Well-known Composer Fang Zhao was in the most glorious stage of his career, when the Apocalypse arrived; After finally experiencing the bitter difficulties of a thousand dangers, when the Apocalypse was simmering down to an end, he collapsed; When he opened his eyes, he was reborn in a New World, 500 years after the end of the apocalypse, in the body of a student who had been dumped barely after graduation, who had been cheated of his hardwork barely after he started working…

The World of the Future, Virtual Idols PK Real Idols

“Every time background music plays in my head, I feel like there is nothing to be afraid of.” —Fang Zhao

Toward the end of the apocalyptic period, Fang Zhao lost his life. However, instead of dying, he found himself 500 years later in the body of a young and aspiring composer who shared the same name. Having received a second chance at life, Fang Zhao sets out to achieve the previous owner’s dreams.

Armed with the experience of living through an apocalyptic age and his profession as a composer before that period, Fang Zhao uses his talent, wits, and knowledge to make his mark in the entertainment industry of the future.

The story was going perfectly and had both interesting characters and the story. MC in particular definitely stands out amongst the reincarnated MC. Usually reincarnated MC usually turn into 15-years old harem protagonists that think like those of his new body age... other than being overpowered and having great knowledge they are pretty much normal. Here however it really feels that MC is the same MC that we learned about in the first chapter and even if he was now 22 years old living in completely different environment, his 100... more>> years long experience definitely stick into him. As he is reincarnated he doesn't recive any super powers or anything but all he accomplishes comes from his skills that he earned like "any normal person".

Sadly at some point the story starts going off track really far. MC used to be music composer and when he reincarnated into new body he started off with that and that portion of story is just great... best off all it makes perfect sense that as someone who lived through "that era" he would make perfect musical pieces that would reflect that era. Sadly while music remains the front note for the most part we suddenally get "dog days" arc, which was still alright as it was MC's dog being in spotlight while MC was doing his composing in the background. Still at point which I reach and started to write review, the story suddenally switched to gaming for whatever reason. I understood MC wanting to blow off the steam perfectly and wanting to relive the old days by killing some things but just few chapters ago it turned into MC inviting players to form up a team for the gaming competitions. In this moment I am like WTF? I personally enjoy gaming storylines a lot even if most of them are flawed, speaking of e-sport though the king's avatar one of best stories on this website. So yea, I like those stories... STILL what I don't like is that the story that had little to do with gaming suddenally became a gaming storyline. Such sudden shift is really too much. Really what is with those stories that are about music that suddenally turn into wrong direction... last time I read a great storyline whose 100 chapters was about young MC introducing piano into the world and becoming famous by stealing real world pieces but after 100 chapters it suddenally turned into typical magic world storyline similar to Warlock of the Magus World.

It's a shame really because there aren't many good series like this that are being translated... the only two I can think of is the god of cooking and I am really superstar... in any case hopefully this gaming part won't last long. <<less

I love the MC's character and that most other characters do have brain.

Though I can't rate this 5 star because this story is... too safe? The general feeling is more like slice-of-life's easy storyline. There is no antagonist nor hurdle which would lead to a satisfying read when the MC solve them.

tl;dr : Good MC, story is a bit dull but passable as casual read/time waster.

I was not expecting much from this when I started. I mean, what do apocalypse and monsters have to do with being a composer...? And then all this digital idol stuff... I came here after reading god of music and top management, I'm looking for more human drama, right?

*Update as of chapter 93: The new arc is really boring... downgrading to a 3 star. It doesn't make any sense either. All about the dog and shepherding and the music just got left by the wayside for a while. Hope it... more>> gets better again....

Concept

... despite that, I gave it a try, and colour me impressed! The author is witty and, more importantly, creative. He comes up with really interesting situations that you aren't expecting and then delivers with a badass MC exceeding people's expectations model.

Spoiler

For example, he gets a bit wacky with his song ideas, the hehe or the tree with the epic music. Some of it comes off as a bit forced and strictly speaking, I prefer the delivery of the more vanilla top management or god of music. Still, this is definitely more creative in some ways and the writing style of the author keeps the series grounded and not too unbelievable. Another spark of creativity is the pressure through praise tactics of his competitors, which I quite enjoyed.

[collapse]

Characters

Also important to me, the MC doesn't have 'cheat' abilities. This is a reincarnation type series, but no added superpowers (as of where I am, though I'm wondering where curly hair is going to go)

And talking about curly hair, I really like the supporting cast. Not only are many of the singers male, which is a nice reprieve from the plastic, somewhat harem nature of the korean equivalents, but Superstars of Tomorrow also has some interesting characters from older generations and social classes who I am finding quite real and a cute dog.

Setting

The setting is fresh, if not unique, mixing together sci-fi and corporate culture with a few chinese social details.

One of the reasons I give this 4 stars instead of 5 though is that I'm still not sure about the use of the setting. Even if this apocalypse happened, it's weird that it's so popular in media.

There are also some weird time related inconsistencies seeing that 500 years went by, but the author treats it like 100 years (even considering the changed lifespans).

I have some other quibbles with the setting. The author seems to have not thought of a number of things, one major one being AI. The sci-fi setting is fun, but somewhat lacking in depth.

Humour

One of the great things about this series is the comedy. Tons of hilarious moments in here while avoiding any slapstick. For the English version, this is partly because of the skill of the translators who managed to translate the humour, which leads me to...

Writing style/translation

The writing style is good and I'm particularly impressed by the translator or proofreader at Qidian International who has not only delivered good grammar but also somehow managed to get some witty wordplay in there from time to time.

The use of the right word at the right time can really make or break a scene and Qidian is doing a good job in the English version. I'm not sure if this is the translator finding just the right ways to capture the ideas in English, or the proofreader's creativity to bring the most out of the English, but either way, great job!

On top of that quality, release rate is fast.

Have to mention the $ figures though... either there was lots of inflation or there's some kind of exchange rate that's not being applied. All the amounts seem like they would work if divided by 10. <<less

Sometimes you just want a story where the MC is s*upidly OP (though not s*upid himself) but also is hiding this as a secret. The ending was a little weird, but I recommend reading this if you want a good time binge reading.

I read triggerk's review as well as those of others who rated this novel low, and I deem it necessary to address a few points. Take note that I finished reading this novel a few years ago. I came back this time to refresh my memories of this novel, so I may remember things wrongly.

PS: triggerk's deep mastery over English is honestly admirable, you have my respect 🛐

To start this off, just as triggerk said, the pre-apocalypse theme is pretty relevant in the story. How relevant, you may ask? It... more>> is *SO⁹⁹⁹* relevant. My vocabulary is quite shallow, forgive me, so I have to resort to using exponent to highlight the sheer importance of the pre-apocalypse in the whole story. Everyone's been given some important contexts in the synopsis. These contexts gave hints about what the readers should expect in the story. If you failed to catch them, I'll put them here so that you don't expect the wrong things from this novel: (a) Fang Zhao is a composer; (b) the world experienced an apocalypse; and (c) Fang Zhao died when the apocalypse is approaching its end. The focus on his pre-apocalypse occupation in the synopsis may have veered your expectations in the wrong path, but it is the three abovementioned contexts that shed light on the premise of the story. (1) As a renowned composer pre and during the apocalypse, with unfinished music upon his death, music was one of Fang Zhao's regrets. (2) Witnessing how the world will change after the apocalypse is another given that he died just a bit short to witnessing their hard-won peace. These two things are exactly what the story is about. If I'm not clear enough, the story will NOT only focus on Fang Zhao's background as a composer, instead, the story will also show the readers how *things* from pre-apocalypse change 500 years in the future. Fang Zhao died when apocalypse is NEARING its end, expect him to be extremely good in battles and anything military related. Consequently, the story will, as expected, include military. After all, the trauma as a survivor of apocalypse is there and that's what will make him distinct from others. The peace was achieved with every one of his comrades pooling their strength and not by Fang Zhao alone, expect that as Fang Zhao revisits his tragic past, he will also encounter people or things related to his comrades.

This is where I don't agree with triggerk. Music, entertainment (music, acting, games, etc.), and military, together in one story, is a reasonable development for the story. There's no way any reader is valid for expecting the story will be about idols and such. If you are surprised why there are mentions of acting and games, you just have to realize that the future always seeks to understand the past (this is the case even in reality, we have history classes). Not to mention the story is futuristic. Acting and games are some good mediums to showcase the life during apocalypse. Fang Zhao personally experienced the apocalypse, acting and games (again, related to apocalypse) of course will be dominated by him. But is he a Gary Stu? Certainly not! He is not flawless nor is he perfect. It's just that he alone has the access to the complex emotions, most reliable information, and the expertise over pre-apocalypse technologies so he dominated the scene. Let Fang Zhao act a man in love and the old man will certainly not make it past the audition for the role lolol.

Old man Fang Zhao treating ALMOST everyone else like a child is befitting of his character. Only the world evolve through out the passing time. As for Fang Zhao himself, all through out the story he was JUST in the process of adapting to the changed world. You will understand what I mean once you read the part where Fang Zhao told the readers how is he making use of the music in his ears, the orchestra in his mind (it doesn't stop playing by the way). It is reasonable that he has the personality of an old man given that he died when he was of old age and that the 500 years that have passed was beyond him. For Fang Zhao, the memories of the past was as if the happenings of the night before he slept. Should the readers be expecting him acting younger than he originally was? Certainly, no!

The world building was done impeccably by the author, again I have to disagree with triggerk. Do not be befuddled as to why the dogs, sheeps and farms, outer space enter the scene. Remember the contexts I spoke about a while ago? How about all the information I explained so far? They entered the scene to contribute to the contexts and plots, introducing the whats, whys, hows, and etc. Of the apocalypse that transpired 500 years ago, as well as the changes and development that happened years after the apocalypse up until the present times. Even the division of the territories is the lens to understanding the past and present. Like why is there a territory that has a culture of dog shepherding the sheeps, the dog arc that triggerk has mentioned? The present is tied to the past. It tells a story that originates from the people who fought hard for the peace. This sounds confusing, but any more blabbering will be spoiling you a lot of things. You just have to understand that the development in the present times is closely tied and is influenced by those who brought forth the new era.

Why are there 12 continents with four of them being special? If my memory serves me right, one special continent is the business hub (the farm where the dog arc transpired). There is an impression in my mind that the author have explained it. I have to reread the story to be sure.

Cultures of other countries are not lost in the story, I remember there is a character who is of royal descent with western features.

If I must say something that I found unsatisfactory in the story, I find the ending disappointing. I wasn't and still not prepared for Fang Zhao's journey to end early. I mean, the ending isn't bad. All the knots were untangled, even the mystery behind his going into the future. But, I personally think that the story can still tell a few hundred chapters worth of narrative, especially about the relationship of Fang Zhao and his dog.

Well, I remember this story in a good light. I even came here to reread it, and spent almost two hours writing this review. I don't know if I'm just biased or what but this story is worth 5★ imo. <<less

Another masterpiece by Lazy Cliche!

The post apocalyptic theme is perfect with the MC's previous life talent as a composer showing itself in the new world. Along with the MC's enhanced body, he travels to different planets and explores the universe battling pirates and aliens. (Ok I'm exaggerating:))

It's more slice of life though the action and adventure does make it even more worth reading with never a boring moment!

This was one of the novels I religiously read when I was young. I remember loving it so much and getting fascinated by the different concept of world building it offered me, as a young reader who mostly consume stereotypical highschool love stories. And now I can't remember the details about it, but I can't forget the wonders and excitement I used to feel whenever I was reading this.

That is all I just visited again to leave this review here. Though I understand this may not be everybody's cup of... more>> tea, but I wish them luck on their journey of finding their own (◍•ᴗ•◍) <<less

Average. It's got it's good and bads.

I really enjoyed some of the music's descriptions. They're possibly the best thing you'll find in here.

The MC.. Is alright. He's kind of bland and all-powerful in all he does. Everything works in his favor. Not annoying but doesn't really have much good to be said about him. He's not really a fun or interesting character. Just, not shit.

... more>> The side characters are also kind of not that interesting or likeable. Especially true of the more frequently-appearing characters like his bodyguards and the dog.

Humour is not great. It relies too much on the same kind of jokes and shock humour. The worst example would be the rich second-gen group that the author always portrays as dumb and rich. It wasn't really funny the first time and just became more and more tiring the more it's repeated.

The settings' descriptions were kind of bland. There's not a single time I read them and thought I would like to see that. It's just really flat and lifeless.

Not terrible, not spectacular. Good for a casual read if you are short of books to read. <<less

Flawed but entertaining webnovel set in the fat future, but with technology somewhat similar to today's. The main character is a Marty Stu -- extra capable in just about anything he does. While not horrible, the lack of any meaningful challenge makes his achievements less than entirely satisfactory. Also, his scattered talents make any kind of power progression not very meaningful.

The world building is kind of shallow. It's a highly paternalistic Chinese society, yet without xenophobia that often goes with it.

Lots of slice-of-life, written with some skill but without much... more>> overarching plot. Music is a major emphasis of the novel, but given rather more importance than it can carry.

As in the author's Chronicles of Primordial Wars there are a couple of magical pets, and MC's dog, Curly Hair, is a lot of fun -- but ultimately a bit frustrating because he remains at the level of a small child.

Note: no romance of any kind. <<less

Actually a new favorite from WebNovel?

I really enjoyed this story. The novel had quite a few beautifully written (and translated) parts, especially when conveying a sentimental mood about the MC's past life. I love the MC in this story. He's basically a legend but is also very humble and thoughtful, both superhumanly strong and an eccentric artistic genius. Love our cute doggo as well, basically a mirror of our MC. Many of the side characters were hilarious as well, added a lot of energy to foil our more elderly at... more>> heart MC.

Complaints: this was way too short. Feel like there should have been like at least 200 more chapters before I could get my fill. There's so much more that could have been covered, and the MC's career was almost just starting. Plus everything that would have been possible on the military end, plus the new era of flight just beginning. If only it would have continued like in the Legendary Mechanic, that would have been pretty insane. Feel like I'm missing out on so much potential here. Wish there was more. <<less

LOVEEEE THIS NOVEL TO DEATHHHHHH!!!! AHHHHHHH, I JUST FINISHED THIS NOVEL AFTER DAYS OF BINGE READING AND I AM OBSESSED!!!

I can't even say anything remotely logical or unbiased. The characters and the story is still too fresh for me. The length and pacing of this novel was just perfect (at least for me) and Fang Zhao is one of my fave MCs. AHHHHHHHHHH, I am a h*e and competent men are my sh*t. He was written to perfection and tailored to my preferences in men. He was the perfect blend... more>> of capability, charisma, character and compassion. He wasn't very talkative, not arrogant and was very moralistic without coming across as a saint. Huhuhuhuhu, I'm very sad after reading the ending. It was HE but I haven't gotten enough of my Zhao God yet...

Also Curly Hair❤️

baby. I would miss his antics. Zaro, Barbara and the other spoiled brats would also be missed. Hayyyys, what a lovely group of characters.

In all seriousness tho, read a few chapters of this novel continuosly first then try to get a feel of our MC. Tbh, if you don't like him, chances are you won't enjoy this novel. This is HIS story after all and it's centered on his journey living in the New Era, an era that he died for. Seriously, I love him to death but other people may not like his characterization and everything. So there's that, to each their own, I guess. Happy reading! <<less

This novel is very well written. Really. Although the ending feels abrupt it was a good ride. I felt the author could've written more.

Spoiler

There's no indication that the novel was nearing the end. I even thought there's more because when Cui hua and the little bear was talking about Fang Zhao's life span, Cui hua said maybe he's still alive after 500 years. He's in his 20's when the novel ended. Wtf

I literally made an account just to write a review.

This novel was a fun read. Usually when I read novels with 400+ Chapters I would stop every now and then for a long break, but this novel had me hooked.

When I finished the novel all I could say was "It's already done?"
Their was much more the author could have explained, but I still liked how the last chapter ended.

The story touches up on different industries like music/composers, entertainment (acting), e-sports, military and others~ So it doesn't bore me, who... more>> has barely an Attention span.

I personally loved Fang Zhao and his different adventures. Also how the music compositions are described, since we can't actually hear them.

I forgot which composition it was, but one of them made me tear up- I don't know even know how it could but it did.

if you're looking for a laid-back, slow-paced, non-scheming, barely any frustrations but still interesting read this is it folks. <<less

I cannot even begin to tell you how much I absolutely ADORE this novel. Maybe a little bit of bias on my side since it's one of the first novels I ever finished, but it is an amazing read.

it's not entirely focused on music, but just enough so that it plays a significant role. If you want only novels that focus on music, and music only, then this isn't the right place for you.

The story is interesting. I like how Fang Zhao's greatness were depicted. Tho, I think the author could elaborate more instead of glossing everything over which will probably reach 1k chapter or more. I can deduce that why it isn't. The author's pen name already said it.

We are all familiar with the high we get, when the MC's about to bamboozle and faceslap everyone -- it's satisfying. However, in this novel, the author tend to not put much details ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ. It's too general. Making me want for more. Especially, when... more>> he's in action.

Anyway, the translation was well done! I've learned so many new descriptive words. Kudos to the translation team. Just imagine, listening to a music but in words. TT It's difficult but the translation did it so well. I can imagine it. <<less
