It was Yan Zhaoge’s first time transmigrated into another world. He landed in a martial warrior civilization that was at the peak of prosperity. He ended up in the Divine Palace’s library, which collected and preserved the classics of the entire world from all fields of knowledge. However, a world-class calamity struck soon after, and even the Divine Palace was destroyed.

Yan Zhaoge’s soul once again transmigrated into another world. The twist was he arrived in the same world, except countless years have passed.

With his brain full of rare books and classics from the era of peak prosperity, Yan Zhaoge’s second transmigration to the present era was like a gamer who was used to playing hell mode suddenly finding himself playing the game on easy mode.

That was just way too awesome.

But before that, he would need to fix a problem.

“I’m not the main character? In fact, I’m actually the main character’s love rival and the antagonistic Mr. Perfect senior brother? This script is wrong!”

The first chapters are actually pretty good. The premise of having to watch out for the "protagonist" is pretty cool, and the MC is fairly entertaining in how he deals with not becoming a bad guy in his own story. However, as the story goes on, it begins to drag and become boring. It's initial premise is kind of just there, and it becomes a generic xianxia.

Lots of people grow on this novel after the first arcs, but I found it lost its originality and charm after the MC moves on to the upper realms. Basically, the whole ‘senior brother’ premise gets thrown out the window. The plot evolves into a more straightforward cultivation novel. The novel should be titled History’s Strongest Dude at that point.

On the other hand, the cast is genuinely likable, which is this novel’s saving grace. The MC has both brains and brawn, and the supporting characters are well-written, too. Overall, it’s... more>> still an enjoyable read, but a little tedious at times. <<less

All you guys need to realise that it's a s*upid argument to compare this novel wit other xianxia novels. It's a matter of taste. Thanks MC is not ret*rded like the rest of the MCs in all CN novels. Every action he takes is very logical.

He never actually complains that he has no luck infact all those treasures he has acquired have not fallen from the sky. He actually researches about it first. He doesn't recklessly charge at the problem but first gathers information which is quite logical.

Even if it... more>> appears to stray a bit after the first arc, it mocks every dumbfu*k of a protagonist in other CN novel at every turn.

It isn't nauseating to read like dumbsh*t works like Dragon Marked Wargod where every Fu*king high ranked saint or whatever the sh*t they are behave like hoodlums and deliquents caught off the street. In this we can see that the antagonist too have a story behind them and aren't just cannon fodder for the MC to kill. E.g. When madame Kang sacrifices her life to save her son's and how her husband goes in a mad rage to kill the MC.

Overall it's far better than those harem seeking, hypocrite, mass-mu*derin as*ho*es they sell you in other novels. <<less

This could be so much better but I find myself falling asleep and have to stop reading it. The reason being is that a few chapters can go by with just talking, thinking, looking... Some novels are fun with a lot of dialogue but the dialogues here are not interesting to me. I say try this novel out because different people enjoy different things, so you might like it.

Starts off really good, as the MC (who has an OP cheat) has to deal with others like him that resemble various CN protagonists. Then it goes off the rails for a while once it gets past the initial good bits. Becomes a bit too political and dry at the expense of story.

After that arc it does start to pick up into a really interesting cultivation novel. The type with a smart main character. Even if it has lost some of the originality of the beginning.

Supporting characters are a bit... more>> 2D, but it's still a good read. <<less

This book has become one of my favorites and as a long time reader, pushing through probably a half dozen of the most popular novels and currently following a dozen more I feel like I can add some credibility to my words. This is my first review and I'm only posting it because I wanted to thank the author for this story.

I'm not good at critiquing writing but I will say five things:

    1. The whole "main character" plot is really only maybe in the first 30-50 chapters, the book still references this scenario later on BUT IT IS NOT A MAIN PLOT DRIVER. So don't get upset if you start reading and after a few dozen chapters realize the book strays.
    1. One of my favorite things is the lack... more>> of plot holes. The author to my pleasant surprise keeps pretty good track of events and items gained throughout the book and closes them neatly or reminds the reader about them lest you don't forget. I can't say that it's perfect and there are zero plot holes but it's indeed better than the majority of novels in this category. This is one of the things that frustrates me a lot with these novels. Often it is even worse, with the author forgetting things happening earlier on and writing impossible scenarios conflicting with the earlier plot.
    1. The fights and story arcs aren't cookie cuter. It's very hard to write novels this size and not repeat, but the author clearly tries to make each situation unique. He kills off semi-main characters after having you grow attached to them, he has the maiden being rescued turn out to be a villain, he tries to add twists and turns to keep you guessing. The only thing you can always count on is the invincibility of the main character; you can be sure that he will always survive and walk away from any scenario gaining power or treasure, often both
    2. The author strives to many characters a unique personality. I really enjoy also how the female characters are written. They are unique personalities that evolve over time yet remain true to their character. They aren't simply written about for a few chapters until they become another faceless harem member.
    3. The author plans ahead and there is a lot of foreshadowing (relative to this category). Many novels feel like the author plans only a few chapters in advance.

This novel started out very promising (and boy do I still remember that, 570 chapters down the road) because of the inverted trope and the multiple villain protagonists. The worldbuilding is magnificent and the main character, since he was indeed still low in the power scale, out-schemed stronger cultivators and sects. It kinda went downhill from there after the first arc is over, though to be fair author-san did warn us (through MC's insistence about being low-key and lying low before being able to stand for himself) that someday he's... more>> gonna be the ultimate faceslapping godly martial saint. One thing I got to give though, he does that with style. I mean it. You know it's faceslapping but it's... so tastefully done it's all feel good, look good, who are you people??? <<less

Drop novel when it comes to Yan Zhaoge acquiring Dragon Palace, this going to be long, boring and repetitive from that moment. But until this...

This is great story, largely based on start it's based largely on deconstruction of common wuxia plots since MC is genre savvy, but then turned into "intelligent and loyal to his clan MC owning asses of characters, based on MC of other novels by use of either his skill, knowledge, cunning or mix of above mentioned traits and time and time again showing middle finder to... more>> vicious plots of other guys, saving world couple of times in process.

I shall mention that while it is largely based on common plots, characters (at least ones who's names readers bother to remember) is not shallow (with exception of if they are especially shallow because they are just s*upid) and not all plot really rotated around Yan Zhaoge (or his awesome father). He also nether trying to "dominate for lulz" and not above helping comrades, allies or vassals without seeking of gains.

While I do not read many chinese novels, only a couple of dozens, this one so far is my favourite. <<less

Wish for more stories like this, where the MC actually stands out and people accept it. Getting tired of the the stereo-typical MC getting betrayed or looked down by family/clan, only to come back super awesome, but then repeats the same plot, but with a school/sect, or town/city, and on and on and on so forth.

Like lets be honest. The writing is engaging, the characters interesting, the world setting is fun. Also Panda companion! CMON! So good.

A run of the mill xianxia with good enough writing to keep the fights interesting. If you are looking for depth or a new style of xianxia, look elsewhere.

A lot of other reviewers seem to criticize the author's switch from mocking tropes to following tropes. I honestly don't remember getting that vibe in the first place. The MC definitely makes frequent reference to tropes like reincarnators, ridiculous luck, and plot armor but the author doesn't really play it up for laughs. The MC definitely has a sarcastic tone when he... more>> mentions these things, but that's usually because he is either doing it better or annoyed by the effect on his plans. Frankly, I just read the story as a typical xianxia but with the MC being a more believable archetype. I like reading all the underdog xianxia stories, they're fun, but it's nice to finally read a story where the sect is actually giving proper support to their OP student from the start. That's what I read this novel as. It's a "What if the super-talented rich guy actually made proper use of his gifts?" kind of story. The petty sect politics aren't threatening to destroy the sect, the MC's father properly supports him, and the various rivals aren't able to constantly send cannon fodder to bully him for s*upid reasons. Just a typical xianxia with the MC playing a different role. If you want a comedic xianxia that pokes fun at the tropes, read "Elder Brother has a Pit in his Brain". The light novel only has 6 chapters translated but the manhua is very far along. Otherwise, just enjoy HSSB for what it is. <<less

Okay but lackluster. I quickly read some review saying it's hilarious and got the gist of it, I can tell you for sure this story doesn't have humour despite being a xianxia parody, I didn't even grin. The good thing is another point of view and some actual thinking from all the characters, like why did the elder help "cheat MC" (not JP cheat, just plot armor magical object) vs arrogant young master... though it is a bit changed as everyone schemes, even the good guys. The bad side of... more>> this parody is that though fights and cultivation system are... well lame. Techniques and fights are boring, not epic and awesome like in some good xianxia. It doesn't deserve 2 stars but I'm dropping it after rating a 3. <<less

Not dissatisfied because it's not a parody anymore after chapter 100, I'm just not enjoying it

All the fights are almost all the same

While the MC is smart in a sense he's basically the same as all other generic MCs.

Plot is meh, no downtime just all go go go. Boring is the final judgement

Many people are dissatisfied with HSSB because as the plot moves on, the summary doesn't quite reflect the content of the story anymore. If you came here hoping for the MC to constantly ridicule mainstream tropes, you probably won't survive after 100 chapters. There's a bunch of it in the beginning but it grows more subtle as the story goes on. Personally, HSSB is funny with an interesting cast that I actually really like (Feng Yunsheng and Ah Hu for example). One thing I always look forward to is how... more>> the MC shocks the world over and over again with his achievements.

Spoiler

Where did your "low-key, low-key" life go to, international celebrity sir?

Yan Zhaoge is hilarious, witty with a dash of ruthlessness and arrogance (all these can be seen from the golden chapters 174-175). He is OP and ridiculously so. He breaks through cultivation levels as if he's just leveling a lvl 1 pokemon to lvl 5, has backup plans for everything he does and collects his enemies' artifacts like they are pebbles by the roadside after thoroughly one-upping them so badly they can't find their faces anymore. Yan Zhaoge has both brawns and brains but he can be stuck in awkward situations when he runs his mouth, a meticulous planner and enjoys showing off. He does have a goal, besides maintaining his Mr. Perfect status, which is to discover about how the calamity came about which seems to be a pretty interesting part of the plot too.

Though really, it's all about taste. HSSB does get detailed in certain points (if you are not into that) and some arcs may feel a bit dragged out (and also, as usual, names and stuff gets a bit confusing). It would seem as if the MC does everything effortlessly because of the advantages he has which would seem hypocritical because he got reincarnated twice, is rich, is strong plus he's got a powerful father and subordinate (their interactions are really good) and if this is not your cup of tea, rather try something else rather than let the MC grate on your nerves. There's not much romance yet but there are hints of it. I appreciate that the author is willing to develop the relationship, no matter how slowly, before the characters devote themselves to each other. Plus, they have good chemistry.

Overall, I would rate it 4.5/5. HSSB is a very enjoyable read despite its flaws. <<less

For about the first 25 or so chapters if you don't pay too much attention, it's an amusing story about an MC that thinks he's been reincarnated as a minor villain in another MC's story, but in reality all the perks that the supposed "MC's" enjoy and that he dislikes them for having, he's already been enjoying to a far greater extent all along and continues to throughout the story though more subtly (the story doesn't call attention to it, it try's to play it of as simple background info,... more>> despite always drawing attention to the supposed "MC"'s perks)

Afterwards the MC just becomes a standard MC he's always right/good and anything he dislikes or that goes against him is inherently bad, so when he's outright corrupt against the innocent he's still good. Anyway the quality tanks from here on with the whole; an unjust antagonist that with MC like qualities shows up and is defeated leading to the MC improving his situation either through obtaining items or prestige thing repeating over and over as the MC slowly becomes an ever more boring MC to an ever more boring/repetitive story <<less

The situation of the MC places him as your typical evil, arrogant, young master. However, he is a nice person, that goes off-script, but sometimes situations, and misunderstandings make people believe that he arrogant, and petty, which I find hilarious. It reminds me a little of _My Death Flags Show No Sign of Ending_, but the MC does not go out of his way to be a douche. One of the early antagonists reminds me Lin Ming, which I also find funny as well. Hopefully the speed in updates picks... more>> up, because I can wait for the story to progress further. <<less

While not a lot of chapters have been posted as of now. I find the premise to be really interesting and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in a different type of xuanhuan novel (or rather a novel from a different point of view)

My thanks to the translator for picking up this light novel and I will eagerly wait for more translated chapters

This novel is almost as good as the autor's other novel : HN1F.
Almost. Period.

The first 1/3 of the novel is darn good. The 5-stars novel which fulls of plot twists. The good guys turn to be the bad guys because they have to. Side characters have their personalities. There're power play between sects. Each sect has its own agenda and goal. They are trying to back stab the others while, at the same time, cordially help their enemy sects like the brother-in-arm. Because if they don't, they die.

That's WHY this novel get very high star rating. Most reviewers just read this very first promising 1/3 chapters.

Then comes... more>> the 2nd third.

The author jumped from the heavenly altar to the 6-feet deep sh*t pit, trying hard to find idiot plots. There's no more senior brother, no more intelligent 3-D enemy. All the villains simply popped up, blew their fanfare of greatness for 1/2 chapter, being killed in the next 1/4 paragraph later. The rest of the chapter is for praising the greatness and coolness of the MC, who is floating 10000 miles high above all characters - out of orbit. The great weapons that MC try hard to build, even risking his life to strengthen it, forever disappear.

The duplicated girls who're supposed to hold the great secret - forever disappear.

But ArmiesOfArmies of IAmThevillainOfVillainWhoseNameWasKnownThroughAllWorlds suddenly appear, along with OneOfTheOriginalMartialArts and OneOfTheMoreOriginalMartialArts and OneOfTheOriginalOfOriginalMartialArts pop up like grass in the rainy season, to be stomped, cut, or neglected.

Better stop yourself after the first 1/3 to prevent your IQ deteriorated by the MC's (and the author's) coolness.

NO harem, NO romance, NO junior, NO plot twist, NO cultivation, NO opponent, NO fighting, NO combat, NO obstracle, NO exciting, NO unexpected. NO nothing worth reading.

But there are a lot of word
Spoiler

padding, paragraph padding, chapter padding. The padding of the last third of the novel can fill all the 37 the netherworlds and 16 heavens. The fighting is so full of meaningless names of scroll, action, powerplay, movement that could choke every readers

This is pretty odd story. It's definitely tier or two above the usual Qidian tr*sh but I can't exactly within good conscience call it a masterpiece.

If I had to compress the whole story into an understandable description it would be "three different styles of stories, first in order then slightly weaved together at end". That's how it felt like to me anyway. I'll put the explanation between spoiler tags.

Spoiler

The beginning of the story was like a superbly interesting parody that made fun of the usual xianxia tropes, we had the standard young masters etc. Fun clichés that came in form of different opponents that MC decimated. The middle of the story somehow went into a completely reverse direction, actually just becoming the standard xianxia which was mocked before. Later on the story it naturally continued the xianxia trope of higher worlds etc. But it also introduced basically all the Chinese mythology elements as well, rather unoriginally too.

[collapse]

Tbh, I'm rather uninterested in further deeply evaluating standard things such as plot or world building. I guess I could say that they both were rather decent. World building was more situational / milieu focused and not so much actually helping giving birth to some interesting images. The plot was there and it felt like there was some thought behind it, however it was still rather unsatisfying- the conclusions to the greatest mysteries in the book for example were solved very quickly and anticlimactically.

The best parts about this book for me were the solutions the MC came up for the situations he was in. Often time it seemed like a style of 'hindsight intelligence' writing, where our main character was lured into something, but it turned out that he had actually intelligently prepared something against such thing- and there even been some foresight before for the reader. Such things were done successfully all the way towards the end of the mid section of the book and remained enjoyable. Unfortunately this failed to carry towards the end.

So, conclusions: This is infinitely better than the average crap QI pushes now days. Definitely give it a try. It is however not for everyone and might get tedious due to the later elements introduced in story. Even I had some trouble with names and titles etc. I personally had slightly deeper feelings for this book as I was one of the earliest readers which helped me push on. Oh yeah last thing, I almost forgot, translation was better than good. Bad chapters with subpar translation, due to changing of translators, could be counted with fingers of one hand; so no worries there. 4/5 Stars. <<less

80% praising MC 20% plot.

MC is always in the right time place and mind. Rest are in peanut gallery shocked at MC's awesomeness.

Every chapter has atleast 70% praising MC's greatness and how smart and knowledgeable he is, there's no hardship no stress at all.

... more>> Actually I feel like rooting for those protag candidates in the novel, that's how nauseating MC's persona is made to be.

Like he just has to have the last laugh in every situation doesn't matter how petty it is. Like someone benefitted from an artifact but author later has to stress how "MC has benefited more! Triple more than him/her from it, cause he is awesome".

Ps: I seriously feel weird how people can like reading this for long, even portraying yourself as the MC it is just too overboard. <<less

The beginning was pretty good, even though I've seen many novels with similar premises, this one pulls it off fairly well. The humor is also pretty good, also at the beginning. However it rapidly becomes mediocre at best after that.

First, the story starts off with the main character being the villain. This, however, is almost immediately disregarded, as only the "hero" in the story treats him as a villain. The story's humor involves the main character poking fun at cliches that are usually in other cultivation novels. In fact, after... more>> around chapter one hundred the entire premise that made this novel unique is completely gotten rid of. After this, it rapidly becomes a mediocre novel.

However, there are some flaws that if it weren't for the story having a good premise, I would rate two stars or lower. First of all, cultivation in this novel is kind of lackluster, and the author seems to be keeping parts of it kinda vague. For example, the main character will cultivate a technique, gain a treasure, develop unique x, etc, and the author will barely touch on what it does compared to your average cultivator. Second, not much worldbuilding is done. The initial place the main character stays in is extremely small. Because the main character is already in a lofty position, not much changes in regards to this. Furthermore, fights in this novel are very stale. First, the enemy (immoral, unreasonable standpoint, overbearing, arrogant, etc) will make some flashy attack. The author will then, clearly state, that the main character is not moved by this flashy attack, and will counter it effortlessly. After the author milks the surrounding characters for lines such as "everyone was shocked" "mc's supporters praise him" things such as that. After that, the enemy will once again make an even flashier attack. Again, the author will state how the main character remains expressionless. This repeats itself quite a bit in the story.

Overall, decent novel early on. Rapidly deteriorates into a mediocre cultivation novel, if not below-average. <<less
