I gave up on this series twice. I knew to expect the cliches of course, for example him proving his superiority over other people in knowledge/looks/strength etc. Except he doesn't only do it to the villains. The MC does it to people who do not deserve it and acts smug when he has no reason to. I tried to see if it gets better or if he learns his lesson but he hasn't and I refuse to read more when I cannot stand the MC.

If you like other xianxia novels... more>> with cliches they are known for, you will enjoy this until about chapter 100. I genuinely like how it solidifies the girl he likes in the beginning. I don't mind the one note villains and the glorifying of the main character until he changes into an overconfident jerk. I do not believe he is a "badass" MC or cool when the people he puts down are genuinely good people or when he is obsessively creeping on a girl. <<less

This story used to be my personal favorite with occasional cringe reading through several chapters due to rude & arrogant MC attitude.
After ~200 chapters, I realize that a lot of the reviews are right - the story is shallow. The flaws that I've seen:
- How awesome MC is.
- Everyone who opposes MC is inherently evil / bad.
- MC's group of friends/followers/brothers are there for decorations - there's no character development from them.

Spoiler Free!

Story: Just your typical Genius MC with super fast cultivation speed; fighting arrogant guys and doing amazing things; as in other Xianxia. MC trains a Slow-but-powerful technique, but sometime the author be like, "F*ck it, this arc is boring" and gives him ludicrous speed, bringing him to the next "bottleneck" and then "breakthrough"; so if you find an arc is slow and boring, just skim through it until you reach the next arc.

Unlike the other Xianxia MC who has a few cheat and a grandpa, the MC is his... more>> own -grandpa-. As you can see in the synopsis, the MC is the second strongest being plus a living Wikipedia. He has all Cultivation technique in the world, know the use of almost everything and has the mental of a 200+ years old.

Romance: Well... Imagine a 200+ years old returning to 13 and starts chasing after his previous life's wife, now a teenage, like a creepy stalker. Disgusting, right? "Accident" with other Female happens all the time; thus he ends up with a Harem. At least he is loyal to his previous wife alone.

Other Characters: Long story short:
-Comrade: "Nie Ly is so Amazing. We don't have to do anything and he will help us to the sky!"
-Other classmates / schoolmates: "This brat doesn't have a backing, so no matter how genius he is, he can't win me... What, he is way stronger than me now?"
-Enemy: "We hate human. Period." <<less

SOO GOOD. 5 Star

The male lead is a walking encyclopedia! He is not arrogant about the fact that his knowledge of everything surpasses even the strongest of those in the martial world.

Not only does he level up fast, he even helps his friends improve their situations and changes their lives. A few of them become Nie Li’s sworn brothers! It’s good that the main lead isn’t a loner for once, and has people he can rely on to back him up. I also appreciate the fact that he has a... more>> pretty high standing position after people come to notice how talented he is.

Normally, in other novels, once the main lead’s talents are exposed, the enemies or even strangers all try to get rid of the talent. I love how the people in this novel are so accepting and they appreciate talent and don’t judge a person based on looks. Nie Li definitely deserves respect! <<less

BIG EDIT!!!

It seems the TDG manga is now further ahead than the latest chapter 496 of the novel as of 24/01/24!!!!

I Would love to flex the fact that I predicted the when the manhua would be caught up to the webnovel half a year ago, this is the description I had in my calendar set for 5 January 2024:

TDG (Tales of Demons and Gods) catch up date

Friday, 5 Jan 2024 21:36

20/07/22 ch. 382 in novel

17/06/23 ch. 452 in novel

Total chapters 496 (since 2021-now, 2023/06)

332 days - 70 novel chapters

496-452= 44 chapters

(322/70) *44= 202.4 days until caught up) Jun 17 2023 + (202 days, 9 hours and 36 min) (202.4 days) = Jan 5 2024, 9:36pm catch up date

Basically the math is me figuring out how many chapters the manhua covered of the webnovel in a certain number of days (70 chapters of the novel in 332 days) and found out the difference between the chapter of the novel where the manhua was at, at the time (452) and the last novel chapter (496 - it's been like 3 years since this came out). If it took 332 days to do 70 novel chapters, then it would take 202~ days to cover the other 44.

The newest 456.4 chapter (13/12/23) of the manhua has a little screenshot at the end saying

"Almost 6 chapters Left till we catch up to Webnovel"

If reuse my numbers, there should be another 27.6 days left since the release of the last 456.4 chapter (updated date: 09/01/24, 02:24:00 PM, I know this is not accurate, but CBA to redo the date checks), which is only a bit more slow than the previous pace, maybe the manhua team is delaying for whatever reason (won't make predictions on that, don't wanna get my hopes up) :)

I'm happy that I seem to be right. We can finally all either forget about this series that's been pissing us off with it's piss-take pacing for a good part of a decade finally or maybe we can get a pleasant surprise and they start making original content separately from the novel :p

Spoiler

Would like to note that all the times are GMT+0 and the date format IS not the American one.

Read quite a lot of this. I loved the start as a quite generic reborn as previous master story, but after moving past the early phase the writer seemed to not want to let go of the supporting cast. The problem created by that is a huge inconsistency in cultivation speed as despite having some of the most insane opportunities and resources the other characters easily keep up or even exceed his cultivation speed.

Spoiler

I would understand if the others rushed their cultivation and are now weaker as a result but this is not the case. I dropped it after MC got treasure that gave him the equivalent of 20 years of cultivation (more like 1 or 2 years if he used normal resources in that time) in 20 days. 20 days! He comes back to find that the character that was barley 2 minor cultivation levels above him is now 1 large cultivation level above him. Let me make this more clear. He already exceeded her cultivation speed without any treasures having gained a realm that took others decades in less than 5 years and now this girl that has a slower speed than him anyway out cultivates him in 1 years time when during that year he got the best treasures for cultivating had opportunities that even the strongest people in the world would want AND a treasure that gives him 20 years of cultivation in 20 days.

I am giving 5 stars for the only reason that deserves at least 4 on average;
It is the introductory novel in the world of cultivation for many, it is not heavy, in fact it is light.
There are people who give annoying grades because he is 200 years old "mental age" in a 13 year old body and has a relationship with 13 year old girls. If, by this logic, someone with a mental disability with 40 years old had the mental age of 5 years, could they be... more>> with girls of preschool age? <<less

REALLY a snail release pace of chapters

It is one of the first novel I read in 2016 and still speed of a snail

Cliche troupe, romance and luck but can be a Pass-time read just don't expect too much or it will ruin your reading experience there manga and anime series but they are not as detailed as novel, Manga must be seen to get a feel of the world (anime deviates a bit in storytelling but most things remains same)

Skills Definitely possessed by Nie Li

At the time of this review, it has been 2 years since my last story catch-up (I'm lacking 150 chapters), so please forgive me if my memory is not accurate.

TDG start is engaging for me. The main character (MC) - Nie Li - is reincarnated as his teenage self (his consciousness travels back in time). The MC realizes he now gets a second chance in life. He knows there is an impending doom arriving in few years, that killed all his people and loved ones in his first life. A... more>> strong motivation for a do-over.

Nie Li is mostly a likable guy, he actively supports his friends and some others to cultivate better. Nie Li has an obvious over power (OP), that his soul belongs to a 300-year-old-top-martial-artist. In addition to massive knowledge about cultivation, he knows all sorts of handy stuff about future events.

However.. Even though the MC is supposed to be a weakling with superior knowledge, he has a very prideful personality. He tends to carry himself in an overly confident and somewhat overbearing manner, not only with his privileged snotty peers, but also with some much stronger cultivators. I think this behavior repeats on many occasions and it is hard to believe he always gets away with it. If it just is part of the MC's personality, I guess he was lucky when he made it to 300 year old in his first life.

I kinda wish the author Mad Snail could have used some other ways to build tensions and action around the MC. But this is not a major critique, because tr*sh talking and face slapping is a tried and tested way to keep many xianxia stories going. It at least delivers some humor. Another reviewer described these mini paybacks as "delicious", so I guess these moments are worth it. In fact, I never did consider this, but TDG is a type of a revenge story, a mission right the wrongs of the future past. For that backdrop some slapping is more than welcome.

If my memory serves, one major positive about TDG is that it is a very easy and fast read. Almost too easy. The cultivation and world building is quick and simple. Cultivation occupies a large part of the work count. Even if it is easy to follow, it's hard to remember. The fights are similarly only few moves and boom, victory. According to Fandom there are 19 arcs until now (ch.480), so that is only about 25 chapters per arc. That fast pace also has a negative that TDG has lots of minor characters. Because of this reason alone, I feel it is almost impossible for me the pick this up again. I would have to start from the beginning and I think I am not able to do so. Luckily the manhua is here to help with that.

Spoiler

In comparison to other novels, TDG arrives at some key story points rather quickly (e.g. chapter 167) and moves on from there. The MC's knowledge OP, or the memory advantage, is soon not effective in the new territories, but no worries, his luck is never bad. This is a nice development in the story telling, and also, why would he go and meet some tribes from his previous life, if he already knows what they can teach him?

[collapse]

Perhaps the biggest misgiving for TDG (until now) is the limited character development. Nie Li is no grand philosopher, but the side-kicks are noticeably less developed. There may be a love interest or two that has few extra layers in them. And there is some romance, but not enough for the MC to change his cultivation goals in a drastic manner. I forget what is the story plot around chapter 300. Probably some form of politics and building a following.

I rate TDG 3/5 because I remember enjoying the Disney ride Nie Li was having. He had a senior and child discount all over the known TDG fantasy world, but that did not stop him from cutting the queue or kicking the shins of bullies he thought deserved it. Some rich fellow customers even continuously gave him cultivation cookies for free. Poor Nie Li then had to have a break once in a while to digest his cultivation cookies, in order to merrily carry on enjoying himself on bigger rides. Oh, it is true Nie Li also bought cookies with his own money he won from a slot machine and even gave some to his friends. I'll admit that much.

Joking aside, at the moment there are only two new translated chapters per month, which is too slow for just about anybody. In addition, the author has a bad rep of just dropping some projects, which is not great. Buuuut, on a positive note, TDG is a relatively easy and fun read, and it is not a big investment even if you check it out. <<less

Currently 473-

I annihilated 400+ chapters and had a blast reading and being invested in Nie Li's adventure through time. If you really want a protagonist that faces realistic difficulties through the then novel look somewhere else. This is what I would call a good candy store novel, in that its not very substantive but it is still over all an enjoyable read if you're not looking for anything too complicated. World building is great. Powers are interesting enough. Character are dry and uninteresting at most parts but like I said... more>> before it is an easy read. Funny here and there. Unfortunately the author is known for dropping his novels and he has done so on this project, only updating every month and writing the bare minimum as he is contractually obligated too, don't expect too much else out of this guy.

Overall 3/5--- A good thing to pick up if you're looking to pass some time. <<less

One of the first novels I started reading it’s great. You never get bored reading it the story continues and you barely see any fillers. Unique cultivation and treasures, auctions are always fun.

4/5 Stars because back when I started reading the release rate was like 1 or 2 chapters per day but now like 1 chapter per month or even 2 months.

Leaving asside all the inconsistencies, clichés, and bad/useless/unidimensional characters, the chapters keep getting shorter and shorter (maybe not in numbers of characters, but in term of advancement of the story, each chapter represent something like 5 minutes of the story.. Ridiculously slow) , and the story is going nowhere... With such bad writing and release schedule (1 chapter a month) you can clearly see that the author doesn't give a damn about this novel anymore

After going so far, its a pretty decent novel.

The translation seems to be paced well, the grammar and wording have some issues from time to time but its never anything major.

Storywise it is repetitive so far. MC gets strong reaches a point where he calls himself a "pinnacle level expert" but there are more levels after it. MC gets some crazy tier powerful weapons but not all of them are ever used other than momentarily. MC's love life is about being only focused on one girl but he is surrounded... more>> by "curvaceous, beautiful, faerie-like/goddess tier existences"

There is a lot of hype for the MC. I like reading it since the MC is pretty knowledgeable and a unique existence which is interesting to slowly learn.

I'd recommend to a lot of beginners but if you've been reading CN for a while like several other series I would take this with a grain a salt and read this as a time killer and not for enjoyment. <<less

I feel like this novel is either underrated or overrated respectively when people write their reviews.

When I found it I initially was checking out the graphic novel version, and upon reaching the most current chapter of that I swapped over to reading the written novel itself.

My first impression of the graphic novel-and one that carried over into the written novel too-was that it was an interesting premise provided that the author pulled it off well when he reached the part where little is the same as the MC's past life. ... more>>
Spoiler

In my opinion he half did, half didn't. Insofar as making things tie in together, what little he wrote he did pretty well, and it's always exciting, satisfying, in my opinion to see things tie together well. He did essentially quit though right after things were deviating from the easy-to-write "oh hey I've lived through this situation and am skilled in everything therefore I am nearly God"

[collapse]

The romance was pretty poor so far, but then a wuxia/xianxia and a romance can probably be compared to a cellphone with a computer's gaming graphics card. It isn't usually considered helpful for typical use; sure it MIGHT make it operate better if you could make it function but at that point you lose some of what makes it a cell phone like being easy to store, and the cell phone probably can't really tap the potential of the card anyway.

The world-building was good I feel like, but if I had to choose between "decent" and "great" I'd say it's closer to just being decent.

The action gave me mixed feelings. It was usually above average because of the detail and the scale but still pulled silly things like the whole, "hey let me mention certain things that sound awesome throughout the story but only use them to directly face the enemy when they do the same stuff and suppress by strength".

The main character seemed emotionally dull and, while not quite dumb like many (most??) main characters that authors write, not really exceptional in any way other than plot armor/experience. This is really typical for online chinese novels though, so I guess if you're used to it like me it may not matter to you too much either.

The other characters are all empty ornaments, this is something a lot of authors have issues with. You're lucky if you get so much as a benign personality quirk. Maybe I hope for too much because characters or even civilizations that seem to have their own lives and rhythm are vanishingly rare in online chinese novels. Everyone waits on and is tailored for outfitting the main character.

Now don't get me wrong. I DO like this novel, probably mostly because I'm a sucker for mystery and this novel includes several inside. I don't think it's particularly good but I feel like it could have potential if the author pulls it together. <<less

Hi, this is my firat review. So I'll be saying a few things the start with the review.

I, personaly, love this novel.

The first time I came in contact with the series was with the comic adaptation. Then I got hook up, so next thing I knew I was reading the novel.

... more>> I alredy drop reading this. The reason why is due I cought up with the last chapter and the author focusing in a another project.

Beforehand sorry if its not a very good review.

Well we start now.

1: all previous coments are all correct.

2: Its start of well but at some piont U will think that the story is not leading nowhere and the move to another plane. But it will move quite fast from then on if U were to compare to the beginning.

3: The fight sneces are awesome.

4: The romance is as it is stated in previous comments. And meanwhile the MC is selfish and everything, in regard of his friends, he admits he is trainning them like chess pieces but he choose who to train and he chose them (the ones from his city) because of his fellings for them (bro like).

5: There is plot armor like in Emperor Domination. But he plans it it dosen't happen just because.

Overall: I recomend it. Even if it is just to waste time <<less

Spoiler

For example he was basically an equal to the Sage Emperor even with his crappy cultivation & technique but he lost because he lacked the power of friendship. Fine. He makes up for it in this life with his past knowledge, connections, alchemy, coordination/power, & proper cultivation tailored to himself. But..... after he got his 2nd chance why doesn't he use his future knowledge/abilities more actively? He's already shown he can take advantage of future knowledge by cornering the grass market & having others help him to do so apparently there aren't any restrictions. Supposedly his realm is sealed off so not much of what he does while he was still in his bottle planet thing would affect anything else which gives even more reasons why he should've gone all out with his exploitation of future knowledge. (Might as well have an army snag everything he needed...) Like holy carp, just talking with some people (like his master) would've saved a crapload of time & effort.

Then there are the souls basically giving extra lives/respawns. But how can anyone lose as long as they have a safe place for their souls? Also the epic cheat code space-time tome he has.... wtf he seems pretty dumb for even as an all knowing formations expert.... dude barely utilizes it himself and only uses it to copy one formation for his city and to just break formations. Guess using it more actively would make him too powerful & the author doesn't know how to incorporate it more naturally.

Then there are the chicks in his life. Most of them just aren't written out too well.... they all basically fall for the MC because he "takes advantage of them" on numerous occasions..... well his love interest's father also fell for him due to that I guess.... maybe that's his superpower he acquired in his past life.

A little overrated, but a very fun gary stu story. It doesn't have the weak cookie cutter tr*sh antagonists who are ignorant and arrogant. It doesn't have the mind numbing repetition indicative of an author chasing his daily wordcount. Despite the usual shortcomings of a gary stu story, such as knowing everything and always winning, and the somewhat weak character development of the MC's sidekicks, it still has enough depth to make you enjoy the story.

So, MC reincarnates, gets a super cheat, cuz he has all this cultivation knowledge. Great. What does he decide to do with it? Be an as*hole to anyone and everyone that even looks at him or (who he considers to be) his future wife. As for the future wife, he's like, "OH NOES, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO WOO WOMEN, SO I'M GOING TO BE AN ASS TO HER, AND TEASE HER CONSTANTLY, BEAT THE sh*t OUT OF THE FATHER SHE LOVES, AND DESTROY ANY MALE WHO EVEN THINKS HIMSELF... more>> WORTHY OF HER ATTENTION!" I mean, he basically becomes what you would expect if the lead character ever decided to go yandere for someone. I mean, shit, he doesn't even give her the right to choose who she likes, something that most other xianxia MCs dont do to their love interests. Serious kudos tho to the translators, everything is translated well. I just can't. F*cking. Stand. Nie Li. He is like a God Mode Sue with the mentality of a 5 year old. <<less
