I just love the realism of this survival/leveling novel. The author describes in detail the pain and difficulty that the protagonist goes through to achieve each level. Unlike other rpg novels, the life and death danger feels realistic. Worthwhile achievements in this novel requires constant struggle, just like in our real lives. This novel is focused only on survival and leveling. You wont find much character interaction or character development here.

The story was ok not good not bad.

What I loved In his floor sixty timeline the premise was he needed another challenger to complete it. That was cool he helped her grow and I was really interested in their first meeting. The timeline splits with him telling her how he completed the floors, so the story switches between him when he entered the floor and him guiding her through the floors. This is the main meat of the story so I was really annoyed when

She got to the 49th floor she found out that the 60th floor need two people to complete but the 61st floor you had to sacrifice another challenger. She was the sacrifice that the MC needed.

[collapse]

So the story falls apart after that form me the writer then tries to make it seem better than it was but I really hated this. So I subtracted 2 stars as it betrayed the expectations It had been building up from the start.

Spoiler

Had the writer continued with his original idea with The MC and his apprentice working together after the 60th floor to clear the other floors and then work on protecting earth I would Have given this story 7 or 8 stars. That was the story we were promised as it was the mc's listed intentions in the earlier chapters. But no he powered up the MC to much and had him able to leave the 60th floor without her and I wondered what the point of her character was in the first place.

[collapse]

Im very annoyed about that but I powered through the rest of this novel and the writer did his best to force the plot into dumber and dumber lengths.

First 100 or so chapters 5/5 everything after that 1/5 <<less

Open ending, so only 4.5 stars.

Otherwise I have to say the later chapters are a far cry from the perfection of the earlier ones.

I would say unitl chapter 60 it is one of the best if not the best novel out there, 61-270 are also pretty good.

271-379 is too much "god" stuff.

I regret completing it, would have been better to remember only the early ones.

I really liked this novel at the start.

(Disclaimer: This is my first review that I wanted to write, and a lot of this is me venting)

The translations were good and the setting while a little generic was intriguing enough. The premise is more or less your standard world gets dumped into floor-based dungeon kind of thing, 100 floors in this case. The spice of the week being the difficulty levels that separate people into different floors based on the difficulties. The story revolves around the main character's struggle... more>> having accidentally chosen the hardest difficulty setting, Hell.

Spoiler

An interesting writing technique the author decides to implement is to make the entire story essentially an incredibly long flashback, with glimpses of the main character's current predicament on the higher floors. Well specifically a single higher floor that the character is stuck on. The floor is only able to be completed cooperatively but nobody else has ever reached the floor that the main character is stuck on at the Hell difficulty, nobody has even been remotely close.

[collapse]

Pros:

The main character's struggle was the strongest part of the novel, you got a real sense of who the character was and how hard of a difficulty he had been dropped into. The author puts in a lot of time to really drive home how hard the Hell difficulty is compared to the other difficulties. The character's struggle both physically and mentally is where the novel really shined. What this novel does differently compared to other dungeon novels is give you a real portrayal of the characters gradually diminishing mental state and is definitely the best part of the novel.

People dropped into the dungeon are all given a forum based communication system, basically dungeon reddit, and it serves as the only form of communication for people between floors. This gives the author a clever way to give exposition on the world outside of the main character, through the view of these threads.

The floors that the author bothers to go over are pretty interesting, each have their own setting and challenge to complete and a lot of them are quite unique. The challenges are usually broad enough so that the main character can complete them in any way he wants to, which leads to a lot of world building for each floor.

Cons:

This being a Korean web novel, the main character is strong. Really strong. In the hands of a different writer this might be a strength, but here it serves as a weakness. There's no justification for why it is the main character becomes this strong, he becomes a Mary Sue which is a shame because it didn't start off like that. This especially contrasts with the best part of the novel which is the characters struggle, because eventually he just stops struggling. Gone is the main character who had to really work through these floors and overcome obstacles. Eventually the main character just brute forces his way through floors, ruining any tension that could've been.

The other characters are bland. The author doesn't seem to care about the other characters, yet he still spends time to world build on them, leading to them and their situation being rather dull. The only other character 's situation on the Hell difficulty that the author goes over is actually pretty interesting, but only because you get to see the floors the main character went through from another perspective.

The God's can interact with the player through text based emotions. Just why. It's incredibly irritating and childish and the reason the author decides to put this in is beyond me. Here is an actual excerpt that I found from a random chapter:

[The God of Adventure is happy.]
[The God of Light hates someone.]
[The God of Death is bored.]

It happens a ton in the story and just, why? Why put this in author, why must you do this to me? I thought we were friends.

This leads into the next problem, the author doesn't know how to write dialogues well. Eventually the novel just descends into the main character doing something and other characters going "Wow how he do that, he not supposed to do that like that, so strong much power". The novel is desperately missing interesting character interactions.

TLDR: Story starts out really intriguing with a genuinely sympathetic main character, but eventually devolves into a Mary Sue power fantasy with the Author clearly lacking the vision to bring this novel home. This is something a lot of web novels suffer from so I'd give it a shot, despite it's flaws it really starts out quite good compared to other dungeon web novels. 3/5. <<less

As they say, slow and steady wins the race. This story starts quite slow, and each floor takes quite a while to clear, but thanks to that it ends up being a pretty solid story.

When the story starts, the MC is stuck at a higher floor with no possibility of advancing further, since the floor absolutely requires two people to clear, so there he sits, slowly losing his mind. Luckily for him, as the novel starts, another unlucky person chose Hell Difficulty by accident (there were others but they all... more>> died), so now he's slowly guiding her up while recounting his own experience.

The highlight of this story is that the 'Hell Difficulty' is really not just for show. If this were a game, by Floor 2, you'd be chucking your computer out the window, and by Floor 12, you'd be swearing off video games for the rest of your life. The setting is so hilariously unreasonable, and not just in terms of difficulty: from incredibly repetitive to unreasonably trial-and-error-ish to how-the-hell-was-I-supposed-to-find-this-needle-in-the-haystack, in the flashback, the protagonist was only a dozen floors in and had already suffered multiple blows to his psychological health.

It's not all doom and gloom. The story is peppered with a myriad of amusing comments from voyeuristic gods (though probably not as amusing from the main character's point of view), and the main character can interact with those at other difficulty settings through the forums and through special events. Sadly, these are meager distractions. Even though his slow-steady-self-mutilation approach enables him to grow to the point where he can beat-up whatever comes his way, there is nothing he can do about the infuriating scenarios and objectives.

Overall, despite the lack of plot or too much psychological depth, the setting and character reactions themselves are amusing enough to warrant giving this a try. <<less

For those that are hoping that the tutorial will only amount to the first major arc, I am sorry to burst your bubble but it looks like the tutorial will be the only real place that the MC and other selectees can grow. The following is an excerpt from the second chapter:

"The Tutorial is made from Floor 1 to Floor 100 and Players who were able to reach Floor 100 are sent back to the real world. And those Players who are strengthened through the Tutorial become 'The Awakened' and... more>> protect the earth from monsters.

How the Awakened grow is not through experience or training but through level ups like in a game and they can no longer become stronger the moment they leave the Tutorial. They may become more experienced and efficient, but that's the limit.

The evolution of their skills and growth of their stats simply become impossible."

I really hope I am reading too far into this, but unless the author changes his mind part way through and decides to implement some special post tutorial growth system (like the shop from 'Life Mission'), the chances of the author taking this story beyond the tutorial look to be pretty slim.

As for the story itself... it is ok. Probably closer to a 3.5 than a 4 so far, but it is still early. There is too much inner monologue and debate. At times it seems the MC is describing what he is feeling with each and every footstep he takes in the dungeon. At this point I am starting to skim a bit. Hopefully things will improve in later chapters. <<less

The light novel is about a guy who is one day asked if he would like to do a tutorial and what level. He being an ex pro gamer and someone who was the best of the best hit "HELL MODE" with no hesitation. Needless to say this mode is the hardest mode! Anyways after that he was sent to a lobby with 3 other people where they conduct training and wait to begin the first level of the tutorial. Anyways the novel is really good at the moment and I am quite interested. I'd definitely recommend this light novel if you're a fan of novels where the MC is sent to an alternate dimension where he has to survive which a mix of Gantz/Terror infinity. (At least so far)
Spoiler

Lobby, gets to heal up there even if an arrow is in the persons leg. Might just be tutorial though, idk.

I am not sure what to feel about this novel, it hurts reading MC's emotional turmoil, and the jump between timeline, and at some point I actually lost interest with whatever past the MC had, it's just too much, some people might actually like this though, but I am not, it should even be written as a separate prequel instead imo. The jumping back and forth in the timeline destroyed my small brain just to process what was happening and not to mention that MC's lower floor adventures are mostly... more>> the repetition of him feeling happy and sad -like cycle of hell- frustrating and depressing to read, I think I might develop bipolar disorder if I read this with focus.

Updated after some more reading, ch127 --> now ch217

Spoiler

At chapter 217, the story has yet to pick up with his floor 60 self. The story still deals with floor 49+ (IIRC) which are the floors that deal with gods trials. Though, these chapters might explain his changes, and his falling out with the gods.

Novel was great up until wangmamaread took over translations. Now I'm debating whether or not to continue reading it. I drop novels with translations this bad typically within a chapter or two. It's getting annoying trying to decipher what translator is trying to say...

I gave it two stars because of that, otherwise I would have given it 4-5.

Edit: Translations have gotten a lot better. I'm still keeping up with this one.

This story starts off following the MC's struggle to survive. However, because of his nature, he quickly gets ahead of the curve and it instead becomes a story about the MC pushing himself to the limits. However, the tutorial itself is designed to test the MC, so instead of it becoming physically challenging for the character to survive, it becomes a story about him struggling with loneliness, depression, and a degree of madness.

The character does become OP, but that begins to work against him. People are afraid of him, adding... more>> to his isolation during the few times he even gets to interact with others.

The story is told as a flashback, with the author snapping back to the present in order to forshadow things or talk about the outside world. It allows for some really nice moments. As an aside, the story shifts focus like a traditional book, never focusing on 1 aspect to the point of boredom. Additionally, the writing/translating is top notch. <<less

This novel is the epitome of "If you have a goal you can persevere through anything"

The novels is really fun at the beginning then it slows down massively until eventually the only reason why I kept reading was to see him get out of the tower and bam he does.

The only reason why I read this far is because I wanted to see him escape the tower and eventually I wanted to see his interactions outside the tower and my score on them is

Meh.

Read from 2017-2021. Thank you to all the translators/editors that worked on this ~380 chapter work.

Beginning: The lower floors are the best. Each floor is awesome and poses real danger for the MC. There is a reason it is Hell difficulty! Floors are cleared only through sheer masochistic-like training. Gods are mysterious and sometimes make funny comments regarding MC's trials. MC has unlimited growth potential as a lvl 1 challenger, and with each skill he earns you get excited. Occasionally a chapter shows the perspective of MC from Floor 60...... more>> it's hinted that he's incredibly powerful, but why is it always Floor 60... Here friendships are made, loneliness is battled, and extreme efforts are given to survive extreme trials.

Middle: Some arcs are a little boring. Sometimes a floor will be described in so much detail it just isn't exciting. Not all floors are covered, and some are skipped by the author. There is still enough to keep you interested for sure though. Will he ever make it to the 60th floor and/or escape the tutorial???

End: Power balance issues, pacing issues, and frankly content issues. More is explained about certain things, but other things are not spoken of ever again. You start to ask, what is the point? or, where is the author trying to take us???

The Ending: Sigh. Immense disappointment.

Mild Spoiler about the nature of the ending (not content)
Spoiler

open-ended cliffhanger, lots of loose ends

I was not expecting too much because of all the complaints I've seen here, but man this is one of my favorite novels. It just has a certain charm that appeals to me and allows me to become highly invested in my bby MC and his progress. Tbh I did take a couple of breaks just because sometimes it got a little slow. But after I passed a certain threshold and was able to become engaged with the story, I realized how much I've been missing out. The author is... more>> brilliant and the subtle details+events they add truly elevate the story and set it apart from other novels. It doesn't read like your usual "let's just make a OP story we know will appeal to the audience and feed the demand enough to get a lot of money". In my opinion it has much more substance in it. I love this story, the translator is doing amazing (although there are sometimes dry spells which is sometimes disappointing), and I like the characters a lot. I had to stay up multiple nights because the novel was just that good and wouldn't let me sleep ;-;

IN SHORT: A lot of the weight of this story lies on one character. There are tons of characters that come and go, the vast majority mentioned for less than 20 chapters, but only LHJ is there throughout. The problem is the character can both feel bland and on the verge of insanity at times. As much of the novel focuses on a cultivation story line carried out, both blandness and insanity are realistic, but that doesn't mean they are particularly enjoyable. You also likely won't enjoy this novel if... more>> you dislike our 'good' heroes flaunting virtually every ethical code when it comes to their brand of justice. I like a dark fantasy but it grates on me when the author tries to outright justify the savagery displayed for such crimes as dealing narcotics. That said the focus is on LHJ's journey and I find it is interesting in two primary ways. The first is that the stages allow for episodic storytelling. I have enjoyed the storylines for several of the stages and the NPCs he meets. It's like Dr. Who where we have to solve a problem independent of the largely invisible overarching plot and then we will move on. The difference is LHJ is not an excentric Birtish man and the characters will likely never resurface again, but I still enjoy the format. The second strength is in the cultivation aspect. These are a dime a dozen out there, but I like how LHJ dedicates himself to growing and escaping. There are some good mysteries hinted at throughout regarding the origin of the tutorial, the gods and NPCs. This is not a highly recommended novel but it is overall good, the author focuses on his strengths while occasionally trying out some deviations that are kind of hit or miss. 3.71/5

FULL REVIEW: I look at categories that generally apply to novels and rate this novel out of 100. I will first provide a range in parentheses for where most light novel readers would place this work for that category. It is not scientific nor will it cover all reactions, but because I know everyone values things differently I would like to provide an idea of how much I think a given aspect could make or break a novel for individuals. I will then have my rating out of 100.

Plot: The plot is possibly the weakest point. It is largely a cultivation story within the isolation of the tutorial. That means an overall plot is difficult to pull off. There is some stuff happening on the outside which is largely irrelevant to the main story and some politicking going on as the players try to form government and stuff but, as he is generally incapable of interacting with the other difficulties, it is largely background information for some 25 or so chapters. There are small plots for each floor, I guess, but none of those last long enough to match an overarching plot. So, we are mostly left with a fairly generic cultivation plot where
Spoiler

the protagonist is obsessively trying to get stronger with the ultimate result being that he will overthrow the gods and become the most powerful being in any of the tutorials/world.

[collapse]
Le sigh. It still isn't the worst offender in this category because we get to see him also help others and there is a strong suggestion of both an escape to the outside world and cooperation with others in the future. (30-80) 60/100

World building: I am a big stickler for world building and this book does it fairly well. There are two levels to this, the first of which is the world building of the tutorial. As we gradually learn about the tutorial and the gods, severally mysteries begin to emerge. I am genuinely interested in the nature and fate of the NPCs. The skill system is fairly hackneyed, as is the idea of breaking the system by learning the underlying principles, but it's far from a capital sin. The second type of world building is the scenarios on each level. There are some that are overly simplistic, but many show or suggest a fascinating world beyond the stage. It is a pity they pass so quickly, but the author does an excellent job of setting things up quickly, and I genuinely wonder about the larger worlds some of these are based off of. (50-90) 80/100

Main Character: LHJ is a protagonist that is practical on many levels. As a pro-gamer he is a practical choice for someone who could feasibly be a protagonist in this setting. His hyper-focus helps explain his survival and progress, and I genuinely enjoy the grindiness of his training sessions. Most of his interactions with others are practical. I imagine him with a deadpan expression most of the time just due to his isolation. Even when messaging others it largely seems he is pursuing practical ends, but his focused nature and lack of social interaction begins to wear on him. I mostly accredit this to how I imagine someone coping with the loss of all their acquaintances either by death or them leaving. As his mental health has started deteriorating I find him becoming more interesting, but at the same time he still just feels a little too generic. Especially in the context of him executing the arbitrary law they've come up with. I find it difficult to really grasp how he (or the others, for that matter) justify mass executions for every little thing. I'm fine with a dark fantasy, and depictions of totalitarian governments, but this has them selling themselves as the good guys and comes off as an inconsistency in character. When I picture how he'd look from the outside he feels like a robot executing his protocol over a human being. Overall he is a solid character with some realistic developments but there are enough issues he is not exceptional in my opinion. (60-100) 70/100

Writing. It is always hard to do this for translated works, but it is a major part of the experience so I'm going to do it anyway. Some of it may be on the translator, so if you need to pass the buck to him, do so. Especially since a lot of things are left ambiguous. There have been multiple times where the translator throws notes in there changing a previous part of the story or correcting something because the author left it ambiguous and he misunderstood it. That isn't a good sign. Either the author or translator needs to figure out that if a detail matters down the line you need to be fairly clear on that point. Another major problem is that, as LHJ spends a lot of time alone, the other characters either don't develop or they develop by telling us over showing us. We get explicitly told someone has given up, or someone has decided to get stronger, we don't get to see it. Some may think it is unfair to criticize this as the story basically requires it, but the author tied his own hands in my mind, and it still feels lazy and unsatisfying even if I know it is the only way intellectually. Otherwise the prose works fairly well and there are only a few times I had to reread a section because I couldn't comprehend what was being said. (50-95) 75/100

Side characters: As mentioned, the side characters are difficult to really grasp. Most of them are mostly just names in an email/message. Most of them can be grouped into 5 groups: dirtbags, clearers, totalitarian bureaucrats, stage NPCs and Hell players. The dirtbags make sense as preying on the weak makes sense from an animalistic viewpoint, but they largely don't progress and are fairly unsatisfying. Clearers early on serve as pseudo-rivals for LHJ. They eventually fall extremely far behind and transition to a means of explaining why the world isn't going to be gone by the time LHJ gets out. Mostly they leave and serve as a plot device for setting up the world building we will get in another 4 years of translation work. Its hard to care about them with this knowledge. The administrators rub me the wrong way due to their conviction that they can just slaughter whomever. They are supposed to be the government but with a justice system which makes the atrocities of 20th century communism look like impartial. Stage NPCs are genuinely interesting. I really enjoy the format, and these represent some of the most fleshed out NPCs; it's a pity that, with one exception, they just don't stick around. The Hell players have a little more depth as you see them interact more with LHJ, but ultimately you know none of it matters with one exception. I did feel bad when his junior made it to stage 17, but otherwise they've been a letdown. Beyond these general groups there is Kirikiri who is adorable and provides some good insight into the world, Clone bastard who angsts around as a failed experiment, Yong yong who is cute and provides some genuine interaction for LHJ, Iggy who is by far the most fascinating as she is tied to the fate of the tutorial, and the female player 2, who may develop more but is largely framed entirely from her relationship to LHJ. Some may disagree, but to me they are mostly functional characters and largely uninteresting in themselves. (60-80) 70/100

Humor/action/romance: The action is really enjoyable in this. I feel the fights are kept just right, and they never seem to wear on as the author knows when to truncate repetitive action. There was only one time I felt I wanted more when he cut away, so overall very well done. The humor is also pretty good. Most of the jokes don't require a translators note and a lot of it is really nice but some of the humor gets repetitive. Romance is pretty meh. When I enjoy the romantic tension between a lizard and a human over the few clumsy attempts so far, it may be a sign he needs help. Overall though I find that doesn't impact most of the story so it's largely forgivable for me. (40-100) 85/100

Enjoyment/overall experience: I enjoy the cultivation aspect and the short story format this novel allows. It is a good thing that is the vast majority of the novel because, beyond a few displays of power and moments of humanizing openness by LHJ, the group stuff really frustrates me. I enjoy the concept and interactions with the gods and NPCs but I am worried LHJs character is stagnating. Overall, though, I have been mostly satisfied. (50-100) 80/100

I will not say this novel is perfect, but surely is enjoyable.

This novel has the best dungeon/tutorial/system I ever saw. It is complex, has diversity, not just stronger monsters, there is a range of other trials too. And the thing is, it fully delivers the "tutorial" idea. Because each floor of the tutorial is designed to teach something, the teachings are mostly hidden, but if you dig enough you find them. But you can still pass the trial without it, if you are resourceful or overpowered in another area and... more>> creative.

The novel also has depth. The feelings of the MC are constantly beeing shown, and they are one of the forces of the novel. He is always on the verge of becoming insane, of losing it, and that shows exactly how a human being would possibly react in that situation. At the same time, the novel has quite a good sense of comedy and light heart. It sure is new in the genre.

The MC is insanely overpowered in comparison to others. But that is not wrong, and the novel shows why. He is in the hardest difficulty, he grinds until almost dying, and is not afraid of taking the chances. Of course he is talented, but is not really talent, its just the way he thinks, it makes all the difference. Lets say he is wired in a way that makes the tutorial suitable for him.

So, it is a really good novel. Not for everybody, if you do not like a complete story (because the novel is primarily shown as a fighting novel, but the drama/consequences/romances/hardships are always there and have far reaching results). So, if you like a complete package, this a good novel for you.

Give it a shot. I liked it since the beggining, but I accept that it is slow at first. It takes about 40 chapters to introduce the side characters seen at the first chapters, and give full motion and intensity to the novel. But still, its interesting. <<less

This is absolutely one of my favorite web novels right now. The action, comedy, suspense, and writing are fantastic. I hesitated to start the series because I was concerned it would progress slowly and give overly-detailed lists about skills and statuses every chapter. I have never been more delighted to be wrong. This adventure series focuses on Lee Ho Jae's life-or-death struggle in this chamber of death called the Tutorial, and he chose Hell Difficulty. Unlike the people on other difficulties, he is isolated from other humans and only has... more>> the forum to rely on for social contact. The loneliness is real, and the despair hits him hard when he notices it.

Sure, he becomes the strongest person as far as we know, but his struggle is believable. Some floors aren't too terrible for him, but he is definitely risking his life and sanity every step of the way. The suspense is great. Each floor shown has been unique and different from the others. I love the creativity.

The alternating present time and flashbacks is done very smoothly. It is fun to compare the current him who is struggling against being trapped on a floor and maintaining his mental state back to the him who was proceeding through the Tutorial but only starting to realize he wasn't quite normal.

Characters die for real, and crimes happen in this world. People adapt in response to it, so it's interesting to see the Tutorial culture develop, too.

Some reviews commented that Korean archer he's assisting is a Mary Sue, but she has complained about the ridiculousness of the Tutorial and is proceeding more slowly than she could be. We've only seen things through her perspective a few times, so I'm looking forward to see her again. We really don't know too much about her at this point, and there's still a good chance she could be killed off... After all, they don't call it Hell for nothing. <<less

Objectively, this is a good novel. Subjectively, I dont like this kind of novel, it's like watching a documentary series, I dont feel adrenaline and rush as when I read other action novel.
