Grabbing Your Hand, Dragging you Away

I am a princess, moreover, I am a fool of a princess.

Born in the imperial palace, my appearance is as average as that of the white radish and cabbages in the fields. Throughout the four seasons of the year, my face is always displaying a dull expression, eyes forever shrouded in haze.

But in reality, I know of the secrets within this palace.

Including hers, his, and theirs.

Just leisurely living my days comfortably in the palace like this, I firmly believe I can continue to play dumb to the end.

Taking your hand, dragging you away. Not leaving, you say? Very well, close the doors and release the hounds. (Expressionless face)

For some reason, this is like scarlet heart with a smarter and luckier female lead. ? Yuwen Rui???? (Love him)

Spoiler

This is like THE ONLY novel where I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM WITH THE LEADS.

The FEMALE LEAD IS MY IDOL. DAMN! She's not the "I'm gentle/virtuous/virg*n wannabe b*tch, I forgive you." She's a realistic, strong, and smart woman who knows what she wants. I love her. She's not the prettiest, nor is she hard working BUT SHE'S one of the smartest girl ever? If you read, you will know and YOU YOURSELF WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS GIRL.

The Male lead is a typical male lead, PERFECT AF. He's not the type of guy who think he "knows what he wants" but in the end, sway because he got drunk or drugged or whatever. NO. He's the type of guy who'd use one of the most precious drug that can treat any poisons just because he was fed a lust drug and the girl is not our beloved female lead (Ah LAN). He KNOWS what he want like our female lead and is very firm TIL the end?

As a couple, they are GOALS?

There are many love rivals for the male leads like Meng Shao Jue and a cartain emperor (forgot his name). But our female lead just doesn't give a f*ck about them because they're flawed. No, Yuwen Rui is not the most perfect but as a lover and love interest for her he is. You see, the other guys who chased after our female lead were all caught kissing other girls by our female lead herself (they're not even drugged nor drunk#Manwhore). Let's not mention the girls who liked the male lead. Not because they didn't try, our home boi YR didn't even give a f*ck about them.

Even as a girl, I get their obsession with our Female Lead. ? I'm in love with her myself. ? Read at your own risk, she'll bend the hell out of you BECAUSE OF HER PERSONALITY. NEVER did she become that arrogant, overpowered, nor untouchable girl, just, she's very REALISTIC?

This is easily one of the novel with the best Character structure (Very consistent and clear).????????????????????????

This is a great story!

The MC have a perfect poker face and her actions as a fool is hilarious.

The main male lead is hard to guess. You'll be left guessing who's the one in each chapter

Spoiler

As of c59, there are 4 potential male lead

1.) Yunwen Rui - The black belly cousin who's also the MC's gr*pe sponsor lololol
2.) He Liacheng - not sure of I got his name right, I'm just MTL, but anyway, this guy is the emperor of Yun Zhan, and also the blind child in the prologue (the MC is 9yrs in the prologue)
3.) Meng Shao - again, not sure about his name. He's the young master of Meng family, ya know, the brother of Ying Lu.
4.) Yunwen Xui - I'm not really sure about this one since he and the MC don't have much screen time (lololol) but he seems to be pretty affectionate with the MC

[collapse]

.

I haven't found out the ages of the male leads... Maybe it was mentioned but I probably missed it. Hope translator-dono can help us figure out their ages.

Spoiler

at the story proper, the MC is 15 yrs old

Overall good novel.

The persona of the main character feels fresh compared to other template MCs female reincarnation in old china novels.

I give it only 4star due to abrubt change of things at around 60% into the novel, including the behavior of the MC becoming different: normally you would call this character development, but it feels detrimental to the story in my opinion since it removes the funny way in which the MC intereacts with the other cast.

Expect happy ending but I don't feel like the guy really deserved the MC.... more>> It's just BAM feelings from nowhere on the MC. Or more like she got trained into becoming dependant to him. Either ways an lackluster ending. <<less

So far, so good.

In this story, we have an unusual female MC who is reborn as a princess yet chooses to play the fool. Pretending to be an simple-minded idiot to live a simple and safe life, while witnessing others' secrets and scandals... voluntarily being "kidnapped" in order to become a simple maid.

Reading this might make your face hurt (I can't resist putting on the same "dull" face as the main character while I read), but so far it is interesting and the story progression is very unique.

I will update... more>> this review later after the story develops further.

Update as of Ch.30:

The author really has a knack for fitting a LOT of plot development into just a few chapters. The story advances very quickly without feeling rushed. The writing is excellent -- mysteries are hinted at and it's up to the reader to guess and figure them out. The author shows instead of tells, which is such a breath of fresh air in our usual world of poorly-written, word-dump, light novels.

One of the best things about this novel is the ability to make you care about a character at the drop of a hat. You care about the side characters, you sympathize with the villains, and you're suddenly concerned about characters that have only really taken the stage for one chapter. I keep looking at the chapter number and can't believe we've come this far in such a short time.

5 stars. Just give it a try.

Update as of Ch.47:

This story needs a tragedy tag too. My heart hurts... the writing is too good.

The translation is flawless. xia0xiao1mei has done an AMAZING job at conveying all the subtle nuances and emotions in the story.

Update as of the ending:

This story stayed good all the way until the end. The finale won't disappoint. (Though the epilogue stories might... just a word of warning -- if you don't want to end on a bittersweet note, maybe don't read them, or read them BEFORE the last chapter of the main story.) Absolutely highly recommended. I'm putting this on my list of all-time favorites. <<less

I'm undecided on this story; on one hand it is very well written, and character development and story reveals are done well. On the other hand I found myself just frustrated with the MC, I don't think I've ever read a story where the MC contributes less to the actual plot. Almost everything of importance until the end happens to the MC, with very little interaction, or even much of a reaction to most of the events. I was a fan of the indifferent MC at first, but before too... more>> long I kept reading because I was waiting for her to do something, anything, of her own accord, and knew I would just be pissed if I left it as is.

Spoiler

As it turns out there are approximately 2 places in the whole story where the MC actually makes a major decision for herself.

[collapse]

All this being said, the characters are interesting (and annoying in the case of every ML), the setting and political turmoil make for interesting dynamics, and the story did keep me reading.

Rant about ending below.

Spoiler

The ending is particularly unsatisfying, as up until then the politics/desire for MC are a driving factor for every major plot device, but at the ending it seems like the author said: 'Alright, love/rescue scene done, lets wrap up everything else in 1/4 a chapter, add some "x days later" chapters and call it good.' (unless the plot is secondary to the fluffiness for you) ; after 3 ML pursuing her (relentlessly, and without any actual consideration for her in most cases) for the whole story, she picks one and for some reason all the rest (who all are in positions of greater power than the one she chooses) just accept. Despite the fact that it would be more in line with the rest of the story for them to try to abduct the MC (for themselves or to get concessions from each other), nobody makes a move. Boom, story over.

This story is a very fresh take on the reincarnation/transmigration trope, since the MC insists on acting the fool to protect herself from palace intrigues that she unwittingly knows. At the same time, her unassuming demeanor makes her a confidante to a lot of people and that just adds to the secrets that she knows and has to keep herself. Through all that, she's still a very self-possessed person who can deliver witty, stabbing comebacks at the most opportune moments, which makes for a lot of humorous situations.
If you're... more>> used to most chinese webnovel's sledgehammer-crash-and-destroy plot, this one is far subtler, from the perspective of the MC who holds palace secrets but refused to be included. There are a lot of foreshadowing of the trouble since the prologue but we are only seeing the start of the conflict now.
I also wonder who tagged this with comedy--although there are indeed a lot of funny situations, and the MC's rendition of events with tsukkomi added in is hilarious, the overall tone of the story turns very melancholic and tragic rather quickly. <<less

EDITED After I finished, and I still stand by my comment below.

My impression after reading till chapter 20ish....... BORING

I couldnt make a head or tail of what's the point of this novel is about?????

The flow of the plot is too ridiculous.

Dunno if it's the translation or the way the author wrote or what, just not interesting and too much confussion.

This is such an interesting conundrum of a novel.

I think it's most akin to Eight Treasures Trousseau in that the plot happens AROUND the main character rather than involving the main character. That said, the plot isn't even the most interesting part about this novel!

It's the style of writing and it's ability to seamlessly swap between tones almost at a drop of a hat. There's overt/ hidden meanings, life lessons both profound and mundane, politics/human sociology and elements of each of them are present in every single chapter.

I can only... more>> say it's a pretty unique novel. The writing is pretty great in general with plenty of humor and light hearted moments. (... Admittedly dashed probably less than half a chapter later with something heavier.) I think this might be one of the series where I like the overall package, but I can't give an accurate review beyond "very enjoyable" until it ends. It's probably deserving of at least 4 stars though. I think my contention is, does it deserve 5? <<less

The story is very fresh and intriguing!

The MC is unlike any others, she's not a total fool but acts like it---more like she's indifferent, detached and just carefree! She transmigrated to another world but only plans to live well and enjoys her dull moments, though she actually gets pulled into funny situations despite trying to be serious. Her point of view is hilarious, silly and discrete and it really caughts the reader's attention.

I like how she handles the situation with a very blank expression and I don't give a f*ck face. The other character's are pretty amusing too and I can't wait to read more of this series.

The male characters in this story are all cuties too~muwahaha... And our MC would still says, "MEH. So what? Are they edible? I rather get a black pig."

Slammed the whole thing in two days and man there were a lot of characters. I won’t lie, this is my first Chinese novel and the amount of names I had to keep track of in the beginning made me wanna hurl.

That said, the story itself is a pretty solid one. There’s not much fighting but if you like political scheme stories, you’ll like this one. The characters are likeable, and our protagonist is a loveable “fool”. My only complaints would be on how she “reveals” her idiocy act (well... more>> I spelled this herb and the blood clot in my brain left so I’m s*upid anymore yaaaay) is kinda flimsy, and the ending is a little rushed and anticlimactic in my opinion.

Besides my two minor complaints, this story was still very enjoyable and had me cl**ked the next chapter at every chance I could get to continue the story. <<less

Pretty sure this novel needs Tragedy and Betrayal tag.

[collapse]

So basically, here we have an innocent-looking female lead that's quite apathetic, although she's quite close to her eldest male cousin (First Male Lead—ML#1) that always dotes on her. This Female Lead (FL) is quite carefree, even going as far as following unknown guy just because it seems interesting. Reader are expected to enjoy the silliness of our MC, and the complications of her acts on our ML and her friends' life.

XD

Spoiler

YEA, AS IF!

The reason why FL is apathetic was because her trust and affection was betrayed by ML#1 who spoiled her in the past, only for her knowing later that ML#1 only regards her as his toy, even gone as far as to strangled her to near death because FL saw ML#1's mu*dered someone.

In despair, FL gave up and laughed in vanity knowing all of her life so far was built upon lies. The ML#1 thought she was amusing and decided to spare her life.

Ah, yeah. Almost forgot; her loyal attendant that was depicted as her silly friend yet cares a lot about her is actually a spy sent by ML#1 to monitor her 24/7.

It's only the prologue, but I can tell that I will enjoy this story.

It has a nice flow and is very well written and translated. The female MC is a savage as far as I can tell, and the characters around her are also very quirky. I have high hopes for this novel.

I'll give it a 4 star because I like male yandere and also these kind of royal/political intrigue/drama stories, but if it's not for that and the good translator I will give it a 3 star only.

  1. Starts out strong and interesting and all the character have their own backstory or hidden depths BUT that is all to them. They never really grow or have character development apart from minimal or simple cliche "because I love you" changes.
  2. At first the love interests are interesting and keep you guessing, but then after a while it is annoying as you realize they all love the main character for no reason. Which brings me to my next point.
  3. Main character is unique, she is inactive and passive to survive in the palace but it gets annoying and the one thing she does do is mostly resolved by everyone handwaving "since we used to be a family we let it slide".
  4. Plot developments are seemingly random and the pacing is a bit annoying as most of it the events that happen out of nowhere. Although there is foreshadowing, the main character can't do anything to prevent it. She gets saved either by the male leads or by some random deus ex machina of her family.
  5. Fluffy male yandere parts but sadly not that much. The development in their story is not actually good, at first she has a reason to be distant from him but suddenly she missed him and the distance is gone. Like wat?
To sum up, if you like palace stories with male yandere and unique heroine, this is a story for you but just close your brain a bit. I don't feel any love for the characters because it's so cliche. Like if you want romance you might read Twilight but prepare to shut down your brain while reading, except for this novel you focus... more>> on the characters and their tragic past here and it's still not worth it to turn on your brain cuz it's cliche. But big thank you to translators for taking time off to translate it. <<less

This story is shaped very well. The drama, heartache, romance and many different emotions that make the whole story, although short, very satisfactory.

The shaping of characters, their different experiences and beginnings, is well thought with regards to the absurdity of political instability and chaos over at that time period.

The MC is very likable and very realatable in a sense where the reader would understand her Point of View and her reasons for actions.

Have you ever seen a very agressive football match where everyone is very much involved and engaged yet one player stands woodenly in the middle of the field not wanting to participate, supposedly not caring about the result yet mysteriously unwilling to leave so they just stand there ocassionally getting hit or kicked? Yeah, I haven't either but that's pretty much the FL here.

She's bland. Really bland and passive. You could replace her with a wooden pole in most scenes and it wouldn't change a thing. Her personality... she doesn't... more>> have one, she seems to act just when the author makes her, rambling in her inner thoughts most of the time and the rare time she does make a decision or action it just happens in a way that is totally incoherent to inner mentality. She's a void character, no personality, no wishes, no dreams. Supposedly only wants to eat and sleep well but even snatching her food won't get a proper reaction.

It feels like the author wished to write an historical novel with lots of popular tropes
Spoiler

princess acting like a fool fro survival, battle for the throne, neighbouring countries wanting to steal from or invade each other, fake death, interpersonating a maid and eunuch, wrongful kidnapping, mysterious treasure map, obsessive, controlling love interests, etc

. No biggie, anyway FL is an emotionless fool and won't really get upset or angry regardless of what they do to her. Romantic parts are very much fan service oriented, forceful, "seductive" ML with yandere behaviour trying to possess an unresponsive, bland FL. Perfect combination to avoid outrage. Anything they do is fine because they're are just frustrated with her indifference or trying to get a reaction from her. Wow, so romantic.

The politics are also overly simplified. The attacks and strategies seem rather childish. Straightforward but lacking in depth. It's like the countries are solely the main players and that's all, they don't need to think of the population and other irrelevant aspects of a kingdom.

I do think the author has talent for showing both good and bad aspects of the characters instead of reducing them to heroes or villains. But that's all. The FL's only quality is that her thoughts are entertaining and the potential ML's only redeeming quality is that they are powerful and handsome.

Admittedly, I don't want to waste more time so I stopped before finishing the novel. Maybe some plot holes and politics will improve as the novel progresses. Overall, this novel lacks coherency. Stop using trauma as an excuse for lazy character development, okay? Even traumatized people have a personality. It'd give it 2 stars but I think the translator did a nice job. <<less

It's a better read than some of the novels with higher rates here so I will be generous with the 5 stars

Also, see that yandere tag there? That's a fair warning okay? Don't ignore it.

So, what's good with this novel?

... more>> 1st. The writing. The prose is superb and props to the translator for conveying the sentiment very well into another language. This is also probably the reason why I enjoyed it so much.

2nd. Plot. This is a well thoughtout novel, surprisingly for it's 'clichés'. The conflicts are real conflicts that would question your "views". That's why, up until the few chapters before the end, there's still debate on who's male lead. So fun.

3rd. Characters. Oh I love the female lead. She's Mary Sue but still, somehow, author managed to make her so funny, relatable and deep. For other authors out there, take note! Also, there were no appointed villain in the novel, because everyone have a bad side, especially the leads, but everyone also a redeeming side. All the supporting characters have well rounded, actual motivations that is not just revolving around female lead, even though this is a reverse harem, love that.

4th. Foreshadowing done well. Pay attention to the prologue, it's important. World building is okay, it's a central part of the story and not just there because it's there. The plot twist are legit. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Author really knows how to pull those heartstrings and also to flip ships. Haha. The whole time I am so scared that my ship would sink. And I just wanted to reiterate that I really like the female lead. Otherwise this would be a very dark read without her running commentary and sarcasm. <<less

Refreshing.

A story where the MC doesnt care for anything at the beginning because her heart is dead by her past life experience.

Yet her act made people think that shes a fool, unless they really really really close to know her well...

A story where the male lead tried so hard to make MCs heart move. either by bullying, doting, pampering, scheming n lots more acts. which eventually happens... near the end of the book. lol.

Short but good enough for teatime snacks.

Nicely done by this tl group. =)

Spoiler

So this is a mega spoiler. Just warning you!
It opens with her being kidnapped and sold. And she goes with it although she doesn't have to. Just because. It's honestly great, simply because it might just be the most perfect way of introducing quite a bit of her character and ways. It's also probably my favourite bit. Or at least ranked in top 3.

Then there's the 'rescue' and her time in the palace. Cue ML. A lot is happening in the background and our aloof and indifferent (maybe lazy is a better way to describe it) FL doesn't seem to care much but still ends ends up embroiled in it against her wishes. And then...

Dun-dun-dun she is kidnapped. Again. By mistake though. But still.

She is rescued, because, duh. FL powers + plot armour (+OP ML) =invincible.

A lot of drama and background flowers.

Another kidnapping. Though it's worse this time.

And then...

...

...

I guess I'll stop here.

[collapse]

Point is, this story will frustrate you not because of some crappy UST or useless misunderstanding and lack of communication (like most other novels) but rather because every time someone seems good they will turn and every time you classify someone as a 'bad guy' they'll end up having a good side. Like a really good side. (Except for Ah Qing. She's a H O E.) You'll want to be firmly on a ship until you realise that there's a massive hole in the hull and that sinking is as inevitable as the titanic.

In a way that does increase the charm of the story- everyone has their flaws- her cousins, her elder sister, her other pursuers and of course herself.

Definitely would recommend 10/10. The FL's personality is one that is rare for the usual trove of transmigrated FL. <<less

This novel is very cute, but got a bit cliche. Basically, with exception to MC's 7th brother, everyone else has fallen for her. And almost everyone had some sort of childhood tie with her (though those ties are not very strong nor deep.) Somehow she made such an impact on them that they're obsessed with her. I'm assuming it's due to a combo of her nonchalance and whimsical behavior which is atypical of women back then.

It doesn't really make sense, but I'm all for a male harem. The only thing... more>> I'm sad about is that she doesn't get to keep all of them. She's not really angry at anyone and they all treat her well, though they all take advantage of her in one way or another. Some people might take offense to that kind of thing, but, keep in mind, this is a fictional piece of work and even she doesn't really mind because she understands their mindset.

The humor remains throughout the entire book. Her story isn't really that tragic, though it might seem like it from the beginning. Everyone loves her and dotes on her (even her rotten ex.) So in reality, this is a fluffy story with some sad components sprinkled intermittently. Nothing majorly sad. <<less
