It's probably one of the best novels here, the story is unpredictable but in a good way, by that I mean that things don't turn out as one would expect but instead take a less convenient more realistic turn of events but at the same time the autor does not abuse the MC like many do to create something unexpected. This is one of the best parts for me in this novel along with the awesome side characters, the side characters all have their own personalities, they grow and adapt... more>> as the story progresses, and their existence does not revolve around MC but they have their own motives and goals. There are a few things that are lacking though, especially the romance is kind of bad, It's mostly due to the MC being a standard dense Japanese MC when it comes to romance I sometimes feel like Japan has a law that forbids autors to make MCs have interest in women like the Chinese are forbidden to make side characters, joke aside some female characters show some interest in the MC and the MC does not care and focuses on other things like being shut in his room for months. While it could have been better with some romance, less convenient battles and better background story for the world I still rate it high because the strong points of this ln heavily outweight it's flaws. I recommend giving this novel a try. <<less

I kinda tired reading all the details, only to be surprised by how great the last chapters of each volume. The story resemble to how Overlord and Dungeon Defense surprise its readers. However, because it mostly engaging with politics instead of sword and magic, not many young readers can enjoy it. What hold me to read the story further is because I'm afraid that the story won't end to my favour. Looking at how the story develop, it feels like the battle getting harder just as the MC admit himself... more>> as well in story. And I don't like that difficulty, please give me normal mode and keep make me strong please. At least, please kill that Fedom piece of sh1t. With Baka Tsuki uploading two entire volumes in two days out of nowhere, I decided to pick this series up. Currently in v2c2, and so far it's been an enjoyable read. The world is fleshed out (if a bit generic), politics are well-handled, and the characters are all quite good. The MC is a breath of fresh air compared to many JP MCs. Very determined, proactive, and isn't afraid to kill, but far from a reckless, out of control ragetard - he's willing to bide his time, and knows the... more>> importance of information. Granted, he's still a bit dense romantically, but this is perfectly justified given his past. All in all a very promising series. I can only hope that the translation doesn't go on a long hiatus again, since this seems like the kind of tale you can't put down halfway once you've started it. <<less

Man this novel is far more better than I thought it would be, it has got romance, action, double crossing, dark emotions, killing, and the plot is very satisfying for the readers. Each and every volume recieves an unexpected ending and make it more enjoyable for the readers. According to me this novel deserves far more popularity than it currently has, the most strong points of Rakuin no Monshou are that as the story progresses in plot the character developments are done in a very skilled manner, the world building... more>> by the writer is also amazing, the believable backstory of the characters and it general and the ways the reader can grow attached to a certain character......... This Light Novel firmly recieves a 5 stars rating from my side and it would like other viewers and readers to share this novel among your aquantances as well such that they can also enjoy an excellent work like this :) <<less

Rakuin no Monshou is a good novel, by all respects - it has enough flaws that I wouldn't give it 5 stars, but for someone a little bored by traditional deus-ex-machina shounen novels or the oversimplified world building in fantasy/isekai novels, Rakuin no Monshou provides a nice middle ground, with enough quirks to leave it memorable. The author mentioned in his first end note that he wasn't trying to make a psychological warfare novel like his previous works - that dedication seemed to end up in the tr*sh, because from... more>> any angle I see this series is about 50% politics/warfare and 50% edgy teen puberty. It's not really a romance - you can ship the characters all you want, but until volume 5 "romance" = "ignoring that the FL exists (or any female characters, TBH) for 99% of the novel, having the side characters tease the ML about some inner passion he's not really expressing, and concluding the novel with the FL desperately trying to tell the ML that she exists too." This trend unfortunately continues until the last volume, where the FL is kinda just a token presence for the ships. Although comparing novels to other novels is in kinda bad taste, Rakuin no Monshou is kinda like a mix of "Genjitsushugi Yuusha no Oukoku Saikenki" and "Overlord" - it combines the abnormally-smart-MC-with-a-side-of-drama from the former, and the deluge-of-so-many-names-that-it's-hard-to-read-the-series-over-multiple-sittings from the latter. Overall, though, it's a good series, and one I'd recommend.

Pros:

    • The author genuinely put thought into the world building. Characters are dynamic and 3D (although a bit cookie cutter - see cons).
    • The story is largely plot-driven. The series happens during a warring-states like period, and about every volume some major revolt happens in a kingdom somewhere.
    • The author is skilled at writing, and the translator is amazing at conveying that fluidity. Great work!
Cons:

    • The plot in every volume is roughly the same, up until v5 at least. "ML gets told about (yet another) country that's experiencing a civil war" --> "ML gets involved/involves himself in that war" --> "ML pretends to be incompetent to deceive the enemy" --> "OH NO. ENEMY IS SMART, AND ML CAN'T TRUST ANYONE ELSE. Minor damages. ML suffers severe mental breakdowns, but overcomes them with youthful passion. (this part takes about half the novel, usually with lengthy asides to show other country's PoV's" --> "ML recovers, comes up with a brilliant plan that he keeps a secret until the last moment" --> "ML WINS (and FL makes an appearance!). Tune in on the next episode of..."
        • TBD: It's a story with a lot of angsty teenage passion, but the author's skill at writing makes it worth it for the first few volumes. FL barely exists. Romance barely exists. But try it out!
    • While the characters initially come across as deep, they're still pretty cookie cutter. The hardcore enemies are all "experienced but musclebrained, " the enemies-turned-friends mostly turn out to be akin to a glasses-wearing smart guy

, and the friends are all "kindhearted everyday joe's." It's not bad, but it's also not great.
    • SO MANY NAMES. SO MANY LENGTHY ASIDES TO A RANDOM CHARACTER'S POV. It's really hard to pick this series up again if you leave it for a month or two. Many novels begin as a WN and struggle piecing together multiple arcs into a 200-page LN. This novel, I imagine, fashioned itself after a 600-page book like Eragon, and is struggling breaking the event flow between multiple novels. Novels might randomly end after a battle before anything is really concluded, and the next novel will start the day after the battle to discuss the aftereffects (v3 to v4). Volumes also don't really go over the previous character names and relations, so you've got to judge ~20-30 names within the first ~20-30 pages all over again.
However, overall I like this series. It's well written, and despite its flaws I consider it one of the better shounen fantasy series. <<less

Filler, the book. Or Idiocracy, the book. With a ton of absurd plot-holes.

One "campaign" per book, where the MC collects intelligence but it's all irrelevant, makes a plan but it's downright idiotic, and survives only by sheer luck. 90% of the pages are "the MC stood idle, did nothing, had X for dinner", and focus on irrelevant characters that soon get killed-off or forgotten. The princess gets even less of the spotlight than MC, sometimes the author remembers she existed (and she did nothing until then).

The world-building that other reviewers... more>> tout this for is not a saving grace. It pales in comparison to the likes of Overlord. Plus it's not a very interesting world; its people are directly cast from Idiocracy.

Humans have spaceships, flying jets/helicopters with high maneuverability, guns and machineguns that are proven to be extremely effective... but no-one uses those even if they're equipped. Instead they bash each-other with swords that break easily. The MC is more than happy to repeatedly throw his life away at the drop of a hat, in situations where there's obviously nothing to gain, while chanting the mantra "I'll stay safe to survive to get my revenge". "Oh look, a swordsman that is immensely better than me and hates my guts, I'll handicap myself and go fight him, to see what a fraction of their plot is instead of stopping their plot". [survives by sheer luck]

There's a dense MC, and then there's Orba - buffoon incarnate. That's often how a good series begins, where the character grows (e.g. Grid from Overgeared). At this pace and direction (he's being presented as being very smart), there's no hope for this his growth in 12 books. He has to hide that he replaced the prince, but immediately shared the truth with people that tortured him and would backstab him until a few days ago. Then loitered around town and showed-off he's a fake. Then restored his Gladiator persona, and had everyone that knows the prince well take a good look at him, hear his voice, and see his potential scars and s*ave-branding. Like Superman putting on glasses and no-one around recognizing him. Also he pushed away everyone with a brain, and surrounded himself with scum. The princess has shown she can do some tactics, but that was 5 years ago, now she's a doormat that's irrelevant to the story; getting her hair combed nonstop, thinking of balloons and dresses, trying to woo our dense MC. I see that for 5 books absolutely nothing romantic happens between them.

The strife between countries is interesting. Same for their internal strife and culture. But it's rather slim, and smeared with lots of idiocy. It's not inspiring, it's not intriguing. There are some inconsistencies. The people in power or trying to usurp power are near-sighted and downright sloppy.

It's a very Japanese novel, but fortunately without too much food and other overused tropes. Unfortunately it also lacks interesting quirks that make other JP novels stand out. It's rather bland. Perhaps being set in the world of Idiocracy is the quirk, but I don't like that. Maybe it documents the 500 years after the hairdressers from The Hitchiker's Galaxy landed on Earth?

The translation is almost excellent. At some places a sentence reads the opposite of what was meant, but that happens rarely and it's not a real issue. I might continue reading this series (lightly) only due to the superb translation quality, while waiting for chapters of vastly better LNs to come out. There is also some faint hope that all negative points get addressed in the next books: MC's s*upidity and luck, plot-holes getting filled, inconsistencies resolved. <<less

Competent enough, it holds value from world builder point of view, the author goes into detail and creates a sense of immersion, you can picture every detail of the world from the landscape to politics.

Unfortunately the lack of character growth is outstanding, the established characters don't really change, no one grows, everyone is emotionally deaf, I understand the focus on tactics and creating a sense of accomplishment but from the backstory of the MC (which is the most cliché of clichés...) he still holds the same sense of inadequacy he... more>> showed when he was a little kid even though he's battled insurmountable odds with his wits alone...

I'm not against those types of characters, but it depends on which kind of story is being told, if you are trying to cram "romance" into it, there should be a need for the inadequate MC to grow to be able to accept his feelings, and even though it does develop in the end, it felt incredibly forced and from the left field... and it took 5 volumes... and it was done poorly.

The monotone characteristics of each character make things incredibly predictable if you've read other light novels, the only interesting bits are succinct and over in just a few sentences while the foreboding of the fluff encapsulates them making them feel unnecessary, I found myself skipping whole paragraphs and when I reached the obvious conclusion I read again and found that everything in between was meaningless, not even for the sake of tension or tone or rhythm... just for the sake of fluffing the work.

Also... it's so formulaic that you know who's gonna die, who's gonna live, who's gonna end up being tortured, who's gonna betray, who's gonna be whatever the heck just by reading his dialog... there is no sense of mystery because it follows every cliché to the letter...

With this the worldbuilding becomes the most prominent part of this book... and that's about it... it is by no means a "bad" story, and there are really no problems with it, but it lacks emotion and rhythm... the gravitas it builds up in a few sentences is squashed by the next one to keep fluffing the work.

If you read books... imagine "The count of Monte Cristo married The man with an Iron Mask, and had a baby Lord of the Rings" <<less

At first, this series was intriguing with excellent world building, the plot was enjoyable and the main characters seemed promising. Thus I was quickly let down, after two volumes I've maybe seen interaction with Orba (Main Character) for 40% of the time and even then it's from someone else POV. With a lack of focus on the main character and plot points that fidget and p**syfoot around while trying to build up suspense, I was left bored and disinterested. The story isn't terrible but just seems to be poorly edited... more>> and has little to no focus, continually introducing new characters that rarely mean more than a passing glance. I'll probably drop this for some time and might pick it up again later. <<less

Took me a while to read the last few chapters. But this story is a rare gem. The seemingly simple plot overarching to create a beautiful complex story full of very interesting characters. Seriously. I've started reading this story when it was first translated and up to it's 12 completion completion gave me quite the fun reading.

The ending is a bit lacking, the author could have written a few more interactions between the MC and the male lead though at the end. Well, more or less its an open ended... more>> story?

Spoiler

If there were a few side stories I would have wanted to know what happened to Hou Ran, maybe more details on what happened to the other minor characters like Lady Marilène of Helio. Maybe even a few ideas on what happened to Orba's mother. The author wrote them off as dead but I couldn't drop the inkling that maybe... dunno.

[collapse]

The MC isn't OP but neither is he a weak. The other characters also added more spice to it, I even think the female lead is just as interesting as the MC. Overall, it was a good read. <<less

I read though about 2 volumes, it was fairly boring if you ask me. It wasn't excitable at all until the very end when the MC had his duel with with the rebel knight. I don't mind a slow pace series but I didn't see it going anywhere after reading the whole first two volumes. If in 2 books the series can't grab me and make me want to know more than why wouldn't I drop it? Look maybe I'm wrong and the series got better from there I don't... more>> know. However I'm certainly not going to find out.

  • Slow pacing
  • Setting and political drama was interesting
  • the MC and his "purpose" as a prince look-alike seemed to be really bad plot point
  • Even after 2 volumes I felt bored with the little progress of the novel
  • Characters weren't very relatable imo

Surely one of the most, enjoyable read without you being bored halfway for each volume. Once you start, you will read it till the end of each book with good conclusion and no unnecessary cliffhanger. The story is not overly complicated and you could grasp the plot pretty straightforwardly without unnecessary information unrelated to each arc. There is no scene that made you want to skip it even the slighest bit since you know they will have almost immediate relation to the arc, even by itself its intriguing and fun... more>> to read. All of the characters pretty much have a certain amount of significance to the story and you could actually view of them as a living persona. There is no particular edgy, grand philosophy or ideology, its just one of a simple enjoyment, immersing the world, adventure, and tale of Orba. In a sense, Its definitely a 'light' novel, but not a cheap, mass produced one <<less

Stumble upon this LN and glad I gave it go after reading the summary. It get interesting as the story progresses but due to the slow pacing, it might requires a few volumes to catch on. Simply a hidden gem I must say, would have missed it if I had given up early. The story plot is rich but slow, building up strong backgrounds for the characters, world and conditions as its necessary in the LN as it goes on. (E.g. To make you feel connected with the characters, emotional... more>> roller coaster as every minor details plays a role.)

Spoiler

To be honest, it didn't capture my attention at the beginning, but don't get me wrong, the story is still well written & there's action to keep you going, just not to a grand scale event & vast of vol.1 is dedicated to build up the MC as a "Fool" can be boorish. Knowing this is an old classic LN, things tend to start off slow. This is one classic example as towards every ending and hence forth, the story shift up a gear again & again. For every ending is breathtaking, kept me going for more. New gen LN I call it, tends to start off with interesting plots or an OP character instead. Not all but mostly turns sour, repetitive and goes stale later in my experience. A complete opposite for this LN.

PS: Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but truly a lost for those who dropped this interesting story at early volumes.

[collapse]

As for Rakuin, it's engaging to follow, how self justice contradicts with morale, strategy and scheming, politic and conspiracy, ally/enemy? Friend or foe? With a huge background for our MC making him human, mortal, without any supernatural gift or cheats pit against opponents that gets stronger one after another while keeping his identity a secret. If you're going to give this LN a go, my advice ; think of 2-3 volumes covers an arc instead of chapters, read on and enjoy. (5/5) <<less

How can I review this novel. Lets start by saying that I found it by looking for Romances. And that heavily influenced my 4 stars.

The story is great, the world building was very well made, and the growth that characters passed through was not only believable, it connected well with me.

As some reviews said, the pacing is slow at times, and I admit to have read diagonally sometimes. The ending felt a bit rushed, and the there was no closure in a lot of the plots detailed, specially the main... more>> plot.

But, my biggest reason for the 4 stars, was the reason I started this review with. The romance, if you can even call it that, was severely lacking. The author managed to create a relationship in which the MC and the FMC were more time apart than together. If I had the patience, I think I could actually count the times they were together. What. The. Hell. And the ending was so unfulfilling, romance wise. They actually managed to speak more than 5 lines and that's it. There isn't any type of closure for their relation besides "We need to talk." I mean, that's usually the start, not the ending goddamit! Yes, I'm very frustrated, because I loved both MC and FMC, and I feel completely betrayed that I don't get to see them opening their hearts to one another. Their last conversation was actually most about a lie that both knew it was a lie, so it wasn't even a good talk.

Crap, I'm frustrated. This turned out to be my first review at novelupdates, and it's just dumping frustration here. That's how involved I was in the story, and how badly I want this story to have a decent ending. <<less

This novel had a great potential at start. We have an imposter for the crown prince of Mephius who tries to keep up with everything going around him. Except that it takes the entire novel to do so. Which is reasonable since the MC is only 14 years old despite of what he had gone through. Still, I would have enjoyed he novel more if he overcomes his doubts earlier and plot progress smoothly afterwards. Worldbuilding is also a mess. And I hate bad worldbuilding more than anything else. Literally... more>> everything is without proper depth and backstory.
Spoiler

Sorcery, Barbaroi, the final villian, the secret helper (that Herman/Hezel guy), even Hou Ran are all just used in the story with but are left with so much a hint as to what they are. To hell with it !

[collapse]

The problem with this novel is that it tries to mix war, politics, and character progressions in a way that neither seems to be done properly. Battle descriptions are sorely lacking. Author simply glosses over every detail and throughout the battle you don't get what the heck is happening. Then, the Author simply gives a paragraph summarizing the overall strategy after the battle ends. Like, what the hell ? I was skimming through every battle, which is like around 60-70% of the text.

Spoiler

Now, this isn't exactly a spoiler that the princess of Garbera is engaged to the body-double of crown prince. The revelation of the true identity of the prince to the princess was one of the things I was greatly looking forward to in this novel. But, it ended abruptly in Volume 12 and the Author simply packed things up and ended the novel. So disappointing.

All in all, you may or may not like. Still, you should give it a try. <<less

One of the best Novel JP I've ever read, it really deserved more attention.

Story: 7/10 - The story is well put together, many memorable moments, you stop to reflect the internal conflicts of character X or Y, the political part is fantastic. It has a very good world building, each place with its culture, manners, detailing internal politics and its conflicts, but one thing was wrong.
-
... more>>
Spoiler

The part about witchcraft is that it was complicated, the author put it as the "invisible enemy", he only explained +/- deeper in the last volume, and it was in a way a rush to not leave a loose end, I think I would need even more volumes to tie this end or simply not even having existed, and having used another way to move the "world" let's say, and I must agree to some extent with other reviews about it maintaining a "double" life, but I won't go into depth a lot on this issue.

[collapse]
-
Characters: 10/10 - Many charismatic characters, some even boring, if I were to say anything more in this regard, I would have to go into spoiler XD.
-
Enjoyment: 10/10 - It was a long ride, reading about 2 to 3 volumes a day, as I said before, I stopped for several moments and I was reflecting on what was going on with the characters, and seeing their fantastic growth.
-
Overall: 8/10 or 4 ★, it was an "anti-climate" ending, there was much more to be said in this world and even explore other areas of it, there was no need for the author to have created the parallel novel, it could have continued, it would have been easy about 20 volumes XD.

Well, it really hurts to give this novel 3 Stars, but the weaknesses overrode my enjoyment for large passages. If you are interested in the positive aspects read another review, I just gonna rattle of some stuff that annoyed me.

1. The main problem is that the people don't feel realistic. So many generals, nobles and kings act irrational. This starts right in the beginning when the MC is given an unrealistic amount of freedom. In turn the resulting intrigues, wars and alliances also seem meaningless and awkward.... more>>

2. The world does not feel realistic, especially, the warfare. We have revolvers and rifles, cannons and swords. The guns are always mentioned, but do not have impact in the fight. Every major battle resolves around a melee which does not make sense. Especially, every king/general/price/whatnot fights with a sword on the front line. Ah yes, the canons... strong enough to be modern howitzers.

3. Sorcery. On the hand useless on the other hand powerful enough to rule the world. Everybody knows about it, but at the same time they know nothing. Not ONE bloody aristocrat thought about writing down what those mages can do and how to counter it? Yeah, we are back to 1 and 2. What was the author thinking?

4. Panic and shock seems to be the number one emotion of everybody. I guess after 10 years of war all of them never lost a superior officer and all their plans worked out perfect.

5. The Epilogue is a joke, in fact, I feel insulted. It was probably written on a whim.

One last thing: The romance is only a side theme. To be honest everything is a side theme, to much jumbled together. <<less

Good premise, but could have been executed better and fleshed out in my opinion. There's a lot of tell, not show, which can get very boring quickly. The story also seems very surface level while using imagery and detail. Many unsatisfying/missing character interactions or conversations that could have added much more depth to the story if done better or added, especially at the resolution/end of many of the arcs within the story. Many of the endings of the arcs feel like there was something missing and leaves you with a... more>> bad taste in your mouth. While the story is Seinen it feels more curated for the Shounen demographic.

Not a total waste of time, there is a good story in here, but just not for me. The author and translators obviously tried their best, and their effort should not go unnoticed. <<less
