This is a well written story, that is, until about chapter 200. What can I say? I guess good things don't last forever.

This story started out great. There was very little I could complain about during the "Village Arc"; this was truly where the author was at his best.

Spoiler

Things start going downhill when he goes to the city, but you don't immediately notice it, or necessarily care, since the story is still keeping you wanting more.

By the time Jing Yan enters middle school, you start thinking if this is still as good as it originally was, and you can find flaws/annoyances that you would have had to deliberately look for before.

Then you read about his high school days, and you know the story is going downhill. The storytelling takes a hit and you start wondering why some of the stuff happening is happening, or why some choices were made. (I personally think he was much more worried during this time about people pirating his work rather than trying to get back into his groove.)

Next comes his time during university. By this time, the story had pretty much turned into your generic xianxia and you're left wondering just what happened. This was no longer the story you read and you are honestly disappointed, but you keep reading because there's less than 100 chapters left.

p.s. His recurring childhood enemy (teacher's ex-bf) must have turned over a new leaf and took a job at a walmart or something since the author never resolved the conflict between him and his faction.

[collapse]

I can't exactly tell when the author decided to start ending the story (maybe around c320 and as early as c300) but out of nowhere the MC just starts acting completely out of character, and doing crazy shit, and at that point you know the story is coming to an end without needing anyone to tell you. The way the author abruptly ended the story, and the ending itself was fairly disappointing. I honestly felt cheated (the same way we cheat them out of money) but at the same time glad it was over.

If I were to have rated this story based on where the current translations are (c47), I would have no problem giving it a 4.5 (if that were possible with this dumb rating system), but having read the whole story I can give it no higher than a 3. <<less

UPDATED

The premise is great, and I find myself already falling in love with the MC... ^-^

...

I was not expecting this, but it still remains a very good novel. You get to see how the protagonist slowly enters into the supernatural world and improves the financial states of him and his grandfather while also protecting what he holds dear. ?

MDL is a very charming story that’s a little different from standard Xianxia novels. The MC is a child in the countryside who ingested a Dao seed, causing him to become more attuned to nature and Daoist practices. His weirdness causes him to be abandoned by his parents and is cared for by his grandfather, and the current story follows his childhhood and growth towards Daoism. The pace of the story is quite slow, but develops nicely, with a unique setup and likeable and convincing characters. Set in modern China,... more>> the author does a wonderful job blending cultural sentiments of the time with the story, from the two child policy, rural to urban migration, etc. The MC is also quite realistic for his age. While it’s clear the MC’s abilities are not normal to the reader and other characters, the MC himself retains a childish naivety and is unaware of this, acting freely according to instincts. He has yet to display the arrogance, ruthlessness and calculating nature of normal martial arts characters, and it’s clear that he values those close to him.

Overall the story is relatively new and hard to predict, however it started off quite well and has a lot of potential. It disregards a lot of the cliches of the genre and reads more like an actual book than a standard XX story with a modern twist. Leaving it unrated for now but am looking forward to how it progresses. <<less

Believe me this is the best new story out there. This novel is full of bittersweet moments but none of them feel forced.

It's different from those stories where protagonist turns into a Dragon from a carp after encountering some fortuitous event. This story shows the dark side of such events and how MC tries to overcome his sadness with the help of his grandfather and his future wife ^^

There is cultivation as well but thankfully this story is not about some cultivation adddict MC. The cultivation system I interesting and... more>> author's writing style is so good that you never get bored when MC trains.

Please give it a try. It's one of the few stories where you will like the female love interest so share some love and recommend this series to others. <<less

Spoiler

A lot of the reviews are saying that the novel started going downhill after chapter 200ish but for me it began way earlier than that.

In the beginning after the MC came out of his 2 year comatose he started acting with maturity much greater than children his own age. I don't usually enjoy reading slice of life but it was really interesting to see the MC slowly develop his dao or whatever it is.

Then they got a new young female teacher in class and while they're interactions were fresh and interesting in the beginning, things started to go to sh*t when she fully moved in and was around almost all the time. Her mere prescense caused the MC to almost completely regress back into a 6-7 year old kid who's now learning the difference between boys and girls for the first time. Whereas in the beginning he was completely separate in maturity from the rest of his peers, now besides the fact that he's a cultivator, he's hardly different from the rest of them.

What really made me drop this novel though is one of the most annoying and cliche tropes I've grown sick of seeing in CN novels. The bumbling idiot of an overweight sidekick that is the bu*t of every cringingly bad joke. The "fatty" that's attached at the hip to the MC for the sake of unfunny comedic relief. The past few chapters have become a real chore for me to get through as nothing interesting has been happening and most of the chapters are about the MC and his fatty being nagged at by their teacher and the MC acting like some rick young master as*hole with his loser lacky that he only keeps around for his amus**ent. I really hate when idiotic side characters not only take up too much screen time but also indirectly dampen the mc's pace in progression.

I was really hoping that this novel was a hidden gem that would turn out different to the usual CN novels that I've grown sick of reading but I guess that's just too much to ask.

To be honest this novel really moved me. It's very unique and interesting, there is no fights or anything right now (chapter 6) but it draws you in with its detailed world.

I definitely recommend this to everyone just read one chapter and you wont stop.

I agree with one of the reviewers here whose ID is "cyndor" but I don't know why this user voted 3 stars for this novel. At the beginning, this novel showed some promise but like every other Chinese crafts, it breaks. It LITERALLY BREAKS! So many flaws, be it characters, story design, world - building, cultivation etc makes you wonder why the author has done that to his work. I honestly, super honestly want to ask the author for his decision to write the novel. He could've approached so many... more>> styles yet he chose to self-destruct. I will neither tire myself out by writing flowery words nor I am thinking of entertaining curious readers about the exact situation of this novel. One Word:
Spoiler

it's simply crap.

  • What this story is about?
Spoiler

MC is a poor countryside kid broke into 1st stage of daoism by accident that caused villagers and his family to break apart, living only his grandfather and you follow the slow journey of self cultivation DAO while dealing with not normal xiaxia problems, but minor but not less important problems for a small child that believe that if he make enough money his parents would come back for him.

[collapse]

  • What is good about?
Spoiler

The story really great start, if you aren't interesting setting, intriguing cultivation system, good supporting cast, cute animal companions, original setting and conflicts, no young-master/evil sect, more realistic side-effect of dao luck chance prime for good drama.

I liked how it avoid most normal xianxia cliches and random flexing and focus on a relative more original if mundane problems that a poor kid would happen. In fact the few battles was made in favor of it, in fact I would argue is 10x more in line with" talisman emperor" than another novel of the same name, because his use of talismans is alot more important in the later parts of the novel than the other novel.

As for the cultivation the author sold me that he made some research on what "RL cultivation" means, and avoided the systematic-cultivation/pill and gave a more "spiritualistic" felling that seen more in line with daoism and make other xianxia novel look something closer to a magic schools. Even if the powerlvl is on the lower end, with little chance it could be some sort of wuxia novel instead.

And like I explained before, the drama of this young man learning taoism turn in into a freak and almost break his family is great and more novels should learn to better utilize their drama, even if is kind forced in some parts you can feel the emotional turmoil that being different caused the MC and his Grandpa. And is clearly that where the Author is most comfortable with, while his adventurous solutions are endering and make a more believable power growth than most xianxia novels that after a few chapter they can already cut hills and divert rivers.

And while not perfect it also has a strong "Powerful teacher + dissipline" interaction with his friends that I always think should be a viable and interesting arc for protagonist that are so much powerful than their peers. And the only one that seen to build up "how to make a sect" from the ground up.

[collapse]

  • What are the problems?
Spoiler

The biggest problem is without doubt the change in tone, in special after the chapter 200-ish climax, like most reviews say.

I believe, that people like the Village arc because is very original in some ways, and you can enjoy this slice-of-life with hint of mysterious daoism that has alot of charm, while 2nd arc you learn more about the mysterious cultivation and expand the setting.

But then it start to look alot more like generic "modern xiaxia" with alot of powerfantasy, where MC is just flexing his school peers and gaining great power boost without any enemy to match, with even young master face slap and girls fighting for him on the school. And from what I'm reading don't look like it will be get better.

Is not bad and still more interesting than some xianxias, but is very different from what people are expecting from the author even if in paper seen to make some sense (to raise further in taoism you need to experience and understand "human life" and all it's joy and pains, so try to be a normal kid in school)

A very refreshing xianxia novel!

Reading this one after those ''generic'' kill-cultivate-loot-harem-loop xianxia like bathing yourself clean after climbing up from mud well.

The first 150 chapters is 5.0/5.0.

Spoiler

After that, around 200th chapter, when the MC ages 11 yo, the story deteriorates into grade B 'japanese cartoon' + 'american teenage showoff' scenes. The final last 100 chapters becomes 'sub-average' + very strong racism and childish dream story.

Almost all supporting characters are thrown away. Plot are half-developed before thrown away.

WORST story line begin when the MC enrolled into 'medical school'. The plot is as if written by ghost writer, who is 10 yo school boy. For example, MC falls 'asleep' for THREE years, wakes up with perfect health/mental but (almost) no one wonder. After this 3 years sleep, his status is still being medical school student. He asks for the knowledge examinations, get approved, then pass all papers with in one day with 90+% score. Not making any news at all.

Score should be 4.0/5.0 by then. BUT...

The last 20 ending chapters are absolute BAD. : (He develops TWENTY-mach speed, perfect stealth aircraft in one year, tests it in the public. It just makes the headline 'news'. Nothing more. Huh!

[collapse]

After that, seem like the author had no idea what should be written next, so simply terminating it.
Deserve 0.1/5.0 max.

That's why the score for the whole strory is averaged to 2.0/5.0

Raw reading via google is not bad. The chinese words/idioms used in this novel is not overt complex or have deep meaning. A bonus : the story is not superfluous loooooong garbage like those generic xianxias too. <<less

Unlike other CN novels where the a mu*derous MC fights other mu*derous people on a daily basis, this MC is lovable and innocent child, currently living an extremely chill childhood. This is a very lighthearted and slow moving story with bits of comedy here and there, very likeable MC, and very detailed side characters, immersive and altogether just a fun read.

Nice slice of life cultivator novel in a modern farming setting. Relaxing and extremely interesting read of a young child discovering the Dao and Qi without actually understanding how special he is and still acting like a real child, though with a little badassery.

Also Finally a Xianxia villain that isn't on the lower spectrum of IQ

It's really simple actually, a Daoist doing mundane things in a village. The story is really good, the MC is very likable, the romance is awesome. The only complaint of mine about this novel is the release schedule, but hey, translators are humans too. But if someone who can do it quicker, it'll be awesome

Enjoying the story a lot so far. MC is fun to read about and expresses emotions like a normal child would even though he is more 'mature' than other children in the novel. And I'm really enjoying the cultivation aspect of the book even though there's no structured way of knowing what his level is

Awesome work by TL and editors! The author has done a fine job with the plot lines and major scoops.

The over all flow is unbroken so far. Writing 5/5

Character development looked strange at the beginning compared to other contemporary works. But it is so far with due reason (as of chapter 22) and fits amazingly with the wits and antiques of a young child. 5/5

About the supernatural and modern mixing of the world; smooth. Since the story is in a narrative form. It is pleasant to the eyes and many aspects... more>> of present day scenarios have been captured. 5/5

For all those who love a well built good paced book: a must read! <<less

You could say that this is an anticlimax for generic xianxia tr*sh you found on the side of road.

The story is about a boy who is self-taught on cultivation.

It is the adventures of his life. Mostly about mundane things that should be boring but somehow, I found it pleasant and calming to read. This is such an amazing story! And it is very cute too! Loved it so far. I happen to like slow paced stories that take the time introduce the characters in depth and make the readers care.

If you liked Legend of this cultivation God, chances are you will like this. Vice versa.

Kudos to the the translators/editors have done a great job (and seem to be having a blast). Lot of cultural references have been pointed out (for the nerdy). Despite their best efforts, it make one wonder how much is lost in translation.

A cultivation story set in modern day where nobody knows about cultivators. The MC hasn't had any cultivation explained to him and just tests things out himself. He's had encounters with cultivators but he hasn't really spoken to them and only fought once or twice. I'm interested in seeing where the story goes.
