The sad thing is how brilliant Overlord is. The author wasn't content with the cliche OP characters that we see in most Wuxia, and other, novels. She didn't like their 2D natures. She didn't like the false dichotomy of characters of absurd righteousness, or characters without a care in the world for killing. She wanted something more, and through Overlord she told us that an OP character doesn't have to be this way. With Overlord she demonstrated to us the full capacity of an OP character. Overlord's ability to fully... more>> exploit, manipulate, and manifest the maximum potential of an OP character is unprecedented. Ainz changes the world around him to what he desires, completely unlike any other OP character whose environment changes them. She demonstrates to us that the main character doesn't have to be boring and cliche. He can deceive the entire world through sheer OPness! The world is a game in his palm! This is a sad thing. Ever since I've read Overlord, only a few OP novels have been even only mediocre. Overlord is really something else. Nothing else really delves into the kind of territory that Overlord does. The plot concept and implementation is really something truly brilliant and unlike any other story I've ever read. So I find it almost impossible to go back to the "hero is righteous and saves everything. Glory to the hero!" kind of story that most OP novels are. <<less

I find it better than the rest of the novel here in novelupdates except death march and new gate though if you can recommend me something better, I can change my mind.

I’m getting tired of those cliche stories where the main characters are always in trouble because he meets arrogant a**holes looking for a fight without logic and exaggerated emotions which is at the end, getting themselves killed just to give the main characters a loot to boost their powers. I hate forced stories where the main characters are protected... more>> by plot armor which dont emphasize of how they think and feel.

You cant find those cliche characters in this light novel. That is why I like this story. It has a unique elements that differentiate it from other novels.

I have more to say in this story but giving more will just spoil the plot. So I can only recommend to you guys for reading it. <<less

Wow talk about overhyped, the fans of this thing are hard cores with their praise but honestly I fail to see this series living up to the hype. Granted the series is decent but the main character is OP without need because he barely ever uses his OPness to do anything, he is afraid of his own minions and despite going for the Dark Overlord theme the dude is not exactly the big bad at the end of the game like the series wants you to believe, he comes across... more>> as a guy with abandonment issues. I don't particularly hate the vibe it has but I think people who praise it so highly only do so because they have not come across something better, like maybe the one hundred thousand xianxia web novels out there with OP characters or cruel characters or ruthless characters or game elements etc... Regardless the series seems to be doing well for itself and in all honesty it's not terrible or bad just not exactly top material when measuring it alongside other series with similar tags or genres. *** Disclaimer this is all personal opinion and it is in no way meant to stop readers from trying it, good luck to all you readers who try it and I hope you enjoy it more than I do *** =D <<less

Its pretty hard to give a verdict on overlord. Its both really good and really bad at the same time.

This light novel has some novel-level world building, characters and story. It is one of the best light novels I had ever read on those three aspects. However, there are two things that brought my rating to three stars. First, the MC's personality. The MC is constantly in a conflict between his cruel, overlord personality and his inner working class man personality, even after 12 whole volumes. It gets annoying really... more>> quick. Second, the amount of time spent on background-building of minor characters which survive less than one or two volumes is mind-numbingly long. Why are you spending that much time introducing characters that are just going into the meat grinder? Why should we even bother knowing all their stories if they're just going to die a miserable death 30 minutes later? I don't think anyone would care enough to know the background story of a minor character that's made to die quickly or fade into irrelevance. Overlord cycles through minor characters so quickly because they're all dying at a fast pace. It gets repetitive really quickly and you'll just want to skip through them.

Yeah now that I'm at volume 12 I might drop this series as a whole if it continues to disappoint me. <<less

Honestly, as far as japanese novels go this one is among top few. Im not going to say it has no flaws but they are overshadowed by unique premise. Some might say hey, its another op MC dark fantasy but it becomes much more very fast. First few volumes years ago left me exited for more but further on it gets darker and darker and just makes me feel really sad. It has comedy parts and sometimes uses le*d bits to brighten up the picture, but make no mistake. Its... more>> only novel I can think of that has clear depiction of real evil. Like one without edgy bullsh*t revenge excuses or "the world hates me" or another sugared kind. <<less

First time I'm giving a 5/5... I'm in love with Overlord. This may be one of the best Isekai out there.

Sure it has its flaws but I still like it so much. I'd say its a 4.5/5 quality wise (world building, character growth, plot and so on) but I gave it a 5/5 because even tho it is not perfect, Overlord is certainly an amazing work and my enjoyement while reading this was 200/100%

Simply breathtaking!

The best world-building; amazing detailed characters, intriguing story. The only negative is that "sasuga Ainz-sama" is a running gag, but it has its charm.

There's not a single wasted sentence. An innocent-sounding remark becomes a key point half a volume or two volumes ahead. There are no inconsistencies, which is simply marvelous when there are so many details. There is character growth in everyone. The author is a big fan of D&D, and sticks closely to balance and it's strictly known what's possible for each character. Although balance is out... more>> of the window, with Nazarick being able to stomp on everything known, there's a lot of fear of the unknown. Ainz has a lot of luck in some situations, but that simply accelerates inevitable outcomes and makes the entire series more unpredictable in a fun way.

Ainz is not a hero, and Nazarick isn't a charitable organization. Overlord is a JP novel, but it has none of the JP cliches.

Overlord isn't flawless, but in comparison to all the filler tr*sh that gets rated 4.5/5.0 here, it's pretty much 10/5. <<less

There will be no instance where someone will ever beat Ainz or his minions, which makes this story meaningless. The author doesn't provide adversary that match the protagonist strength. All the conflict, and adversary are mostly orchestrated by the MC and his minions. In every occasion its predetermined that Ainz and his minions are going to be victorious making this pointless and predictable. Ainz character decisions/mistakes have no retribution or weight to them that makes this pretty disappointing. I am not sure whats the point of all the scheming... more>> and charade with the Ainz or Momon personas. If the final plan is to rule the world or whatever, why not just do it by taking his army all the way to the capital of each kingdom and force them to surrender? He has an overwhelming power and many subjects at his disposal to easily achieve such an objective. But the charade continue... <<less

Overlord can be classified as a novel with some area is still lacking but it is a full novel. As such, it might annoy some people that dont read novel and just stick to light novel due to its length. It is very descriptive and the plot can be slow at time. You will find a lot of interesting conversation between character.

This story has game like element similar to D&D series. If you play board games or Neverwinter/Baldur's Gate you will find a lot of similarity.

The MC is kind of... more>> unique as he is a bit of a coward and paranoid, but he is smart (not your genius level but slightly smarter than average) and most important know how to place the best person to get the job done. He is very careful but this is totally understandable as he know he is just an average mage in term of player skill and there exist a few broken world class items that can destroy him and his kingdom instantly.

This is a misunderstanding dark comedy story with a strong op MC and side character. The story can get dark sometime and the MC is not a good guy. As far as the story goes, the MC is basically the final boss in some story such as dragon quest or final fantasy. He is the demon lord. Take some precaution when reading some chapter, it can get very nasty. Highly recommended as this is easily one of the best Japanese Novel in this site. <<less

Rough middle patch, almost made me drop this novel, but it was ultimately worth continuing with it. It's got the strongest supporting characters (I hesitate to even label them side characters) this side of World of Cultivation. It reminds me a little of reading Game of Thrones, because it fully exploits the LN format to give you things happening at the same time, but at different places and with different characters in different novels. For better worse, you can get stuck with the same character for a while before rewinding... more>> to see what another character was up to. The author does a good job at making you care about almost every character you meet, and the writing is fantastic to juggle the numerous number of simultaneous story-lines going on in the background.

This is truly a seinin novel that takes full advantage of it's rating, and is probably the only novel I've read that is a true "book". <<less

It used to be a good novel. I liked it very much in the beginning. I consumed everything there is to overlord. Watching the anime multiple times, reading WN reading LN. I used to love it. I had read 14 volumes and just came back few days ago and started reading vol 15 and 16. I have to say I am incredibly disappointed. At this point in time this story is just a massive incredibly pointless monologue. Like bruh please stop your damn internal monologue. I feel bored and let... more>> down reading this. I realised how much the story had gone down hill after reading just few chapters. I am not even gonna bother trying to read vol 16. I don't think am making a quick conclusion here. I just want the story to stay as a good one in my memory instead of reading all this pointless crap. So much potential wasted. Do I blame the author? No I feel like it's my fault for expecting so much more lol. <<less

Its Overlord.

One of my favorite novels.

Back then, I watched the first two seasons of the anime and instantly fell in love.

If like me, you have watched the anime, and want to start the novel, I would recommend to start from the beginning.

(I guess everyone tells you that, so whatever do what you want)

This novel is in a whole different level with another (essentially ALL) chinese/korean light/web novels or mangas here.

The streaking difference with other might be because this novel has been written by, and in mindset of an adult. Among all things about psychological introvert, different races/cultures and their foreign diplomacy, this novel also talked about logistics, accounting and even taxes! You WILL NEVER found it in other light/web novels, because kids would never understand the importance of accounting or taxes, if ever they even knew it at all :)

I was ecstatic when I found out my favourite novel and anime has finally resumes it's updates but after reading it though, the disappointment of the story advancement and misunderstanding cliché really bump me down to the point even a s*upid merchant and a very idiotic noble were put in this s*upid misunderstand cliché plot that I wondered, was this the selling point for this story the author hope to achieved? I really don't mind some of the misunderstood between characters for funny purposes but this has been reused too... more>> many times to the point that it's not funny and painfully irritating to read. I'm not sure why are so many people so amazed by this novel. Maybe they never have read any published stories? For the first few volumes, up until the end of the first anime-season, it was a good and refreshing story. After that? Just one big filler instead of a proper story. I've read up until the end of "lizards" arc and then checked spoilers for future volumes and decided that it isn't worth it to continue reading. Sure, it is a well-written story. But that is it. The plot... more>> moves at the snail's pace. It, basically, becomes a slice of life novel. Imagine doing low-level quests by max-level character... it still could be fun for a while. But then, imagine watching from the sides as subordinates of this max-level player doing a bunch of low-level side quests. Yeah, this is Overlord in a nutshell. In the first few volumes the author showed a potential for confrontation, showed some "not so low-level" opponents, and one of their trump cards, but then, he just conveniently forgot about any of it. In fact, in most later volumes, you wouldn't even see POV of MC, you'll just watch how his subordinates do their job, more often than not, from point of view of useless inhabitants of this world. <<less

If the story was made to end at volume 9, I would be stamping it with a 10/5. This story was a masterpiece all the way up until volume 9. Then I feel like something vital was simply lost. Idk what to call it direction? motivation? whatever it was, it was something that slowly developed this story well until it's epileptic eruption of brilliance in volume 9. After that... nothing this thing then becomes a far cry of what it once was. A shell of the excellence, once expected. Idk... more>> if it is because the author finally has hit a mental stonewall with his writing? or what but it has become stale. It's like Bleach basically after the fight with Aizen, I don't care who you are if you are a real fan of that story you can tell it just was not the same after. Maybe not even meant to carry on past that point really. Truth be told, that really sucks, cause this was one of the few stories that had a snowball effect of pulling you in. It starts with a great hook, and it digs in to you with each volume. To the point where after reading volume 9, I was just in a euphoric daze, with bated breath waiting for the next volume. It seemed obvious that the author was trying to piece things together after. Due to the rapid development, and that was well and fine after all stability has always been an essential part of his writing. The author is not one to let things slip, and I appreciated that it well reduces the likely-hood of unwelcome plot holes. As time went on however it became apparent that things had grown in a rut. volumes 11 to 13 then came to cater to the "Master-plan" which no one really seems to know much about. Including the MC himself and sadly it has become more apparent the author. The author, had always been good at tying this type of thing together. Even if the MC was left out of the loop, but as of recent he seems fairly unsure of where he is taking his flock of readers. As though he were trying things from this angle then posing to try things from another angle. With such a favorite story this becomes annoying. Frankly, I would have been thankful if volume 10 were just a look-back type of conclusion ending where the volume would show us the aftereffects long after the event. That way the story would not have to continue on so painfully. It did not come as a true shock to me, when the last translator, to take the project () graciously bowed out of continuing work on the story. As honestly it just is not what it once was. Or worthy of such an A rate translators continued effort. It was just painful and sad for me to read. The overlord gaiden, if it can even truly be called that. It has nothing at all to do with Ainz Ooal Gown. Momonga makes for a bland character alone. Rather his blandness in a sea of unique characters is what is stimulating. At any rate it has grown into a bore, a chore, instead of the thrill it once was.

Vol 13 Brought it back to 5/5 I was rash it looks like vol 10 10 12 was another build up and 14 a good cumilation. <<less

My favorite LN series. I love the characters, MC, the world, all of it. I saw season 1 of the anime and decided to read the series and I’m so glad I did. I've read several series in this genre and this is my favorite, I recommend it to anyone. Seeing the hero being selfish and sometimes evil is great and not something you see often. Characters are well defined with unique personalities that adds to the drama. Looking forward to Nazarick‘s world conquest.

I was introduced to this by the first season of the anime. Manga chapters were slow to translate and the anime was starting to get ahead of them and I was being left behind and wanted to be ahead. Nothing is more enjoyable than being ahead and watching what you already read animated.

As soon as season 3 started I had to read the novel version and was not disappointed. The writing style takes a bit to get used to as it was so different from what I usually read, but... more>> once you get used to it it's amazing. Overall, it had very much earned being animated. <<less

I have followed Overlord since its release and read every translation there is for the light novel version. I love it.

It is a story with an op neutral/evil protagonist, depending on your perspective; and you can read about how great this novel is in the review section and the subreddit. Blah blah blah

As for the flaws, personally speaking, the protagonist comes off too soft in his stance. He goes with his subordinates' decisions in the later parts of the novel and doubts himself quite frequently, even though as the currently... more>> strongest character, he is absolute, and the npcs follow his order. That softness is a bit annoying. <<less
