Empires rise and fall on the Yulan Continent. Saints, immortal beings of unimaginable power, battle using spells and swords, leaving swathes of destruction in their wake. Magical beasts rule the mountains, where the brave – or the foolish – go to test their strength. Even the mighty can fall, feasted on by those stronger. The strong live like royalty; the weak strive to survive another day.

This is the world which Linley is born into. Raised in the small town of Wushan, Linley is a scion of the Baruch clan, the clan of the once-legendary Dragonblood Warriors. Their fame once shook the world, but the clan is now so decrepit that even the heirlooms of the clan have been sold off. Tasked with reclaiming the lost glory of his clan, Linley will go through countless trials and tribulations, making powerful friends but also deadly enemies.

Come witness a new legend in the making. The legend of Linley Baruch!

I generally had fun reading it, although there were plenty of head scratches. It suffers from recycling the same plots over and over again.

The biggest problem it has is the absurd amount of luck the MC has. He keeps on tripping over mcguffins. While most of them have at least reason to be there. For example the Coiling Dragon Ring was found in his family's treasury because it belonged to his ancestor, that is perfectly reasonable.

But some of them have no business finding their way into the MC's hands, but... more>> his luck stat is over 9000 so they do. Like that one time he passed near the border to a world and through sheer coincidence an indestructible mcguffin just happens to be spat out at him at that exact moment? One that was being searched for by everyone in near infinite planes and just happened to randomly fall unto the MC?

That being said, the author at least improved compared to his previous works, stellar transformation is almost the same story, but much worse and with much more ridiculous luck in finding mcguffins with no reason.

In terms of plot, it tends to recycle its plot. So you would get the most enjoyment early on. When MC is not too OP yet and has to use his brain instead of just overpowering everything. When MC doesn't have so many combat breakthroughs (since early on comprehension is not really thing so much as accumulation). And because the plot hadn't had the chance to get recycled yet. <<less

It's a bit overrated, probably in my top 20 xianxia/xuanhuan at best. I give it an extra star because it was the first completed xianxia and RWX did a great job translating.

It starts out pretty great, but then everything becomes pretty generic. The ending is very abrupt.

One of the best CN there is...

Re-read it quite a few times already and will still read it when I have the time. It has character development and some characters did not forgotten unlike some novels where they introduce a character (villain) then get forgotten in 5 chapters or so, but not here in CD, some character will resurface when necessary even those not-so important character.

Great story but was a bit rushed at the end and 2nd half of the story pretty much forgot most of the characters on the first half.

BUT for me I never regretted reading it maybe it because it was one of my first xianxia novels I ever read but I have already reread the story 3 times. The romance isn't amazingly great but it isn't horrible or bad. The MC is OP with an OP companion with quite a few badass epic moments. Only thing is that when you finish... more>> reading you can probably make a list of how this story could have been improved

Read it though I definitely recommend the story, it is really good with 21 books long (around 800-900 chapters) and a lot happens so even though I said rushed its pretty much just the ending. The ending is actually not too bad just unsatisfying and if the author slowly wrote out the ending over several chapters it would've been much more amazing. so far this is I think the only finished xianxia over 500 chapters on the internet (fully translated I mean) as of march 2016 and it will be quite a while before any other long running xianxia out there will be fully translated. <<less

This is the novel that brought me into NU, light novels, and translated light novels communities. It has its ups and downs, where some parts I'm very excited over and others that seems unnecessary to the overall story. But there are more pros than cons. The author brings an interesting story and the translator (Ren) does a fantastic job in translations. I became hooked and finished all the volumes in record time. Recommended for people that likes the typical Xianxia plot lines.

This is the most exciting xianxia I have read so far. Because it shows everything to do with MC; like how he trains, his relationships, power ups etc. Also I like power rankings, world building etc in the novel. This WN shows how he struggles, slowly how he power ups. It's not like other novels where MC gets this item or cultivation techniques so he can skip realms to fight. It is due to his body and his comprehension about laws, he is not the only one who can skip... more>> realms to fight but there are also many others who can do so. It clearly shows how he trains to build his power, that was thing I like most about this novel. Other novels says he did this and powered up but in this novel it clearly shows how he trained, how he gained insight etc. That makes this novel better than others. I also like the fact that protagonist throughtout the novel is almost always same i.e. Progtagonists almost always have something to do with soverign of light.

Yeah, it also has flaws here and there but thats to be expected because it is a long novel. And everyone is saying how characters are forgotten but almost every characters are placed in their respective places and everybody knows that so, I don't think they are forgotten. The only character I truly find forgotten is High priest or should I say High priestess because how her life progresses is not shown. And yeah last volume is a bit rushed.

It is truly a good novel overall. <<less

LN That introduces me to China LN world.

Really addicting, I remember binge reading it for a week, cant stop unless sleeping time, I read it carefully to not skip any detail till I read it all, later I found more interesting series but this series still has the best impression really recommend this for 1st time reader of CN LN, the MC has good temperament, family oriented, decent romance no harem, love his bro, and respecting his senior, I must say the MC are working hard, he doesnt have meteoric... more>> tear like qin yu or that goddess visual picture like ji ning, but he work hard to get his power and become real god XD

like everyone else, my only complaint was it's ending rushed, since most IET story are shared same universe, I hope I could see linley and his family again and how are they doing, whether they make their own planet or even realm for their own family XD <<less

For me this Story has a special Place in my Heart as it brought me to the whole Xianxia Genre, I loved the Novel to the end, and always found it exiting.

Though I feel the End was a bit rushed, it is definitly one of the best Xianxia Stories out there, and the only translated one that is complete.

coiling dragon is the first xianxia ive ever read, and it is amazing. I marathoned the entire book (took me about two weeks, including the time I spent during classes) and when I reached the end I was super sad that it was over. Honestly, the ending was a little fast, it just wasnt up to par of the yulan arc

all in all though, coiling dragon is amazing, and linley doesnt go around killing everyone, he actually has a really good tempermet compared to most other xianxia.

The xianxia novel that started it for me. If it wasnt for this I wouldnt have known the huge world of chinese novels. Its also the first novel that I read that was completed. I just love this novel because theres so much going on. It started slow for me but kept on building up. It gets better and better the more you get into it. It started going down towards the end and it seemed kind of rushed. But overall it was a great story. If you love reading... more>> xianxia then you have to read this. <<less

Coiling Dragon, the first xianxia I ever finished reading!

Despite all its flaws, I give it 5 stars because I really think this epic is worth reading to the end, especially as an introduction to Chinese light novels. It has a remarkable, driven protagonist who doesn't waste much of his time on frivolous things, though that might just be because the author couldn't be bothered.

The worldbuilding is amazing, and I wish there were several dozens more books about journeys through all of the planes. The scale of the universe and the... more>> potential of all the unwritten adventures makes my mouth water for more! While the world of Coiling Dragon has probably been abandoned, I think there's enough material for an accomplished writer to create excellent spinoff stories which don't even need to interact with the original series.

I actually enjoyed many of the characters, especially the ones from the Yulan continent. Even though there are dozens of side characters, most of them have great potential and memorability (despite being forgotten in the story itself...). Despite having few scenes each, the side characters show a great variety of personalities and motives, so you can easily end up with a good handful of favorites.

Even if IET has forgotten you, I'm cheering for you, Black Scorpion! I hope you can reach Deity with your own hardworking power! <<less

this is like the bench mark I compare other xianxia to. This series have great world building and the character and the MC actually very real. The story is basically follow linley and his magical pet rat / little brother to become the very best (or the strongest) with a little of plot and revenge and drama so the story dont get stale. (Be warn that the last volume is kind of rushed compare to the early volume)

Although it wasn’t the first xianxia I read, it was the first really well translated one. It was an incredible journey to read this novel over the past months. One of the best, if not THE very best xianxia I’ve read. Thank you ren, for translating, and thank IET for writing this. Linley (the mc) is much better than average. He doesn’t act carelessly, and I honestly can only remember one time when he offended someone stronger and had problems throughout the whole novel, which is a nice break from... more>> something like MGA (which, btw is another good novel, just not as good)

Characters are developed well throughout the novel too, only sometimes characters are forgotten after a few story arcs. Atogethr, all I can say is that if you haven’t read it you should try, as it is a great novel <<less

Ah, Coiling Dragon, my first xianxia novel that brought me into this genre. I like to think of Coiling Dragon as two books: Young Linley in the Yulan continent and ageless Linley in whatever realm he went to. The first part of Coiling Dragon tells the story young Linley and his adventure through the Yulan continent is very interesting, to say the least.

Linley experiences a LOT of heartfelt moments, whether bad or good. The author did a good job making the various characters feel important to the story and having... more>> an impact on Linley’s growth. I’d like to rate the first part of the book a 5/5. I won’t spoil anything, because you really should experience this book blindly. Trust me, it’s worth your time.

The second part of Coiling Dragon... Man, so many mixed feelings. There were parts that were fun to read and immersive; I would’ve immediately rated it a 4/5 after finally finishing the entire novel. But, it never had the same impact as the first part of the novel. It didn’t even come close.

Definitely give this book a chance, especially the first part of the novel.

Coiling Dragon (Yulan Continent) : 5/5

Coiling Dragon (Linley in other realms) : 3/5

Final verdict: 4/5 <<less

This is probably one of the best – if not the best – generic xianxias out there. The characters have none of the extreme arrogance you see in other novels, and it makes for an entertaining read.

I’m currently at vol. 7 chapter 14. So far it is very good, also I still hate Alice for being a gold digger (hm, she dump MC for the other guy that have money so yea). Kind of good seeing her suffer was good, and damn hope she die soon.

Okay back to the topic, MC is improving bit by bit so this is going to be good. Lastly, I did not like to read Chinese and Korean novel, but since I run out of Japanese novel to read... it’s good,... more>> but I prefer Japanese novel more. They have their own good... so yea.

Edited: Finally finish this novel and boy was it good. I don't want to say much because if I did, it will become a spoiler for those that have not read it or still at a lower vol of the series. This is my very first Chinese novel and I don't know if I will continue to read more Chinese novel, but might if I run out of Japanese novel to read.

Okay, let's go back to this novel. Linley started out weak and climb his way up to the top (well this is common for many of these kind of novel anyway). It is full of action and improvement along the way. I like how IET finish off this novel... not going to spoiler. Lastly, it is great and might give a try to some of the other Chinese novel out there. <<less

As the book that introduced me to Xianxia, Coiling Dragon has a special place in my heart. Now that it is finished I do not know exactly what to say. I want to thank RWX for the dedication he put forth that allowed this book to be finished in so fast. Linley was an amazing MC to follow. From his childhood, first love, and finally becoming the strongest, I was able to follow all through. As this is an IET work, one can imagine just how much time was given... more>> to the romance but nonetheless it was still amazing. I recommend this to anyone who is seeing this for the first time and debating whether to read all not. It is one of the good ones for introducing someone to Xianxia. As first timer reading something like MGA as their first Xianxia just might not pick up another to read <<less
