If you're looking for a fluffy romance, this should certainly not be on your radar of must reads. From beginning to end, it's nothing but an angry read. In fact, I really didn't feel much romance until practically the end of the story.

The lead MC is betrayed, poisoned, divorced, tortured, sent to be an army prostitute, given aphrosiasiciacs, r*ped, has a miscarriage, shot at, imprisoned, has her martial arts sealed many times, and etc.

Although she is only been with one man throughout the story, every type of generic plot device revolving around misunderstanding is used.

It wasn't until towards the end that I stopped rooting for all the male leads to die. This is only when most of the misunderstandings have been resolved and the MC has been, has been through some depressing plot devices.

I can't quite say I liked the MC that much. Supposedly she's been trained to be good in the arts, martial arts, and military strategies. However, I felt that in military matters she may have been good at planning but her personal life was a mess which could have been avoided with her skills. For living in the army for most of her life, she also should have been smarter instead of being so easily manipulated in politics. For all her, harsh experiences, I also felt like she was too gentle and easily forgave others.

Overall, it's a happy ending with a monogamous relationship after countless chapters of angst until the end. The romance itself is also puzzling. There are the typical male obsessed leads but the MC herself doesn't feel love until much later making the reader feel extremely confused who she will end up with.

FS has mixed feelings about this novel ne.

True, it's a lot better than some other novels though.

Spoiler

However, with how the female lead is suffering left and right seemingly without end, FS doesn't know whether to continue reading or not ne. Every male lead is really getting on FS's nerves ne!!! Selfish bastards!

SPECIALLY THAT Ji Feng Li! He should just die somewhere! Poor Jin Se who died because of him and Wen Wan!

And that Wen Wan b*tch is irritating as well, from the looks of it no one can be better than her otherwise they will suffer as the Male leads are actually smitten by her! Just a frown from her, regardless of whether Wan b*tch was the wrong party, one male lead will do everything to please her. Even the female lead was supposed to die for her sake!

This novel is just so full of angst FS can't stand it but FS seems to be a masochist and is still reading this, hoping that the female lead will get the justice she deserves!

Impressions as of Ch 12.

Well that was unexpected. The description above is a nice summary, but basically you’re going to read about an independent-minded and capable young lady with a poor reputation (because she uses a stand-in while going about her own hobbies) who was to be married to the man of the hour... only to be packed off to a hostile country as part of an elaborate scheme perpetrated by her husband-to-be and sanctioned by the Emperor.

Those expecting a typical palace drama right off the bat should... more>> reconsider, as the story immediately opens with a conspiracy involving different countries and the MC finds herself being played around like a chess piece.

Only, she is not content to be one. It is early days yet but it seems she will make those who underestimated her and used her would pay for what they have done, even if it includes the royalties from both countries.

The prose and story-writing felt more like a narration, but the premise is enough to keep me interested,

Interesting hook, will continue to read. <<less

Such a great idea yet so poorly executed.

Spoiler

Heroine is apparently super smart and strategic but can’t save herself out of a paper bag. There’s things that happen in the story where you feel so frustrated you want to throw your phone.

Main female leads ends with abusive cheating first husband that poisoned her and r*ped her. Wow. Talk about poor choices.

i came here by accident decided to try it out because hey, I might like it, right?

sigh.

too much wangst. Too much DRAMA. I don't like any of the characters, including the MC, who is supposed to be clever and yet really isn't. She kept making my grind my teeth in irritation.

i tried it but it's not for me.

It seems this novel has different versions. At some point, I decided to look up the raws to read. I have found raw versions different from the translation. You can find both versions on many different sites. I am not a native Chinese speaker. My ability to read Chinese is very minimal. I MTL and read some raw to understand some awful MTL. The plot is the same in both, but the details in some situations are different. I believe they are both authentic. I'm just including this, so readers... more>> can be aware of some raw not matching up to what they have read so far.

Version 1: Mostly what the translations based off of. MC is smarter/stronger here. Love interests had better personalities. ML is less ruthless and slightly more forgiving than version 2.

Version 2: MC is more emotional, and s*upider here. Love interests had worst personality, way more unlikable than version 1. ML was more ruthless that there is just no way anyone can forgive him. Side characters had different roles, story, and personalities.

Both version had its own flaws. Version 1 was smoother in flow, but some details didn't match up whereas Version 2 made more sense, but the same can also be said about Version 1 in some situations. Character development was better in 1 than 2. Possible love interests had more showtime in Version 2 than Version 1. Version 2 felt more like a rough draft, while Version 1 was polished, which made some details not match up with story unlike 2. This disconnection didn't interrupt the overall plot. Version 2 felt more focused on side characters and bringing in more drama. Version 1 was a bit more plot line focused. The execution was overall better, and felt more enjoyable to read.

In the end, it's the author's choice. Writing a story is not easy, so I appreciate the author in taking their time to come up with a story for others to read. Overall, it's an okay read. Not the best, and not the worst. There are uncomfortable, anger inducing moments, but there are also some funny, bittersweet, and romantic moments. It's not a story to read if you cannot stomach abuse, or clingy love interests. Based off Version 1, my rating is more of 2.5 than 3. Version 2, would be more like a rating of 1.

In case you're curious about the differences in version 1&2. There are spoilers below.

Love interests, differences in characteristics version 2:
Spoiler

Xiao Yin: Version 1 made him more pitiable. His end with MC ended on a sweeter side, they once had feelings for each other, but they lost their moment. It is one-sided now, but has become a good memory. Version 2 was not as sweet, and makes him less likable. He felt one sister was enough, he didn't want another one. He still wanted to chase her.

Don Qian Jin: In Version 1, he was likable, and I wished he had more appearances. I had some bias for him since he had no connection to Wen Wan. He is kind, understanding, and supportive in MC's choices with her life. In Version 2, he had more appearances. He was annoying, and lacked that supportive personality.

Huangfu Wu Shuang: He was mostly the same in both versions, at least in the parts I have read. He tried to marry MC. They were in the bed chambers, and the details were different in Version 1 & 2. Version 2 made a bit more sense when MC later had to explain to ML she was planning on kicking HWS. In Version 1, she already kicked him, so the explanation didn't make sense. In Version 2, HWS was going to force himself, so she played along waiting for opportunity to kick him.

Ji Feng Li: I guess there may actually be a 3rd version? Or maybe some sites removed a few lines because they thought the detail was too inappropriate. Anyway, the assault in the barrack was still brutal, and there was slightly more detail. It wasn't even too s*xual in detail imo. In translated version, he thrusted without preparation, and completed the deed. In another version, the few lines missing from translation, says he still hesitated when it was in, he didn't move, and struggled with the drug for awhile until he couldn't. In the end, this scene did happen, but the few extra lines added a different perspective that was consistent with his character, as he disdained falling to these urges. The way he found out MC was the woman he slept with in the barrack was also not as agonizing. Although, near the end, he became irrational and did what he disdained in both versions. In Version 2, overall, he was more ruthless, even purposely hurting the MC emotionally.

[collapse]

MC & ML Revelation and Resolution differences:
Spoiler

Since we mainly read from MC's POV, Version 2 was disappointing with her resolution with JFL. In Version 1, the way he learns of all the confessions and misunderstandings was touching through little notes she left him. In Version 1, she was pregnant and lost the child, which add a bit more emotional touch to the story. It gave readers a sense of satisfaction that JFL finally knew how much he hurt MC, and how he was feeling about all her pain. In Version 2, she wasn't pregnant, and the whole clear up of misunderstanding was very cliche. It was spilled from mouth of others. JFL emotions was glanced over. It just felt painful as a a reader to read that he didn't even agonize over it, yet they still ended up together. If there wasn't different versions as comparison, then I wouldn't feel like JFL was even forgivable. He is only more forgiving in Version 1.

[collapse]

The side characters were slightly different in Version 2:
Spoiler

JinSe was kind of forgotten by MC in second half for both version, but she played a role in revealing the barrack night. The way it was revealed was different. In version 2, ML overhears the conversation. JinSe had a bigger role and plot in the barrack incident. She also knew what happened and who ML slept with, but lied. Her goal was to get ML to be under aphrodisiac with the candles, and timed when it would take effect. Her goal was to take advantage of the situation and poison him with a slow acting fatal drug.

Wen Wan wasn't as awful compared to Version 1. She tried to defend MC, and helped clear some misunderstanding with MC and ML. JFL believes MC isn't in love with him. WW tells him that when JFL was executed, MC attempted su*cide over his death to follow him. The fact WW tried to tell JFL of MC's love, despite herself also having feelings for JFL, made her a better person. However, this lost that emotional impact on the confession scene in Version 1.

The revelation and the confession was the most touching in Version 1. It was just a more satisfying outcome, that made it a more enjoyable read.

[collapse]

About ML, this is more opinion and same in both versions:
Spoiler

As much as I don't like ML, I believe MC did not fit with any of the love interest either. ML had the most connection to MC, and more chances of development. It was expected they would be together, and it made sense based off of amount of interactions.

Not just the ML, but all the characters have some complicated personalities based off Version 1. Like with HWS, I always felt his love for her was more like surrogate mother than romantic.

I don't understand why author makes MC always suffers. Misfortune always befall to her. She is so s*upid. How can s*upid person succeed in revenge? She was simple schemed by others and that was repeated. Not ruthless enough, soft heart but wants revenge. Wth. And it seems MC doesn't hated her big enemy but it seems like quarrell between husband and wife. She tried to save her second enemy's son with excuse because he is innocent. She only wants to search the mastermind. Ouch. My heart was moved. Very... more>> very very moved.

Xiao yin has purple eyes. I don't understand how author makes he thinks MC is his sister because MC has black eyes. Maybe all character is s*upid. <<less

This is a makjang plot-within-a-plot-within-a-plot storyline. Because there are so many schemes, the villians may be the good guys and vice versa. MC is a General's daughter who battles on the field in male disguise and is one of the top 4 martial experts in the world. She is also astoundingly beautiful and plays music and dances like a dream. She has many differerent identifies throughout the story, and serves different masters then turns around and battles their troops in war, so it can get confusing.

The first chapters are stilted, but the translation is much improved afterwards. TOTAL, TOTAL SPOILER AND PLOT SUMMERY ALERT (because it's easy to be misled and dislike the novel based on the MC not knowing all the plots around her) :

Spoiler

On her wedding night to the Chancellor (ML), the MC's martial arts are sealed (thanks to her dad's scheme), she is poisoned (thanks to the Emperor and Chancellor's schemes), divorced, and sent to marry the Northern Crown Prince (thanks to the Southern Crown Prince and Emperor's schemes).

The MC's wedding entourage is ambushed (thanks to her dad and Chancellor's schemes), and her maid dies a grisly death in her place (but her maid actually lives and pretends to be MC, then pretends to be a princess, thanks to Chancellor's scheme).

Northern Crown Prince takes her to the Nothern Kingdom, makes her an army prostitute (but nothing happens, her virtue is intact), shoots her with an arrow, tortures her with dislocating all her finger joints, but lets her stay as his musician servant.

MC rescues her dad from beheading in the Southern Kingdom, but he dies anyway (he actually lives, it's all his scheme). MC returns to help Northern Crown Prince plan battle strategies and win wars. Northern Crown Prince falls in love with her believing she is a lowly female. She pretends to be his long lost sister (but it's actually her maid's birth secret identity).

MC disguises as a male musician in Southern Kingdom and gets her martial arts back. Southern Crown Prince kidnaps and castrates her in jealousy (she's okay though and pretends to be a eunuch). MC serves Southern Crown Prince as a loyal eunuch until he gets deposed when his brother becomes Emperor. Southern Crown Prince falls in love with her believing she is a eunuch.

MC then joins the Chancellor and fights with him on the battlefield against the Northern Emperor (who was the Northern Crown Prince). Chancellor falls in love with MC believing she is a eunuch. Chancellor is poisoned with an aphrodisiac so he r*pes MC without knowing her identity.

Southern Crown Prince becomes Southern Emperor and MC returns to be his loyal chief eunuch. MC miscarries (her dad's scheme, but she thinks it's the Southern Emperor's scheme). Southern Emperor orders Chancellor beheaded (Chancellor fakes his own death, it's all his own scheme) and tries to marry MC when he realizes she is a woman.

Chancellor overthrows Southern Emperor and takes the throne (this is already the 4th Southern Emperor in this plot), MC is pregnant again and somehow joins the civil war to fight against the ML. Her dad dies (thanks to ex-Southern Crown Prince's scheme) so MC injures ML (the ex-Chancellor). Then both MC and the ML get poisoned again. Out of nowhere, the ex-Southern Crown Prince becomes a mature, scheming, super-martial arts expert. That's as far as I am in the plot now.

Birth secrets come out - MC's dad is not her dad, she is actually a princess from the previous dynasty. The Southern Crown Prince is not from the royal bloodline. The Chancellor is the oldest son of the royal bloodline. The Eastern Prince is the MC's cousin. MC's maid is the lost Northern Princess.

[collapse]

I don't actually know whether to recommend this novel. The first story arc (where she is weak) was emotionally painful to read, but when she is strong again, I read the story because I wanted to know how the plot would be resolved. Plenty of angst, drama, plot twists, and scheming.

This novel has a great potential... Story is refreshing because the MC is not someone who was reincarnated, crossed dimension or time travelled, also she is not plain and weak as others have thought... Tragedy after tragedy befalls into her at the beginning, can’t wait until she gets her revenge to those who tricked her.. I hope translators continue to TL this novel...

I dropped this novel 3/4 after reading it. There are so many misunderstanding and unfortunately I assume the wrong person as male lead. When I realized I rooted for the wrong person, and whole-heartedly hated the male lead, I'd rather stop reading and continue my own fantasy story of my chosen couple. It has so many potential that's why my disappointment is also bigger. So, reader for your own safety, the male lead is JFL.

So far I am loving this story! I actually put it off for a while because I thought it was going to be a typical "heroine proves that she is worth something. OP status up in here and you'll regret not marrying me and what not" but the story is actually very different from that. Throughout reading the story so far I feel so bad for the MC and the crap she has to go through and I love it so much because she's not an OP character but at... more>> the same time she is still very smart and this makes her character seem so much more realistic. The story is a lot darker than one would expect from the synopsis, but I freaking love angst and tragedy because I have no life so bring it on! I really hope that this story is continued and that it can gain more readers because it really is worth a read. <<less

Glad that I didn’t drop this novel beaded on reviews. Set in ancient China, this story is full of intrigue, mystery, drama and hidden agendas. Nothing is as what it seems. The FL goes through a lot but she is also a very strong person. Romance is slow and a bit late. If someone read 10 chapters and gave up on this that review is crap. There is ton of angst. At 126 chapter things are getting clearer but it is still not completely clear. I prefer this kind of... more>> FL to the insipid useless ones or even the completely OP ones. Worth ready. So far has one scene that can be considered as r*pe. But why it happens is also because of a misunderstanding and starts a ton of misunderstanding too. Translation is good. Hopefully won’t stop.
When reading this remember this is set in ancient time with ancient sensibilities. Army prostit**es existed even in modern times until a few decades ago. So that is not new. Cruel leaders and emperors also existed. It was a dog eat dog world. So when SML torchered and hurt the FL it is normal to that time. Modern sensibilities don’t apply. Is it right? No but you are reading a story set in ancient time. Don’t read it if you can’t take it. Don’t judge until you read till the end.

Definitely recommend ready. It is heavy. <<less

I'm so glad I didn't dump this novel based on the reviews here cause it's actually good. It is not your typical romance web novel but I guess that's what I like about it. I like all the characters (well except Wen Wan cause she's a sick b***h) cause they feel real; the FL is strong, in my opinion. Yes, she makes mistakes and falls into traps but hey, that's life. The MLs aren't all-knowing and invincible either - yes, they were jerks at times but, given the time of... more>> the story, this isn't unexpected. First off, I read spoilers and I'm super mad the ML is her supposedlyfirst husband. WTF!!! Considering I'm only a little ways into the story, I'm being very open minded at the moment but why must the author give us so many better ships. The story is well written IMO and I love how strong our MC is. It's a little slow paced and the male ship I jumped on (Crown Prince XY) sunk, so I'm actually very disappointed. Regardless, I gave it 5 stars because it's an interesting read

Can't stand all bastard ML thus dropping this.

MC is clearly pawn for ML. I just don't like that it also tagged "romance". Was linger to wait for MC to take revenge, till this chapter..

Spoiler

ML poison MC with aphrodisiac for his own gain and "regret" it thus try to "take responsibility" by vowing marriage to her before "netralize" it by having s*x with her without her consent, only stopping when he thought she might be her biological sister. Tr*sh.

All sorts of things happen to all our major characters in this one. It's heart rending and yet you stuck with it. Thankfully it's not a tragedy but it takes many winding roads before the story ends. However as many different directions as the overarching story happens they are creative in The solutions and the reader stays on The edge of their seats. The translation is great and I appreciate the translator notes. So give it a try and hold on, it's quite the ride.

eh... I have mixed feelings about this novel. The flow of the story are good, and the translation team really did a great job.

You might want to be warned that the FL is SUPER SUPER SUPER UNLUCKY eventhough she is quite OP. The ML is quite hateful and unpleasant in the beginning (all MLs were though). But please, try to read it until finish, and don't be too affected with the bad reviews, it's worth your time, really

I kinda have love / hate with this kind of genre, because it’s always quite aghasty and torturous. This one even more so. The author give the FL an op character and even a mary sue halo, but she was almost plot to death or torture by almost all the ML at 1st sight. The angsty-est bit*h you've ever read :DDDDDDD

No seriously this is NOT a light and fluffy novel. It's great if you like drama, angst, and torturing yourself.

Plot is pretty good, it's pretty special, and I feel like the characters are decent.

... more>> But one has to wonder, is this a masochist's wet dream??? Seriously it's almost continual suffering for like, 150+ chapters.

However, I wouldn't rate it bad though, because in the end, I think it's actually a pretty good novel. I think some others might rate it low due to their personal preference not being what is basically self-torture, but hey, it goes to show how the novel can really make you feel things, you know?

I just feel like sometimes the plot goes down ways that are really unsatisfying

Spoiler

Like how the MC ends up with Ji Feng Li, not Xiao Yin.

Or when the MC loses her martial art prowess, which we don't get to see much of. However, I feel somewhat unsatisfied due to her never really showing us her martial prowess. Like come on, she's suppose to be one of the most powerful martial artists. The way that plot ended is honestly just disappointing.

Also she loses her baby, which, while realistic considering her situation, is just so f*cking depressing.

The whole getting r*ped and losing her baby part honestly feels like a cop-out by the author to explain why she should end up with a certain character as opposed to another.

Not to mention the whole Xiao Yin situation. Amnesia? Seriously?????? I'm really starting to hate that goddamn trope. Like, there are times when it's used well, but this... this just feels like another cop-out by the author.

[collapse]

Then again, maybe some of my resentments listed in spoilers will be resolved, since I'm only on 161 right now.

I rated it 4 stars because it's a pretty good novel actually, only that it's very extremely dark and heavy. <<less
