When reading xianxia, you're bound to eat shit. There are a lot of gross, dumb, or just plain sexist tropes paired with overpowered MC that doesn't really suffer and enemies always underestimate him, he annihilates a clan with no consequence, selective character s*upidity to advance, the author's neck fetish (?), etc. It isn't that RMJI doesn't have some of these things, but they're toned down a lot compared to the other star titles of the genre.

You get the feeling that this is really just a tale of a mortal's ascension... more>> to immortality. There's no absurd unearned cheats and most characters act reasonably. Even though he has many lucky breaks they feel earned compared to the rest of the genre. The author f*cks up his timeline sometimes, but it manages to make you feel the burden of immortality. He has to cut ties with his family, seeing his younger siblings with no spiritual roots become adults and get married, his father turn into a hunchback grandpa, and his old enemies/acquaintances falling into ruin or rising to greater heights.

Keep in mind of the word "acquaintance" because this is a lonely novel. As far as I've gone, there are NO companions in this novel. The author is good at building characters (although he sucks at potential romantic interests, rest of the women are ok), but most are like guys that you were friends with in high school that you never see again after graduation or move towns. It fits in well with the worldbuilding, because the cultivation world and his lifestyle doesn't allow for true friends. Even if you become friends, eventually you either end up developing rivalries for resources or become estranged as one of you rises above the other in cultivation.

I also have to talk about the interesting world building. In RMJI, for most people your martial skill and small realm doesn't mean much. Most of the fighting is done with magic items. It turns cultivator battles into a battle of money and using your wits to find OP combinations. Even if you're freakishly talented with martial arts, you probably have to rely on a strong, expensive weapon. There's also the fact that this is simultaneously a wuxia and xianxia world, normal people live in wuxia and learn martial arts, with real magic being hidden from mortals.

This is an excellent progression fantasy novel, if you can wrap your head around the bad parts of xianxia. <<less

One of the best xianxia novel out there.

It record Han Li cultivation journey from mortal child until ascending to become immortal in great detail.

Pro =

... more>> - very good story. Something always comes up and not makes me bored

- I like the cautious MC character in everything

Con =

- sometimes the author includes too much detail which is unnecessary, that makes the story becomes slow paced (although I still enjoyed it a lot)

- the story ends after he becomes true immortal and kinda abrupt (I'm sure it could be 500 chapter more) <<less

Besides the first ARC where I felt something and had some excitement. The rest was such a drag that I don't want to even bother reading the immortal arc.

I was reading for the sake of completion

The story is so bland, there's nothing unique about it. MC has been made too ordinary in my opinion. There's nothing unique about him. He runs away 90% of the times. Alot of chapters are spend on refining stuff that gets destroyed within 50 chapters. Like damn you spend a whole chapter telling me about... more>> a single item okay.

Also the the hell after the first 2 arc time skips goes into decades and centuries. I feel disconnected from the story alot of the times. If you're going to time skip everytime I don't know why I bother caring about other characters. The fact I don't even care about the MC after a while says alot!

MC also always gets into random scenarios with women who are all pretty much useless and we have to always go to the save the damsel in distress route. MCs feelings are always so confusing , he was h**ny in the beginning then became a thousand year old man who has love debts everywhere hell.

Don't read this, you'll bore yourself to death. I gave 3 stars for my own effort to finish this 2000 plus chapters. <<less

I give the ratings at the end of the review.

The novel is great and all, but what makes it different than the rest is that it constantly brings back past acquaintances of the MC and every single thing mentioned will become a plot point, this is to the point it seems unreasonable that exist that many coincidences.

That is up until the end where the author seems to rush it and forgets various abilities he gave the MC, only to be reminded by the readers and rewriting the specific chapters. Still... more>> he wrapped all the plot points he left open, so kudos to his consistency even when he obviously got bored.

First book (100 chapters) : 5 stars

Second book: 4 stars

After that we have moments that range from 2 stars to 5 stars (unfortunately only for brief periods, I don't think it ever reached the length of the first 100 chapters again), in the end averaging to 3/3, 5 stars.

But that is while disregarding the feels and the awfulness of the average wuxia novel, so I give the novel 4 stars, while some fellow daoist could even give it 5 stars. Still in the top three wuxia novels. <<less

If you find me a more fitting title for this novel I'm going to eat the bed where I am resting (and damn is the bed big).

Cough... Cough..... Cough sorry for the unnecesary comment, anyway to describe this novel I would say that we the readers are passenger on a boat (that is the novel) and we encounter sometimes big waves coming from the sea but not too much (event) but in most of the case the journey is regular and calm like you would expect from a journey on... more>> a boat.

That is what the story of this novel is and so why is it good? Well for many they do not know and don't like this novel or maybe it's not their taste but for me I keep the novel title in my mind when reading it; the MC was a mortal who became is journey as a cultivator, alone and without knowledge of cultivation at all, he will then learn everything step by step through his encounters filled with danger and opportunies and at the same time we to will undergo a journey with him were the world were the MC live will unfold before us.

As he grow through adversity and time we grow too, from a mortal to an immortal, from a child to an adult. <<less

The all-out "epic combat" is a little annoying, I mean, doesn't MC have tons of opaque and absurdly complementary equipment and abilities, every tool, beast or skill is always described as "heaven-defying incredible". But when the battle took place, MC always had trouble and even almost lost at some point.

It's like a noob player wearing a character full of myth-class equipment struggles against a character who only has one mythical piece of equipment, even though they are of the same level.

If MC is called a fool I can understand, but... more>> what MC is proud of here is his intelligence <<less

It is not without flaws but it's one of the best (if not The best) novels in the "xianxia" genre.
Every arc is not the same. MC can die at any moment and the story feels alive. Every small detail matters, nothing is forgotten.
MC is not overpowered and you can feel the struggle.
A story written not for 14 years old children as it should be (cough... cough..., xuanhuan).

The only downside is immortal world arc. compared to the first mortal part it kinda feels tedious and bland.
But well,... more>> there are no perfect novels and as far as Webnovels go this is one of a kind. <<less

Seriously give this story a try.. it may start slow, but after some time it becomes exciting... is a very good novel I read after long time. Wuxia lovers can give it a try.. even though the story is wuxia, it differs from others by solely focusing on how MC goes through twists and turns to cultivate with his worst talent instead of clans and sects and competitions. Sure like others MC gets treasure and lucky to help him cultivate. But that doesn't make instant super powered power tripping moron,... more>> he genuinely struggles every step. cons is authors way of writing the plot.. he time skips many events with simple explanations at end, but sometimes he goes deep into useless things bores the readers... <<less

A well written martial arts novel from a unique perspective. It's a slow burn with complicated and flawed characters but if this sounds like the kind of thing that might appeal to you, you won't be disappointed. Definitely not a novel for everybody but fantastic if it matches your tastes.

Ehh, read this a long time ago, and is one of my first novels when I got introduced to "newer kinds (xianxias) of novels" (stopped at before Book 8), and only this week did I make this account so I'm still gonna write this. The first few hundred chapters (up to 400-500) were great. MC relies more on himself than lucky breaks and goes to an adventure to find materials and do requirements to advance his cultivation, while stuff happens on the background that changes the status quo without it... more>> being related to him. Later chapters became MC being lucky 75% of the time, finding convenient stuff that he needs, no character developments whatsoever, etc. Novel's overrated.

6/10 cause of nostalgia and my young self having lower tastes. <<less

For me this is a solid four star story. It isn't original or particularly outstanding. It's just a consistently good cultivation story. I look forward to each chapter, even though they tend to feel too short. I don't expect anything crazy from the plot or any characters with great depth. Honestly this is probably a three star story for people who don't enjoy cultivation stories like this as much as me. It's just a genre I like executed in a way that really suits my particular tastes. It isn't perfect... more>> and it doesn't perfectly match my personal preferences. Nevertheless, I enjoy every chapter and that's enough for me. <<less

Maybe this is the only novel I read which is really good, the author really smart and build the story with so many detail.

The every character he made has their own story and the author really tell the reader how they died or gone if he doesn't that chara anymore, not just a simple character who passing by. And this character is most humane from other novel chara I read I mean he doesn't just jump to every opportunity he had, he doesn't immediately get every ingredient he needs, he... more>> has patience which is incredible. And the most important thing he isn't op from the start. <<less
