Amamiya Hiroto is unlucky. His life consisted of misfortune after misfortune, culminating in an unlucky death during an incident on a school boat trip, trying to save a girl he barely knew. After death, he met a god of reincarnation who requested that the hundred or so dead passengers—one of them being the girl he tried in vain to save—be reincarnated into another world.

Yet a series of unfortunate events forced Hiroto to reincarnate with even less luck than before, starting with nothing but a tremendous amount of Mana. His second life, far worse than his first, came to a cruel end.

However, upon meeting the god a second time, he was informed that there would be yet another reincarnation—one that had already been set in motion and could not be stopped. Not wanting Hiroto to live long, the god cursed him before he was reborn in the hopes that he would either die quickly or commit su*cide.

Hiroto was reborn once more as a half-Vampire, half-Dark Elf. A Dhampir. Not wanting a fourth life, he is determined to live this third life with the only things remaining from his previous lives—death-attribute magic and his enormous Mana pool.

Overrated.

The premise the story revolves around is well-built, with a typical struggle of vengeance against a supreme being taking place throughout the plot. MC is subjected to misery and misfortune as dictated by the ultimate antagonist of the story. Such should have born fruit a thrilling tale of a bloodseeking mu*derer who would do any means to take revenge against the one who made him fall to the deepest pits.

However, the story was failed in so many ways. The MC became a stereotype Japanese protagonist loved by the crowds. The... more>> sudden change in the mood would surely make anyone feel off, but no, no one does and everyone keeps praising it highly. Instead of going about his worldly struggle against a heavenly agitator, he indulged in meaningless talks with his lackeys (what else, but ghouls with a mismatched character portrayal). The story suddenly shifted from dark to light, erasing all possible hopes of action and replacing it with fluffy engagements and discussions about magical anti-pregnancy devices and fealty stuff by an outrageously loyal peanut gallery.

I don't know how this novel should be considered a masterpiece, but I rate this 2/5.

I love this series. Personally, I think this is the best series out there and it is definitely my favorite. What people have been saying about bad character development does not make any sense to me. I mean if that is what gives you a bad idea about the novel then don't worry, in terms of character development, I feel that it does a much better job than most people.

Spoiler

What people don't understand is that Vandalieu (Van) had been seriously screwed up due to all of the experiments that have been done on him which had caused him to become emotionally impaired. He understands most things and does not lose his common sense or become like a child its just that he goes kind of crazy at times due to the trauma he suffered, but that is fixed thanks to his mother as with the care she gives him he becomes somewhat reliant on her kindness which makes him a cute character and it leads him to become somewhat fixed, but he still ends up making decisions based on his emotions. And then he really only sees people as enemies, family, friends, and people he doesn't about. Well, its a lot more complicated than people make it out to be. Its interesting and to say that the character development is s*upid really doesn't make sense to me.

Love Japanese light novels and I must say this is one of the best of it! It has all the right components for an excellent reincarnation Japanese light novel: Food, love/woman, strong character who uses his power for good if non-selfish ways, and a great story between friends who want for a better life without too much ambition.

NEW REVIEW:

I still love this series. Considering that the protagonist is a kid that is insane, I can definitely understand his actions are quite inconsistent. It would shift from play like a normal kid, go make some golems, implement plans to make Talosheim great again, kill those who are in the way, recruit some people willing to help him, muscles, disguising as a statue and hide, acquire good jobs. Such is the weird mindset of the protagonist. Also, I like how others are naturally attracted to his charisma just because... more>> of a skill. I believe at some point in time, it will bite very hard. I like how the author writes. His style is quite predictable and yet executes the plot greatly.

OLD REVIEW:

I can definitely say that this is a good read. If you don't mind the whole cooking and food parts, then it's good. Really good. The beginning is a little (very) shaky but it will manage to stabilize itself in further chapters. Even the side stories are engaging. The power of the protagonist is, even though it's OP, has many uses and yet has limits.

That's all I'll say for now.

One more thing, I like how some people are expecting that the story will be "dark" because they read the first chapters.

Lol

The beginning doesn't determine the middle and the end of the story; the author does. <<less

First, let me say this is not meant to be a revenge story. There is some revenge but this is not The Count of Monte Cristo, and the Van is so twisted even his understanding of revenge is strange.

This is an epic dark fantasy with lots of badass action, grey-and-grey morality, bizarre comedy and a very diverse cast. It's also very optimistic since it makes fun of the concepts that make it "dark".

A couple of downsides is that it starts very slow, picking up the pace after after two-three arcs;... more>> and that it has so many characters you're forgiven to forget they exist or that they are present at a particular scene, but almost everyone kicks some ass. <<less

After reading hundreds of webnovels, this one is my favorite.

Good characters, good comedy, good battles.

The thing that makes it great though are the stat updates. The MCs team is constantly levelling, and when they do their skills improve, combine and evolve. Watching this happen is most of the enjoyment.

ruly a novel that is being overshadowed with its bad reviews and, of course some are fair as many of the characters are driven for the sake of the plot and have low personality or that the protagonist has a boring personality (although I disagree), the protagonist starts out consumed by hatred, but when he calms down and the story continues we realize how tender he is, and although it is not until several volumes later that it develops a little more in the fight with heinz, all that can... more>> be forgotten because of the excellent world and development of it, how everything fits in a place and has a sense of how everything is not black and white but grey, this the author does excellently, and more recently we are shown how it develops in the fight against heinz, I love it and I want to keep reading it and I wait for it every day with eagerness. <<less

Let me start out by saying that the first few chapters of this novel tend to fake people out a bit. Horrible stuff happens to the MC, and he is temporarily somewhat consumed by a desire for vengeance, but this is not really a revenge novel, and the MC (and, by proxy, the reader) won't keep being punched in the gut like that. That's just the backstory. Revenge is certainly one of the MC's goals, but it's really only as a necessary intermediate step toward his real goal of a... more>> peaceful, comfortable life with a warm, loving family. In the first chapter he tries to save a girl he doesn't really know, and he stays the kind of person who would do that throughout the story, despite the ruthless streak he gains. This fakeout seems to be the main source of negative reviews here, and if what you want is a revenge-fest, then I suppose you should listen to them, but if you're open to something else, I highly recommend this novel.

The tone of the story is often almost as lighthearted as Death March, but gets much more serious when the MC deals with his enemies. The worldbuilding is in-depth and well done, though the first volume or so is a bit inconsistent with the rest of the story (I think it just took the author a bit to find his stride in that regard). The characters are fairly static, but they are internally consistent, many, and varied in order to make up for that. The plot gets more complex as the story goes on, and though it doesn't have too many huge shocker moments, the number of plausible ways things could go is often very high, so you never really know how it's all going to come together. Also, the fight scenes are always fresh. It seems like the MC has a whole new fighting style for essentially every major fight.

This story stands a lot of stereotypes of good and evil on their heads, and will probably make you think through your own stance on the morality of some actions. There are many characters with notably distinct ideas on what is good and evil, to what degree and in what areas it's acceptable to enforce your values on others, and other such moral issues, and the conflicts between these different viewpoints drive a lot of the story. This is where the real depth of the story comes in, and it's what makes it truly exceptional in my view.

This is labelled as a harem story, which is true, but the harem is largely theoretical and doesn't play too major a role in the story, as even 247 (very long) chapters in, the MC is still only 11 years old and hasn't awakened his s*xual instincts yet, so it's all just promises for the future and some amusing situations. It does get played for laughs at times though (people seeing a new female character with the MC and wondering if he's "done it again", for example).

Regarding the translation speed, some people are under the impression that the translator is tying chapter release rate to donations. He isn't. He just gets so many donations he never gets the chance to do a non-sponsored chapter. Translation speed is dictated by the amount of time the translator can spare to work on it, nothing else. The translation quality is the best I've ever seen in a fan translation (It's being manually translated by someone who actually translates professionally; none of this touched-up MTL that you see a lot of), and given the very long chapters, 1 chapter a week on average is an amazing deal, even if it can't keep up with the shockingly prolific author.

Finally, a warning: This story contains some pretty extreme events and circumstances, though they aren't depicted graphically (or even directly in most cases, you're often merely informed that they happened) and are never fetishized as some of them might be in some other genres, nor are they being used for shock value. Even so, they mean this novel is not for the feint of heart. These include women getting captured and r*ped by monsters, a non-human tribal culture happily feasting on human meat, total break-their-mind-with-a-sledgehammer-level brainwashing of humans, the casual slaughtering of an infant for a magic ritual, long term genocidal agendas by major powers, utterly inhumane scientific experiments on unwilling subjects from birth, the removal of the skin on a man's face and head while he's still alive... I could keep going, but you get the idea. <<less

Amazing web novel, possibly the best one there is. If you love huge harems, the "hiding true power" trope and never-ending cooking, then you'll love this one in its current form.
To be honest, I was a bit skeptical about all that world-building, battles, lore and unconventional characters. Way too convoluted, and cooking was far and few between. Sure, you still could skip the plot filler and jump straight to the harem or cooking parts. But this diluted the experience. I am a man of simple tastes, all I need... more>> for self-inserting is a protagonist surrounded by delicious food and beautiful girls. I have zero interest in plot progression or whatever.
But I didn't suffer for nothing, my prayers were finally answered with the current arc (chapters 205~).

Spoiler

We have a literal god hunting goblins, raising a dog and selling skewers for a dozen of chapters, all while his harem is steadily growing in the background. Just how awesome is that?!

[collapse]

What a great improvement, it's almost like an entirely different story now. I can only hope this arc will never end. <<less

If you are looking for the typical over the top revenge plot then this isnt for you... If you are not into harem then this isnt for you either.. From revenge to acceptance and just trying to live life the way he sees fit with enemies left and right trying to bring him down... This novel is fantastic as it shows how difference in opinions can lead to ugly conflicts and actions... When the "Self Righteous" try to dictate what is right and declares anything that is different to be... more>> evil.. While ignoring the suffering of those they oppress believing they are just and every action they do is right and not wrong.. This novel plays with your emotions beautifully...

Its not as slow as some have stated.. It shows how the MC is shaping society with what he believes is rights but faces opposition from enemies left and right.. Each enemy is introduced methodically and they appear at crucial times that fit the story line.. Like the introduction of the enemies the story itself is methodical as it tries to get readers to put themselves in the MCs shoes as he tries to live his life while facing opposition from other characters that try to harm either him or to the people he calls family...

Overall it is a fun read.. And every time an action sequence occurs it is very epic.. <<less

It's not great, it's not terrible, it's alright.

It's a pretty standard isekai story and its got all the tropes that come with the genre. The only one I can't stand anymore is cultivating and recreating culinary from earth. I don't give a sh*t about any of that, I just turn my brain off and skip through text until there's dialog about something different.
I kinda like the MC and the battles are pretty dope. I don't care much about his companions and I always forget who is who cause there's... more>> too many of them at this point. The interactions are funny half the time, sometimes heart warming, and other times they just annoy me and make me roll my eyes.
I enjoy the whole me against the world vibe its got going on and conspiracy. The thing that stands out the most and makes this novel unique is how grotesque Vandeliu gets and everyone's reaction to that. Pretty neat stuff.

Overall, I like it but I can't decide how much. If it didn't have all this cultivation/culinary crap it'd be half as long and twice as good.

P.S. If you liked this novel cause it's got a good anti-hero MC you should check out Dungeon Defense. <<less

I think this is a great story, while some might argue that the character is a kind protagonist which he is but it is only to the one he feel dear or silmilar to, you get reason for many of the action the protagonist or the god.
Spoiler

One reason some might hate this novel is because the god made a mistake in reincarnating the MC but it explain later on that there more than one god and the gods in this story are not all powerful, they can be kill by human and monster and their power is limit by their belief.

Another reason other might hate this novel is that the story change tone when the MC reincarnated in to the other world but are you going to hate some one who kill you just because you went on a rampage due to rage and them not even knowing it you since you are a monster at that point and you have never have a proper conversation with any of them to let them remember you. This tone can also shift since anyone don't think straight when they're enrage.
Other reason they might not like the novel is MC turn does not take revenge for his mother and kill people who look on as his mother burn at the stake. One thing you have to remember is this is another world and MC is not truly OP yet, the one that capture his mother is a A rank adventure group that will later level to a point that can fight weaker gods do you really think he a zero year old have any chance to kill them not to mention the amount of knight or adventure powerful enough to kill rank 3 monster which is a the level of a dinosaur like the t-Rex station over there. This is another world and in it burning people who belong to the Vida race, to them Alda is consider the truth so the Vida race is consider evil. Will you protect a person classified by law as a criminal that you don't know, no you won't.

Being one year old and having a harem might sound ridiculous but remember there are many characters in this story is the several hundred to thousand to even hundred thousand year old to them their not much different between someone one year old to some one who twenty since they can just wait for him to grow up a little and it be ok.

You might not like him inferior complex but you have to known he was in constant abuse when he was in his first life and do you believe you can take on over hundred people with cheat like power given by god while you are curse?
Though the cooking part might seem exaggerated and long one thing we need to understaind is this is a world where cooking aren't being studied to such a degree as modern cooking and Vandalieu is Japanese so it no wondering most food is Japanese food.
[collapse]

One of many thing to remember when reading this novel is it Japanese so of course it have lots of Japanese reference and thing related to Japan which the translater does a great job telling use about it. The MC is not op at the start and the world and their belief is different from our which is something you must know to start enjoy the this story. It does get clarify later in the story about many part of the novel on like why the main character is born as a Vida race, why the MC have some much many mana and many other which even have some clue to their answer. This is a very good novel and the MC does try to kill or take revenge in some way to most of the people involve in his mother mu*der. This story have a motivation that keep the MC going forward it just not as some as great as saving a world or for world peace, his motivation is to save him mother who brought him a new life in a complete not undead or reincarnated way and to help those that have help him. Even thought there are some problem with the novel it still a great novel. If you live like slow going story this is a great one. Though one bad part about this novel should be the some what slow update.

For those who only read a few chapters and conclude that our MC is some kind of typical open-minded protagonist, you should patient and read again. Personally I think he is basically a good guy but have a serious happiness complex (?). He don't want to kill people and very kind when somebody good to him but when some guy likely to take happiness from him, he will kill them to some extent that someone think it guro and hard to bear.

I think you guy gave this novel 1 star when MC don't kill all people that called his mother "witch" or when he stayed at ghoul village but trust me, he is a villian in this novel, the demon kill that kill heroes and eat the god. Be patient and you will see how insane this guy is

It's a fun read unless you can only tolerate edgelord MCs that kill/torture everyone that looks at them wrong. The MC does have revenge in mind, but being accompanied by his mother's spirit seems to make him put attaining happiness as his primary goal. He is kind, funny, but still somewhat insane as he can stomach things like using a person as Trojan horse, storing insects within his own body like Shino, and creating living piles of flesh like some mad scientist.

Spoiler

What might get some people upset (i.e. The 1-star reviews) is that he let one of his revenge targets get away in the beginning and didn't mu*der the entire town for being happy that a supposed witch (his mom) was killed. From that, some probably assumed that he would never have the guts to kill people that wrong him. He definitely kills. So long as he can find a good reason, he has no qualms about killing, destroying souls, and even turning an entire army that attacked him into Undeads and sending them straight back to the attacking country.

I honestly can't say I've had as fun reading other stories recently as I have reading this. This story got me excited for a Bee for f*cks sake xD Idk why but this story makes me giddy while reading it. I especially love the informational sections about skills and abilities, races, how the guild operates, the reason I love this story so much is mostly because it's how I envision quite a few of the stories I've written myself in the past going in various different ways and I read... more>> stories like this to gather ideas and expand my own understanding of certain things. I have spent the last several days binge reading this and I've been excited from the start and like any good story I can't put it down and now I'm all caught up I really wanna keep reading x3 One of the things I love the most about the story is the creative use and understanding of Death. One of the most depressing openings I've ever read to a story. The MC has it hard and the story and writing style makes sure you understand it well. First dozen chapters or so feel like a drag and are rather emotionally consuming, almost prompting me to abandon the series.

However, the story picks itself up rather quickly. The MC skyrockets rather quickly from very weak to very powerful, but without becoming completely OP. There are many factions and people that are stronger than the MC, constantly creating some tension and... more>> weight to the plot. The story evolves rapidly into a rather generic and light hearted OP isekai story, but maintains several serious aspects and even occasional setbacks and tragedies so that the emotional rollercoaster keeps rolling nicely.

A story which begins with tragedy and maintains the balance between light hearted harem OP stuff and serious, sometimes even tragic, stuff. Unique and interesting plot, well built and rather complicated world and well fleshed out characters. Might not be one of the finest novels I've ever read, but definitely one of the most interesting ones.

Also, the translation job is superb. The amount of effort, care and skill put into it is obvious and something I never thought I'd see in online translations. <<less

A worse version of Overlord without the charm.

The author can conjure up an interesting world but the way he delivers the details and intricacies of the world he's describing leaves much to be desired. His world-building presentation is just barely better than a textbook description. It sometimes feels like a toddler droning on and on about details you don't care about.

His characters are flat and uninteresting and any characters which show the potential so far of being interesting, turn up to be one-dimensional yes-men or starry-eyed women pining for affection.... more>> The villains are more interesting than the main cast and the MC is just plain boring, no charm, no quirks, he's just so flat. Not that there isn't some depth to him, he's just not interesting at all to read about. Most probably again because of the authors presentation skills.

The plot and story are fairly generic but it's the only part where the author can raise this novel into a decent read, the other parts are Slice of Life (and there is alot, more than plot progression) which I despise with a passion.

The author has potential but he needs to learn how to improve his characters so that they have personality, present the world so that it doesn't feel like I'm reading a geography textbook aimed at ADHD kids and actually make his Slice of Life segments more interesting. <<less

This is kind of a villain protagonist story without an edgey MC, thanks to the presence of Darcia; the mother. Van, the MC, does get revenge on the people that wrong him and anyone he cares about, but is very patient and easy-going about it. Even towards the 100 other reincarnated classmates, Van will not harm them unless they threaten him first. He even creates new species of monsters and undeads.

The author is really talented in making horror themes into comedic scenes. It's really interesting how the other worlds plot lines merge together later on. After Van dies in the Origin world, he unknowingly leaves behind a cult of death that wrecks havoc on the heroes bringing the world on the brink of world war and the hero organization fragmented with factions as well as diminished credibility worldwide to name a few accomplishments. The side characters are really fleshed out, but interesting although some people might call it slow paced.

Also, this is a harem. No doubts about it. Interestingly enough, the author does not emphasize v**ginity as much as other Japanese authors do. A large portion of the heroines and women are not virg*ns, plus the concept of marriage does not apply to monsters and demi-humans. The MC, Van, has a fetish for muscles and likes navel piercings. To Van, being the underdog for life that he has always been sees muscles as a symbol for strength.
