Everyone in a high school is suddenly transported to another world. As they are attacked by monsters they find that some of the students now have superpowers. They organize themselves into two groups. Those without powers are called the Stay Home Group and those with them are called the Exploration Group. On a day where most of the Exploration Group is out, the remaining ones that stay behind start the slaughtering and raping of the Stay Home Group.

Here we meet our protagonist, an average guy with no abilities who had just barely escaped death at the hands of his schoolmates. He ends up far away in a cave on the verge of death, exhausted and wounded when a slime enters the cave and starts eating away at his hand. All he can do is utter, “…please… someone out there… help me….”

Review as of V2c8.

A school of students and its staff were transported into a fantasy world and immediately enters a classic Lord of the Flies scenario. A caste was quickly established, those with fantasy cheat powers and those who don’t. Of course, things quickly went south, because humans.

The author is trying to build a dark story, a world where strength is needed to survive constant dangers from monsters and from the base nature of humans. Very quickly the grim scenario is given to us: powered students turning against the unpowered,... more>> resulting in destruction of the fragile community that was still trying to learn about its predicament. Did the two paragraphs above sound interesting? If so, you will be disappointed to know that all of the above are told after the fact, we don't get to read about the actual event itself. Our MC is someone who is purportedly unpowered and thus was a victim of the infighting. When the story opens, he was alone and injured. Traumatized, he bore a grudge against his fellow students and discovered that he actually had the power to tame the monsters of the new world.

As he starts to trek across this new world, he slowly finds a scattered schoolmate or two and discovering a few more monsters to bond with. His view of humans forever tainted by the traumatic incident, he would rather believe the monsters who follow him loyally.

One only needs to look at the harem tag to immediately guess that the monsters he recruited are either female or possess female attributes. It immediately brings comparisons to Arifureta, the difference in that the MC of Monster no Goshujin-sama is still weak. So weak that the entirety of the translations thus far is about how he gets into life-threatening situations and the resulting crisis that forces his monsters to rescue him.

The author tries to inject emotions and the general thought process of a person who is still troubled by his new, grim outlook, and wants us to care about the monsters that he had bonded with. Time and again we are told that the monsters share his distrust of humans due to their shared links, that the monsters wish they could do more to help him, that he should rely on them more. Their loyalty borders on blind love, that they would gladly sacrifice themselves to save him. Most of all they want to be with him and receive his attention, to the extent that newcomers into their circle are viewed with intense suspicion and distrust.

It is actually nicely written and structured simply but effectively. The translations are well done, but slow. Most of the character buildup and dialogue is about the monsters themselves.

A dark series about a monster-tamer can be interesting, however one might get turned off by the harem. Don’t worry it’s not like Re:Monster. Yet. <<less

I am sorry but the Author fails in writing a good constructive story. I understand the MC distrust on people and has grown cautious. I applauded the MC at those times before but it's gone beyond the point where he is paranoid and traumatize. He can't trust anyone unless they submit to him like s*ave or subordinate. A character can't be on equal terms with this guy. The Heroine herself is just as bad. Don't let the Cover deceive you. ... more>>
Spoiler

Monster Girl, cool right? Normally I dont hate this sorta thing but she's desperately trying to appear like a Human Girl to appeal to the MC. In reality this Character knows nothing and is only using the Information and Body that was given to her. In the end she's just a Monster. And when you point this out she gets emotional or even angry. I hate that she convinces herself to be so. Author could make a better use of this idea of a Slime Girl. But fails to do so

[collapse]

There's just too many loopholes in the story. Even Arifureta was better then this. I could point out what flaws it has in, Romance, Characters, Ect. But I'm done. I don't feel its worth my time. If I had to say the best character in the Series is Kato. But even she becomes lavished to the MC and then no longer feels like a real Character.

Sigh... such a disappointed. So yeah don't waste your time. <<less

It looks good in the beginning with MC having trust issues and monster girls, but I am just tired of MC being so weak and useless. Every battle he is utterly useless, freezes or gets hurt and its up to his girls to save him. He can't seem to relieve girls off their worries, he can't even show his affections towards them. Really, I just got tired of the same thing happening again and again, and just how useless MC can be. The premise is good enough, the author totally... more>> ruins the plot with this MC though. <<less

I really like this story and hope another TL picks it up. I certainly can't agree with people who gave it less than 3 stars.

It has a plot (which at the time of this written they had just started progressing in the truest sense).

No of the characters a card board cutouts, and they show growth in their characters.

... more>> Those two things alone make it at least three stars, the rest of the stars are just up to personal taste.

PS: The MC doesn't hate humans, he's just having trouble trusting them, even when he wants to.

PSS: Another reviewer said "He can't trust anyone unless they submit to him like s*ave or subordinate." This statement is factually correct (not the s*ave part though), but so wrong in the tone it sets. The MC can trust his "tamed" monsters because they are not human, and
Spoiler

he has a magical bond with than that lets him know what they are feeling, and them know what he's feeling. Also they are clearly not s*aves because one of them almost kills him because she didn't have enough knowledge/self control to fight her instincts. He's just lucky that the monsters feel affection for him because he gave them a sense of self and are predisposed to liking him like a child is to their mother.

I think the 'smart male lead' tag should be removed. He doesn't strike me as smart, the girls around him points out everything for him. He just does A LOT of introspection after the fact that the girls explained everything to him. So far, there is a lot of character development, but some seems kind of forced. For example, character A points out a flaw in character B, character B, oh I will try and fix that. Minimal fighting, lots of introspecting and repeating the importance of the family of... more>> monster. <<less

the story doesn’t go anywhere and, while I liked the main cast, the main character has a bit of trust issue (or issues in general lol). I don’t really recommand this.

The distrust and suspicion the MC feels towards other humans is to some extend understandable, but it also seems unreasonably blown out of proportion. He should have heard stories about stuff like this happening in real life, where people in desperate situations turn on each other, it's nothing new. On the other hand there should be some examples of the opposite, which there are, from the human girl traveling with him, but in the end it just ends up as him whining about it over and over.
Being wary, cautious... more>> and cunning doesn't mean you have to talk about your feelings all the time, not that he does, he just thinks it, which makes him seem like a bit*h on the inside that just pretends in front of the girls while he doesn't notice their feelings at all, he's a typical useless MC.

Spoilers:
The harem part seems to be progressing nicely, I do like the arachne, the puppet one and lily, but I was expecting him to after having the first 2, begin to find some on the level of the arachne while the other 2 evolved, the rest so far seem weak and irrelevant.

For now there isn't any overall plot other than gathering harem members and I'm afraid that as soon as that is accomplished the story will simply fall apart, I believe it would have been better to focus more on the special monsters he picks up and the process of obtaining them, making their personalities more interesting and the process longer and reflecting the difference between them, like with the arachne, instead it just turns into chapters with nothing but whining. <<less

I'm hoping for faster release as the machine TL are barely readable, and wished more people would be able to appreciate this novel.

This novel is not for:

People who crave battle scenes.

... more>> People who wish for OP MC or party member, cheat skill, super smart MC (Except they are not, as in many niche novels), etc. People that wished for those common niche stuff, should stay away from this novel.

People who expect anti-hero, Hero, revenge themed, dark themed, etc. It is very clear from CH.1 that this novel was not meant to be such novel by the author. Those settings were meant to be a push for the MC to choose monster-family pathway.

People who seek fast-paced novel. This novel can be slow, for example, the relationship with the arachne only significantly evolved much later, despite her being introduced early in the novels. However, it's a reasonable pace, not rushed, not awkwardly slow.
=============

It was enjoyable read so far (V4), protag grows, characters are well laid out, some but not so-niche storyline, okay~good plot.

The growing monster members bothers me a bit but it was hinted from the start that the author aimed for it (Look at title), I'm worried about the author ability to keep up with the increasing cast while maintaining the same quality, but as a reader I have to trust at the author for now.

The Novel title explains a lot about the content, it's about a human which become Master of Monsters, his monsters, struggles, worries, and his future.

This novel deserve at least 3*, the rest of the stars will likely more of personal preferences. <<less

Problem is the start. Its as description says. Problem is why? To take over? They just went on a killing spree, time is not taken to show why the decided to do this.

MC complains that humans suck all the time even though he being as powerless as the others would have also ran away to save themselves; easy to talk tough after getting cheat powers.

This is the problem with revenge/OP characters & plot lines. Its all they are, the point of them is not to make sense and turn our... more>> brains off. <<less

This novel is incredible, I was looking for something to read because I was tired of protagonists dense or pe*verted cliches and stories without plot or supporting characters / paper harem.

And here I am when I find this diamond still raw but being cut down gradually, if you DO NOT want to find the above things you said you certainly will not find here, you will have romance, a solid harem with incredible characters (There is a clear reason why they like the MC and not that ridiculous story of... more>> "Oh I'm going to pat him or save her and raise a flag and i", which is so saturated in Isekai) that helped the MC throughout the story, well defined plot, not dense protagonist and attentive to those who are important to him, although weak our MC is smart tries to improve himself always physically and mentally, his inner struggle is something! Who never thought "this humanity is rubbish..."

Anyway, for me it was everything I was looking for, try to give this novel a try and draw your own conclusions.

ps. sorry for my bad English since it's not my native language. <<less

Fun series. I really like the whole "Broken Protagonist" genre, where the protagonist goes through some sort of hell and is mentally and emotionally scarred from the experience, becoming essentially a different person. I would have liked it better if the series went more in-depth with our MC before the fall, just to have that before/after comparison, but it's fine the way it is with the author just reminding us every chapter that this dude can't trust human people anymore because they don't have a magical mind-link with him... Seriously,... more>> the author does show the MC's distrust with his actions somewhat, but I guess he wasn't sure the point would get across if he didn't put it explicitly in writing. Repeatedly. Throughout the course of the series. Still, the plot moves forward at a decent pace, and at the very least the protagonist recognises his flaws, even if he has trouble fixing them... Hey, who wants to bet his human companion gets killed and turned into an undead or through some other method gets turned into a Monster and becomes his subordinate? I'd say chances are at somewhere around 10% of that happening and to those of you who read the raws DON'T SPOIL IT! I want to be disappointed on my own without your help, you beautiful bilingual people. <<less

Another Isekai theme story. Yet not cliche.

The protag experienced misfortune and betrayal, yet it didn't made him into a psycho.

And a harem that not full of cliche female human and demi human or heteromorph, but full of female true monster. It's really original.

And the protag is not OP. His character development is also felt very natural and so human-like, so do his female monster harem.

Too bad the released chapter is still very few. I hope this story released more often..

5 / 5. Amazing. It's not perfect though but just the story hooks you right away.

    • If you're here for flashy action scenes, you won't get those here.
    • If you're here for awesome OP MC and party members, you won't get those here. In fact those are too much clich nowadays so why ask for another wish-fulfillment?
Particularly the MC is my cup of tea. I always got my brain shot when other MCs are so trusting but here the MC is on a different level. He has PTSD on humans and that's what amazing, he's neither a hero nor anti-hero, he just have a big sense of doubt on humans since humanity itself is.... you know... :D. The MCs and his party's character developments goes side-to-side as the story goes on. Yes, they're not sub nor flat characters. All of them have weakness and flaws on which they complement each other that makes the 'monster family' a real family.

Also the MC is not a s*upidly OP edgy teen protag. that you can find anywhere nor his party members aren't OP either. This makes a good hook because they are in a survival and tribulations in another world that makes the story credible. The vagueness of the MC's power or "cheat" as he calls is also a nice take. While he is a 'Monster Tamer' not all monsters are tamable. Some are even hostile which makes the MCs power even subverted and really weak in physical combat.

-At the time of this writing: V2C15

I hope it gets picked-up by some translators. It's a good ride :D

Spoiler Alert

Spoiler

Since nobody did picked-up this series, I powered-thru few chapters. And just like I said the MC is neither a hero or evil lord. Interesting developments such as another transference having the same cheat as out MC, tho different because it's "obedience/subservient" not "companionship/loyalty". Learning more world-building and the MCs character development, like his trust issues and human relationships.

Well, up to the point where it is translated, the story has been to my liking, I find that each character has its unique depth and that they are not simply background characters. The plot is interesting so far, and the story so far has a good character development. Sadly it has been dropped by the current TL, so I hope someone picks it up, because I was hooked on it. It could have a little more romance maybe, but maybe that happens in future releases.

I think the story is pretty great at what its aiming at. It target people who wants to immerse themselve in a reality with soothing "family members" aka. Monsters who act loyal and kind toward a person who have trust issues because of a trauma at the start of the novel. That some people dont like the MC but only likes the concept of his "power" just means this light novel wasnt for them, because the story is not about a MC who got an awesome power and got OP... more>> OP, but more about the emotional aspect. <<less

Don't misunderstand; the main character's ability is OP, among the most OP in fact.

It just doesn't increase his own capabilities directly. The only limit on how powerful it is, is how powerful a monster he can meet. Also his own desire to not improve in his strong point (the OP skill), but chase after his classmates by improving the abilities he has less talent in. I won't say it's wrong for a tamer to practice martial arts and magic. I will say it's wrong to spend so little time improving... more>> his taming skills. The fact that his tamed monsters can grow as well also means that the earlier he makes new friends, the better.

Spoiler

So this guy only goes out of his way to look for monsters he can tame after meeting the first one. After the second one, he gives up on looking for monsters to tame and just takes them as they come. Not saying he should go "gotta catch 'em all", but he could have at least thought about what kind of monsters would be useful and changed hunting grounds often to expand the search area and increase the chance of a new encounter. He could also explore his connection with his current monsters more and see if he can strengthen it or use it in various ways as practice. There are many things he could try.

[collapse]

The main issue I had with the story is that the main character basically just goes with the flow while grinding out exp and training, only really changing from his habits in response to the requests of others. Even without a status screen, as soon as he learns what his ability is he just switches from "gotta survive" to "gotta grind exp and skill levels!" and the dichotomy between his thought process (gloomy, paranoid, overly cautious) and his actions as a result (casual, happy-go-lucky, careless) is just laughable. <<less

As of Vol.3 Chapter 30 posted here. You are better off going on Bookwalker and re-read from the light novel that is currently being released. As of now, 5 volumes are released with Volume 6 planned for October 2021.

The web novel here is basically about an entire school being mass teleported to another world. The side characters are the ones who have overpowered abilities, while the protagonist obtains an ability on the weaker end of the spectrum. Because of his ability, he can obtain allies to protect himself and others.... more>> It has been a good read so far, with the protagonist's heavy distrust of humanity more than monsters, and how each of his members (harem) of his party is also improving relationships with each other without the protagonist having to lead every conversation. <<less

It is enjoyable so far.

There are of course some things that are bugging me but most of them are not worth mentioning right now. I will say this though, the use of deus ex machina in several situations is annoying. It is just lazy writing.

It was recently licensed by J-Novel Club. Though the number of chapters translated is not that much, I definitely recommend the official translation. Once again you see how translation quality can make or break the story.

I will update this review once I have read further.

I read the 1st 8 chaps and I have to stop and complain. MC should have really considered monologue school back in his world. Damn his muttering, damn his philosophy and damn that edgy try hard attitude. It cringed so hard I felt embarrassed for the guy. If that was intentional to be MC lowest then the author sure have me fooled for sux ass writing. (Shouldn't be a tls problem, good readability, though confusing where it's cringey)

Edit: I take back what I said. Tls messed up something down... more>> to earth like thank you for your hard work.

Enjoyable read, good drama and nice character development. Just treat the 1st half as a blur, translators got used to it by then and improved a lot. 5/5. IDK how to change the previous rating though. <<less
