A really good read, and wonderfully written. Would not ever, read again though.

It's a HE for sure, no doubt about that. The first half of the story was ML being a player denying his feelings, while MC knew ML was a player but decided to "bear the pain". Your typical scum male cheap shou trope, except ML doesn't do anything particularly bad. There are a few moments of dub-con, but it's honestly subject to interpretation.

In the latter half...

Spoiler

They go through push and pull when war arrives, and ML being business-minded pro-Japanese and MC being a Chinese patriot, they separate. Over the following year, ML treats it as a "silent war, " but eventually MC is to move away, and ML realizes his feelings as MC is about to leave him for real, so to speak. He doesn't confess his feelings, however, as he thinks MC has moved on. In the next following months after that, ML attempts to forget MC, doing business overseas, but when a flood hits where MC lives, he rushes back and rescues MC. They then get back together, and ML abandons thoughts of moving out of the country, promising to stay with MC forever.

[collapse]

Ultimately, that is where things start to go downhill

Spoiler

We get a few chapters of bliss and happiness, then, China is liberated from the hands of the Japanese, and the communist era begins. ML gives all his properties to the government, and for a while, things are okay as he's praised for it. The author goes into a full overview of Communist China. To put it short, MC and ML struggle. They subsist of porridge and food stamps; ML is apprehended by the government and subject to torture and beatings, MC, as a teacher, is pulled out onto the streets and subject to "struggle sessions" where students were incited to beat their teachers. Their house is vandalized, and bricks are thrown through the window. Life continues on like this, until the last chapter. The pair die in old age (ML of cancer, with MC following in grief) , and join each other on the dreamy road in their past-life forms, walking off into the horizon.

[collapse]

My thoughts overall...
Spoiler

The book was deeply enjoyable up until the post-war communist revolution starts. Then, it just becomes hard to read. It's really well-written, but, having read the prequel, I can't help but feel desolate. Their sufferings in the previous life, seem no less than their sufferings in this life. I suppose what the author tries to emphasize here, is that, this time, they have each other.

But I can't help but think, realism is great and all, but this book was supposed to feel happier. IMO, realism works best for BE novels. True, in this life, the protagonists lived each day content, even as they suffered. Yet, I couldn't help but hope, that they didn't have to go through this. With how they suffered in their previous lives, the new life would be easy after they resolve their romantic differences. That they could live in blissful wealth, to want for nothing, without struggle. Because they deserve it.

Yet, the characters still suffer. This time, they support each other through historical tragedy, as they are beaten down and abused by the Communist government and its people. As they've done nothing wrong, but are punished nevertheless.

The ending is poetic and beautiful, as they meet in the afterlife in their past forms, but... between the ending and the first half of the book, it read to me as a tragedy. A muted tragedy, where the reader can only watch as the text passes by, as the main characters are given no place to escape. Because you can't escape a country that's walled itself off from the world.

[collapse]

Even if the ending is happy for the main characters... for the readers, or for me at least, I can't help but feel bitter.

It is a HE indeed, but it is a HE set in a world of depressing realism. <<less

If you're looking for angst with hints of historic tragedies and complications in relationship- with a HE this is recommended for you.

5/5 would recommend. Especially if you're just looking for a novel to bawl your eyes off into. Although tragic in its theme it's a HE and the conflicts are resolved well in the ending. It's not rushed and quite well paced by the end. Initially it took a while for the relationship to develop, but once it did they quickly resolved they're complications and end up together.

This story could... more>> be read in one sitting and its a very good read. This is highly highly recommended for people who are looking for angst that isn't a slow burn. The story is filled to the brim with angst, with a sprinkle of fluff by the end. This is great for readers looking for angsty short bl novels with a HE for both the MC and ML.

And also- the smut is great. So if you're looking for angst+smut, this is super recommended for you. <<less

I always want to read it but put it behind my mind. Maybe bcuz the the novel cover. The novel is best I have read. I have no idea who rating this novel 1 star. They probably did not read it. The novel like this love at first sight, stalker, straight men, enjoying each other, and old married couple. If the novel isn't your cup of tea of straight forward detail s*x scene; don't read it. The author know it stuff. But... yeah really mostly s*x scene in middle of... more>> the story line. Later it got better. I only wish the story tell more about character personality. <<less

Rarely do you see a novel that tells you what happens after "happily every after". This novel (if you also count the prequel), takes you from a tragic past life, to an initially controversial romance which became one of the greatest love stories I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Though their lives were filled with so much peril, it gave off such peace because of their great love for each other. I'd say the title is wrong, because even death couldn't take them away from each other

Words can't express how much I love this story. It's amazing.

The characters they're real, they feel, they act like real people, they struggle and make mistakes, they're insecure and vulnerable. Character growth throughout the entire story is brilliantly done. Shen Liangsheng at the beginning is a scummy guy and even if we know why he turned out to be like that we can't really support his actions but we take this journey with him and see how love changes him, how he's oblivious at first and then denying it only... more>> to come to accept his own feelings and become a better person to be with the man he loves, finally opening up to him completely. It's honestly inspiring.

Just like in their previous lives they suffer immensely and go through many, many difficulties but this time around they have each other.

I never cried over happy endings and I didn't cry reading Living to Suffer but I sobbed at the last couple chapters of this novel. It really touched my soul. A short story like this being able to convey what many 200 chapters long novels can't.

And I want to image that after the ending

Spoiler

They'll reincarnate again in another world and will live a happy care free life together like they've always wanted since they deserve it and they worked so hard for it. When at the very end they walk towards each other wearing ancient robes I want to imagine it's a sign that they finally atoned for the mistakes of their past lifes and their future incarnations will all be peaceful.

5 stars.! All the stars!! Waterworks. I’ve never cried this much with a book. I’m still crying when writing this. It’s a beautiful story throughout difficult historical times. It was very interesting to learn more about the history of China, and frequently I would catch myself reading about the historical happenings cited in the book

Ahhh! I read this sequel after 2 year wish had read it before. It was so good & realistic that it couldn't be more than that!! Loved it. It was a long time, I felt this much satisfaction after finishing a novel. Even though it HE it gave a bittersweet after taste but in a good way. The prequel was also good but this one is Best! Must mention both had outstanding smut!!! ( ꈍᴗꈍ) Loved both MC & ML. MC had a frank personality but when it's time for... more>> something he wanted to do, he was so stubborn! ML was amazingly calculative & decisive. But he had a great character development, which shows love truly can change someone. (*^3^) /~♡

I thought it would be some cliche story where scumbag ML would hurt MC emotionally after making him for him, then after MC suffered great would leave ML, & he would regret bla bla bla! And I'm glad I'm proven wrong.୧| ͡ᵔ ﹏ ͡ᵔ |୨

If you had heartache after finishing prequel this one will thoroughly heal and soothe you! ♡ (˃͈ દ ˂͈ ༶ ) <<less

This novel wrecked me. Such a great body of work, I can’t believe it was only 27 chapters. Honestly, I don’t think I could read it again because it made me too emotional even though it was a HE. The ending becomes bittersweet because we’re seeing what happens after the “happily ever after” and see them age. It’s just really emotional to witness.

This felt so real, so so real. Before they got to the flood part it still felt like a novel but after that I felt like I was living a real life alongside them.
If I saw some of the places referenced in this novel irl right now I would probably just break down in tears. I hurt for Tientsin.
Every-time I read a novel like this one it feels like I’m living a other other life and when it ends I feel like a part of me has died.

Now, when I say this, I speak for both the prequel and TDDUP-

I haven't read a book so investing and so incredibly wrecking yet gorgeously woven despite being so short.

The prose invokes in the readers a sense of dread that they cannot escape from but also ironically makes them anticipate what's to come and consume them.

I never delved into Chinese history, its legacy, or its past suffering (ignoring the little information we are fed in school), and though TDDUP is more romance and angst and less politics and history, it... more>> was thought-provoking and educating, making it a worthwhile read. I cannot praise the author enough for how incredible they were at their job, and I am at a loss trying to figure out how the translator managed to give us such a fantastic piece of work with no loss of its original essence (even if there was a loss, this book couldn't have been translated any better IMO).

This book was too hot and racy for a good portion of many chapters, which could have been replaced with some drama or plot instead, but even that was so well written that I cannot complain. But I do, in the back of my mind, wish the story was longer, not because I didn't want the book to end, but because the characters were so well written that they had the potential to have more to their names than just lovers (but that doesn't make this any less of a read).

The author knew how to stab us in the heart and heal it just to stomp on it again. They were a total sad*st but also a savior, and I want to worship them-.....

Ahem... coming back to the point, the story itself is filled with romance and more romance. So if you are here for a more dramatic plot, I still suggest you give this a shot for the experience of it (mainly because the last few chapters are a bit of a thrill when reading). I cannot for the life of me think of any plot holes that I could have possibly come across, but a book cannot exist without its drawbacks, and this one is no exception. There were parts in the story that I wished happened differently or didn't happen at all, for the sake of morality, but the story's writer is their own person and is free to express what they want, and I wouldn't read this book any other way.

The pacing of the book was a bit rough. It was by no means slow but was a bit too speedy at some places. Despite being a HE, it is still quite a tragic read, and the book should come with a 'Will lead to overuse of tissues' warning.

I would say 'it's your loss' if one decides not to give this book a go, but that's also because I am incredibly biased. <<less

My eyes and nose are still hurting. I've just completed the whole 27 chapters within 24 hours.

After reading Living to Suffer, you've will not expect the hidden meaning of how these two books are related.

I will summarize few pointers. As these are the solid points that touched my heart to a point my Sinus allergy is reacting so badly now.

  1. Spoiler
    • This book compliments the balance of the previous one. If you've read LTS, the ending itself is the other around for this book's ending. Which I FEEL is the most satisfying thing ever. The most satisfying read I've ever completed. As a Chinese who walks down the path of believing in Buddhism, we always believe reincarnation wheel. Yes, with that we believe every couple who ended up together in this current lifetime was because of the debts that has not been settle from the past lives. Now this book, at the end of it, you will summarize that their debts, were paid off, peacefully.
    • Emotional: Smut (5/5) Fluff (5/5) Of course I love these two genres. The more it has the better for us (readers) to fully understand the MC and ML's point of view and their true feelings. There were chapters without it, it kinda stretch for few chapters. And when I saw the chapters with NSFW tag, I could finally breathe, not cuz of le*dness but because, both of them decided to work things out again. May it be physical or emotional. This is what character developments is about. Now I've also learnt from this book whereby, one should never bottle too much of thoughts. Take these two leads for example, both had alot of unspoken thoughts towards each other, whereby they assumed the other latter will not be comfortable of the thoughts. With all these accumulations prospected, it became negative feed for their hearts. So when shyts actually hits the fan, the negative thoughts wrapped up their decision making result. Which ended up, "I've should have-, I shouldn't have-", but it was never too late for both of them. Thank God.
    • This plot took place in our history books, the timeline itself were harsh realities that happened back then, which is terrifying every time I read'em. But then again, bare in mind, like what I've mentioned from point no.1 it is related as well. The debts that SLS paid back were in alot of forms, from monetary to emotional to consents and etc. Which was why, all the events that happened, made him realized how much in love he was towards CC. It doesn't need to be wealth or networks earned from vanities. All he need is him.
    • At the middle of the plot, when they both were away for sometime, CC said this to himself, whereby he wasnt sure why did the relationship fell out. Maybe because in his past life he gave too much, or in this life he'd forgotten how to love someone properly. Since his parents left him at early age. He never thought of needing it in life. Which was true, again from Living to Suffer's plot, he did. He really did..
    • What hit me the most to caused my choked sobs turn into waterfall, was the years stated in the chapters. It hit me so hard to a point, with all those histories stories coming wave after wave, my two boys had grown gray to white hairs. It was not easy for them. Judging from my current century of living, whereby we have internet and etc. They had none of those. The daily lives of reading newspapers, watching theaters, crosstalk from a small stage, reading books, planting trees, those were the peaceful time to go aby in live. They both had it. I am so happy that the boys went through toughest time. In a flash, it was 1918, gosh... this is why I always treasure antique items and old fashion letter writing and such.
    [collapse]
So I would like to finalized my love for this novel, it was the greatest journey with them. As they ended it how they started, I am grateful to be able to find this masterpiece in my current life.

Will I re-read again? : Yes, maybe in far future, where the current world change it course again. <3

It's a HE but still makes you cry, A LOT!

It's such a beautifully written story. The encounter during their youth and then struggling together side by side during war and holding hands till their old days.

It has bittersweet mood in the whole story. And the last few chapters wreck me so bad, but it's really beautiful.

Oh. My. God.

This danmei is so underrated I can’t even describe how beautiful the story is in proper words. I love the historical aspect that enriched the entire plot, it’s not too much, but enough to move the story forward. What’s captivating me more is how realistic this danmei is. I can imagine it could happen to anyone during that time. The author did a great job showing how deep their loves towards each other, the devotion, the longing, and the smut scenes are perfect too. This novel is a... more>> work of art. Don’t sleep on this danmei. Read it. You won’t regret it. <<less

the work was written in a more heavy-historical aspect, so it's not a light read you can skim through. The translator did an excellent job and carried over the style from the original to english. That being said, it's a beautiful novel that really does feel like you are traversing the timeline of their journey with the two main characters.

no smut for the first 7-9 chapters (i didn't count this is based on intuition) then smut for like 15 or so middle chapters and the last chapters are just good... more>> wholesome relationship depression.

it has an HE but will still make you cry <<less

Damn this novel is soooo beautiful ?? I actually expected to cry as much as I cried when I read the prequel (dang, I sobbed like a baby back then) but no, I only shed a tear or two at the very last chaptee because talk about BITTERSWEET! Ooooh, I'm so happy for our couple too, they finally have their happy ending after all the trials they had been through T___T THEY AND THEIR LOVE FOR EACH OTHER PREVAIL AND I'M JUST SO HAPPY FOR THEM T____T

A few things I... more>> appreciate in this novel are:

  • I really see/read our characters grow: literally and figuratively, in all aspects of their being and I am so proud and touched by the novelty of it.
  • This is actually the fist BL novel I have read where it showed that the couple remained strong until the very end of their lives and I love it. I mean, most BL I've read so far are about the couples being together at the peak of their lives and only a foreshadow of a promise that they'll be together until they grow old. But this novel, it really showed how the couple grew old and the challenges they have to face and, just dang, I love it.
  • After the prequel, it really puts me on ease that yes, THIS IS FINALLY THEIR HAPPY ENDING. AND IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
  • THIS NOVEL IS A MASTERPIECE AND NOBODY CAN CHANGE MY MIND.

Overall: 4.3 of 5

Having read the prequel "Living to Suffer" prior to this one, overall the whole series is good. This story have more worldviews as it's based on actual historical events then the prequel, which is wuxia-based. But, aside from that, the romance is written well. What I'm most surprising, though not really as I've gotten a sense of the author's writing style from the prequel, is that the smut does not disappoint. Which is why I struggle between giving a 4, but decided to give +0.3 due to... more>> the endless smut feast (& the end). If I must say, they never really leave the bedrooms. Lol

The only reason I couldn't give this a rate of 5 is because, although very well written, just to my personal preference, I wasn't able to truly be invested in the MC's and ML's love and devotions emotionally because all we ever read is about them between the sheets. Don't get me wrong I love the smut details, love it, but I feel everything outside it have too little details besides what needs to be written to propel the plot, rush to the next smut scene. Idk, maybe it's just me being unable to resonate with the emotional aspect of the love story to really feel the heartache or roller-coaster of emotions. I mean I love this type of devoted love story, I still understand that the MC and ML both have settled down their differences in love and is devoted to each others by the end, but emotionally by the end I'm still unable to get invested. It might just be due to the writing style. My heart is just unable to be moved. Using the words of the ML from the prequel, my heartbeat still goes badoom badoom, the pace is steady and regular.

Saying all that, I still enjoy the story. The ending did get me to shed a little bit of tears because I'm still a sucker for this type of full devotions love story. <<less
