Just the number of pills he eats to level up is enough to fill the entire universe. Then there are no negative effect because more PILLS. Like the only thing interesting is the dao parts. Just pills and a forgotten treasure trove.

At the age of 35 I've become so picky after reading too much Chinese novels, I hated the laziness in their works. I keep asking myself why they treat their audience like 9 years old child.

I've lost any hope for change... Until.. I read this masterpiece.

In order to write well, you have to have a range of other skills in place first. They are the underlying foundation. Once you have those other skills, good writing represents their combined result: the pinnacle of their positive effects.

When I read a great piece... more>> of writing, I know the writer has those foundational skills. I will only list a few off the top of my head: empathy (which is an appreciation for what your audience is thinking and feeling), attention to detail, a broad general knowledge, logic, clarity of thought, persuasiveness, the ability to critique your own work (also called a crap detector), an appreciation for rules and the smarts to break them, self-discipline, the ability to prioritise, a sensitivity to cliché and stereotype.

Er gen has those qualities and for that I appreciate him as a great unique writer <<less

ISSTH is absolutely one of the best novels I have read. It is the only novel where I actually teared up during specific parts of the story. The MC (Meng Hao), as well as the bigger supporting cast of characters, are all well-made and have interesting points that help to identify and differentiate each one (which is one of the most important things to have, in my opinion, when the novel spans over 1500 chapters). The MC himself is an extremely memorable character, simply because of his true purpose in... more>> life and his bashful smile. The world is incredibly profound and the overall universe is quite interesting. I'll give a little more detail about what I mean below, and then give some pros and cons for the overall story.

Spoiler

The MC progresses through the story in a steady, and sometimes even a slow, manner. Each and every decision he makes, every place he goes, and every situation he experiences is described well and is extremely detailed. Meng Hao learns early on that his moral standards for the cultivation world are too high, but throughout the novel, he still maintains some semblance of his bottom line in everything he does. Unlike other super powerful characters, there is no harem in this novel; Meng Hao is a faithful guy, and as such, the romance in the novel isn't nauseating or over-the-top like in many others. Meanwhile, the world itself is much larger than it seems in the beginning, and as the MC travels to new places, it doesn't seem out-of-place. The cultivation levels are pretty standard for a chinese novel, and even more so for Er Gen novels: Qi Condensation, Foundation Establishment, etc. The levels get a little muddled much later in the novel, but it's to an acceptable level. It is helpful to read Er Gen's previous novels to understand a few references and get a general feel for the power levels, but it can also become confusing considering they're not exactly the same universe, so my best advice for that is: read this as if they have no relation at all.

[collapse]

Pros:

    • The world/universe is creative and original
    • The MC and his actions are entertaining and even funny occasionally
    • The supporting characters have their own unique personalities (i.e. Lord Third and Lord Fifth)
    • It's a roller coaster of moods and emotions (comedy, seriousness, sadness, contentment,...)
    • Each person/place/situation is well-explained
Cons:

    • Some parts drag out much more than they probably should
    • Lots of unexplained minor points that never get answered (but they're minor so it doesn't change much)
    • Lots of characters/skills/items show up only to be forgotten quickly (but this is typical for long novels)
    • Later into the story, the interesting supporting characters lose meaning and aren't featured because they can't grow as fast as the MC (again, very typical of such stories)
    • Lots of references to other novels, which don't hit the mark if you haven't read the others by Er Gen
Overall, this is a must read in my opinion. The story is great, the universe is novel, and the MC is one-of-a-kind.

Spoiler

Have faith in the Lord Fifth, gain eternal life. When Lord Fifth appears, who dares to cause strife!

Good novel, kinda generic start, but a little later it just gets better and better. Er Gen had quite a lot of stuff foreshadowed in the mid-story, however, near the end the quality kinda deteriorates and it

Positive aspects of the novel were the great cultivation system and the comedy, however the negative ones were the world building (i just can't properly imagine the Mountain surrounded by sea in the vacuum of space) , borderline Gary Stu MC and the romance (don't expect too much romance in any of... more>> Er Gen's works). <<less

I've read World of Cultivation, Against the Gods, RTW, Coiling Dragon, Mushoku Tensei and lots more and thoroughly enjoyed them.

I've ran out of novels to read and tried this one, this is a very boring and bland novel, every chapter is a pain to read, I encourage myself to continue reading by reading positive reviews hoping it will get better but it's such a slog to continue...

Theres just no life and enjoyment in reading this, every chapter is drawn out, anyways I'm out and done with this...

Update: I've finished it... more>> finally.

  1. If you get through the first few hundred boring, chase-filled chapters you will get to the conning arcs which were enjoyable.
  2. So many techniques and items were just dropped and forgotten. just like that.
  3. On a whole it's a worthwhile read, the plot is clearly planned but there just so many loose ends or just forgotten character and items.

Hello my fellow readers. I just want to make this exceptional Xianxia a more positive review unlike my fellow reader pickles.

However, I do warn that if you aren't prepared to read a 1000+ chapter story, I suggest reading smaller Xianxia or LN. ISSTH is a long read that requires the reader to understand both the terms used as well as to be able to remember minor facts or tidbits from earlier chapters that may become major plot points in later volumes.

ISSTH uses DAO as it's central explanation for the use... more>> and supply of Daoist Magic in the ISSTH world, however the interpretation of DAO is complex and simple at the same time. This this requires a free and open mind to when reading ISSTH, as this is not only talking about fantastical battles and seemingly larger than Life worlds but also the interpretation of how one should live their own lives and yet also connects strict and Confucius beliefs to that understanding.

ISSTH is more than just the sum of it's parts. And whilethe reviewer pickles does make a point in the convenience of how the Meng Hao is able to survive perilous situations, Er Gen does it in a way where it's understandable and that Meng Hao doesn't get out with just a simple scratch on the cheek. To the point where he even dies, yet still survives due to a major plot point. And even in situations where Meng Hao could easily win, there is always a counter balance to his often OP stat, i.e a larger force or figure that equals or even looks down upon Meng Hao's strength.

Pickles likes to point out that Meng Hao of the character archetype, Mary or in his words "Marty" Sue. An abhorrent character type that can be described as is often well beloved by everyone they meet without exception regardless whether the character in question has even been met yet. Meng Hao isn't like that, though there was a portion that of time where he was in disguise.
Spoiler

If you need specifics, this is when he was on Planet South Heaven's Pill Cauldron Sect (or something along those lines) or when he becomes the Prince of the Blood Demon Sect (though only being accepted into the clan after he knocked or in Meng Hao's case "blow up" some heads together.

[collapse]
It is due to how Meng Hao acts and treats people that more than often gets him in trouble or raises ire and sometimes hate in not just people but sometimes even entire factions and Sects. Er Gendoes a great job of solidifying what makes Meng Hao who he is. A man who if you give him gold and a measure of Goodwill upon meeting him, will treat you as if you were a long lost sibling, even going out of his way to save your life if he is able to. As well as someone who places family and friendship, if you are able to keep it, on top of his own safety. Yet is a character who is also defined by how miserly and greedy he is when shown the sight of even the most cheapest of objects. Most of all, Meng Hao keeps his promises no matter how long it takes him to be able to accomplish the promise in the first place, so pay attention to when Meng Hao says he promises something because you know he'll do it even at cost of life and limb!

Other Reviewers like to point out how Meng Hao becomes rather OP rather quickly or that he has plot armor due to some hidden fact or bloodline that was hidden from him. Er Gen points this out rather solidly in that the path that Meng Hao treads is often taken by the fool Hardy as it is the most dangerous and trial filled route to take. Even to the point where even if you do take this route and achieve greatness it doesn't come without cost and Meng Hao himself has to prepare fifteen to sixteen steps ahead. And even these preparations can be overturned by simple or extremely powerful counter balances.

Of course, the development of Meng Hao is exceptional but not perfect. <<less

This is the first and only review I'll do for a novel on this site. This is easily one of the best books you'll find here, and I'll tell you why.

Early on in the story you have Meng Hao, he is a weak person, rather childish, he has a cheat but its nothing much, just enough to set him out from the rest. Meng Hao, he loves money and swindling people which gives a good laugh and later on he still does that. Though these aren't my main reasons for... more>> loving this story. 1. Is the beauty pill that he always gives to xu wing, its kind of a running joke, and even after hundreds of years, she still has the pill as a sort of remembrance.

2. From the beginning to the end, Meng Hao matures incredibly, he is no longer that naive little kid, but a powerful and jaded expert near the top. In the last two hundred chapters when he gives treasures to his apprentice, he even looks back on his life and says that he used to have an extreme fondness for treasures in his youth, but they don't seem very important anymore. <<less

Are you looking to lose your life for a good 2-3 weeks maybe even a month of reading? Then you have come to the right place! A story about a once young weak scholar travelling his path to becoming an immortal. A fleshly body that is stronger than everyone else's nobody can match Meng Hao's fleshly body. Gaining the inheritance of many powers (not instant OP power ups) More like the blood mask where Meng Hao actually needs to increase his cultivation stage to use the stronger techniques without them... more>> destroying his body from the strain.

A legend among legends. You've probably read other series like ST (Stellar Transformations) WDQK, ATG, BTTH, CSG, MGA. Unlike those stories Meng Hao truly STARTS WITH NOTHING. No overpowered family (Over powered parents but they don't show up till chapters 800+ too much information to type without spoiling for new people looking at the reviews) As I was saying Meng Hao STARTS WITH NOTHING. Meng Hao gradually works himself up. Gaining the Demon Sealers Heritage, Blood Mask, Perfect Foundations, Perfect Fleshly Body,

Not only does Meng Hao start with nothing Meng Hao makes his own legend. Making his own OP techniques that simply destroys everybody in comparison becoming a TRUE IMMORTAL. And having a True Immortal Fleshly Body. Wiping out all sects and enemies that dares to offend him/friends/wife. Living life to the utmost he can.

Are you ready for a long ass read that will R.I.P your life for at least 1 month depending on your reading pace? Well you've found the right book to do so. Truly if you have a job do yourself this favor. Read ISSTH at home and don't pull all nighters to read the series and become screwed over for the work day coming up. <<less

I'd stayed away from ISSTH until now, thinking that it'd be too intellectual for me. Oops. Well, ISSTH is a cultivation novel like any other, sort of. The problem is, how well-written ISSTH is depends on which part of it you're looking at. At its peak, it's the genre's exemplar; at its worst, it may not be worth reading.

Book 1: At first, the series is nothing special, and has as many inconsistencies and inanities as any average wuxia. But from around the fortieth chapter, the story starts getting unique and... more>> interesting. Er Gen then spends a while being uncertain about where he wants to take the story, and he doesn't really find his way until partway into the second book.

Books 2 and 3: The pinnacle of ISSTH; these books are why the series could be considered a masterpiece. Five stars. Plot advancement in nearly every chapter; excellent character development that's linked together; outstanding fighting scenes, quickly and efficiently done; usually serious but badass or funny when it needs to be... for these two hundred-some chapters, the story is epic, the epitome of all cultivation stories.

Books 4 and 5: The novel begins slipping, and its intelligence steadily disappears. The plot advancement, character development, etc. occur inconsistently, fragmented by unnecessary and illogical events. This culminates in a series of very long, massive, increasingly s*upid conflicts that are full of contradictions. Where another novel might rely on tournaments, ISSTH comes to rely on large-scale battles and wars, even though their very existence is illogical, and everyone fights for days in the background as they wait for the MC to break the balance. While before there'd been excellent one-on-one fights, which weren't milked and rarely took more than a chapter or two, the logic and pace you'd grown to appreciate disappear. One cultivation level becomes much like another, the MC is no longer able to use his inheritances wisely, the Dao gives way to pointless power comparisons, and inconsistencies become the name of the game. Eventually, plot advancement is drawn out and character development becomes both predictable and forced; by comparison, though books 4 and 5 are more than twice as long as 2 and 3, they contain less meaningful evolution. The rating falls to four, then three stars during this time. <<less

Deathblade is one of the most consistent translators of all time. For that he is also one of my favorite translators and he's part of the reason why I stick with this novel for so long. If not for deathblade I would have given up on the story much sooner.

ISSTH is a really good novel. There's little reason to doubt why it's in the top 5. Unfortunately I don't agree with the ranking and here's why:

Storywise it adheres to xianxia tropes. Er Gen is like a better version of IET,... more>> but that's not saying much. To be specific, the sequence always from beginning to the end of the novel is that our protagonist is always fighting against his enemies that are of higher cultivation that is "supposably" rare but that said higher cultivation will always appear in prolific numbers later on as the protagonist advances in cultivation level. Unlike IET who shoehorns higher tier cultivation levels without any backdrop history and very suddenly, Er Gen constantly alludes and drop hints that there are cultivation levels that are above what our protagonist can imagine at the time, so when he does eventually reach that level, it's to be expected and it's relative to the plot. Call me nitpicking but for me it's sometimes unbearable to keep reading the story because Deathblade or Er Gen always include these three phrases (paraphrasing) :

"Coughing up blood."
" 'Character's name's' snorted."
"Waving finger."

I can only remember these few off the top of my head however I'm sure that there's many more the art constantly getting repeated and quite honestly annoy the heck out of me. There's only so many times that I read that someone's either waving their finger or coughing up blood or snorting and I wish deathblade to come up with better phrasing or words considering he is at liberty of translating the text. <<less

My favorite, I love the storyline, I love how well thought everything is, it just gives off a really mystical vibe or something, you see him grow from the start and encounter a lot of good fortune, and as time passes you remember what happened "a few hundred years ago" as if you were actually there, it makes many references to the past like a hundred chapters before and it's just the best for me, I've gotten bored in some parts but soon recovered as the story continued, I've learned... more>> to control myself but in the first few hundred chapters it was just so funny that I would start to clap, not cringey jokes, Er Gen just really has a nice humor, it makes the reader very content with the development, not in an annoying way that everything goes well for Meng Hao, he collects good fortune but in a cool and funny way. <<less

The first time I read this book I was blown away cause the main character was this failure of a scholar who gets thrown into the cultivation world and it was so different from all the other novels. Started off great - interesting MC, devious plots/ploys, good characters all round - it was good. Was a joy to read and it kept me on the edge of my proverbial seat. However, somewhere after the 3rd book (c313)...

Spoiler

MC just goes f*ck it all - why? Why not? he says. f*ck my comrades, f*ck logic, f*ck plot, f*ck everything, I want ice cream

[collapse]

In short - many illogical points in the story occur and what was once exciting and unpredictable became the greatest Plot-MC-ex-machina ever... I guess I should've known - he's the author of Xian Ni after all and that also turned to cr*p rather quickly (in my case c200+)

Just wanted to write this since there are way too many positive reviews. I also have big qualms with regurgitation of words/terms/plot every 2-3 paragraphs just to fill up space - but I won't be reading it further so I guess it doesn't matter. <<less

Fun fun fun.

Seriously though. This is worth the effort. Plot elements aren't left behind. Characters we met a few hundred chapters ago aren't forgotten. His friend's are still there, albeit with a smaller presence, but they're given the potential to kind of keep up.

It's a great story to binge read and is definitely one of the top tear xianxia. It hits all the right notes with me and doesn't include the things I hate.

The MC starts off as a normal mortal and just gets carried to a sect to train. Through hard work he starts the path of an immortal and begins cultivating. From there he displays a few characteristics. He is quit witted and intelligent. He often solves his problems by out witting people or deceiving them. He's also greedy for money... more>> or spirit stones. He lived his life poorly so he is only truly happen when he is "rich". While his greed doesn't motivate him necessarily, it does play a large part in his personality and actions. Overall though, he just wants to be stronger. ISSTH does use a few tropes, but I think they are all used quite nicely without being so cliche. Meng Hao gets a copper mirror that has duplication powers and scares beasts. During his weaker phases, this is quite handy, but later on it really doesn't matter much. Especially because Meng Hao levels up to be more powerful than copper mirror (in my opinion). He doesn't have some old wise sage to teach him discreetly. He isn't afraid to kill, and he doesn't seek out situations that would lead to a slaughter. Meng Hao just wants to cultivate (and get spirit stones) and he will end anyone who gets in his way.

The romance in this is very subdued. It's a slow burn that takes time to evolve. When Meng Hao and the one he loves finally get together, you really feel supportive of their relationship. There are definitely several possible people for Meng Hao to be with, but this isn't a Harem type story. The female characters are simply there like the males and aren't used as possible romantic interests. There are always girls that are in awe of him, but there are also guys like that.

There characters are usually different and fully developed, even the villains. You go from hating those Wang people or other chosen or whatever sect special person to pitying them. Meng Hao just shines and makes everyone else seem worse. Most characters get their reasonable back story, disappear for awhile doing their own cultivation, then reappear when important. Every person who shows up has their own role, they're not there just to drop names and create conflict for an arc.

The world building is also great. Meng Hao has successfully traveled all around the world and is just now starting to leave the planet. This is like Linley of Coiling Dragon leaving their realm to go to the God realm. Every land is fleshed out with different cultures and techniques. It's a really interesting place to explore. Meng Hao has to keep traveling first because he is searching for his place to settle, then because he needs to grow and get stronger. If I had to describe Meng Hao's cultivation in one word, it would be "Perfection!"

So if you want to read a long xianxia, this is definitely a top choice. Why aren't you already reading, really! <<less

I can confidently say that the rating below 4 were given by people who did not read past chapter 200. I have to say that book 3 of issth is one of the best books I have read.

Book 1 is like the prologue. Book 2 is like build up but in book 3 the real story starts. How every chapter in the book is planned beautifully to serve a purpose in the future is amazing.

Its unexpectedly really funny while at the same time it can make you emotional. In most... more>> novels the side characters are ignored but there is actual character development with the MC as well as his companions maturing.

ISSTH is one of the best novels there is and is a recommended read. The story itself would give you an emotional roller-coaster ride. The MC is a great character that pursues training to the ultimate level having started from nothing.

The story does not only focus on fighting but also focuses on other avenues such as pill refining and such and constantly brings newer types of plot which is refreshing to read.

The only tiny downside would be the romance of the story which seems to be basically going nowhere with... more>> loads of girls just left hanging by the MC. <<less

Okay, I’ve two negative things to say (subjective opinions!!) about this story, and if you can overlook these, you’ll have a hard time finding a better story. Do please note, that I could not find ANY other flaws, thus cudos to Er Gen and Deathblade!

1) The fights are straight up horrendous; all you get told is that he flies / teleports next to his opponent and they die from a fist. They don’t put up any resistance, because they simply cannot. By no time after the first book, does fights... more>> involve skill, purely surperior strength or items (or OP people helping the MC out when he gets in over his head. Has to be said that they help for legitimate reason). Am I the only one that thinks that were power rules suprime, techinques and martial arts are important? 2) He very quickly obtains a ludicrous amount of broken items which he then unlocks the power to use over time. In the first book, he obtain two items; one (the mirror) which gives him basically infinite money which he neglets to use/abuse and the other a sword which immortals dreads.

2, 5) This isn't exactly an issue, however I find it hard to justify. The cultivation of the MC isn't earned, it simply just drops dead on his head. Examples of this is the story in Patriach Reliance's cave, the time spend in the vulcano (The blood Immortal), the five element-spirit severing etc. It sort of lacks the 'earned' / 'comprehension-based' aspect of cultivation, such as there is in Coiling Dragon. Cultivation is purely based on 1: Eat pills or 2: Receive gifts 3: You're now stronger than your opponents., which I personally dislike.

Outside of those two aspects, I’d rate the story 5/5.

However including those aspects, I’d at best give it 3, 5 / 5, since it is a Light Novel under the genre of Martial Arts and Action. <<less
