Alright, TDG is one of the series I read the most closely, despite not being that well written.

As a Xuanhuan, it's definitely above par, but mechanically speaking, the author strangely does not have a problem with Escalation, but rather Pacing.

You see, he makes a world that makes sense in terms of escalation and rankings. The problem is that he tries to rush concepts in and introduce so many things, while his own skills as an author cannot support these things. This leads to very rushed arcs, many mentioned-key-thing-once-100+-chapters-ago-only-for-it-to-be-relevant-and-discarded moments, and... more>> side tangents/diversions that utterly drain all interest in the story. All in an attempt to make the world larger and introduce concepts to us.

Basically you know True Martial World and how it shows every reaction shot for chapters on end and keeps on explaining? TDG has the opposite problem. Where TMW focuses on reactions and explanations to the point where exposition, character development, and breather episodes are ignored/skipped, TDG neglects the reactions/explanations in order to focus more on rushing the plot inconsistently. Entire arcs seem superfluous until the ending stinger, which is not a good sign at all.

Add in the "Supreme Person from the Future" (which most people forget - Nie Yan is basically Pinnacle Expert Existence already in the future, so he's going back basically as a GOD) and the pacing is worsened because the MC always knows what to do next, and knows much of the whole world while we, the audience/readers don't and aren't clued in until later.

Moving on, the whole "peggy sue" problem appears too, where the protag is too competent and there isn't much failure. Thankfully, there is conflict, and surprises the MC doesn't think of, which is great, but at the same time the "failures" all seem quite contrived and aren't developed well. This is another place where, as a reader, you will feel the author rushing things.

Overall, the main problems of this story come from the Author's rushing and lack of writing skill when it comes to proper pacing. The worldbuilding is quite well done, and it makes sense, as this is the second story set in this universe for him.

Some people may praise the "Fast paced nature" of this story, but it only means that the story loses steam quickly and becomes the white noise template struggle-cycle of bad power-fantasy writing all that much quicker. <<less

I heard someone say that xianxia goes one of two ways, either the beginning is amazing and it quickly falls off later. Or the beginning is absolutely tr*sh, but what follows is amazing. For the most part this novel follows this tread. Great beginning, and falls of heavily. I am not going to say that this novel is not worth reading, as that would be a lie. However anything beyond 3/5 isn't right in my opinion.

If you are looking for a decent read to kill your time, then this is... more>> for you. But don't expect some SSS+ ranked novel. Some people come down a little hard on this novel, but I don't quite agree with their opinion. Honestly you just are gonna have to read it to figure out if it is worth your time. Just don't be deceived by the beginning of this novel. <<less

This is one of those series that can utterly divide the online community (the other being Against The Gods).

The concept of getting a second chance/do-over isn’t unique, but it is interesting to see a Chinese spin on it. The technical aspects of the novel are actually quite good. The writing isn’t boring: there is action, there is some humor (mainly childish interactions), there is romance. The main characters are well defined though some are pretty much forgotten later on. The pacing is decent, there is always something happening in every... more>> chapter instead of just descriptions of powering up.

So where does the hate come from? I’m guessing from the MC itself. Nie Li’s backstory and premise is actually interesting, but it is his very characterization when dealing with older people who are actually going to be on his side after proving himself that ruins my initial opinions of him. Despite retaining his experience from his previous life, we see little of his maturity. Readers might also find it creepy that he is basically deciding the futures of those around him, nudging and pushing others to fulfill his vision; including his love life. Other than the displays of his knowledge and occasional drama with his love interest (s), Nie Li acts and behaves just like a brat.

Spoilers:

Spoiler

This negative opinion was further solidified in the City arc. I do not understand the author’s decision to have Nie Li make the fool out of his potential father-in-law who was the City Lord, deliberately antagonizing him for absolutely no reason except that he can do so with impunity. But no, we have the ruler of the city being humbled just so that the MC could have a little bit of fun. Nie Li even acknowledges that it was his own fault for making a horrendous first impression on the city lord but that doesn’t stop him from directly challenging and mocking his dignity. There are times I wish the daughter was there to see the times when Nie Li all but destroyed his dignity so that her initial fears for him would evaporate. One would think you would show more tact when dealing with your potential father-in-law and other allies in defending your precious home.

It may seem a minor thing, but it really affected my opinion of the MC. I guess I just think those displays of bravado were utterly pointless, there are plenty of other ways to demonstrate his strengths and prove his worth to the City Lord. He actually does go on to earn merits, and yet still doesn’t stop berating and brow-beating the man who had the responsibility to defend the city from waves of monstrous annihilation time and again.

By the time you come across my review the story would have long moved past this arc. I am still reading this story, but if someone asks me what is the most memorable thing besides the initial time-travel/second chance premise that sticks out about the story it would be the above few paragraphs. Everything else can be found in other xianxia novels: being shameless in pursuing the girl, offending powerful people, auctions, shocking people with overpowered skills and knowledge beyond one’s age, finding treasures and an immortal teacher-like being... all the tropes and events commonly associated with the genre.

My complaints might mean nothing to most readers at all. Don’t get me wrong, it is still a very solidly written story. If you like arrogant or very confident MCs, this is one that is written deeper than most. <<less

By all accounts Nie Li from TDG is one of the more generous and monogomous MCs in this genre. Every cheat he has, he shares with his girlfriend and minions, and even spares a few crumbs for his home city.

As an MC, NL has pretty much the ultimate cheat – not only does he have the experience of another life, reliving his life allows him to know vaguely what challenges will appear. And consequently his personality becomes insufferable.

Actually his greatest ability is to appear in any world/of the surrounding... more>> realms and cities with a major cheat that will enable him to instantly grasp power/a favourable position/wealth and dominate. He clearly has the makings of a con artist.

Overall it’s not a bad read. If you like the genre and don’t mind lengthy detours, by all means go for it. The manhua is illustrated as a poor man’s Naruto so if you find that appealing, it’s easier to skim through. (One of the reasons for his abnormally cold treatment of Huyan Lan Ruo might be because she's depicted as the Sakura of the series lol).

Spoiler

His love interest is Ye Zi Yun, who he was with in the previous life. During that life she liked him because of his selfless nature, regardless of his power level... so in this one he becomes OP and corners her until she has no other choice...

While his attitude towards the Sacred Family is actually acceptable, he turns pretty much everyone who isn’t against him into a minion with his cheats. And aside from the unrequited love Xiao Ning’er feels for him, pretty much all the other characters are just one dimensional grunts that will be overwhelmed by him. At least he doesn't end up discarding them, and for an MC in WX/XX novels, he has a lot of male friends and spends less time pestering every woman he sees - he went for the prettiest and left it as that.

This novel is probably the main reason I have come to love “second chance”/”time skip” stories. I really like the main character as he (IMO) tries to change the future for the better. The goal changes from city saving to defeating the Sage Emperor far later. It is full of cultivation, secret artifacts, and smart moves by the main character. He only loves 1 girl and does not stray even if you want him too. Anyways, it keeps getting better and now I am just waiting on a new chapters... more>> from the author due to being caught up in the raws. <<less

Okay if your here for the harem, then I recommend you leave.

This is actually a decent novel where you have OP MC, actually a good plot, store and romance and this novel has it well and I mean WELL balanced

I also like how the MC uses his knowledge from his past life to help him out in problems that he is facing and not like other novels where you have a plot twixt out of god knows where to solve there problem. Yes the MC power up a little... more>> to fast, but one must understand that he was the strongest Demon Spiritualist in his past life, that stood at the pinnacle of the martial world. So he would have many ways to power himself up in the fast way possible. For the other characters in this novel we do have character development on a lot of them but at the same time I feel that for some characters he just rushed into them. But overall one of the best novel in character development

Great fights, great comedy, good follow up plots and a good climax, honestly great on everything and like I said at begin a very well balanced story <<less

By far, the best xianxia I have ever read, and will continue to read till the end, I just love how the main character, Nie Li, knows knowledge from his past life, and still remembers them clearly, even though it was a long time ago. The funny antics of his own way of solving problems and saving the day, will leave you laughing out loud. While his own strength is still not determined, he slowly trains to retain his former glory as one of the most powerful in the land.... more>> Overall, great story, great fight scenes, great drama, great character development, I give it full ratings <<less

Currently one of the best, if not THE best, Xianxia series being translated at the moment. Tales of Demons and Gods is a series about how an extremely smart and powerful person would re-do his life and start over again as a talent-less and weak teenager and it executes it very well. Unlike the oh-so-popular and common reincarnation genre, TDG is about do-overs and the creativity in the writing allows the series' characters and world to thrive. By being sent back in time instead of being reincarnated, we are shown... more>> how Nie Li's past motivates him to do things differently in his present with the same resources he had in his past life instead of being shown how a reincarnated person would take advantage of a new world and exploit it to their worst. This series keeps you rooting for Nie Li as he changes his future for the better, as it is what anyone would want to do if their past was drowned in tragedy. Fortunately, this series is anything but tragic and is one of the most addicting series I've ever had the pleasure of reading. <<less

Very good read, just wish the chapters were even longer. The lead character has a very unique and entertaining personality, among all the xianxia I have read so far, and this adds a comedic and different side to the story.

The entire premise of this novel exists to glorify the MC. In the course of it the MC has found no conflict he can lose in. And from what I can see he never will. This makes it boring.

The story actually exists so that the MC can have all the beautiful women introduced fall in love with him unknowingly. Keep in mind that he is only 14. The MC causes women to fall in love with him with the help of massages. The first woman falls in love because he... more>> massaged her legs, the third one because he massaged her breasts.

The third one was very funny as she was an accomplished 20-30 year old woman who suddenly thought it was a good idea to expose her breasts to someone who at that point was the most important person to her organization. After that the MC massages her breasts and she falls in love.

That should tell you all you need to know about how the series treats its female characters. But it gets worse as it also has fanservice scenes for pe*ophiles about how the main female MC looks in a bath in detail (she is 13) , the female MC is also the only female with sense as she doesn’t fall completely for the MC.

The series can only be recommended to someone who wants to self insert. It has no literary value.

The rating is 1/5 but if it had no female love interests then it would have improved to 3/5

I completely agree with the review below me the series is just lazy writing with one dimensional characters. Another point is the obsession of the MC to the main female character for thousands of years after her death is also strange to me. <<less

I read this and I like reading it, with the exception of the way he shamelessly forces his relation with Zi yun to move.
I also dislike that he does so many risky things while being still relatively weak.
Positive things about this are that he gets to one up the Sacred family (antagonists) quite a lot, he is quite OP in the sense that he already has the complete walkthrough in the 'game' that is TDG. Since he is seen as weak in the beginning, he smashes peoples expectations... more>> when he shows off. <<less

It’s generally good and fun... even from the perspective of those that might not enjoy pointlessly OP protags as much

on the other hand.... on the romance bit

The protag is a jerk... the more u read it the more it seems like he’s forcing himself on the girl... beyond harmless “teasing” for both the girl... and her family/situation... its not r*pe... but its quite literally cornering her... sure in the story it shows OO SHE MIGHT BE having feelings for him... but what hes doing is actually pretty f*cking horrifying... physically... more>> and socially cornering her and those involved so that HES the only choice type thing... to the point that some things he does are equivalent to mol*station in those particular cultural and social context...

not talking about kicking away other guys and suitors.. thats somewhat acceptable here... This WOULDNT be a problem if it wasnt like a main context of the series... but the romance part is a CORE concept and a reason why he does half the sh*t he does...

anyway... aside from this... while the female character are all one dimensional and stereotype-y and exist solely for the sake to fawn-on or tease/teased-by or destroyed by the protag... even that is somewhat palatable.. cuz the rest is pretty good especially the odd surprises...

I would have dropped it cuz the creepy romance bit... and im fine with the disgust factor of old man coming to past after 13 yr old girl (hes 13 himself now)... or even the shitty harem.. which I generally dont mind and even sometimes enjoy.. altho its the shitty kind here.. but still.. its the the other things that hes doing and the way he justifies it and how the story portrays the “love interests”... well maybe not Ning Er (only female character thats well developed and shows character growth)... but shes put aside anyway... shes never gonna be a thing... its pretty much solid how its gonna go

I would have dropped it but I didnt cuz the other stuff... so

Dont read for the romance... cuz it really has none... rather... its somewhat offensive

The rest is pretty darn good tho.. so read for that <<less

I like to call this novel.. "The ultimate dreamers.. dream..." I mean who else has to gall to say a god tier waifu will fall in love with you just because in a different life it happened..

Other then that with the MC's wealth of knowledge from a previous life he manages to get stronger and slowly woo a bunch of girls unintentionally...

I recommend it to people who like.. strong MCs and romances.. heh...

It has great world building and also has fast progression of the plot, the reason I dropped this is because the sh*t with his harem was getting beyond ridiculous.

The women are so poorly written it is almost a crime. And I am not a fan of the way the author constantly gives page long (creepy) descriptions of how sexy the females are when they are only 13 years old.

If you dont mind every woman in the story falling for a 13 year old then keep reading because other than this... more>> I have no complaints with the novel. <<less

I am one of the many alike here.

This was my most favorite one, especially since this novel is the one that introduce me to the web novel world in general.

And that is not without reasons, nor simply just because its my "first one". It really is a good novel. With a good story, characters, & world bulding. (At least for me).

... more>> But like others said, as times go on, the author "lost interest" In this novel. Thus the quality & quantity drop sharply.

Its still an "interesting" read to this day. But it had lost many of it's top good point. <<less

I have affection for this work since it was the one that introduced me to the world of Asian novels, I liked the first chapters a lot until the time came to leave the Tiny World, from there it became the typical trope of sects war and pointless lvl ups. This novel is good for starters but it was many big problems. First it's just cliche second characters are very rushed and not too interesting, like the characters didn't have a redeeming factor in rebirth of the urban immortal the MC was ruthless and he had a decent personality and most characters in it were written pretty well not perfect but well unlike tales of demon and God. Third they just focus too much on the romance aspect of the novel/manga and the worst part is it's sickening how bad... more>> it's written. Tales of Demons and Gods have a strong popularity. I rate it 3, 5.

I've got to say that the reason of it lies on the cultivation and ranking that this story uses. Detailed and with almost no flaws on it, this is a good foundation for almost a good story; and regardless of what other people think on the actions made by Nie Li, the summary says it all about this novel, being noble or not, he has a goal and I hope he accomplish it.

Even after the author's lost... more>> of interest. It's still a novel worth reading.

The only thing that I criticize, it's the huge amounts of characters that it presents to us that makes it almost difficult to remember, added to the slow pace of releases, it's easily to forget them on the way. Characters that apparently hold great importance in the story but suddenly stopped showing for no apparent reason it's one of the flaws that this novel have. <<less

I recomend reading the manhua first, because I heard the story is still the same. The reason why I recommand reading the manhua first because it have a great art and it explain the story carefully.

To me, the problem with most chinese cultivation story mostly because the MC is to OP. I dont have a problem with that, but even more problem is that MC is to arrogant, think he the best in the whole world just because they come back from the future, reincarnate or unlock some cheat power,... more>> and slowly the MC become like the villain in most of chinese cultivation, an arrogant prick. Luckily the MC in this novel did not become like that.

There not much plot hole in my opinion because as you continue to read this novel, the reason why thing happen will explain themself in a form of world building. The charcter in my opinion is growing in a consistant way.

Do try to read this, it quiet fun. <<less

I first read the chinese version back in 2012 or longer. Cant remember.

This story is never going to be completed but you can read it for fun because it is entertaining to read.

But don't read it for the logic because it is completely broken from the chapter 1 onward and the author doesn't even know how to explain it. Therefore this story will never be completed.

MC is OP because he knows all the OP skills from the ancient past. He is like the great teacher that helps everyone to graduate... more>> from magic class.

The Broken Logic:

Sure he got a powerful magic book. Doesn't explain why he dies.

First chapter explains he is weak and he is a weak student and later got the magic book to go back to time.

First chapter explains that he has cumulative alot of knowledge and go back in time to be OP again. But looking at the timeline, he is like only 2 years in the future only... so...

Yet, he has ancient knowledge from 1000 years ago but he is from the future... so...

In the end you will lose all sense of logic. His knowledge didn't really come from the future because he suck in the future. But somehow he is OP because when he goes back in time, he got all the OP knowledge. And he is OP in the future because his new reincarnated got all the OP skills in the future. That is why he is going to be OP in the future because of that. Do you see the broken OP logic?

The author also cannot explain properly and the story is caught in the back to the future time loop. <<less
