Mu Huanqing despised two people in her life. – The first was the Emperor, who had terrible matchmaking skills; the second was the Duke of Zhen Yuan, who was forced into a marriage with her due to the imperial edict. He did not like her and had contempt for her family, the Mu family, for using this marriage to climb up the social ladder. Because of Mu Huanqing, he couldn’t marry his sweetheart and could only make her a lowly concubine.

She also didn’t care for him as she was originally living a free and leisurely lifestyle. Who knew that one imperial edict would end her happy days, causing her to be forcefully married to the cold, arrogant, and unmanageable Fu Yanlin?

Not long after their marriage, he made her move into a manor in the country side, letting her live on her own. However, she didn’t care for it and instead even gave birth to an obedient and outstanding daughter. But one day, the husband who abandoned her suddenly appeared at the countryside manor, destroying her peaceful days. He was still cold and arrogant, but a reserved air of authority was added to him as time passed. She didn’t know what type of plan he had concocted If he came to bully her treasured daughter, she would definitely break all ties with him!

The little daughter widened her innocent eyes, looking at the demon that no one else could see. “I’m scared!”

The demon gently pinched the little girl’s beautiful face: “Don’t be scared. The person your dad wants to bully isn’t you, but your mom.”

I hate male lead, he doesn't deserved MC. So disappointed that MC forgive him despite he treated her badly and abandoned. Not recommend this novel. MC should have find good man to remarry. She is s*upid and soft hearted. No matter how much ML abused her, she still forgive him. This two s*upid match well. Something wrong with brain of MC.

A cute novel that's a set-up to the sequel, but can be read as a standalone.

We start off with a demon summoned & revived by someone's virg*n blood, whom he realizes is actually a toddler. He is, understandably unhappy, since his blood contract is to help those who revive him to rekindle their love fate, as punishment for his crimes thousands of years ago. But seeing that he's attached to a toddler who isn't even old enough to have love fate yet, he's at a loss at what to do.... more>> Then he realizes that her single mother is actually the one he needs to help since she's the one whose love fate is broken (characterized by a broken red string.)

As such, he works at getting our main couple back together (the toddler's parents.) Here we meet the toddler's parents and learn what happened to their relationship before his arrival. Basically, the main couple's marriage was arranged by the MC's father. He was desperate in wanting his daughter (MC) to stay in the city so he can anchor his wife (the daughter's mother) with him at home. Both mother & daughter are a wild pair and have no interest in staying at court or tending to domestic bickerings and power struggles. By arranging his daughter to a man of court (the ML), he can successfully maintain the status quo and keep both of them hostage to the city.

The daughter, our MC + toddler's mother, is a strong, carefree and practical woman with a good head on her shoulders and expert martial arts skills. She has no regard for fighting with other wives for her husband's attention. The husband has no desire to touch her either since he's already in love with another. Unfortunately her father got wind of the fact that they never consummated their marriage, so he got the emperor to force ML to acquiesce to the deed. So he was forced to sleep with the MC. After the deed was done, his other wife blamed her miscarriage on the MC and MC had no choice but to get divorced and leave the house (of which she was greatly appreciative.) The entire time she was married to ML, she never paid him much attention nor asked him for anything. So her leaving was not a big deal to either of them. However, prior to leaving, she knew she was pregnant already but he had no clue. That brings us to the situation of why MC is now a single mother thriving in the rural countryside with daughter and retinue of servants.

The rest of the book details how the demon meddles in their affairs so they come together again, with lots of help from the toddler.

It's a very cute, shortish read and not very dramatic, which I like. No severe ups and downs. We simply see how the ML tries to win back his ex-wife and keep his cute toddler daughter with some supernatural influence from our friendly demon. <<less

This novel might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I can say it's pretty good. I didn't like the ML much at the start, as with his family, but he turned out okay and sincere in the end. I love the female lead though, she just goes with the flow and faces her circumstances head on and uses both her heart and mind before doing something.

Just give it a try, it's also a bonus that it's quite short (100+ chapters only) and easy to read via MTL.

Why 1 star?

many unresolved problems. One of them:

The concubine Lin, who trying to kill pregnant's FMC on the road and other concubine, just got a very light punishment even she is given a huge dowry if she is going to remarry later while her other crimes has not been counted.

The ML is shameless, taken more than he can give. All the hardships and torments and humiliations he gave FMC..... So unjustifiable for the FMC

[collapse]

The plot is slightly thin. All things superficial. We want real conflicts and resolutions, but all given are all easy solutions and ready-made ending. <<less

There aren't enough chapters to decide if I like this story or nor. I love the first chapter, but then we go to what happened to get to that point. And it is slow and aside from the MC and her mother, there are no likeable characters. I dislike the ML so much. I hope he isn't the real ML. I want his to suffer and be tortured by his white lotus sweetheart.

But the MC is awesome. She is a champ.

I wouldn't suggest reading this until there are more chapters.... more>> Because at the moment it's just disappointing and aggravating. You just see the MC be ignored. <<less

Mc's father is pretty sh*tty all problems start with him making this s*upid marriage happen. Don't like him at all can't believe he's portrayed as a romantic character when he literally kidnapped the MC's mom who was at the time was getting married to someone else, like WTF isn't it evil characters that behave in those ways like it really okay that men can kidnap these civilian women off the streets and no one practically says anything.

We considered the male lead as a scum bag for favoring his concubines and... more>> abandoning his wife at the start of the story. But the MC's dad does the same thing but literally worse and the author thinks that's okay, we just have to be thankful that MC's mum is a smart woman and not vain because he pampers her and does everything for her to the point of obsession to the point that the main wife and other concubines live in fear. I thought he's considered smart in court, but guess not cause stuff like that gives he's political enemies ample ammunition to criticize him. Then at the end of the story he abandons his wife, concubines and children all in the capital to live with MC's mum in the prairie like WTF what kind of irresponsible parent and husband is this guy, this dude can easily be one of those scumbag fathers protagonists in quick transmigration novels have to face slap.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's thought of killing his main wife to make way for MC's mum or eliminating anyone that has the slightest dissatisfaction with her. He loves her to the point of irrationality and obsession, this is in no way romantic or loving. <<less

This is now added to one of my favorite Chinese novels. It is cute, funny, addictive etc etc. The story is not very long as there are only 38 chapters. The ML, the MC, all the supporting characters are highly likeable. Also if you are like me cannot wait to see what happened next you can just read the RAW version. I want more of the authors novels translated and there are over 100 titles to choose from as well with varying lengths.

I'm glad I read this amidst the bad ratings. You really can't judge a book by the ratings. I personally like this book more than I thought I would. First of all, I love the demon matchmaker, He Guan and baby Doudou. I think the third book will be about them, so I'm planning to look for that. I read via a chinese site but the mtl is really easy to grasp.

It's a very short story but I find it satisfying, although I do wish there's a side story. The... more>> story is short, so the story did not focus on face-slapping. Rather, it focused on the second chance between the husband and wife. And I don't think the husband got her forgiveness easily. He did work for it, and it showed on the red string how he earned his wife's love little by little by showing his sincerity. No overbearing hubby here.

Spoiler

The ML got awarded a marriage against his will. He was set to marry someone he loves. So he married the MC but ignored her existence in his life. The MC also doesn't want this marriage but instead of acting up, she just acted calm and unworried in the harem even though he ignored her, she actually preferred it. She is right, being angry and fighting will just make you get older easily and she doesn't even care for the man, so why fight. The reason the ML doesn't like her at first is a little justified. Her father is from the opposing political party, and he forced the emperor to marry them. And their family has been rivals. Then she got set-up by the concubine, and although he knows it's a set-up, he took the chance to send her away and she asked him for an amicable separation. It's exactly what she wanted because she doesn't want to be tied up in the harem.

She really did have a good life after they got separated, until 4 years after, the matchmaking demon woke up and tried to fix their red thread as part of his mission. Their daughter played a big part in their reconciliation. It's serendipity.

[collapse]

Although he is really despicable at the beginning of the novel, he is not blind and s*upid to other's fault. Aside from ignoring his wife and favoring his concubine (who he was set to marry before the King ordered him to marry his wife), he never really maltreated her even when he sent her away (It's also what she wanted. To be free.) And although he was angry after discovering that they had a daughter and she knows she's pregnant when they separated, he never hurt her not forced her. It's how she started to care for him. He showed his sincerity.

But what I really like in this story is that there's no misunderstanding. They really just don't care about each other when they get married. They didn't know each other before marriage. The marriage was against their will. And their family doesn't even get along well. The daughter, Doudou, played a part on building their relationship. The ML fell for the MC first and worked his way to her heart. In the end, the MC liked him more and more, he got rid of all the concubines and even if he used the King to force her back into his manor, he never restricted her and let her go back to her life in the prairie whenever she wants. I think it has a very good ending. <<less

What can I say about this novel? I would have given 5 stars if the author had given us just a bit more. If I wished many times that some other novels were short, this one is the complete opposite, I feel that there aren't enough chapters!

Our MC is great in many ways and I don't know how much I wish there were more FLs like her in other novels. One thing I can say for sure is that she was born in the wrong era. I Loved how she... more>> was decisive and indifferent, especially how "clever" she was in asking for a CONTRACT to divorce/separate from the ML, Which is what I keep asking myself whenever I read a novel where the women tries to get away from the guy with just air " Ex: FL:Lets get a divorce in 1 year; ML:OK; FL:Finally I can get away from this guy;"And the girl trusts the guy just with his word and never thinks about writing down a contract. Do all of them think that unwritten promises count for anything? I just don't understand how can so many other modern FLs be more s*upid and unprepared than a woman from ancient times. It's just too bad that in our MC's case even with the paper, in that era where men were too dominant while women didn't have any rights, the contract wasn't very effective.

Her father is so selfish and even if we didn't see him that much, he is my most hated character in the novel. All of her problems were created by him. Seriously let's say you want to keep your daughter near and attached to someone so that her mother doesn't leave you. Did you have to send her to marry the son of an enemy faction? Have you thought 1 second about what kind of life she will have to endure? If someone told me the guy is not her real father, I would have believed it.

Things I wish were different in this story:

-Her forgiving the ML:
Spoiler

Even if she did forgive him, the author should have made that part of the story lengthier. But no, he had to add that devil to the plot which made the ML get her forgiveness easier than what I would have wanted. I wished so many times that that devil that acted as a cupid for the main leads didn't exist but I suppose that if they didn't get a push from him there is no way they would have met again: but still, I wish that he kept his interference to a limit. The author was too easy on the ML : If I look a things from the ML's point of view, I can understand the reasons why the ML treated her so coldly : He thinks she is a spy sent by the enemy faction's most influential member, he is forced to marry her by his enemy, he already has a sweetheart, he has to break his promise with his sweetheart... etc... Considering that his ego should be very high as this perfect ancient guy who is above all but very few, the fact that he is forced to do so many things against his will lets us understand his cold attitude but that's it. He still should have suffered a bit more and that would have definitely made the story more interesting, since if you look at it from our MC's point of view she is also forced and she is the victim in this story. What I hated the most was that just to get her, he goes and forces her again using the same method that was used on him, a method that he hated when he was forced to consummate their wedding. Seriously was that your best solution? I mean I know that by that time she is willing but still that's a NO

[collapse]
.

-Him making things right:
Spoiler

So I go from reading about the ML being so in love with his cousin that he sleeps every night with her to "she was sent back home" it felt too rushed even if the author explained why he did, there should have been a bit more necessary drama.

[collapse]
-The fact there was no 2nd ML: I always feel like something is missing when stories omit 2nd MLs because I think that they are a crucial part in the story. <<less

MC is great. Top of the line. MC's mom (although she barely appears in this short novel except by way of teachings etc.) is also great. MC's dad is utter tr*sh but he 'loves' MC's mom so he's redeamed, because, when MC tried to finally trick him into letting her mom finally! get out of the capital she hates and into the prarie, he says, nooooo! Don't leave me! I'll take you myself. He couldn't have done that before? But no! He had to be forced into it.

He manipulated his... more>> daughter into a rather awful marriage, and forced the ML to consumate (read marital r*pe) to trap his wife in the capital, because he can't be the one sacrificing, everyone else (including his wife) must sacrifice so he can have his grand 'love' affair. With the woman he stole. Boo ya.

And then he and the ML start hanging around, as he teaches the ML his ways. Wow. Just wow.

I truly wish the MC hadn't (been borderline manipulated into) finally falling for the guy. I would have liked to see him kicked to the curb a couple of times. For all that wasn't her style. Basically, men (authors) in these novels need to be taught that respecting a woman's NO is the romantic choice, not the other way around.

Honestly, the ML was not irredeemable. I even sort of liked him a bit. At first.
Spoiler

That entire debacle with him stealing his wife's horses and then 'gifting' them back to her aside.

[collapse]
I would have just liked to see him actually show his sincerity, rather than what the author thought was sincerity. I would have liked to see him actually respect her, rather than what the author thought was respect (like raising horses, bleargh! 🤮) I would have liked to see the fact that

Spoiler

the ML gave the MC the house

[collapse]

have some actual meaning. It would have been therapeutic to see her cancel his excuse of

Spoiler

"my house, I also get to stay."

[collapse]

I would have liked the MC to kick him out of the study most, actually. It was brought up several times, on how inconvenient it was for her, and then- nothing. I would have liked to see the many of the neat little details the author brought up actually used as I hoped - but no. She just calmly

Spoiler

returned with him.

[collapse]

But worse, by far, was how the MC thought that the ML behaving like her father to trap her was romantic and proof of sincerity. The hell? She's been disdaining her father all this time for his tricks, and then her husband starts learning bad habits and it's all, oh how romantic of him!

I wish that the author had taken the time to flesh out the story, but at the same time, because of these inherent differences of values, I must admit the only way I finished this was by gritting my teeth, telling myself there were only three chapters left, and skimming through all the lovey dovey moments where I wanted to punch the ML a couple of times, and find a better man for the MC. Unfortunately, according to the time period, as the MC mentioned once, he wasn't actually that bad. He (and the dad) did treat their wives (relatively) well. Even if it was like 'thoroughbred horses🤮🤮🤮' <<less
