To save his terminally ill little sister, Ling Chen enters the newly released virtual game world and joins a small gaming studio comprising entirely of women. This was a 5 star series for me at first, but so much went wrong.

It was good at the start, a futuristic VRMMORPG, but it becomes some strange Wuxia thing by the end that loses the previous structure it had. Up until the East Continent (Japan) server was when it was decent, then you begin to feel something is wrong. (Half way I think)

Reading it, at the time I didn't think much of it, it was only when I finished the series and looked back that I realized how... more>> uncomfortable it makes me feel. Whilst it is true, Japan provokes the MC first, the counter was just nasty. Very anti-japan, and even penalized their nation heavily with a crippling blow afterwards. The s*xual harassment of the rep in charge is also... bad. Where upon he 'tames' her with hypnosis... and never really does anything with her again, aside from ride her as his steed.

The amount of women the MC ends up with is also appalling. Think Hugh Hefner with mind control. Even minors, or at least worryingly young looking women. At the end, they even adopt the reincarnated villainess so she can be raised as his next wife... when he already has around twenty, and hundreds of mistresses. Author is lucky that was at the very end of the last chapter, cause the skeeviness of this made me want to throw up and quit the series right there.

The Long family drama also just vanishes, when the patriarch finds out the truth. No reaction from the Xuanxuan family, or anyone else aside from Aunt Gu. They just submit quietly, and off screen.

What starts out as someone striving ahead, having suffered and grown strong for it, fighting for his friends and family, ends up as a womanizing thing that I honestly don't recognize. This was an alright story I guess, but I feel let down and frustrated now that it's over, and just want to move on. <<less

I enjoyed this story quite a bit despite its shortcomings. The MC is kind of a hypocrite with character flaws which is a nice change from the usual dumb-heroic type you see in most power fantasy.

The good things:

  • Many good side characters that remain relevant throughout
  • The girls have their own strengths and weaknesses and do their own thing. Even though they depend on the MC, the MC also depends on them as well. I hoped to see
    Spoiler

but the story ended before that happened or was shown.
  • While the ending was kind of abrupt, everything was tied up relatively well. I wanted to meet
    Spoiler

and have them properly join his harem. I wanted more from Eve. I wanted to know the back story of Qian Gun Gun. However, despite all that, the ending was quite good and left no loose ends.
  • The power system was varied enough and compact enough. Not too convoluted nor too simple.
  • Qi Yue. Most often, Chinese power fantasy stories don't have any hidden plots and the reader can always tell what's gonna happen before things happen. Qi Yue's actions in the last 50 chapters and her ending made the story 10 times better. One plot twist after another. I enjoyed that quite a bit and cannot fathom how some of the reviews hate on her. She is the most unique antihero character in all the Chinese novels I've read so far and I've read a lot.
Shortcomings:

  • Clear hate on Japan. I really didn't like the Japan Ark because it was quite useless. The author leaked a lot of his idiotic nationalism/racism to this story which is quite the shame. The reader needs to have a thick skin to go through this ark.
  • Mind control curses were used on innocent people very casually even when the MC was clearly in the wrong.
  • Some plot holes. The MC losing
    Spoiler

his mind in the lunar hell prison within a month

    [collapse]
for years. When he became immune to water-based skills he never thought about going to the ocean that was said to make up 80% of the mystic moon world and where Strong monsters appear. He would have leveled up to Lv100 very soon if he did that.
Apart from that, I'd say this story is quite ok.

Well it was a great novel, (4.5 or even more) Until it reached the Japan Arc. The calm collected MC who was not bothered by most things turns into a brainless zombie simply because he is in a different country. It is not a situation that there is a reason or hatred or something, which is the case in most novel, he goes there and even though he has a very important goal, he goes to become a mindless idiot. The author even changes the whole game for him... more>> giving him no negative status for killing people and everyone in the country is an idiot he is the only smart one. The quality and everything drops and it is not the common ad-break kind of thing, ending quickly, but it drags on and on.

I recommend the story until this arc and here you can use your absolute fast skimming art to not waste time. I am stopping here for now temporarily.

Spoiler

PS There is another s*upid decision he made before, but that had to to be done because the author made one his pets too OP.

turns out to at the last moment dramatically be a major villain and seems to act viciously against the MC but then this turns out to be false. It feels to me the author has no interest in creating coherent characters rather just meshing different personalities together. If you want to see a great example of a character thats written properly where others may misunderstand their actions as villainous but in the long run actually are for greater good... see Lelouch from Code Geass.

However in Shura's Wrath the author tries too hard to create a "twist" so he can seem smart but really it doesn't work because he never really laid any groundwork since the beginning of the novel. The author even outright contradicts the stuff he wrote earlier on to make the "twist" work because the Qi Yue's character changed to become despicable (then revealed to be just a front) just because he wants it to.

For example: most important example is
Spoiler

during the time MC got the Lunar Scourge, Qi Yue (the character I've been referring to) notices the MC's use of red eyes but the narration says shes unsure who its from.

"Is this human... a monster? How can a human, possess such a powerful spirit... How can Hametsusaigan[eyes of extermination], appear on a human!" Rubbing her sore breasts, the seductress[Qi Yue] spoke to herself while panting." Ch 42 spoken by Qi Yue, here as you can see the author tells us that Qi Yue is SURPRISED that our MC has eyes of extermination... this fact is completely denied by the person themself at the end, just so that she can act as a villain to lie to the MC... wtf?

later in ch 836, Qi Yue explaining the truth of her motives and plans to her sister...

"As many of the earthlings entered the Mystic Moon planet, the inheritor of Rashu's godly soul, Ling Tian, also entered. I had planned to attach half of my soul in the Lunar Scourge,... However, unexpectedly, when his mind was about to collapse, his dormant godly soul was temporarily awakened. He opened the Shura's Eyes of Extermination, causing the Lunar Scourge to detect Rashu's godly soul within him." See here Qi Yue acknowledges that she planned out everything and was waiting for Ling Tian, Rashu's reincarnation to arrive... clearly she already knew who our MC was.... but theres absolutely ZERO evidence this was ever the case since in ch 42, she was actually SURPRISED about this!??!?!?! Unless she acting to fool the readers I call BS because clearly the author didn't decide how to explain her motivations and plans and made last minute changes inconsistent with earlier facts...

[collapse]

TLDR;

1. False narration is used to mislead readers about a major heroine so that the author can create a so called plot twist so he can seem really smart

2. r*pe is somehow a great thing if done by the MC [MC r*pes a few women later in the series and brain washes them...I think this really belongs in a tr*shy hentai anime and not in a vengeful vrmmo novel]

3. A lot of word count is given to new ranks of skills... just the skill descriptions make up probably 10-20% of the novel and most of them are just updated descriptions after each level up... what a waste of time.

4. Some important heroines are written about in early few hundred chapters but then forgotten and just summarized in a few chapters at the end...

5. Qi Yue is a terribly written character... there has been zero evidence of her motivations since early on

Highly do not recommend. The author lies to readers in the narration just for the sake of creating "twists" to show of his miniscule intelligence... but fails miserably. Read Toika's works instead this novel is terrible. <<less

As much as I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, I just can't. I was somewhat dissatisfied by the end.

WARNING: POSSIBLY THE BIGGEST SPOILER BELOW! YOU BETTER NOT CURSE AT ME LATER!!

Spoiler

So what really irked me are three characters - Qi Yue (the main female MC) , Qi Xing (the main antagonist) and our MC, Ling Chen.

And trust me here, other than the three characters above, I don't have any other qualms. Let me clarify.

First off, our MC. I don't really dislike him and you can even say that he is one of my favorite type of MC. BUT.... sometimes he is too s*upid and a hopeless passionate lover. Qi Yue literally used him in every possible way and caused him griefs beyond words (of course, she did it for a "righteous" cause and I won't

Qi Yue - I won't need to say much other than "Shura's Wrath Xia Qingyue". I really want to like her character but till the very end, she schemes... She literally used him in every possible way and caused him griefs beyond words. Of course, she did it for a "righteous" cause and I don't have any arguments if you say that "what she had done had to be done". I know that perfectly well but it still leaves a bitter aftertaste when I read that she and MC still got together at the end.

Like, what Qi Yue did was far far grander than what ATG's Xia Qingyue did and I dare say that there are fans out there who wouldn't accept any "reasons" or "explanations" of Xia Qingyue actions.

Now, coming to Qi Xing. If the previous two characters could be argued to have a flaw in their characters, then this one had a flaw due the author's imaginations. I'll try to explain it as brief as possible. She, Qi Xing, who had killed perhaps even trillions to achieve godhood, who could be argued to be the evilest person, still get together with MC and co. by the end on a happy note.

this quite possibly could have been one of the best web novels ever written. The fights and action scenes are pact full of intensity drama and emotion. Which is great and what makes a good story normally. Except in this story when you read those scenes with real life intensity drama and emotion then you remember its all in a game with no consequences except respawning and dropping in level makes what would normally be exciting feel incredibly s*upid. You can't have the character blowing his top flying into a... more>> rage because his friend or pet died or where attacked when none of it matters. What's worse is the author has plenty of chances to fix this but is dead set on a s*upid plot line of it all being in a virtual world that is real but still has no consequences. Also the author spends about 80 chapter just straight up bashing Japanese people as much as he can. Basically every racist and insulting things he could probably think of. <<less

Good book, badass main character who's kind of an Anti Hero. I enjoyed how I was constantly surprised and how quickly he progressed constantly. Like as if it was impossible enough for him to achieve some 'certain thing', he is then somehow able to reach a step higher. He simply does crazy things, and while his lustful nature interrupted and extended the book a fair bit, it was still a good book.

Pretty decent if I say so myself. It's just the setting and power balance are kinda too absurd.

First, power balance, when we see the world as a game, sure the level and grade things sound plausible, but when it's seen as a 'world', these things aren't balanced at all. As if from other POV grade is everything matter, but from MC POV level is everything.

Then about the setting, firstly it's about a man playing a game, then he added mad scientist + modification + killing things, not enough, he turned the game into another world, still not enough, Gods appeared here and there, and finally galactic war is about to begin.

Well, aside from, let me say it again, the tension / suspense is actually quite good here.

One of the very few story that I managed to complete.

*sigh*

It's a good read, but the author fcked everything up at the ending... Like most novel that has a plot crisis when author can't get anymore ideas to write about, this pitiful novel get a super accelerator and reach the ending in a dozen of chapter.

I didn't saw it coming.. It COULD be better.

But yeah I don't know what you search for in this review, but for me it worth my time.. Except for the end arc.

EDIT 2: The ending is some premium grade bulls**t. I'm rescinding my recommendation below.

EDIT: You know, "racist" was a strong term to use and I somewhat regret saying it. Ling Chen is definitely an ass and an idiot, though. Revised down to 2 stars.

Recommended: If you're looking for some action and you don't mind if it's s*upidly macho, sure.

I've heard SW described as a predecessor to Against the Gods, and they do both share certain flaws... namely, the MC is a raging sack of testosterone and every woman he meets... more>> is a cardboard cutout that can't wait to jump him. On the other hand, he's not quite so egregious as to go around personally slaughtering innocent people for very little reason, so that's at least one thing he has over ATG. He is quite racist though, so it about balances out. Yeah... let's just say East Asian regional conflict is out in full force once again in this novel.

In the end, though, I do like Shura's Wrath slightly more than ATG, if only because I'm a sucker for game elements, which this does deliver. <<less

I don't even know what to say other than this is one of my favorite novels. It's really entertaining and has a good pace. Also, if you like ATG then you'd probably like this.

Now, how do I put it? This is not classic literature or anything like that, sometimes I feel like people expect this from these novels. Not me, as long as it's entertaining and MC is not an idiot then I'm good.

Only thing I don't really like is the racism, but I just ignore it when it happens.... more>> It's not like it's key to the story.

Also, I've seen people expect tension and whatnot from this and other novels. I feel like they're the type of people that want the MC or someone close to him to die just so that story is more realistic or something. Not me though, I can watch the news for that kind of thing. Novel is good as it is. Plus, the road isn't as smooth and peachy as they make it out to be. Dont want to spoil so ill just say that some things happen along the way but everything works out at the end. So yeah, I really recommend this. <<less

Shura's Wrath has a really smooth flow with great plot development. The cliffhangers aren't forced at all, and the suspense left at the end of most chapters keeps the reader (me) coming back to read the next chapter on a daily basis.

Spoiler

A few of my favorite twists were the death of Shui Ruo. That was completely unexpected, and it really invoked sympathy for Ling Chen.

Another one was the sudden reappearance of instructor hell. That was an amazing twist, and even better scene to read.

The episode with all of the mysterious figures talking, however, was really extra because it is kind of in the middle. I get the point of it, but they haven't expanded on it at all. But since it does have a lot of significance it makes me impatient for the author to expound on it.

Shura's Wrath is a great VR-MMORPG sci-fi/fantasy novel with a powerful main character, the story is very different to other novels of the same genre that I have read, the game world is very well described and it feels very alive as the main character explores the game world.

The story is filled with twists and turns that most of the time is difficult to see coming. The stories of the characters outside the game are well explored and makes the characters come to life in such a way that you... more>> can’t help but get excited/angry/happy right along side them.

First of all, let me make this clear, this novel will be much different than any of other "VRMMORPG" from Korea or Japan. Also, don't even compare it to Ark/LMS, because they are much worse. Ark/LMS are still great stories, but Shura's Wrath is on an extremely higher level.

And a piece of advice, treat the whole RPG as an adventure instead of a game despite the focus of the early chapters was (a bit too much) on the RPG aspects.

The story was one of the most interesting stories I've ever... more>> read, the real world is often neglected in other novels but it was very well developed, shocking even. The Real-Life was very focused on the novel and had a very interesting story that played out very well in the end. The author also didn't shy away from having the MC getting some action (explicit even) with his harem which is very rare in Japanese mangas/novels. Each harem member has a purpose.

Let's have a bit of spoiler about his harem, the number of his harem was around

50+ but of course, many of them are only minor characters - that were a part of his past organizations that work behind the scenes - and only mentioned once. The main harem was about 7-9. And you'll even get a canon best girl at the very last chapter.

This is my first time writing a review so I'm gonna make this as short and sweet as I can and maybe another time I will make a long one.

What I want to say is that this book is truly amazing. If you want to get the taste of what an absurdly overpowered character both in the real world and in the virtual world can be like then I hope you are already reading instead of wasting your time reading my short review XD.

Anyways if you want a little break... more>> from the generic wuxia novels, which are not bad mind you, and like op characters with harem as an added factor (I know it's a turn off and on for others) then seriously if you got this far in the review please heed my words and start reading I truly don't think you will regret it.

This is a great series, (all of the stuff from Mars Gravity is amazing) - It does its intended job of being a power-progression fantasy while also using very quality writing to make you react heavily, whether it's with surprise, sadness or just the feel-good moment as the protagonist kicks someone's ass.

Characters

Most character decisions make perfect sense for the character and there are lots of implicit reactions or wordings from characters that tell you so much more about the character than the (more) typical Chinese way of telling with... more>> the very blunt, or direct methodology. (The difference is a good change) - all well written too.

The names (as an English reader) always take a while but you always know who's talking by what/the way the characters say even without needing a name, as there will be a character who fits the line being said.

Story

Every character is interesting in his/her own way as the reader explores everything from the POV of the main character while learning about his past in slow steps surprising myself more than once. The use of foreshadowing is amazing from Mars Gravity- if you can pick up on some of the clues he lays down when the moment of revelation that occurs is so satisfying and is just amazing.

Sure he is super lucky and defeats everyone due to very manner- but even this is explained to some degree and by no means are the 1v1 fights ever boring. The story it'self is never boring either, with multiple facets of the story being explored, while maintaining a very concise and direct storyline very very minor spoiler:
Spoiler

(*hue hue* which sometimes has good plot twists)

[collapse]

Sure it is a progressive harem- but it makes sense somewhat within the story.

Recommending it

It does take a lot of reading for it to get amazing, but that's because you have to world build and explore the plot along with the main character. Definitely worth it-

You have to like the game-like genre for it to really speak out at the beginning, but at the same time the game-like space is completely irrelevant to the plot as its used to fuel it- but the actual interesting interactions happen either within the game-world or in the 'real' world- where personally, the more interesting parts of the story occur.

I can't really say how many chapters you should read if you want to see for yourself, but anything past 15 chapters just gets better and better. <<less
