F University’s two most attractive men, Wang Guangning and Zhang Lingyi, constantly competed with each other regardless in what aspect.

Whether it was appearance, talent, popularity or even the number of abdominal muscles, they always contested with each other. Even the woman they pursued was the same.

Yet, these two xiao cao¹ who had self-proclaimed themselves as peerless in the aspect of love were completely rejected by the same woman.

Hence, they decided to retaliate against society by becoming gay.

They set an agreement to be gay for thirty days and even especially downloaded the list from the internet, thus preparing themselves to follow these standards in order to become a proper gay couple.

For example:

Watching a movie together…Hey, shou shou, remember to lean on my shoulder when you see a frightening scene, alright?

Warming their hands together in the same pocket…Hey, don’t wear that large military jacket outside, it’s really embarrassing!

***

By learning how to be gay from an unreliable guidebook for couples, two straight guys clash and end up with an unexpected outcome.

Their thirty days agreement has finished, yet can they truly return to their former lifestyles as if nothing ever happened?

[1] 校草: the male counterpart of 校花. It’s used to describe the most attractive guy of the school.

(Disclaimer: less positive, somewhat miffed rant incoming)

I've realized that one of the reasons I prefer fantasy/ancient settings to modern-day settings is that... modern-day settings tend to have an underlying current of h*mophobia and other negative stereotypes.
Sadly, nowhere is this more obvious than this story "Agreement of Being Gay for 30 Days".

In fact, this story hits every single one of my "Most Cringeworthy Plot Points in Danmei".

1. "Oh I'm not actually gay, I'm only in love with you" --> bruh that's not how sexuality... more>> works. Can we get just one--just one--modern-day BL novel without the obligatory crisis of sexuality?

2. Related to number 1... Are there any other actually homos*xual characters besides the main pairing? Congratulations, they're irrational beasts who commit s*xual harassment and get beat up by the main characters as punishment!

3. The extremely cringe-worthy arguments over "omg I want to be the gong in the relationship!! Being the shou sucks and deserves to be made fun of."

I'm begging you, no one besides uninhibited fujoshis actually uses the terms "gong" and "shou" in real life. These two terms are fraught with homophobic and misogynistic undertones.
In this case, the ML kept rubbing it in to the MC that "lol we decided you're the shou by a coinflip! So for the rest of your life you better keep acting like the girl in this relationship."
"Oh, you got angry because I kept referring to you with this term you clearly don't like? haha you're so cute~"
I'm sorry, but that isn't cute or heartwarming in the slightest.

Literally every single time the ML called the MC "shou shou~" or otherwise kept using those terms, my hairs literally stood up on end. I legit wanted to kick the ML's teeth in so he never used those s*upid stereotypes again.

(Corollary to number 3: characters start out with their own unique personalities, but those personalities get warped and corrupted over time until they fit into the stereotypical "gong" and "shou" dynamics. In particular, the ML suffered because the author decided his only personality trait was "becoming a stereotypical gong")

4. Are there any female side characters? Congratulations, they are all extremely shallow/air-headed and don't feel like real human beings at all! They are either ungrateful gold diggers, squealing caricatures of fangirls, or the most stereotypical of fujoshi.

Okay, let me stop my ranting and take a deep breath.

I mean, it's not completely unsalvageable.
Looking on the brighter side... this novel did have quite a bit of funny and cute banter between its main characters, especially during their adorable rivalry moments. (At least, I enjoyed the banter when it did not involve the words "gong" or shou".)

As an extension of this, I much preferred the MC to the ML! The MC acted way more like a real human being as opposed to a walking stereotype.

And the parts of the plot not involving the above four irritating points were executed okay, at least if you like the "sheer fluff" genre.

Overall Comments:

I wanted to give this story a fair chance. I tried to avoid those four irritating points I mentioned, and attempted to finish reading for the plot alone.

Yet every single chapter, I found my eyes rolling to the back of my head at the next "shou shou~".

In addition, the plot really wasn't anything to write home about. There were the usual s*upid misunderstandings, bickering over girls, and otherwise "denying your own gayness."

Do not read this novel unless you:

-Enjoy modern-day slice-of-life

-Enjoy soap opera dramatics

-Enjoy the Fake Relationship trope

-Enjoy the bickering between rivals dynamic

And last but not least...

-Can tolerate the aforementioned four irritating points of h*mophobia, misogyny... basically, how the writing is full of shallow stereotypes. <<less

Two straight guys falling in love with each other in a month? You eye-rolled at the thought didn't you? Lol, so did I.

Most modern BL have zombies, super possessive gong, white lotus shou, and exploding s*xual tension. This doesn't.

This story bravely tries to entertain you with the idea of two proud males, clumsily befriending each other, going from sworn rivals to unlikely good friends to vulnerable marshmallows wanting something more from the other. BUT SOCIETY.

They are hilarious together, they are so sweet to each other and I am damn jealous... more>> of them. #Relationshipgoals <<less

Honestly, this story is good for people that wants to read stories that have light plot. It is full of fluff and the development of the characters is good. The supporting characters also contributed to the development of the main characters.

The relationship between the two main characters are a rage at first, due to them competing with each other in who will be the gong or shou. As the plot progresses, their relationship seems to get better, especially the scenes where ML subconsciously gets jealous in whoever interacts with the... more>> MC.

The different way of being a couple are also romantic. In every step, there seemed to be a understanding between the main characters. Their relationship progresses in every step and they seemed to get closer in each step.

Spoiler

The progress of the story seemed to be clichéd: enemies, agreement of being gay for 30 days, slowly understanding each other, jealousy ensues, MC fell in love, MC planned to confess but is constricted by the Plot God, MC went to Taiwan to forget, ML realizes he's in love with MC, MC came back, misunderstanding happens, ML confesses to MC, and they live happily ever after.

[collapse]

Overall, it a good story for ones that wants to have a light plot.

Ps. The *beep* scenes are hot and steamy, read at your own discretion. <<less

I honestly don't get all the 1 stars this novel was given. It was really enjoyable and the translation is great. The story has great developments, skillful pacing, unique plot line, useful comedy, and amazing characters. I don't think it really deserves so little attention.

People should give this a try, since it's a little iffy in the beginning but gradually develops later on; both translation quality and story.

i hope the translator never gives up and keep translating this work.

Hmmm

First of all, they're seriously idiots lmao. Like, not even high schoolers are as dumb as they are. But although the whole idea is their naivety of what it means to be in a same-s*x relationship, and thus their behaviours fall on the projected stereotypes, it's quite bothersome that ML constantly addresses them as "shou shou" and "xiao gong". Moreover, in this story it has a big impact in who does what, which I find pretty absurd (as in, who rides the bike etc.). To be honest, I probably wouldn't... more>> have noticed how insulting it was if it weren't for Attica's comment here.

ESPECIALLY SAYING IT PUBLICALLY, MC MUST BE SO EMBARRASSED. (but also since they've made such a big deal of it I really hope ML ends up being the shou.....)

Spoiler

Dang I wanted Li Sihong to be a good guy innocently in love, but then he turned aggressive???

[collapse]

They're really idiots though lmao, especially ML. Idiots completely forgetting their objective; like what's the point of acting gay when there's no one else around? Also, the original was one act a day right? All of a sudden they're pretty much just doing whatever for 30 days. I really can't believe they were originally straight; what straight guy would make such a crazy agreement and forget its objective? It was supposed to be taking revenge on society / that girl, but they did this small thing and then forgot about it. Even the process they fell in love feels forceful especially for straight guys, it feels like oh 10 days after hanging around as good friends my lower half reacted ta-dah love.

There's a couple of inconsistencies too. For example, ML in on track team (actually I think it was first said to be soccer) and MC is on basketball. It makes sense that ML would run faster, but how could MC be less muscular?? And 4-pack abs vs the ML's 6-pack, I really find it hard to believe.

Also, the pictures are beautiful but I feel like they're not consistent about who has dark hair who has lighter? (they're really nice though)

All in all, based on ratings and recommendations I was really hoping this would be better, but it really wasn't. I was hoping it'd be as enjoyable as Everyone Thinks I Like Him or Daily Life of Campus Idol's Boyfriend, but it seriously wasn't. I couldn't even finish it before I got too irritated at the s*upidity and detachment from reality lol <<less

I love this novel. This is type of novel which I like the most. I hate the angst and a twisted plot. There is too much pain in this world like adding more salt to my life. Of course a bit of pain/angst is necessary to lead to a good happy ending. Maybe this is story isn't like real life works but as I said if I wanted to read story with more realness then I would read newspapers. Besides love find its own ways to reach two people ?.... more>> I hope the translator can update more frequently. Yeah... I know that she/he is busy but... still ? <<less

So much funnier than I was expecting. The translation for chapter 1 is a bit rough but it gets better and this story soon had me laughing like an idiot in the middle of my Art Appreciation class. The professor was not amused. edit after finishing:

Spoiler

pro: I really liked the beginning despite some flaws. The two always bickering and the rest of the school misunderstanding their "dates" as battles was pretty funny and I really enjoyed most of the first half.

cons: the ML starts out ok but quickly becomes annoying as his original personality is subsumed by his self-designated 'gong' role. His constant use of 'shou shou' was really disrespectful to the MC and had me grinding my teeth after a while.
it also loses most of its humor and even dips into melodrama in the later chapters, which made me roll my eyes more than once; I have very limited patience when it comes to melodrama (instead of making me cry/feel bad I usually get impatient and angry).
[collapse]

Read this for the humor and fluff, but be prepared to be irritated by the ML as the story progresses, depending on your tolerance levels. My final rating is 3.5, mostly because it had those laugh out loud moments, which won over my general dislike of the ML.

This is true development here, guys.

Actual head-strong people clash each other confused with their feelings and slowly realising they are in love. It's quite (I mean really, I'm just trying to sound sophisticated) funny and out of trope believe me, but also you can see the sceptisim in both of them - because even if they try to be intimate, everyone just misunderstands them with the previous image they set themselves as. But the characters are not weak, though our Gong is quite the scaredy-cat with a lot of (funny)... more>> childhood traumas, their ability to face a problem is not underestimated. Following a lame guide for two excellent scholarship students, this is a compliment - Extremely high IQ and low EQ lol. It's quite the syndrome which is in real life where they have problems making decisions but the author makes sure it's not dark and makes it moe moe meng meng aegyo aegyo fluff fluff. But sometimes the conversion turns way too kawaii and you just melt and you are like *asdfghjkl*. Really a read worthwhile, wish the translation speed could get a little quicker and never be dropped.

PS they are living in a world where homosexuals are accepted, so it's not that conspiring. But the thing is... they are from well-off families so all readers are scared how their parents will react ^, ^ <<less

This is really a good read. Unlike other novels that feels somehow forced, this one is a bit similar to when a snail loves. This is about chemistry, nascent attraction and a bunch of happenstance that would convince you to root for the two.

Not the best ever, not even great, but enough to pass the time. I enjoyed reading it for what it is, a shallow, fluffy, goofy BL. It is nice and short, if it was drawn out longer I wouldn't have finished. Also liked how everything was nicely wrapped up at the end.

Guess my only big complaint is that I wasn't overly fond of the 2 main characters. Their personalities were just so a-holey that I couldn't love them.

One of favourite bl

Most bl has MC/shou being feminine, soft, cute. (Which I don't like)

But here our shoushou is handsome hunk with abs who was previously straight got bend due to nemesis gong.

I like how MC isn't those *typical* type rather a strong one even physically.

ML is shameless, loyal gong with no regards to his self esteem when it comes to MC.

Adorable. There might be cliche drama in there, but it's still quite slice of life and sweet and doesn't have too much unnecessary drama. Though I was shook by the 4 year gap all of a sudden. 4 years is a long time, man. I find the MC's personality quite ideal: a little cold, a little indifferent, but still really warm and generous. MC might be a little tsundere but isn't like many other tsunderes. He quickly figures out his feelings and doesn't tease others too much before acquiescing, and... more>> he gets moved and emotional quite easily. Plus the queen shou vs loyal dog gong is the best dynamic. Especially when the shou is reasonably arrogant. ML is really sticky, though I was quite angry when he went out with that girl. But I guess he did suffer for 4 years for that one month poor decision, so he kind of got what he deserved. The parents are a little frustrating, but what can you do. Definitely recommend. <<less

The leads are very cute together. It was fun to read. Dropped this so many times but I decided to finished it now it was really good. MC that more acts like a gong than a shou (based on typical gong in cn novels) is quite fun to see and ML that loves to pampered his shoushou is so adorable.

So I still have 10 more chapters to go, but I really wanted to write a review on this one, so I won't forget. :)

Things I disliked:

  • the whole 'gay couple' being viewed as if it's different from a normal hetero one. Like come on, it's the same, it's just that the society may treat it differently.
  • the shou and gong thing - I don't know man, it's just that they are so fixed on the importance of who's the top and who's the bottom... however I found it quite funny most of the time, since them too were like hahaha lol about it later on.
  • I am not sure if I should mension it here, but I really hate the 'I was straight, until I met ----', bacause I find it quite unrealistic most of time. MC at the start is literally like
    Spoiler

'Gosh! Her b**bs!! O_O' and then he just states he's gay.

    [collapse]
I'm not sure what to think of their s*xual orientation anymore is what I'm trying to say - that's all.
Things I liked:

  • The main characters - at first, both MC and ML seemed quite boring, I mean there wasn't really much about them, but it got better really quickly!! I wished the autor worked on the character devolopment a bit more - especially the other side characters, since there is literally nothing about them...
  • The time skip. I normally dislike time skips, but this one was really needed, and it was really nice to see!
  • The translatation.
  • The fact that this is so quick and easy to read and is bout humorous and sad.
