A semi-serious school action story revolving around the main protagonist, Tomoharu Natsume. He is haunted by his childhood friend, Misao Minakami, who became a ghost ever since he barely survived an airplane accident three years earlier. Tomoharu Natsume takes the opportunity to live on his own when he enters high school in his new place of residence, Meiou-tei, and starts enjoying a carefree high school life. His life changed when a beautiful girl named Kurosaki Shuri appears with a trunk which she claimed Tomoharu’s brother, Naotaka Natsume, asked her to deliver to him. The presence of the trunk causes the appearance of Takatsuki Kanade, a girl dressed like a shrine maiden who is after the trunk. Tomoharu is in possession of the trunk, which reveals secrets about the world they live in.

How do people hate this? It is perfectly lined up for the genre it is in. This is PURE shounen at it's finest. There was an anime (2 seasons, 24 (?) total eps) that covered the entire story, so you can check that out instead of this. I watched it as it aired a decade ago or whenever, and promptly fell in love. I even ended up importing the LN and read them with my sh*tty Japanese knowledge soon after.

Long story short: this is shounen. If you hate the things... more>> that come with shounen, such as GIANT ROBOTS, GHOST GIRLS, SHRINE MAIDENS, love triangles, quirky casts, ridiculously complex time-travel/dimensional shenanigans, and so on, then avoid this. It really is that simple. Don't hate on this for being shounen. That'd be like hating Slam Dunk because you hate sports manga.

The MC is hopelessly confused by what he's been caught up in, because to him the world is normal, save for his ghostly childhood friend who's haunting him. Then he gets giant robots, magic, people trying to kill him, demons, cyborgs with big b**bs, and so on, at his new school. So give the guy some slack. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but neither is he an idiot like the other review claims. And while the main cast is an utterly ridiculous list of tropes (ghosts, mikos, cyborgs, goth lolis, vampires, and more lol), they are all good characters with their own pasts and motivations, and the SETTING is amazing. The world is a very complex place, but it is VERY hard to understand because we're getting introduced to it the same way as the MC, one bit at a time.

Anyway, this here is Sum Gud Sh*t. I highly recommend the anime, and would say 'I wish this were translated more', but I have read the LN, so I don't particularly care if it's translated lol. It was good.

P.S. This is the same author who later went on to write Strike The Blood, which also had a few seasons of anime, some OVAs, etc, and the LN are currently being translated by Seven Seas I think. It is ALSO really good harem-battle-shounen, so if you liked that, give this a try. <<less

Good novel. You dont know friend from foe, have a lot of characters with different motives. The anime was like a condensed potion. Like H.P. Or LOTR. I would like to read the rest.

BUT: Bad update rate. Baka-Tsuki tends to drop novels I like. Just found this one today. Should have not started reading.

The MC is a dumb idiot who can't think with his own brain. Someone who can't talk about his own conclusions and even dense.

You're going to read about the legend of the most infuriating idiot of an MC.

I get it that this is a story for kids.

... more>> But come on! I knew grade schoolers who are more intelligent than this MC..

Relationships are too shallow except for the relationship with Misao.

A world that revolves around the student council is not good for a super hero Gundam story. It's only good enough to be a Gag manga!

Watch the anime if you want the story. At least the BGM is good. <<less
