I loved this author's work previously - Lost you forever. I really thought I have stumbled upon a great writer - which still I hold on to... However- the crafting here is a bit off key -- Yes, It is too angsty - though realistic for the teen years and hence acceptable - the age when you doubt yourself as well as everyone around you...I am fine with that angst and unresolved messing up of relationships due to that.
I can accept open ending under some circumstances... Not here though - I came to listen to your story - this ending looks like a writer's unresolved dilemma and she conveniently left it to the readers!!
Spoiler

Xu Bo is so decisive in everything so far. In the epilogue- he sleeps through the day (even though his friend facilitated that!) and leaves it to our interpretation in the end!! Nope. Not acceptable

[collapse]
This is character inconsistency.
Some authors do write very realistic stories and do leave an open ending. Here - the actions of the protagonists are sometimes too OP and yet this is the ending. Can't accept it.
I still feel that this author writes beautifully - Just this unresolved ending after patiently bearing through all that angst - feels very unsatisfying.

Review as of v2 c9, rated 5.

What did you do when you were at schools? How did the teacher treated you? Were you able to get together with your first love or let he/she go to another instead?

We all probably have regrets and precious treasures at equal amount kept deep within our heart since that time when we were still naive little students, and this is what the book does best: invoking poignant, faraway memories of our own youth, parallel with that of the MC. However, this book's "dedicated to... more>> our youth" part refers to the 1990s, which will make readers who are currently around late 20s or early 30s feel wonderfully nostalgic, but the younger ones may feel disconnected with some of the cultural references and circumstances that built up the largest part of the story. Nevertheless, this book deserved 5 stars rating, not only for the feelings it invoked, but also for its steady character development and superb narrative. Aside of the MC growth that was visibly convoluted, there were plenty side characters, which although the author didn't dwell on them, but readers could see that each of them had their own distinct personality. It's a wonder how the author managed to do this while keeping up with the plot and maintaining its nostalgic nuances. <<less

This is a BEAUTIFUL masterpiece.

It depicted the story of the MC's youth. Together, we walked through the highs and lows, sweetness and bitterness, growth and changes she experienced. She is NOT an almost perfect protagonist, NOT a fiction. She feels so human and so relatable. She has flaws and weaknesses but she's there --- growing, learning and improving. I can't help but cheer her up in every step she takes.

This gives the feels of a soft acoustic music playing during a rainy night. Wanna make you sigh and talk about... more>> life. So good. <<less

I have read this book, beginning to end, at least 5 times and every time, I read it slower. I find myself going back over scenes I just read and really reveling in the emotions of each character in each moment.

These characters' personalities and life experiences don't mirror my own even a little, and yet I would rank this book at the top of my list of stories that closely represent how I feel, and especially that closely represent the conflicting feelings I have regarding my own past self. It... more>> is a remarkably cathartic read.

Writing and translating were superb. Thank you, translators.

Story and characters gripped me from beginning to end.

I found the ending to be the perfect mixture of satisfaction and longing for more.

Absolutely recommended. <<less

I love this book so much. I just started reading yesterday yet I got hooked. In the end, I finished reading the available translations.

This book is so realistic that it seems as if I experienced it myself. Although I'm one of the younger generation, I could say that this book is a good materials. It explained about how one decision can change the way of how life used to be.

I especially like the MC. She may seems like a nerd at first but then unexpectedly, she's very brave and wild. She got that type of stubborn personality that hate being underestimated. The storyline and plot, everything is perfect. Each characters got their own story and problems whereas how they end up become. I have to say, this book is very harsh because this is really the outlook of life.

The poem and the words is pretty much beautiful. It seems as if the author himself/herself explained how he/her childhood day was like, how different it was compared to the present and how the laws become more stricter with a lot more crimes crawling around the streets. It also showed about people's life; if they work hard, they may achieve things that they want. It also showed that some other subjects cannot be learn by memorizing only. Only understanding could one become good at it.

I have to say, I respect the author who wrote this book. It's such a good one with a lot of morals anx things about how childhood may influence themselves.

This story is very deep. Peopld would definitely won't regret reading this. <<less

It's actually very, very good. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a satisfying ending, in my opinion.

Spoiler

There are three epilogues, the first one tells the story about Zhang Jun in the present time, about how he—unsurprisingly showed up near the river where Luo Qiqi is waiting for Xiaobo. But he doesn't approach her, for God's sake, he just crouched down behind a bush and cried, lamenting about how the present is not the same with the past. Yes, it makes sense, but it just doesn't sit well with me. What's the point of making him go to that place if there's no settlement in the end?

[collapse]

It's so upsetting, at that point I just want to stop reading it but I can't because I still hope that somehow it'll be better.

But it's not.

Spoiler

The other two epilogues are about Xiaobo and how his life's going after severing ties with Luo Qiqi. I kind of like his side of story so much because it sounds logical and touching at the same time. And I keep thinking and thinking that maybe the ML is Xiaobo all along, if it's true then I'll be more than glad to list him as one of my favorite MLs. However, there's actually no settlement about Xiaobo and Luo Qiqi's relationship. The last epilogue just ended with how Xiaobo is trying to meet Luo Qiqi (he's late because his friends are kinda hindering him), but that's it. The author didn't tell us the story of whether Xiaobo can really meet Luo Qiqi or not. It makes me feel really sad and angry.

[collapse]

Regardless of the ending, I still like the story very much, because I really can relate with Luo Qiqi's life (considering how similar are her aspects to me, but then again, I guess Luo Qiqi's life is similar to everyone's life because it's a story to make you feel nostalgic).

If you're interested in this book, do give it a try. You can MTL-ed the rest of the chapters by visiting the raw website in one of the translators' site.

I read through almost at the end already, like 5 or so chapters left before it dawned to me, "Hey! I'm almost at the end, why can I not see the feels for a happy ending?" So I stopped for a bit, deeply wishing and hoping while checking on the comments. Then there! A comment said an open ending. And it broke my heart. I don't like creating a good happy ending as I cant really convince myself. I want to see it/read it with my own eyes for me... more>> to convince myself that happy endings do exist. Specially for this book, with the story line so relatable, with this kind of story you could find in most of us. What to do now?? Im feeling so down, I might need to gather all my courage to make me read this story through the end. Need to find my EXO babies to forget for now. SoSoSad. <<less

I really loved this story, its that good. One of the best ever cnovels I have read... warning about the open ending, that seriously messed me up. I just gonna hypnotize myself to create my own happy ending...

Spoiler

of the 2 MLs, I prefer Xiobo than LZJ because he is really sweet and cherishes her so much. I believe an ending w him will be a life of peace and happiness, compared to a roller coaster ride with LZJ.

This is the most beautiful story I have ever read on novel updates, and I am so glad it's being translated again. The narrative is nostalgic, realistic, sad, and colorful. I grew up in a very different situation to the narrator, but I'm still able to empathize with her: the way she sees and looks back on situations highlights how precious our youth is, and how we often don't appreciate things until they become memories from long ago. At the same time, however, the time and place this work is... more>> set in does make it unique, and I gett a good sense of what life might have been like at the time. Please, please read it: this is a masterpiece. <<less

Great translation of a beautiful story. It does leave you wanting more but in some ways the ending fits the story well. You can only go forward in life than live in the past. But your past definitely defines the you in the future.

I loved this novel. One of my favourites that I always love to re-read. I love how the author portrays nostalgic moments, it has the perfect amount of angst and romance. I did get frustrated at how the MC didn't communicate very well but I have to remember it's her personality! This novel touches my soul.

The title speaks for itself.

It made me realize a lot of things on my youth and regrets of should've done it another way. I was under the perspective of MC and I was greatly affected by her views. I was biased and hurt with her. I was satisfied reading this. ?

I just hoped there was an after story or another volume

I've read this novel a long time ago. I guess I just forgot to write a review.

I didn't really like the romance part. The slice of life part of this novel really made it's way into my heart.

I didn't really like the ending but it's also okay. I love the process towards the ending more. I find the bonds the MC made along the way really lovely.

This novel is very nostalgic. I feel like I might come back again to reread next time.

This novel is truly a tearjerker. I never really write reviews but I wanted to write for this one because I think that it would stay with me for a long time.

It made me wish for that pure and sincere love in our youth that I never got to experience.

I just finished reading the novel and I’m in a daze. I’m not sure if I should be happy or sad! All I know for sure is that it’s a good novel and it kept me interested till the very end. But because the ending is open ended, I feel hurt and disappointed because I want to see ML and FL reunion. At the same time I also like Xiao Bo, however, I see him more of an older brother to her and I don’t want to see him get... more>> rejected by FL. I have a feeling that that’s the way it’ll end for them bc she never saw him as anything more than that. Xiao bo is so sweet to her, he patiently taught her how to skate and he gave her the best gentleman dancing experience!!! Taking her shopping, dressing her up, and sweetly taught her how to dance! I mean that is just sweet beyond sweet!!! However, the one her heart desires is MC. Though he is wild and his strong presence made her feel insecure, he still truly loves her and showed her so much patience and persistence. Let’s face it the young FL was so cold and indifferent to him. Yet time and time again he continues to chase after her. Like I just couldn’t understand why she would refuse his birthday gift to her and made a big commotion over it. She love MC and even she mentioned that they’ll probably reunite in the future. <<less

One of the best!! And maybe because I'm on the point on my life where I feel like Qiqi. I like her personality for not allowing anyone to see her weakness.

I highly recommend this.

I feel that this novel is something that everyone should read at least once in their life.

I am a person born in the 2000s but Tong Hua's narration managed to teleport me to the 80s and know what childhood was like in those times. Something that I want to highlight is that this novel is BEAUTIFUL when it comes to narrating the feelings of our FL I can clearly feel why he makes certain decisions and why he thinks some things, I also love how realistic it is to read... more>> this about everything about the bullying that received in elementary/middle school

and his relationship with Zhang Jun.

In conclusion: read it, you will love it and it will be a reading you will always remember fondly.

The book is written so well I can't tell if this is fictional or an actual biography / nonfiction genre. I heard that this book is also somewhat famous in China and is determined as a "classic" (if this is the 1 I'm thinking of, just remembered Youth was in the name). However, I honestly wasn't very interested in reading the story as it wasn't my type of genre.

I registered an account here just to leave a review for this book. It touched me so much.

I can relate myself with the main character and her impusilve decisions because of her immaturity. The story shows the reaction of a youth to her environment. The perspective of people around her. I think many of us knows the feeling of wanting to belong in a group but somehow can't. Craving for that sense of belongingness.

Hahaha even saving seat for a friend brings so much emotion to me.

Youth really fades away fast... more>> and it is something we really can't go back to. We try to make the most out of our lives to not regret and live in the present but also worried for the future.

My only regret is the ending. I wished there is another book. Even if it is a fanfic ending whatever I will read it. I need to put an end so that I can rest and officially close this book. <<less
