True to the title "the wrong way to use healing magic"... The MC is really using his rare healing magic in a way that differs from the standard healing magic. His character began to change after his training but the MC doesn't realize it yet. At first the MC always felt insecure and weak, he never realize how tough his training. He never realize he already become OP. But he had a strong will to help his friends the two heroes. He kept moving on just to prove that... more>> he wouldn't becomes the heroes burden. In fact, he doesn't even realize that he becoming a Monster just like his instructor.

Its quite funny story, the relationship with the heroes is fun to read (especially with the otaku senpai). MC's instructor is a yandere girl, she was a very strong person that everybody fears, including the demon clans. But theres so many cliche in the story, we could guess what would the MC do. The hints is always seen at the beginning of later arcs. At first the stories is unpredictable. Later on, you could guess very easily. But still, this was fun to read. I couldn't give 5 star because the plot was too predictable.

And yess, I read the raws. The translator did a great job for me. I'll wait untill they released more chapters. <<less

I'd recommend the Manga rather than the novel but I loved the story. The MC is sufficiently fleshed out and the aims are well established. In short, it is an underdog story with spartan training with unexaggerated "Oh MC is so OP" moments. Enough mystery, enough lightheartedness and a nice story

So far a very good novel!

It's only weakness is pacing. Sometimes the story goes forward pretty fast, even with a bit of acceleration, but then the arc ends and it becomes super slow. Author loves dialogues a lot, and in my opinion does them exceptionally well.

Spoiler

My favourite is when the Hero confessed to MC that he's scared to fight right before the showdown with Maou's army

[collapse]

But honestly, some of the dialogues could be easily cut out to improve the pacing. Another thing that slows the pace is changing POVs. Some are just super, some felt redundant.

This kind of pacing made me impatient at times and I skimmed through next 5-6 chapters, then realized good stuff is ahead, came back and read it properly. Ideally the story shouldn't tempt me into skimming.

I'd rank it at 4.5 stars if it was an option, but between 4 and 5 it's closer to 5. Very worth a read.

EDIT: recommendations don't make sense, as always. A shoujo novel is very different from shounen novel, even if both feature healer MC. <<less

Chapters are short, but interesting. Honestly, you can read the first 10 chapters in an hour and decide for yourself whether or not you want to keep reading.

Of note: The take on healing magic is very interesting and unique. Self healing + insane exercise = ridiculous results. The reaction comedy from the two heroes is pretty good as well.

The only links showing up on my end are from ch 200+.

Does anyone have the link for chapter 1?

I've read this in the past, she highly recommend, but I can't actually start over, because there isn't a link for ch1.

It's a good action adventure comedy, in my opinion. Not a particularly cognitive work, but it's funny and has heart. The biggest demerit isn't the story, but the translation (for the first 214 chapters*). Pronouns are 100% random. If the story shifts out of first person, you just learn to expect that the subject will be referred to with he/she/I/they/ (other character's name) multiple times in a single sentence. So reading a paragraph takes some real mental gymnastics.

Everyone has big opinions on isekais, based on how well they can self-insert... more>> to the MC. Said as a shameless fan of the genre lol. That is to say, I'll reserve opinions on whether I agree with MC's personality or actions. Other comments have talked about that plenty. You should know what you're in for by the first 5 chapters. If it's your jam, you'll enjoy it the whole way through.

*New translator at chapter 215. Does a significantly better job with consistency of pronouns, and other little details. <<less

It was good until the end of the first big war... Then it gets boring. The MC's attitude of going with the flow was cute until the end of the first arc, then you'll begin to wonder why someone so obviously strong would just accept whatever's happening. Ugh, I despise 'Yes Man', but if that's your cup of tea then I won't judge hohohoho

Slightly better written than the average novel but ultimately lacks charm or impact so, personally, I couldn't get into it; got bored.

Strange, because you would think things like 'spartan trainer/captain', 'unorthodox MC strength', 'diviner fox girl', 'disappointing pretty senpai', 'demon girl turned <spoiler>' would make for an interesting novel.

The review is a reflection of how I felt about the novel. I lasted 2 chapters.

Pros:

+ New angle on cliche, but its lazy writing to use kidnapping (imo)

... more>> + Creative use of the "garbage" healing ability

+ Healthy cast of characters that don't pop out of no where and have their own POV

+ Imperfect characters - this I enjoy seeing as it allows more reactions to be possible

Negs:

+ MC has been broken and shifted way too fast (pure to typical tr*sh-talking adventurer) for too little

+ Other character's POV emphasizes the above, so its even more cringey

+ Very passive MC - he does whatever asked despite a deep hatred of it (no attempt at escaping this supposed hell) because the authority figures would "probably force him to continue"

+ MC defined by his power rather than him defining it; this can be seen in how very little of his thought processes are shown (his plans, goals, etc. Don't exist) besides his anger

+ Nice princess/king/royal guard/etc. Very 1D with only the Commander of healers having any personality (even then only being a mean streak)

TL;DR: Cliched story with a slight twist in that a masochistic MC suffers due to his commander all the while adventuring and meeting people (potentially leading to a harem) <<less

The novel isn't bad, I really like the idea of using healing magic this way. Just give a read to the first arc after the MC finishes training. If you don't like it up to that moment, don't waste your time because that's how it will mostly go.

-Side note-
The quality of the translation dropped in the last chapters. With that I mean that it seems fully MTL. (Or at least not revised). That's the reason I'll give it 3*. Before that it was 4* for me
-Side note-

The MC... more>> is the same as the typical isekai archetype so I won't waste my time explaining it. The unique thing this has is the twist they gave to healing magic and how hardcore the training is for the MC. Tbh, when I read the first couple of chapters I had hopes of this being different, but I was wrong. The story develops almost the same way than most; The MC goes on a journey solving problems and gaining waifus. Oh and I can't forget that he also surprises everyone with how little common sense he has (and how he denies it).
I'll give this to the WN, even if he meets new waifus everywhere he visits, they don't just start following him for no reason which is a plus.

That last paragraph seems to contradict my opening statement. But even with all that negative stuff, I am enjoying it. I think the only reason is that I like how little common sense the MC has even if it gets annoying at times, and because the harem isn't thirsting over him like cats in mating season. You can see that they like him but there's no shitty harem shenanigans AT THE MOMENT. It may change later so don't take my word for it. <<less

Seemed pretty interesting at first, but the same idiotic Japanese MC with his "I won't kill because its wrong!" nonsense is just tiresome. I don't see how this is an admirable trait rather than one borne out of naivety and cowardice. If you are going into a war against demons that are destroying the world and refuse to kill them... that isn't something to be proud of. I can understand if this was a weakness the MC was trying to overcome, but celebrating this as an acceptable trait is just... more>> nauseating, and it seems to happen quite often. <<less

MC is actually good (not your typical beta, calm and collected maybe, not thinking with his lower half or go easy when dealing with pp just because they are girl and they interested in him) but Inukami is a pain in the a$$ (like the name indicates, she is annoying like a husky dog imo). She is the main reason I rate this novel so low.

I came back after dropping this a long time ago, and.... this time I can't even get past chapter 2 and that bit*h literally kidnapping the MC and forcing him to be part of her squad and training without any question to MC. No normal person takes this bullsh*t except your typical Japanese MC.

An awful way to start a novel that maybe could be much more enjoyable regardless.

I give it 10/10

Good storyline, fight, character, waifu, and comedy.

Only problem is that there are no polygamy. I hope there is polygamy, when the MC marry the female characters, I hope cuz I want them to be together.

... more>> the raw is ongoing 2 or 3 time a month so I just have to wait and see.

But if he doesn't get them, or doesn't have polygamy, then it okay. It really does have good storyline, fight, character, waifu, and comedy. For my opinion.

So it really doesn't matter for me if he "usato" doesn't get married to all the girl who like usato.

  1. (Well I do care cuz I want them to be together.) Well all in all, I give 10/10

This is a pretty decent and well-rounded novel.

The world-building is alright, the structure is decent, the pacing is good, and the plot is a little boring.

My main complaint against this novel is its characters.

... more>> The author seemed to be trying to make the novel a lighthearted one with a some comedy as side dishes. But the way he tried to do it is a little scuffed.

The author tried to make his characters into quirky ones following the gap moe culture for comedy purposes. Yes, that is fine if it's just one or two, but he decides to make all the characters like that. As a result, all the relevant characters in the story seem to be incompetent at their job and there is no one normal. Another complaint is that the comedy achieved through this sacrifice is meager. It isn't worth making all the characters look incompetent for the sake of comedy.

The MC is irritating. He is originally you're generic beta cowardly MC, but after he goes through the training arc near the beginning of the novel, he changed. But, how much did he really change? All that has changed in him is that he became a non-beta towards females. He's still a peace loving pacifist who thought killing enemies in a war is immoral and even heals the war prisoners because he doesn't want them to die.

The relationships between the characters felt a bit rushed and forced. The MC seemed to be the center of the characters' thoughts for some reason even though they haven't interacted that much.

Also about the higher ups of the country: the author tried to make the higher ups and king look gentle and king, and he managed to do it, but he sacrificed their assertiveness and made them look incredibly incompetent.

There is also not enough build-up to fights and climaxes. In the climax that is the battle between the demon army and human army, I can't feel anything. The only build-up towards the demon army is that monster boar rampage and that questionable scene of the future. But the way the author wrote it just failed to convey the excitement of the situation.

During the battle between the demon army and human army, the characters obviously described the war as being incredibly deadly and dangerous, but the author failed to convey how dangerous it actually this. All that really happened in the war that is described to us is the MC healing some injured people and the fight between the heroes and MC vs the Black Knight. In other words, there is not enough background description to set up the atmosphere.

Another point I find weird is: (spoiler alert)

Spoiler

that moment when the beast girl showed the MC the future of the war where both of his classmates died. After being shown that, the MC decided to run away. This scene felt questionable and forced. The MC can fight in a life and death battle but will cry and run away from a scene where his friends died that has not happened yet? I find this part forced because it seems like the author wants the MC to run away so that the beast girl can disappear and the MC won't find out anymore about this scene. And even after that, this scene is never brought up again until the middle of the battle.

[collapse]

All in all, this is a pretty decent chilling novel if you have nothing else to read. If you enjoy pacifist MC or healing magic then you can give this novel a try. This novel isn't bad, but it also isn't very good either. <<less
