carefree. However, at the age of 14, his entire family were brutally mu*dered, and he was caught by some bandits who sold him into s*avery. As a s*ave boy, he entered Golden Roc Fort by chance and found the man who had slaughtered his family. He endured insults and worked hard to improve his kung fu while working as a s*ave boy. He learned from and plotted against his enemy under the enemy’s nose. He became increasingly ambitious as he became more and more powerful. This is a kung fu fiction that is full of mysteries and surprises. This is a story dealing with love, betrayals and distances. This is the journey of an ordinary boy who, against all odds, fought against formidable foes. This is a tale regarding a person who felt abandoned by the world made unremitting efforts to create a new world of his own, in which he was alone.

This is not a typical web novel, it has good story, good characters, good pacing throughout the novel, consistent characters, nice schemes big and small. But to me best thing about this is how real everything feels - no plot armor, there is some sleuthing, some romance but from first to last chapter literally it’s a story about killer, it’s not too dark and it maintains same mood throughout novel. The portrayal of war and strategy is more realistic in comparison with others. But this is not for everyone, Gu’s... more>> decision will be more realistic, neither cruel nor kind consistent with his character, Little or no face slapping (at least not within 10, 20 chapters), not fast paced, Death of his enemy might not be satisfying, romance might not be satisfying. As a previous reviewer put it it’s a bit unremarkable but I feel that is more realistic and satisfying. This Novel reminds me of “Godfather”, the mood & pacing is similar. This is absolutely the best novel in its genre. My favorites were ZTJ or Zhu Xian, so if you liked those you will love this one. <<less

Pretty great story, I have really enjoyed it so far. Definitely worth sticking to beyond the first set of chapters. Occasionally the MC seems to have leaps of logic and cunning far beyond his usual capabilities when it suits the plot or story, but this isn't too overused. He certainly runs into all kinds of interesting problems, at this stage in the story (c133) he appears to be in pretty deep waters with little way out, I look forward to seeing how he either escapes or goes down in flames.

Great Work so far the best one I have ever read

Solid plotline, and no plot armor on sight until now, great character development, no bullsh*t cultivation that only serves to show how badass a MC is either by reaching high levels on a record time or beating foes whose cultivation is above the MC, NO CHEAT skills that make the MC deus ex machina the plot

Imagine Leylin suffering because he doesn't his AI to think for him and you'll get something like this story.

The selling point of this is that it's an actually intelligent protagonist without plot armor doing what he can to survive and eventually overcome his enemies. If you compare this to many of the super lucky "intelligent" idiot protagonists on NU this is somewhat accurate.

If you are expecting a protagonist smarter than a 5th grader you're going to be disappointed. If you're expecting realism rather than grimdark you're going to be... more>> more disappointed. If you're expecting the protagonist/story to mature into what you were told it was going to be, just read the reviews of those who've read further.

If you don't mind that the main theme is reversed plot armor used to forever torture the protagonist, this is one of the better novels in terms of quality. It's both well written and translated. It's just not at all what it says it is. <<less

Death Sutra was written well, it had good descriptions of the world, characters and their surroundings.

It has a large focus on martial arts, schemes and overall the wuxia 'martial hero' theme was very prevalent in the story.

The first ~250 chapters took place in the city, where the main character ended up after s*avery, it was dark and troubled times for the main character, he experienced a lot of growth during the time.

... more>> After ~250 chapters you get into a lot more politics and schemes.

Yeah it's been a good in-depth read so far, yet I'm just annoyed how weak and fragile the main character is. I suppose that's one of the selling points for some people. I just like books that make me interested and have some form of anticipation and feeling of satisfaction whilst reading the book.

The main character seems like a strong, prideful, intelligent and cold-hearted killer to other. Yet he is just a fragile edgy man-boy inside. He spends too much time investigating random sh*t during the story. I'm sure he would have become some weak-willed, idiotic young master if his family was still alive. Well written, enjoyable for most readers I would assume, I didn't like it and that's ny subjective opinion. <<less

I tried to like this novel because it was different from everything else. It has a darker theme, and the MC doesn’t have too many lucky encounters.

Still, this novel did not deliver. The author seems to be obsessed with gay s*x, to the point that it’s said that every young master keeps at least one male prostitute. Male prostitution and gay r*pe jokes are mentioned so often you’d think this is an adult novel.

The story progresses very slowly, which may or may not be a good thing. But in this... more>> case, everything just keeps getting worse for the MC. It has become such a chore to read, and the slow story makes it worse. Hey author, at least give us something to look forward to, otherwise, your story would just be a boring retelling of an assassin’s life which no one is interested in.

You can see in this novel an MC who is slowly losing himself. I gave up shortly after the MC killed a kid (for no reason since the target was actually his father) while his master r*ped his mother. The MC kills so many innocent people just to hone his skill his revenge becomes meaningless and hypocritical. Why should he be the MC when he’s the same as his enemies? A novel is a failure when the readers don’t care about the MC. <<less

This is a great novel with a ton of intrigue, betrayals, character motivations, character growth, et cetera. You have to get through the first volume to understand why this is a good novel, because even if you stop there, it feels like a complete novel. It goes on after that with a shift from the location of the castle towards nations and empires, and it's very different but well done.

This novel is not about cultivation, it's really about the characters, and they're all flawed selfish individuals. They are annoying, they... more>> are scheming, and you don't root for them because they are formerly tr*sh, righteous heroes overcoming adversity with lucky cultivation powerups and saving jade skin beauties. People in this novel bleed. Life is cheap. Motivations are more important than outcomes. The beginning of the book is hard to get through because they aren't likeable characters, and the situations they are in are just opressive. If you can't get through it, you won't enjoy the rest of the novel, because you want simple, uncomplicated fantasy.

There are about as many important female characters with their own interests as there are male characters, but I have to say it. There are too many women who are so thirsty to get some that they try to kill people. The novel is heavily invested into the idea of plots of betrayal and assassinations, and you get a lot of that. <<less

START TRANSLATING THIS AGAIN IT IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! This is the most whole and incredible online novel I've ever read. I would recommend this tenfold to anyone whose bored by the repetitive, annoying Chinese Novel cultivation MC and the copy and paste plot and dialogue. And if you are looking for a cheap and easy, let's be strong and beat the arrogant bullies wish-fulfillment bullcrap, you won't find that here either. (As I would characterize the fine folks who left their poorly written negative reviews.)

This is an epic revenge... more>> story that spans countries, years and many, many character deaths. If Netflix were looking for a main character driven Game of Thrones replacement, this would be it. This would blow anything in production out of the water.

Premise (Spoiler free if you've read 5ish chapters) :
Spoiler

Gu Shenwei is the naive spoilt son of a well-to-do martial family set in a fantasy version of China. His entire family is mu*dered by an assassination group called Golden Roc Castle, and he, by a series of coincidences, is sold into s*avery and now works in Golden Roc castle.

This novel is about how a pampered young man, cloistered from the real world, is now forced to confront his naiveté and become ruthless, cold and profit-seeking. He has to find a way to exact revenge when his enemies are far stronger, smarter and better organised than he is. The reader grows with the character and sees why Gu Shenwei becomes more calculating and less trusting when betrayal and death are common. Sit in suspense as Gu Shenwei builds alliances, unravels plots and kills far too many people in order to discover the why and who behind his families' death.

There are twists and turns, betrayals and victories. Each chapter is a cliffhanger. This is a novel written by a truly maniacal author who thought hundreds of chapters ahead when introducing plot points and probably has a copy of the 48 Laws of Power on his nightstand.

The book isn't perfect but what it does well, it does incredibly well. Also far too many books that are far worse than this have raving 5 star reviews. The worst part of this book is that the translation stopped at chapter 971 (The author continued writing till 1200ish). Also be glad that all of these chapters are available to read, I had to painstakingly wait for the excellently translated chapters to be translated week by week. Also don't believe any reviews that haven't read the first 250 chapters.

Truly one of a kind.

No cultivation system, No super powers. Ordinary MC.

Only thing I can describe about this novel is that MC masters Dao of s*avery and Dao of Kneeling to very high degree. Readers who got bored of cultivation and Super Duper MCs can try this to get sober for a while.

Rating: 10/10 (my favorite)

This is a true masterpiece. This has REAL character development. The first things that come to mind fascinating about this novel:

    • human nature: many types of character and their interaction
    • how life changes a person over time fundamentally and how it doesn't
    • the art of leading people and climbing to the top of power hierarchy (not dumb plain cultivation strength)
    • next level plotting
    • different cultures and society in kind of medieval world
    • a supranatural lore of the world that exists but is veery well hidden

Its very easy to fall into one of the many pitfalls that ruin a story for me. The basic issue that most novels suffer from is being written by kids, and that mean no real eye for adult interactions, social context, and greater world building. Here is also no leveling up that wastes word-space for what could be used to drive the main heart of a story which is plot and characters. The theme is dark, the politics are real and brutal and the magic which is a sort of... more>> a divine kung fu is there as one of the main plot elements, but it does not take over the story. Of all the novels that I am currently tracking only Da Tang Shuang Long Zhuan comes close. Highly recommended. <<less

Starts off with a somewhat bad hook - the MC, still a young and arrogant kid, is very s*upid and his reasons for revenge sound something less like actual passion and more of a duty - as if he's being a hero for doing it, and that it'll be incredibly easy. This can be off-putting for many readers. This doesn't last too long though, within 20 chapters he's realized the complications in achieving his goal for revenge.

MC also quickly learns how to adapt once he's placed in several dangerous, political... more>> situations. He becomes incredibly jaded, manipulative and cold-hearted as an after-effect of living in a dog-eat-dog world. By then people would actually find him more enjoyable, as he smartens up and plays the strategist.

What's the most attracting about this story is the characters. The author is smart enough not to make characters black and white, every important character has depth in them. Sometimes you can't help but feel bad for a few of them, in spite of being legitimately shitty people.

A bad thing might be the number of chapters. If you binge reading, you'll probably have a blast, but if you're waiting for chapters it can become more of a chore. <<less

I'm being generous with the 2 stars here. The plot is simple. Revenge. The problem is there's not much going on in this novel. It's more like an over blown drama where after close to 300 chapters, none of the main culprits die.

There's no climax either. Every time an enemy is killed, it's so downplayed and bodes no satisfaction at all.

Too many unnecessary chapters just to prolong word counts.

Character development is almost non existent. Battles are short and lacking. There's no epic moments here.

TLDR: A waste of time.

MC is a loser. He always thinks of revenge even though it's somewhat tiring to see his half-baked plots and his schemes. He would always lose in some form and his plans always fail.

After the first book he didn't even know what the f*ck he even wants. It goes from lone killer avenging his family to addiction to killing who no longer knows how to live. He tries to be a leader and gathers an army but always makes s*upid decisions.

Even king fu is disappointing as author always gives him... more>> a handicap no matter what. He isn't even strongest guy around even after many chapters.

He always gets betrayed and now he didn't even want to kill family who killed his family. He clings to revenge but also tries to be an overlord even knowing that he is always a killer not a leader and not intelligent. <<less

This novel would have been good if it were more modern. I just can't get into wuxia novels since they're more lacking compared to Xuahuan and Xianxia in terms of power levels. It just feels wrong that the final boss or power level can atmost destroy a single building yet they have some weird magic like internal Qi. Either it's lack of imagination, bottleneck or just me. As for the novel itself, it was perfect but I would have preferred if they didn't have internal Qi cultivation and just make... more>> them normal humans. As for the reviews about how this could be a real book, it's not good enough. The writing is not properly structured or intricate. It follows the same writing formula as other web novels like an over-simplistic writing style and increased word count <<less

I feel that the MC is becoming more s*upid with every chapter. There is always action at gold roc Fortress and MC is hell bend on solving every plot. The storyworld is a total shithole and MC doesn't have to turn his head to find another plot. If MC just stay inside his house and cultivate, he will become stronger and maybe the fortress will collapse from its numerous enemies and he will have his revenge sooner.
