How long I’d been here, I couldn’t quite recall. From this sorry situation, I as always raised my eyes to the sky; a sky in which the great, massive sun was clad in levity. Sunlight poured gently upon all. What a blessing it would have been for the world if only the skies could remain clear. For tomorrow too, and for all days to come, I was to continue to pray for calm. To endure for those who cried, with desperation I remained in prayer.

And then, one freezing, forlorn, soulless, stagnant, drizzly day we died. Or so I thought…

First off, I have't been on NU for a while due to college, but I was very, very excited when I saw that this work is finally gaining some attention! Huge thanks to Pyschobarcode for the excellent translations!

I learned about this series through "The Girl who ate a Death God, " because they're part of the same universe. Highly recommend the latter to anyone who likes the current series!

It's a slightly dark, medieval fantasy story that sort of starts off as cookie-cutter, but gradually becomes more and more immersive as... more>> various dilemmas begin to flesh themselves out. It's definitely an involved read that you'll want to be awake for while reading, otherwise you might miss some important details. That's probably a big difference - for me, at least - between this novel and others, which I generally skim semi-consciously.

It's definitely looking to be a lot of fun to read, and highly suggest it for anyone looking for a unique and well-written LN whose distinctiveness doesn't hinge on meta-satire or yet another type of reincarnation. <<less

The story feels a bit artificial at first: most of the characters feel at first like they're roles to force some emotions out of us, like the MC's best friend who dies, the boys who dramatically end up on opposing sides, the conveniently-placed female knight, etc. There is also the troubling fact that at first, none of the sides are likeable, and in many situations, the MC is usually the only one who seems to have a brain.

Despite this awkward start, once the direction of the story becomes more clear,... more>> the military and political plotline is actually quite interesting and promises much more. Also, the MC is quite unique: her optimism and out-of-place remarks in even the darkest situations make her absolutely charming, yet at the same time she's innocently ruthless underneath. Her search for and philosophical musings about happiness, in the meantime, provide quite a bit of comedy but also food for thought (she wasted no time crossing off 'marriage' for example).

I won't rate it yet since I think it's a bit early: though the story feels forced at first, it flows considerably better later on and shows great potential. I'll certainly be paying attention to see if it lives up to its promise. <<less

Unfortunately, this isn't a very good story. It feels like a watered-down rehash of Death God (mysterious strong girl joins the army to crush some rebels, has a special weapon, rises up, yadda yadda). The tone is all over the place, and the cast consists of a bunch of bland, flat characters with very little motivation that you end up not really caring about.

I think the author might've gotten a one-hit wonder with Death God, because that was an excellent read. His next series, however (Maiden Called Hero or Monster)... more>> suffered from some serious pacing issues and felt like a waste of time. Then we get Flame Ring. It feels like the author's ability to write is going downhill with each installment. Very sad.

The translation. The translation is very mediocre. The TL is clearly that of a someone with less than a two years of studying, and to top if off, it seems like English isn't even their first language. Awkward sentences, some blatant mistranslations, the usual.

Overall, you're not missing much by skipping this. Other reviews have already covered what I might say. <<less

I haven't read The Girl Who Ate Death but I mostly agree with Pixeldrum's review. The story has a foundation for something incredible but kind of falls flat. It doesn't feel like a complete story, either. The conclusion is too abrupt, characters are underdeveloped and despite Chapter 45 being a masterpiece the novel as a whole is lacking. The translation itself is meh, it's obvious that the translator isn't very proficient in Japanese as there're more than few mistranslations, some of them are rather major (in one of the chapters... more>> the translator mistakenly claimed that Noel killed innocent villagers while in the actual text it was just a musing of "what if", i.e. The author tried to explain the reason why she didn't kill anyone). I kind of expected much more from such a high rating, but oh well. It still was an enjoyable read overall despite all the flaws. <<less

Amazing story, it's dark, different from all the other Stories, give it a shot maybe you'll like or maybe not, but the first chapter itself will decide it if you're into it or not.

Great read. As someone who is a big fan of reading about war and deception and betrayal, I give this work a 4.5/5. Unlike other fantasies, there aren't always easy victories for our main lead. Sometimes there are losses, but that's fine. It's how our protagonist gets back up and learn to fight with allies rather than by herself that makes this worthwhile and enjoyable.

Reading this proposed more questions than giving answers. Although it may leave an unsatisfactory aftertaste, the overall journey was enjoyable enough.

(I actually wanted to give this a 5, but the last few chapters felt rushed or so.)

If you look at this novel critically, there are a lot of plot holes and inconsistent story lines.

Spoiler

What is the past of the MC? Is this built in a fantasy setting? Does Noel have powers? What is the connection of the sun with the protagonist? How come a random character just popped out of nowhere and had a big impact in the story? It was implied that there are strange things in the novel but they didn't clearly explain it. Is this because there is no need to do so or the author had subtly made it like that?

[collapse]

To be honest, thinking about it now, this story felt very shallow. There was not much build up and everything was written as either a happy-go-lucky life of chapter or "war, military, death" chapter. Although the war chapters were fun to read, it was somehow dubious that such tactics can be implemented in real life. Well, I do think that reality was not the strongest point of this novel. But the morale of the story is what really gets me.

It might sound cheesy but the goal of the protagonist was very humane, in my opinion. What is it that she seeks? Will she achieve it? How will she get it and where? Such questions were not given direct answers in the story, as the goal itself is not easily attainable even in real life. These questions got me pondering on the MC's initial purpose and life itself.

I'll stop with these very un-"review-ish" words and have you decide for yourself. Read this and you will have a good time. I'm sure that Noel and company will leave you entertained all throughout the story. After all, our Noel is a very bright and lovely girl just like the sun. And like the sun, she will bring light to those around her. Much like how her relationship with others work. Noel is one of the many reasons why I stuck to reading and finishing this novel. Her personality is refreshing and if you look beyond the plot and just enjoy everything, I'm sure you'll love this novel! <<less

Tough choice between a 3 and a 4.

Reading this after "The Girl Who Ate a Death God", I was actually disappointed with this novel. While the battles still felt 5/5 material, certain parts such as the backstory and character development just felt a bit lackluster to me. Especially with how some of the confrontations at the end were handled, it really just left me with confused / disappointed moments.

I'm not entirely sure why I started this novel as this isn't really my cup of tea nor what I'd normally read but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Despite being a "serious" story with heavy military exposition and the horrors of war kind of thing, it really never gets too dark or too complicated. At least it never feels like it does. This is largely due to how goofy many of the characters are, especially the female lead. Noel is a super soldier but also extremely childish and free spirited. Her personality... more>> nearly negates any serious moments or brutal battles such that it's hard to flinch at the horrors of the era this novel takes place in. That said, her interactions with the rest of the characters are enjoyable and maybe even endearing in a strange twisted way and enough to keep me reading all the way through.

The story is the weakest point for me. While certainly very interesting, everything entirely relies on Noel simply winning the fight through her sheer super strength and apperently super knowledge of military affairs. It's difficult to feel any tension when the outcome of a battle is easily predictable once you get through the first few of them. The ending also leaves alot to be desired, as many questions go unanswered and everything concludes far too quickly.

Enjoyable nonetheless thanks to the cast of characters and would still lightly recommend it to anyone with an interest in this genre. <<less

I really love this novel and it really worth to read it. I love the MC (Noel) and I like her personality. It rare for MC especially female with that kind of personality but I ship her with Falid if those 2 reincarnated I really want Falid marry Noel.

caveat: read only up to chapter 7 and decided to drop.

The main issue is inconsistent characterization for the female lead, (wants to be come a prince subordinate while hating the emperor), ironic humor while being naive, actually most of the dialogues are naive and boring.

Some of the action scenes are for the most part unbelievable: e.g.

“What? A woman’s voice?”

“It’s a woman, she’s running away! It has to be Sarah! (The princess) Catch her!”

What? Why? Is she the only women in the world?

Its not awful, thus 3 starts.

Even though there are a few unanswered questions all the way to the end and the story is a bit shallow with some forced twists and turns it was a fantastic read!

This novel had a nice balance of dark political storytelling and the (against all odds) joyful day-to-day life of the MC.

IMO the best part of this novel is the implementation of different characters. The MC is likeable in a credible way (others never started to suddenly adore her just for plot convenience) and also the "villains" felt like real... more>> people with more motivation behind their actions than just "being evil in order for the MC to have someone to fight against".

All in all it's an easy 5/5, would read a similar follow-up if the author decided to write one. <<less

Great novel!

  • Story: Great, too much fighting for my taste but still great
  • Characters: Interesting and funny (not really realistic, but it still works great)
  • World: Great, nothing that feels out of place so far
Summary: Read it! And while you are at it read other novels from this author as well, you definetly wont regret it!

Thus far (2 chapters) : Excellent translation quality and an interesting story to start things off. Plus, it has tragedy mixed in pretty liberally. I'm tempted to read ahead in the raws, but the translators are doing such a great job so far that I'll hold off on that.
