His entire clan was annihilated when he was young, and not too long after that his parents disappeared. His marriage contract? Poof. Torn to shreds and gone up in smoke before the eyes of everyone in the city, almost humiliating his grandfather to the point of su*cide! Cultivation? No time for that, he had a family to take care of!

This is the story of Chen Xi, a youth forced to stop cultivating and instead craft talismans to pay for his younger brother’s tuition… and who, in the process, would rise to become known by all as the Talisman Emperor!

When I first read this novel I though it was a rip off of DE. I was shock this came before DE, I guess DE riff of Talisman Emperor and made it a better story.

Talisman Emperor is utterly boring. It literally put me to sleep.

HORRIBAD. stay away. origin story makes no sense. old man gave him cultivation technique YET its for a fricking body enhancement! he's a dipshite "talisman emperor" and the old ghost windbag even says so as he got the "mark of the old dingbat's former master" because of this---yet this senile old fool gave him a useless kung-fu that has no relation to his strength---being a talisman shitemperor.

next he's cultivating the saitama kung-fu right? and so he must also train for that AND do that without leaving a chance to make... more>> money, the obvious thing is to become some sort of mercenary or adventurer---since he already cultivated the body strength hoolabaloo. BUT NO! he goes to a restaurant to become a pissant version of iron chef. really? you just watched gordon ramsey and think you have the gall to become a star rank chef? YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO COOK! see its a spirit cooking thing that uses oooh otherworldly animals... oohh aahhh... and our dipshite MC knows shite about it. so what does the author do?

give him another OP FRICKING SKILL of EIDETIC MEMORY! as if his wayne manor on another world was not enough along with his alfred senile old dingbat butler that provides ancient kung-fu from a former master sensei... this idiot xiao jinyu author gives another OP skill AT A DROP OF A HAT to an already overpowered jinx faux talisman emperor (as if he's even really jinxed with how the author serves power skills to our MC left and right on a silver platter to him).

an idiotic novel written by an idiotic author. don't bother its shite. to me first impressions the last and it lasts forever... <<less

Wasn't good, wasn't bad.

The harem is extremely lacking. As is the mc's interaction with the harem.

The novel left behind a lot of plot holes and unanswered questions.

The tournaments were boring.

It seemed as if most of the novel just consisted of him running away from someone stronger than him. And it continues up until the last 4 or 5 chapters.

Overall... while it's not good, it'll sate your appetite if you're in between other novels.

I have to admit that there is a lot of good about this story. First it does not suffer from the whole numbers game that most of your standard wuxia/xainxia stories have. Example: 'MC has 14000 jin of punching force so he can easily beat someone with 13000 jin of punching force...' Second the story is actually quite decent, while a lot of people compare it unfavorably to DE I personally do not see much of a problem. Yes there is some areas where it is a rip-off, but... more>> when looking at DE it also rips off many other stories in the same genre. Authors often take inspiration from stories that they read, and while scenes from one story may have a strong match to scenes from another, it is not anywhere near the worst I have come across. I remember one that is almost a rewrite of Martial World where scene after scene was effectively the same, though with slightly different results and effects.

Now for a big problem... The name does not match the story at all. Yes the MC gets this inheritance from a past talisman immortal, but it seems as if there is almost nothing about talismans in the actual story/inheritance/ ect... First he gets some sort of body refining ability and then he starts powering up. Then he gets some sort of super-weapon that is the only thing resembling talisman usage after the first 20 or so chapters but instead of giving him much of an advantage it is just some super expensive item that seems to be just the right weapon for him to use. It is infinitely upgradeable but also infinitely expensive to upgrade. Everything else in the story so far ch450+ is just more standard wuxia/xainxia skills and combat techniques being thrown at his enemies.

One more plus is that his acquisition and learning of those techniques actually is interesting in that they follow some sort of system. The ever present MC luck is also there but it seems to play a bit less of a role than most of the standard wuxia/xainxia stories. <<less

Good start in the beginning but it start to goes down hill from there.
Spoiler

The title say talisman emperor but after a few chapters all thing relate to talisman is thrown out, their was the MC cooking part which was pretty good but never improve on. There were also how every support character except a few are kill, cripple, or just written off. I'm not saying death is bad for the story but kill most of those character is just a lazy way to not develop their character.

Update ch 258

Should not read this novel. The main character turn into more into idiot the more you read this novel. One such example is him having several way to escape but chose to continue fight other. Another one is him say he was going to do one thing then it change middle way which bring to of disaster on the MC which could all be avoid if he stay to the plan. Some other thing that the main character could have done to avoid problem is just changing his face and nobody will know it was him and he could the escape easily unlike how he show his true face everywhere inviting more problem to be found.

A very horrible novel.

No one should ever try reading this novel

What is a great shame with this novel is that the author at first wanted to follow the title "Talisman Emperor" which would follow the MC who used talismans for most part.

However to start of with it takes a fairly long time before talismans are introduced to the MC then when talismans are introduced they are shortly afterwards simply left as a simple side job? As s reader it is hard to understand why, however it turns out that because of strong opinions among the chinese readers while this was... more>> written. The author chose to pretty much remove most of the talisman part of the story and go with the usual trope. (The focus on talismans and the use of talismans in fights was found boring compared to punching people -.-)

This is a shame in my book since the author tried to be a bit inovative but because of critisim he just cut it out for the most part.

So yeah this is basically your standard CH WN, with nothing new except a lot of stuff will feel weird or forced since the story was changed to cater to the chinese readers. <<less

This story starts out very good though cliche it has a likable main lead. Just like most other Chinese webnovels he finds something special. That said he is driven and talented is his craft, he continued to be humble and intelligent when he faced his enemy's. But after the first arc in the sword immortals domain and his rapid rise in strength he became obviously more arrogant and a complete hypocrite. This may be common in a lot of CHN WB but the sudden disappearance of a good character really... more>> turned me off. <<less

The novel started out as your typically stereotypical Xuanhuan. This is where the main character is the underdog and there is someone out to get him. Only, it was a bit different in making the main character's enemy a family affair. Not only did the whole family suffer, but there was this dynamic that made it seem as if you could almost immerse yourself in the story. It was different than the usual 'main character was a cripple and so was laughed' at sort of cliche and more of an... more>> underlying plot.

That was when it all changed. The only bit of interesting details, including the portion of him being a talisman master -- which is a part of the title of the novel -- was snuffed out. After a few chapters, when cliche after cliche hit you and you still could bear through it as the handling of each cliche was done relatively well, you were then hit with a massive "Old Character and trends, bye, new character and thoughts, hi" kinda deal.

The Main Character seems to get swarmed in such happy coincidences and beneficial events. His skills improve by leaps and bounds, and not only that, it seems that with each new encounter, he apparently had already learned something that could help him solve said problem. And said solution was out of the blue. "What what? When did he learn that? When did he move up 9 levels in body tempering? What?"

The use of talismans seems to become more of an auxiliary skill. No longer something defining to his character. Besides the first five years we're told about, he doesn't learn much of anything after that about the trade, and the skill was only applicable to him for a few chapters before it was chucked to the side--only mentioned here or there. Well, the title of the novel should be Chucked to the Side Talisman Emperor.

If it wasn't for the balanced start, I would have rated it a 2 or maybe a 1.

Doesn't mean I won't continue to read if I'm really, really bored though. Hopefully, the novel does get better if I do continue. <<less

Generic, but good! Feels similar to IET's novels and I Shall Seal the Heavens, in terms of vibes. The writing's stable.

MC's unlucky... but really lucky??? Uh... XD

MC's brother seems adorable, and the cliches are working out well. The MC's cheat isn't absolutely broken, I think it'll be fun to develop.

MC's learning various crafts, but he's good at martial arts too. Powers up really quickly.

I'm interested as to whether the MC will get some good friends. He has some prospective ones, but... Hmm...

1st half of novel- unremarkable. 2nd half of novel- worth reading. This is one of the few CN novels I've fully read. Although I skipped at least half of it either because of filler or just boredom.

Book name is not the same as the contents. Its interesting during the early chapters where MC do talismans and work as spirit chef. But then it went straight to body, sword, qi cultivation etc.

MC create many talismans and even enhance them. But, the uses of talismans is inexistant. Its great when he use 3 types of talismans to save his brother earlier. But after getting ancient inheritance and spirit advisor, MC stop doing talismans. Even enemies don't use talisman.

This is the list that I found s*upid in this novel... more>> and decided to drop it.

Spoiler

1. When he was a spirit chef, to train his body, the advisor teleport him to the nearest forest. But, after an event where a hidden space he currently was destroyed and send to the same forest but at the core region. MC think that he need to increase his strength so that he can go back. What the hell happen to the advisor who can teleport him from inside city to the forest earlier. Damn author making MC can teleport for training. But no teleport to go home.

2. MC enemies are from rich families, and old monster over 1000 years old and MC can kill them. Neither of these types of enemies has life saving treasures. And the old monster is like poor beggars live a long life but then no treasure. Thats a total BS. And once again even his enemies not using talismans when a new rank 1 talismans which has same power as rank 2 being sold out when MC make them.

3. MC is called jinx and look down because MCcan only make rank 1 talismans. But the weird thing is, he know 1500 rank 1 talismans and he still beong looked down by others. And where the hell come 1500 talismans he know. Ask author then. When he can only make 30 talisman of same type/day.

4. MC focus on talismans early on his life but then MC become know it all even about ancient treasure. There is no need for spirit advisor of MC already know lots of things.

5. Author bad memories. Why? Spirit advisor said that once MC reach void something which is cultivation rank 3. Spirit advisor can never go out from MC body. But suddenly when MC has reached void stage, spirit advisor can still go out.

[collapse]

For me personally, before MC get the inheritance and s*upid spirit advisor, MC quite intelligent. But after that, MC become dumb and dumber and he just got lucky on everything.

Btw I say the spirit advisor who has great strength live like over 1 million years s*upid because he got touched and proud a little when see MC personality saving people. All I think that the spirit advisor has low contact with people if he can react like that. And whats more MC save yhe people when its time for the girl to die rather than her other 2 companions which both male.

In conclusion, this novel is bad. Well but if you enjoy reading novel where everything jist come to MC because he lucky, s*upid enemies, rich enemies but lack tresures, old enemies but lack treasures and someone said that even after 1000 years old MC still childish then its good for you.

I wish there will be a remake where MC continue the talismans path with the talismans eddict girl while his brother do the martial arts. <<less

It started out strong with an interesting world, cultivation system, and what looked like a promising set up for the talisman dao. But that's it. As it goes on, what makes the cultivation interesting, gets expanded upon less or totally skipped. The talisman dao gets used rarely, or later just as a shitty light show to make his sword slashes cool, because for some reason it says that this is the true way to use talismans. Not too set up traps, make weapons, or to powerup yourself in a pinch.... more>> No sword talisman light shows. It's just a frustrating read that disappoints worse everytime. <<less

"Talisman" should be removed from the title and if you have some basic math skills you should shut off your brain while reading this because either the author or the translator totally messed up pretty much all numbers used in the novel.

Spoiler

Example:

In the beginning of the novel our beloved MC can craft around 30 talismans per day due to his limited energy. At that point he has been learning talisman crafting for 5 years. Since I assume that when he started learning Talisman crafting, his daily crafting limit was lower than after 5 years of training (<30) he should have crafted less than 54.750 talismans overall.

It is further mentioned that the amount of talismans that he has mastered proficiently is over 1.000. One of those talismans that he has mastered is called "Earthshield Talisman" and over his 5 years of Talisman crafting the MC has crafted no less than 100.000 of those Earthshield Talismans.

As you can see, out of the 54.750 talismans the MC has crafted altogether during his 5 years of Talisman crafting, 100.000 are Earthshield Talismans. The rest of those 54.750 was made up of the other 999 talismans that the MC has proficiently mastered.

Another nice example is that "incense stick of time" time measurement that many chinese like to use. In Talisman Emperor 1 incense stick of time is a very flexible measurement. First it was like 15 minutes. A few chapters later it has turned to 2 hours and another time an incense stick of time is even almost an entire day!

True name of novel is ret*rd Emperior. If you dont stand s*upid risky actions with no or super lame explanations some time you absolutely should not read this. Its not always but when it happens you can crash your skull by facepalm. Cultivation system like DE beta version. In all other cons is quate usual for this genre so not be surprised about some forgoten persons after 1000+ chapter arrogant masters and so on. BUT please note that this site have novels that even more s*upid some times or have... more>> some other big cons but more hi rated for different reasons. Also this novel have its own pros unusual from other novels. For example. Hero isn't hide his powers when it's not need (yet he should do it sometimes but he dont so it is part of ret*rd thing) from what I tired enough and he not expert in over 9000 professions. So for reason for justice I mark it as 4 star. <<less

To sum up this novel in one word. Boring. Seriously. It starts out fairly well. Enjoyed the start with the talismans, the powerup was done fairly well. Then off we go on a weird adventure, with lots of killings, revenge, etc. All that though was ok. Read it all before, but wasn't bad. Then we get to crazy powerups, and wiping out entire families. And now I just am tired of it. Its gone from an interesting MC, to a mu*derous psychopathic MC who I no longer recognize. Continuing to... more>> read, I find I'm just bored with the whole story. The beginning was good, though a bit overdone. How many MCs have to be bullied? As many as need be if it draws your sympathy is chinas answeer.

There is a difference in this one. He has brother.

But there is twist!

His brother plays the part of the MCs lost maiden. Forgeten for many chapters and found much later- more mature, more powerful, less dependent on the MC (because he is talented). So he eventually grows up. He can stand on his own, another character to be forgettened; only developed off screen.

As the story developes charcter growth doesn't, they regress becoming immature despite they're increasing or already massive age (excepting the mc).

And that is my only problem worth mentioning, I can see a weak point coming as far as I am and I can see the plot right behind this weak point. So 3.9/5, for now.

Good Novel without direction simply your average weak MC became OP later...

Major Spoiler Reason I stop reading this novel

The MC has a good plot story where he will get his revenge this and that because of how tragic their life becomes but that all was for nothing as the MC wasn't the one who destroyed his enemies. A super power out of nowhere suddenly destroy MC's sworn enemies I was like what's the point of the story again?

It was title Talisman Emperor but the so called Talisman was barely mentioned although it look amazing when it was first introduce. Now that the so called revenge for his family vanish it was like pretty much very boring... boring... boring NOVEL! (Import thing must be mentioned 3 times)

I was initially led into reading the story because of the comparison to DE, which is one of my favorite xianxia novels. Also, I thought it'd be refreshing to have an MC who focuses on something other than the typical sword immortal cultivation route and uses talismans instead.

Weirdly enough, AFTER he gets an inheritance that actually needed his talent in the Dao of Talismans to pass, he makes / uses talismans less and less. For a novel that's titled Talisman Emperor, I've yet to see the MC use a talisman... more>> past the first dozen chapters. (Another review indicated that this trend extends up to ch13x!). He's reverted back to a common template - dual cultivation of body refining and use of swords / sword qi.

Lack of talisman usage aside, the story is pretty generic (with lots of plot holes and shout out loud annoying logic). It also violates one of my pet peeves - making the MC uber powerful too fast. There are other stories that does it a LOT better.

I'll probably wait until the story gets back on track with regards to the talismans, or show something unique. As it is now, it's forgettable. <<less

The plot is very poorly thought and has many gaping holes and inconsistencies:

i.e. MC is hired as an apprentice in a restaurant - but all he does is waste incredible number of ingredients to improve his own skills - he NEVER serves in that restaurant even once, despite receiving a huge salary!

clan of cultivators kidnaps dozens of citizens to sacrifice to a monster - and after MC saves them the local authorities never mention it and do nothing against that clan;

Hell, why are they calling MC "jinx" if all... more>> his sufferings are a direct result of the enemy actions and have nothing to do with luck? <<less
