The previous lords have committed as many atrocities as possible to fill their bellies. I, the only daughter of that house, had discovered that my servant and lover was a spy.

And as the people wanted, my life ended with my execution.

However, with the memory of getting beheaded intact, I began a new life. I was planning to shoulder the sins of my past life and become a nun, but by some trick of fate, I came to work as a maid for the current lord.

Under my former lover, whose name, age and even hair colour were all lies.

This novel made me cry a fair bit. The story setup doesn't seem unique, but it's told in such a unique way that it's the sort of novel you can still remember clearly nearly 2 years later. One reviewer hit the nail on the head when (s) he described the novel as "masochistic" because reading this novel is like gouging yourself in the heart over and over. We have a self-deprecating MC who considers herself a villain for ignorantly benefiting off the crime of her family members (one of the... more>> very unique things about this novel- ignorance isn't an excuse) and takes on the hate of an entire country, punishing herself so extremely that her second life is basically for penance as well. We have an ML who sacrificed his own desires for the "greater good" and has nothing left but a sense of duty and a heart full of remorse. Every description of their lives is painful. You can feel the bleakness and hopelessness in their mere existences; they live just because they haven't died yet.

Luckily, we also have a handful of characters who know the real truth: the innocence behind the villainess and the repentance behind the revolutionary and, though their motives aren't always pure, their actions help the MC and ML come to terms with the painful past and find hope in the future.

Honestly, it's difficult to call this a romance because there's much more pain than love, but it's hard to see it as anything else either. Two people who gave up on themselves find their reason to live on in each other and if that ain't romantic, I don't know what is. <<less

Haven't read this yet but (I've read it now) I did get a look at the manga. I get why people hate the ML, but here's the thing, what he didn't wasn't just about him and her. If she were actually an evil or selfish villainess people might even applaud him, because in the end he DID do the right thing. Not by the woman he professed to love, but by the people who didn't deserve to be oppressed by the nobles. Yeah I feel sorry for the MC as... more>> well, but her one life can't be put over hundreds, possibly thousands of others, people. He wanted to save the MC by sending her somewhere far where no one could bother her (in his hometown no less) but here's the thing, other people would not have been happy to keep her alive. I'm sure he knew himself, but if she'd lived he would have been ousted and they would have killed her anyway, and still he wanted to try. I'm sure the reason why people won't forgive what he did to her family is because the story is pretty vague on exactly how her family was evil. If it was to the point where people couldn't move freely in the streets, I'd like to know the details of their crimes besides enjoying lavish lifestyles as well. But he did right by those people. The story is almost no angst at all, it doesn't do well to show the emotional turmoil of the ML either. But in the end, the MC did choose for herself, she chose to die with her family, so I don't put her death on the ML at all. She thrust herself into the role of a villainess, if she'd admitted to her ignorance in everything she might have gotten some people on her side, but that she didn't do this is her own choice. I'm sure the ML didn't want to be the one to kill the woman he loved either, but she made the choice for them, and he went along with it. He did regret killing her.

Spoiler

This part I haven't personally read but I saw in comments that he'd planned to commit su*cide after her death but didn't only because the people needed him. I'll be reading the story again from the beginning, I just wanted to see what happened after where I stopped in the manga.

[collapse]

There is so much potential for good angst, but this story is on the lighter side for a tragedy.

As for him not trusting her and telling her, well. He was leading a rebellion against her family. If not him, someone else would have plotted their deaths, it just happened to be the ML. The end game was the downfall of her family so he had no way to know whether she would be on her family's side or on his. If he came out and told her and in her ignorance she warned her family, many people would probably have died pointlessly.

Actually, there was another similar story, at least in the beginning part, where I absolutely didn't want the MC and ML to get together. I can't remember my exact reasons, but this novel did something better because I actually believe they belong together. It was a far angsty novel only the MC wasn't reborn, time went back. <<less

This story broke my heart. The beginning is especially heart wrenching and unlike a lot of other reincarnation stories that I've read, it takes ML a long time to get over it. I truly appreciate the way they emphasize feelings in this story (without going overboard), the character development is very nice to see. Also the manga looks really good! I did find and read it first before turning to NU.

Maybe it's just new to someone like me who usually avoids tragedy stories though?

There are some things left unexplained, especially... more>> the political side of things, I kind of wish the author wouldn't come up with ideas then not finish them. Another thing is the side characters, it would be nice to see more of their stories and personalities, they made me so curious!

Overall it's a good story worth putting in enough time for 20 chapters to read. <<less

One of my all-time favorites, and I have re-read it several times. It's tragic enough that you'll want to have a tissue box nearby, but the journey and ending is so satisfying that I'd recommend re-read and re-living the reading experience.

So, the story begins with the tragic death of the protagonist where the end of call the espionage has already ended, and a solution to the conflict within the country and revolutionary war is ending.

The protagonist later reincarnates and meets her lover, a lover that betrayer her in her past... more>> life to save a country, and tries to reconcile the differences she's noticed in her current life and her lover.
Spoiler

When she notices all these differences, she feels conflicted, and realizes she has loved and will continue to love her lover.

[collapse]
I find that this conflict is wonderfully expressed in the book, and the author really goes out of their way to show how the protagonist does not change immediately - especially noting that people are a product of their past. It's not a simple love story, but a rather one of duty, loyalty and guilt - one of reconciliation of the past and present.

I find that the first few chapters to be the most memorable, since we really start to empathize for the MC and wonder how she will deal with having to serve someone she's been betrayed by. In particular, I've always had a soft-spot for protagonists that play the villain, and are meaningfully self-destructive as a means to an end (in this case, the restoration of the nation of Laius and to dissuade the male MC from feeling any guilt). However, that doesn't mean that the journey the female MC and male MC reach their happy ending is any less heart-wrenching and bittersweet.

Overall, the story is well-worth the time to read, especially since it's not a long story, with only 20 chapters and a few ongoing omake epilogue chapters (at the moment 6 extra chapters). I'd recommend this story to just about anyone. <<less

So good! I was hesitant to start this at first, but this was so good!!!

Just give it a try -- it's a relatively short novel and you won't regret it.

Summary:

... more>> An ignorant young lady is beheaded for her family's crimes after the betrayal of her servant/lover. When she is reborn, she's determined to carry the sins of her past life and become a nun. However, she unwillingly becomes a maid for the current lord -- her former love.

Plot:

Even though the plot sounds simple, it wasn't predictable at all and was executed very well. The characters are refreshingly honest, their character development is thoughtfully done, and the pacing moves quickly. This is a novel that you can finish in one night, but it won't leave you feeling rushed or empty.

This is definitely a tragic romance, and reading it will make your emotions go on a rollercoaster from angry, to depressed, to tragically joyful, to panicked, to angry, to joyful again... I cried a little, too. But the ending is satisfying.

Translation:

The English isn't 100% perfect (maybe 90%), but the translation is still good and properly conveys the feelings and visuals in a beautiful way.

I also didn't even realize that this was a Japanese novel when I first started reading this. It is so much less cheesy and artificial than a lot of other Japanese LNs. (You know what I mean... without the usual 「Kyaa!」, choppy dialogue, and perfect girls/beta males.) Reading it was like a breath of fresh air. <<less

I read it first as a manga but it isn't as updated as the novel so I switched after finishing the manga.

The novel is really really good at stirring emotion. I found the dialogues really meaningful, and the characters pretty relatable. I love the inner conflict of the characters, and it's so painful to read about the guilt they carry because of the love they have.

Sure it screams shoujo cause everything was done because of love and stuff but I think that's part of the beauty of this novel. Like... more>> the pure selflessness and love of the characters and the sacrifices they made, a world built on love and wanting the best for others is pretty sweet

Spoiler

MY FAVE PART IS THE PART WHERE SHE FINDS HER GRAVE :c I really cried a lot :c cause this whole time she felt so evil and "why am I even alive" for being naive and that everyone was treating her kindly but secretly resenting her and cursing her behind her back so seeing her grave and all the offerings made her realize that she was loved all this time :c

I basically agree with the other reviews. Was it written to perfection? No.

The actions and positionings of the characters need work. I was barely able to picture their physical interactions to each other. The reason for said reincarnation along with other/s wasnt fully explored and explained. There were also spots, especially in the MC's storyline regarding her previous life that could've been not left blank on purpose, and told differently instead as a red herring. Also the side characters were a bit.... flat. more chapters overall might've allowed the exploration... more>> of them.

What I did love was the emotional complexity and the exploration thereof of someone in their position. MC's and soulmate. The grave visit ugh....i cried. It was a slow (ish) journey that paid of nicely. I was very much invested in the characters. The wording that some here said to be unnecessary I absolutely enjoyed. It lent depth to the supposed time period of the characters and how the MC herself was raised.

Idk if there is one but I would've liked a pov chapter of the man starting childhood until the actual betrayal itself. <<less

A really nice read. I wasn't expecting it to be so engrossing. I was just bored and looking arround when I found it. The story is very well done and also very heartbreaking for the majority of it. The one thing that was lacking was that it was never explained why Shirley reincarnated, but that's not really nessasary to the story. Shirley's own (depressing) take on it was that her sins very so heavy, that even hell couldn't erase them. So she was spit back out to continue shouldering her... more>> sins. The story is depressing a lot of the time, but also lighthearted at others. The one thing I liked the most about it (other than the plot) was that it was written very well. The author was very good at invoking the right emotions for the current scene and I think it was paced well. Personally I enjoyed the first 10 chapters more than the last ten chapters. But I am glad that the seceond half ended with a happy ending. I definitely recommend this novel. <<less

One of the stories that I really love, seriously. I really cry a bucket in this.

Even though I really love the story. I will list all the negative thing in the story.

I think the only down side in the story is the pacing of the story. You will really notice it when you read for quite some time until the end.

And also the ending, it's quite. How can I say this, it's quite relax. Is she really forgiving and forget everything? That's the only negative side I found in the... more>> story.

I'm still looking for something and much longer chapters. I can't deny that it really develops fast in the middle until the end.

Positive side is the story plot is really unique. It's quite hard to find a reincarnation plot with full of angst.

I really love the idea that her love for the guy is the reason for her family collapse.

And also for the characters.
Kaid the ML, he becomes the MP at the start. So he can make the kingdom a good place. Without any corruptions and bad deed. Even though he don't want the lady to die. But the MC choose to accept a crime to be together with her family. And she did died together with them.

Also for the lady, which is reincarnated and called Shirley in her new life. She is off to walk as a maid. She only wants to live in the monastery to pray for all the wrong deeds that her past family deed. Mature for his age.
Coincidentally she meets Kaid while she is also hiding. She doesn't even want to meet with him and hide everything.

It's really a deep and angst like story.

If you are not fond of this kind of genre. It's better to not read it. <<less

The story was good, but it was a difficult read. If you look bat the backbone structure of this story, it was well thought out and had a good conflict to a good progress, to a good ending. My main issue was that in between describing the main story, there tends to be narrations from the MC that goes off an a tangent. It doesn't add to the story, but it's like reading a story written by someone who has ADHD. You lose focus of the main story and then... more>> lose interest. You're halfway through reading the the MC inner monologue and then you're like "wait, what's happening again???". It could have been structured way better. I also felt that this story was trying to be too deep or poetic. Instead of straight up describing a scene and the events going on around, it tries to be metaphorical to describe the situation instead, leaving you feel confused as to what actually happened. I think this story would have been better as a manga and not a LN.

Spoiler

There was this one scene where the MC described that her vision was dyed with red. I didn't know if she was hallucinating from trauma and her vision was going out or if there was actual blood in front of her.

I read all the reviews....I can't top them. Just read those for a good description. This is basically just my comments.

JESUS CHRIST ON A STICK!!!! This was possible the most unexpectedly emotionally investing stories I've ever read. I was expecting a cute little read, maybe a little darkness and stuff, BUT NO. NONONONONONONOO, the author decided to really play with the lines of good and evil here.

I'm going to get really serious here though......*loudly moves forward to get closer to the nonexistent camera for a serious close up*......I CRIED 4... more>> TIMES READING THIS........I made a mistake binge reading this. this.... This..... THIS WAS TOO INTENSE OF EMOTIONS FOR ME TO HANDLE!!!

I don't even want to make any other comments. I feel like I'm covering the emotion bases of this story pretty well.... look, just read the book. You can't get the amount of FEELINGS and EMOTIONS out of your cold unfeeling soul by reading these reviews. Go read it..... go on, go. Make sure to grab some tissues and be in a room either by yourself or with people your comfortable crying around while they look on with confusion because they didn't read the story. <<less

Until chapter 12 (exluding) it was perfect. I suggest to those who just start reading to stop at the end of chapter 11 because after that it's really depressing. After the 4 remaining chapters are translated you should read the rest.

About the story: heartwrecking romance. The story of young lady being reincarnation (actully reborn) after being deceived by her lover. Arriving to 15, she meets her lover of her past life who is now 30 years old and her lord.

Its not a story about revenge or ambitions, but a story... more>> about simple first love.

This is a decent read, with a lot of angst, interesting power and societal dynamics.

The main character will come off as aloof at times, but it's understandable after all she's been through. One of the most mentally strong characters I have read in these types of novels.

Interesting read, would recommend.

sigh

just a little precaution, I might be biased here because I only read a few chapters (I was frustrated lol) so go ahead and judge the story yourself

I was intrigued by the prologue. The opening is so grand that pictures the chaotic of the rebellion destroying the FL's family and the author does a good job describing her grief in her point of view, how she goes from a sheltered princess to a dying savage woman who has nothing left because even her lover betrayed her.

I was looking forward for... more>> more plot development, but it was shattered in instant when the FL fell for him AGAIN (or maybe she never stopped loving the ML, so the derision in the prison was just a soap opera act lol)

Spoiler

this may be trivial, but I was speechless when she blurted out that she remembered her past life like- oh my gosh

[collapse]

She learned absolutely nothing from her life. She labeled herself as a martyr and only focused on the (delusional) love for the ML. I don't understand how this can be a love story someone lighten me because prolly my cold-hearted a** couldn't grasp her 'unconditional love'

again, I might be biased here because I only read several chapters, but I remembered the ML saying something like wolfs are dangerous and men are all wolfs

sigh

It was my bad hoping the FL's character development to more mature even if she didn't plan any revenge, falling in love with the one who destroyed her life seems to make her a complete masochist.

I'm speechless so I'd just end my review here, I'm not gonna continue reading the next chapters cuz I don't wanna waste my time <<less

I really enjoyed the first volume (Ch 1-20). I came here to find the novel because I loved the manga so much, and got impatient waiting for the next chapter. Personally, I felt a lot of sympathy for the FL and ML and the pain of their circumstances. It really made this story stand out.

The second volume seemed awfully slow, so I don't think I will continue.

it was very fun and exciting to read it felt so fluffy around my heart.

at first I thought that since it was tragedy it would be a bad ending but so I didn't read it at all but when I saw the manga although I still didn't looked at the genre and read it I was captivated and when I read this I felt the question and hope going around my brain saying.

"why call this a tragedy???please don't let it be a tragedy or it'll be hard for me to... more>> forget again"

one of the best would be:

Anyway it's a very good novel one of those that had an original plot I recommend this to others to read it that is if you want a realistic and also warm feeling novel then please do. <<less

This light novel is quite good. I thought it will be boring because reincarnated story are trending. But I like the princess. Yes she was ignorant and punished for it. Its too cruel for her to be beheaded for that. Coz in juuni kokki it has the same pricess and she was exiled. But maybe to make it good author change it to reincarnated.

I hope the next novel will explain why they were reincarnated. Are there anyone else? And I hope to see the wolf side as husband.

Thanks for translating... more>> this story. <<less

Please pick up the translations, such a pity this marvellous story left half way like this ???

Edited after I read till chapter 17===

A melodrama that narrated by a grown up woman who seemed to not aged a day since her initial death. I do realize that I have some expectation on her in initial chapter but no, she doesn't deliver at all. I think I set the bar to high on this novel. ???

This LN makes me feel up and down throughout the story. The story had tons of MC's inner thought which bring so much feel towards the story. I could bring myself to understand MC's thought and action.

I love the romance between MC and ML, not to overbearing, and just pure love. I'd love more to read the sequel though.

Spoiler

It's a HAPPY ENDING YEY, I'm so happy to finish this with a lightened heart :)
