The mystery aka the truth was the most catching component of this story. The main character is like any other chinese novel MC. Cold, ruthless but at the same time, determined and decisive. If you haven't read any other chinese novel, normally a chinese MC could be described in one sentence.

"Someone who you would be very fortunate to have as a friend and very unfortunate to have as an enemy."

Aside from the main character, the other characters are good, strong but they are not the driving force. It is like... more>> they are waiting for the MC to appear. Anyways, I don't have that much problem with the side characters.

About the villains, I haven't read the whole thing but mostly these villains are narrow minded as the only thing they want to do is to get stronger regardless of how.

Frankly, the MC's life is tragedy! At any point, somebody is trying to manipulate him and control his destiny for their benefit. For the first part the MC is weaker than the opposite side in a fight but that soon changes. However, MCs actions also become very contradictory. He on one hand wants to protect his friends, brothers etc. But on the other hand, he is ready to kill anyone without mercy. He destroyed a whole "sect" because his friend said so. Let me be clear, this is not some character that is his childhood buddy or something. No, he only met him a couple of times and knows him from way back. Those characters are not given any background/history so at least I don't feel that conflicted with MCs actions.

The power system is like any other generic chinese novel. The MCs power though is kind of unique but a spoiler.

Spoiler

The MC can take over bodies of different people and essentially create clones. Once those clones are created, he can merge them into one, to create his own body.

[collapse]

There are a lot of plot holes mainly related to power system.

Spoiler

For instance, the MC is one of the few survivors of a long destroyed clan. However, due to the special powers of the clan, he is able to utilize powers of another clan. Even at this stage, like 1200, the author/MC is confused as to which clan do they belong to. Not factually but rather emotionally. It really depends on the convenience of the plot.

[collapse]

The author would suddenly introduce some artifacts/places that were never mentioned in the last 700 chapters but are suddenly assumed to be popular.

The author doesn't know how to write romance or may be he doesn't want to. For the love of god (in this case MC lol), please give us some scenes?! Like for real. The MC is already depressed to a certain extent. The author goes to such lengths to describe beauty of some girl and she may even fall in love with the MC (for various reasons) but it never goes to the next step.

I got a little side tracked. But basically, the MC is generic, the character cast is generic. The only thing good is or rather was, was the mystery surrounding the MC's origins. I was really liking how we slowly uncover bits and pieces of the past to find out who he really is. Hats off to author to being consistent in this part for most of the time.

Spoiler

However, the author suddenly did some Aizen level sh*t and destroyed the painfully slow reveal of the MC's past for the last 1000 chapters.

[collapse]

I have dropped this at around 1300 chapters! Imagine, dropping something so close to its climax and it is because of the sh*t that author pulled. The author pulled the rug under me, threw me for a loop and essentially betrayed me. I don't think I am going to pick it up again.

Update

So, I did end up reading it again. I still stand by my words though i.e. The MC's life is truly tragic without much chance for Happiness.

Although, I will change one aspect of it which is the Villains. For the first time, most of the villains were reasonable. In fact, I am not even sure if I can call them villains.

Spoiler

For instance, at one point the MC and two other entities are fight each other, a three-way fight. All of them are fighting against each other. In fact, one has betrayed another and yet, I can't seem to hate any of them. I know why they are doing it and in fact, what they are doing is probably MC like in their own mind.

You know, I liked everything about this novel besides the horrible forced emotional moments of the novel and the hateful babbling of the author.

I despise how the author writes 4-5 paragraphs to explain the same message he wants to give to the readers so by 111 chapters I just couldnt keep reading the novel even if I tried to skip a lot of that.

I already felt the whole hundred chapters that it isn't -tbh- what I expected, what I expected in terms of that 'something' that makes me feel like I'm reading a start well planned. It looks more like, anything but that.

Then we got the intro from Er Gen, but then again, almost 200 chapters later and after a very important plot twist, the so called 'character that does bad things' is just the usual, non-different and white (piece of sh*t) knight that Er Gen plagiarizes over and over over all his... more>> books. So the example is: "Take my body.-a beautiful woman- and then help me promise you'll kill him." Su Ming the evil-"No, here clothes there you go; i'll do it for you, mwah bye cya baby."

Ah... man what a headache, I'm sure it will disappoint just as much as his other novels. Although the one that hasn't terribly disappointed me is AWWP, there's still time to change that.

1 Star for the always good quality of writing and explanation of characters, truly enjoyable.

1 Star more, for the unique characteristics of MC, for the slow yet catching "i wun mah mmrs buc" that still feels too childish but is indeed well received.

And, finally take back 3 stars for the most repititive mistakes Er Gen has and has no care for it to change it. For the ridiculous "I'm not strong en-" *achooou. sniff "-oh well look at that, I'm the strongest.". And even more for the mysterious and immortal time cultivator that makes Er Gen's MC's to have their brain go back where they were still damned foolish for a few moments. Great shet.

Hi: At the end, I had to drop it. When I saw a new forced enemy that coincidentally did just the same as MC but MC did a bit little tiny worthless bit more, I already knew where we were going. And indeed, I went to the wiki and oh f*ck, I'm outta here. The worst i've seen in Er Gen so far. <<less

I just reread this and realized I hadn't commented. PoT is not a happy story, it's an MC abuse novel so don't expect ISSTH levels of humor. It has a lot more depth than the authors' newer stories and the world-building, plot, and characterization is much richer, allowing the reader to become immersed in the world of the book, something not possible in the lighter, less detailed gag novels he's written recently. If you came here after loving AWE and AWWP than you will, most likely, hate it.

this is probably... more>> one of Er Gens' most complex and tragic stories and one of the best written, (I'm not a fan of stories that abuse the MC so it's not my personal favorite but I freely acknowledge it's better written than my personal favorite). Lots of moments in this that made me think, cry, rage and even smile once in a while. As with Xian Ni, I felt lost when I finished the story and it took a while to shake myself out of the residual mood of the story and longer before I found another novel that could hold my attention. I wanted more for Su Ming and I was confused about the end because I read two other novels first and

Spoiler

he shows up in the other stories as 'the man with the black marks on his face' and yet in this story, the choice he made seems to make any showing up rather unlikely. Unless the man is a clone of SM the same way Slaughter is for Wang Lin? On another note, I do like the explanation for where the bead came from in Xian Ni, though it made me feel sorry for the bald crane.

[collapse]

my rating for this is a 4.5 because it has its flaws but I rounded up because compare to most of the stuff out there it really is very good. <<less

so yeah let me start right off the bat with the most important points about this novel that actually made me interested in this novel:

  1. of course the most important reason was actually I became a fan of er gens novels after issth and a will eternal.
  2. the story seemed interesting in the summary and I kinda liked the idea of another approach.
  3. i was kinda bored and didnt find anything good to read anymore
so yeah those were the main reasons I actually read this novel for and you know what ? the... more>> first 300 ish chapters were kind of an enjoyable read putting aside the fact that the author tried to feed you false emotions or trying to make you cry or control your emotions (of course he failed miserably at that) I kinda enjoyed these chapter I would say I dont mind giving it 4 stars if were talking about the first 300 chapters.... but everything good has an end.

the author just went into another s*upid approach and it was actually the main reason I just dropped this worthless novel first of all I didnt like the idea of the author trying to force you to pity the MC I didnt mind that as I stated previously lets put this aside why the hell would the author do some s*upid sh*t and then just force you digest it using the excuse of the MC being destiny (of course worse nickname possible) okay we wont mind that for now it was irritating at first but you can get used to it.

after that the author did something nice the ninth summit arc I really liked that arc there was comedy in it some funny awkward scenes and the new chars they introduced all of them were likeable of course until the author just decided to end our fun and just literally drag him out of the ninth summit using the excuse of him being destiny.

now to the main reason I dropped this s*upid novel because I couldnt take it anymore:

Spoiler

so the MC was in a mountain training and a woman attacked him because he was occupying a mountain that had some sort of secret for two trides in that area after an intense fight with her he was hit with some sort of aphrodisiac and he tried to force down his urges it was good to that point but then..... suddenly out of nowhere they just introduce a new char that was sealed in the body of the MC and we never knew he even existed then suddenly a golden core appeared in his body and he became OP like hell and was able to kill anyone after raping women and sucking life force from mens heads ???? any way this was the main reason I dropped this novel it was just idiotic and I couldnt endure it anymore.

[collapse]

er gens fanboys say they like it and it cool the world foundation is good most likely on par with issth and AwE but that just got covered up after the authors huge mistake.

after this I give the novel a 2 rating even if it gets better after this I dont care the most important part in a story in my opinion is a solid foundation and steady steps and er gen just ruined one of his strongest points in his novels by creating this crap of a novel. <<less

This is my 3rd book from Er Gen, I read it mostly because I wanted more books from the same universe as ISSTH, I really liked that book. I started reading this books few months ago but after 20-30 chapters if climbing some stairs I got really bored with it and I stopped. Few months later (about a week ago) I got back to it and continue reading it. I don't really like the combat here, it just uses long names for each technique but from the description they don't... more>> make much sense. They are ok in the beginning but later it gets worse. It's not that bad, I started ignoring the combat and I liked the rest of the story. Skipping part and combat and all the reactions (at least one time when no one was around the author started writing about how some people may have reacted if they were there.. It was really funny) made the read much better and much much faster so it went really well until the time has come for the MC to leave his home planet. Most of the authors of cultivation novels (that I read so far) have poor astronomy knowledge, but I think this book beat all the records. Basically here everything related to space is a "galaxy". So far I saw it used for: solar system, orbit, simple outer space between stars, nebula, empty space between galaxies (or I guess that's what it was.. The author talked at that time about a "galaxy with no stars", I'm guessing that this was what he was talking about but I can't tell.. That expression makes no sense at all), and many other uses that I had no idea what they were supposed to be. After some chapters I started just skipping any paragraph that had the word "galaxy" in it. I had enough of trying to make sens of what it was supposed to be. It's too bad because I kind of liked the main story but all this problems made it hard for me to enjoy the book. I barely managed to continue reading it because I wanted to see how it ends. If you don't have a problem with what I said above then it's an ok book to read, if not then I don't recommend it. <<less

I consider this is one of the few must reads, regardless of the ratings.

The novel is extraordinary in the sense, that it goes way outside of the standard cultivation mold that 99% novels here use. The first 200 chapters are just an introduction to the deep themes, that the novel goes into. The underlying plot of MC not knowing his past, sometimes not being in full control of his destiny with powers the level of gods pushing him around, him fighting against it, the theme of life and death, reading... more>> past and predicting future, how one deals with his destiny...

Not giving it 5/5, because I find the cultivation of MC a bit of a mess... great ideas like the painting, dreams, marks, creation and wills get side lined for a much less interesting cultivation techniques. Also the romance is bitter so far.

So for me a 4/5 must read. Some ideas in the story are extraordinary and you don't want to miss them. <<less

Er Gen's worst story by far. If it wasn't an Er Gen story I wouldn't have wasted hours of my life to push through to chapter 120+, which is the word count equivalent of reading 4-5 ordinary novels.

The world is boring, the cultivation system is boring, the MC is boring and too much of the story is a forced attempt at making you feel emotional through overdescribed disasters and the MC's constant reminiscing. Some of the fights are also like a badly dragged out season of DBZ.

There are good bits... more>> but overall it just isn't worth the effort.

I'm glad Er Gen has gotten 100x better since he wrote this. <<less

The translator says he called them berserkers because they are highly civilized.
?????
I don't understand how a tribe which bathes in the blood of enemies as part of a ceremony could be civilized.
He says they are very advanced in technology.
They don't even have houses that can protect them from cold without piling hides on all walls.
They wear clothes made out of hides too.
Far behind 1st century AD for sure?

They are most definitely barbarians. They only reason to change it would be to avoid the awkwardness of the MC who in 1st person refers to himself as a barbarian. Of course there's also the fact that the transition can become unique because both Wuxiaworld transition of ISSTH and the previous transition of this novel call them Barbarians.
XD

The transition is subpar compared to Wuxiaworld's transitions of Er Gen's works.
Everything should be edited thoroughly because certain grammatical errors make certain clauses completely meaningless.

Secondhand version of Renegade Immortal.

The Author placed little effort into writing this novel. You can tell by how forced scenarios occurs in this novel. The fight scenes enemies just happen to appear at just the right time and are close to his cultivation level. The Romance is forced by a cliche she gets captured and he saves her scenario, then they have feelings for each other wow never saw that coming. The comedy is not funny but the characters are decent. The main problem is that Er gen moves the... more>> plot along by forcing scenes to occur. Er gen's worst novel by far

Read 20-50 chapters to see if you like it or not. If you don't like it bh then drop it there are better novels out there.

Decent read imo, good fights & war scenes. Romance is again terrible as per usual with Er Gen. Ending was rather convoluted, as to say it wasn't at all satisfying to say the least. Overall too tragic of a story for me to fully enjoy as MC can never seem to catch a break in regards to his loved ones from the start and right through to the end.

All in all I would not read this again.

It's overall a great novel. The only issue is that some parts in the middle get a bit tiresome to read, and an always stronger foe every single time got a bit annoying at some point.

That aside, it is a great read. Not as many funny moments as ISSTH, but this book came before ISSTH, and it was just after Renegade Immortal, so that's understandable. It's also great that there were very few face slapping moments.

Definitely give it a read. And also consider reading:

  • Renegade Immortal
  • I Shall Seal The Heavens
  • Reverend Insanity
  • Lord of the Mysteries
  • Shadow s*ave
  • Monarch of Evernight
  • The Second Coming of Gluttony

Story starts off nice where you can find young MC yearning to start cultivation.i like the story except for his repeated emphasis on his past kind of boring.i like how romance was subtle yet interesting despite not given enough space. He have not lived for atleast 3000 years, destruction befell on them. He doesn't have time to enjoy his glory. In the end he survives and lives for endless years more like depressed suisidal teenager wanting bring everyone back to life. It sounds more like bad ending to me despite... more>> becoming eternal existence.i like bald crane character most. He always enjoys his life most. Very loyal too. Not a bad read but not great either. A fair bit of padding but not unusual for the genre. Repetition and genre standard cliches abound so this novel isn't breaking new ground.

The main character is reasonably well developed but after 1000 chapters, his motivation remains superficial. The description and action that he takes are a bit incongruous. "He left all sentiment and cut all ties... only to rescue someone he should hate (pretty woman, of course, par for Er Gen where main characters are not allowed to mu*der young, pretty... more>> women only middle aged, old, ugly women) one chapter later for no particular reason. Males look at him wrong and the MC kills them but pretty women who betray him are sentimentally attached.

Felt like the author ran out of new ideas by the mid 500s chapter as each arc is a basic repeat. The bad guy dies, not really, it was only a clone. Same bad guy dies 200 chapters later, not really, it was a part of his soul. Same bad guy dies 200 chapters later, not really, his magical treasure which he had kept 10, 000 years ago kept part of him alive etc etc.

By chapter 900, it becomes a slightly dreary rinse and repeat. Go to forbidden area, walk straight in, discover some secret, fight some battle (usually by punching - evidently this is one-punch man) with someone 2 levels higher but gains some serendipity and wins (through his BURNING willpower - ie willpower with no cultivation, arts or technique always win for the MC). This becomes a bit lazy after the third hash through.

Through a lot of words, the author tries to convey a complex universe with multiple paths and "realms" but the contrivance also breaks down the fourth time the MC discovers "another realm above the highest". Yeah, we get it, the Dao is eternal but that is no excuse to make each arc seem that way too. The supreme to the master to the paragon to the... The problem isn't the higher power level but that there is no "foundation" to the power levels - ie it doesn't get deeper philosophy or insight - it is simply "more powerful". <<less

This is a cultivation novel with... not much cultivation? There is a mystery component with lots of foreshadowing. Anyway.

The power progression is weird. MC goes from unable to cultivate to strongest in the first arc. This happens semi-gradually with a big deus-ex bang at the end, so much that MC has to be forcefully relocated for the story to go on. In second arc, MC joins a sect (that somehow does not want OP MC members?) and is strongest [within his age group] the next day. Not that it means... more>> much, just there is not much suspense. It just happens - oh hey bam I'm stronger - and the focus is not quite on how it happens. This is quite unlike other works by this author where cultivation was explained in more detail and progressed in a saner manner.

So at this point I'm not sure what I'm reading this novel for. I wanted to read another cultivation novel (after taking a break from them). But this is not really one. There is not the satisfaction of OK, the MC cultivated really hard for this goal now.

There are plenty of things the MC has a personal interest in, yet he seems to be making no efforts to look deeper into them.

I liked Er Gen's other works (much) better than this one. This one does not resonate with me so far. <<less

Overall a very good novel once again by Er Gen. It kept me entertained binge reading for days.

Spoiler

My only complaint is the last 200 chapters or so. I didn't really like how the world ended (thought it was pretty boring)

The final chapter was good though, I like how it tied in with the universe.

In short, a good novel from a well-known author. The plot, world-building and overall atmosphere are as good as you would expect from Er Gen, but, unfortunately, it lacks balance and an organic development of the story. It is definitely still worth reading though.

This novel could very easily be a reflection of my own life, for it is the tale of some guy who just sits around all day reflecting on his lack of control over his own life and destiny without actually doing anything about it. I feel "Waiting... more>> for the Truth" would be a much more accurate title for this novel, as there is no actual pursuit.

The plot is very deep and exciting; the world is well developed and feels completely integrated with the story; the characters have their own motivations and desires, making them interesting. This is something shared by most of Er Gen's stories, but unlike his other works, this novel feels unbalanced and the development of the plot feels somewhat forced because of the (in) actions of the main character.

The constant twists and turns of the story, the revelations, and the mysteries which follow the development of the plot make for a very interesting story but too many of these, one after the other, and the novel might feel convoluted, dense, or even tedious. While other novels from the author managed to successfully combine and balance this with periods of exploration, emotional development of the character, or simply some comedic relief, this novel lacks any of it.

The major factor behind this is the main character being too fond of just sitting around and whining about his life and his destiny without actually doing anything about it, reflecting on some cultivation path which he has no knowledge of hoping inspiration will strike or someone might solve it for him, somehow, instead of going out into the world and organically developing these theories through hard work and experience; or, well, simply sitting around for the sake of sitting around, until some other character or major event has to, sometimes literally, drag him out of the comfort of his mat to move the plot along, only for him to completely overreact about it.

Spoiler

As soon as Su Ming leaves Dark Mountain, he just sits around in a cave until the plot forces him to go to the city, to sit down again at the kid's family, to sit at the inheritance cave, and so on and so forth until some character has to quite literally take over his body from his sitting position in a mountain and drag him to a fight with his enemy, just to later go back to sitting at the frozen island, the mountain again, the pocket realm and the pocket realm within the pocket realm, virtually missing every event in the place... a volcano, a meteorite, another planet... You get the idea.

[collapse]

Overall the story is quite good and it makes up for most of the development deficiencies but it has to be mentioned because it makes for some very annoying moments and a somewhat uncharismatic main character.

Spoiler

Even in the ending the "dao of sitting down" is but reinforced. To finally be able to leave the world within Xuan Zang, the author makes us believe that Su Ming manages to comprehend his dao through his relations with others, but it is painfully clear the only reason he can transcend is that he knows by taking possession of Xuan Zang's body he can just sit down on a compass drifting in the void for millions of years without anyone bothering him, thus achieving the ultimate goal of his dao.

This novel has parts where it’s four stars and parts where it’s very bland two stars.

Su ming is the opposite of filial, most Chinese novels bend over backwards to proclaim how filial the MC is even with dead relatives.
His personality which is offend me the slightest (not smiling and greeting) is deserving of having your entire race killed.

Su Ming frequently can’t see the forest for the trees.
Cultivation realms in this novel are all over the place. Beyond berserker soul is life 4 realms, earth and heaven, world planes, lunar / solar kalpa, plus renegade immortal realms and there all interchangeable but are not the same. So when the MC has a bunch of different clones practicing different cultivation the clone could meet someone 3-4 realms above him but curb stomp them because he has other clones in another galaxy.
The use of galaxy and true worlds unlike other er gen works which all happen inside a single galaxy this novel has over 100, 000 galaxies. A true world isn’t a world but more of a small galaxy or very large solar system.
Read any other Er Gen novel but this one is left alone unless your stuck in covid lockdown looking for done to pass time.

Ignoring the negitive reviews I started to read it because it is one Er gen novel.I knew it would at least have a proper storyline and it does not dispoint. Story goes on slowly but develop in a direction you would not have considered in the starting chapter's. Story development is slow than some but it's arc are still interesting. Pretty boring novel.

I haven't read any of the authors previous works nor have I any hatred towards QI or this site.

I am usually not the type to drop a novel because of its slow start, if I were I would have gave up on LOM, I'm loaded with Passive skills, My house of horrors etc. Which now that I have read I would have regretted dropping them.

But I doubt I will get that feeling for this novel. There are some novels which I have read half or 60% of and... more>> still felt nothing and I suspect this to be one of them. (E.g Super Gene, Chrysalis, The legendary mechanic)

I am not feeling any empathy towards the MC when he loses someone or thinks he loses someone or he is separated from someone or he breaks someone's promises. I don't get why no one has ever heard about the concept of pills yet, so far even in the mid size tribes but the rock thing he has has doors which unlocks only after feeding it pills.

So many mediocre to boring scenes, I don't recall anything interesting happening at all.

I promise to update my review if I un drop it. <<less
