The requirement for suspension of disbelief is too much. Story is okay and the world around MC feels alive, but the 'transcender' - part and cultivation system are pretty poorly handled. If you're a veteran reader of transcender novels and looking for a new piece to read, I'd say skip this one. If you're new to webnovels and/or haven't read many of the "reincarnated into a different world" - types of novels, I'd say give it a shot. The story is pretty is engaging and you probably won't mind certain... more>> things that killed the novel for me.

With that said, take my words with a grain of salt. I only read up to C39. <<less

A very fine novel with domineering and thick skinned MC. There has been less fighting than one might imagine at first, but I find this refreshing and entertaining series. Only problem I have is that sometimes the fighting experts have waaaay too much pride. Like ridiculously much pride. "What you dare to NOT address me as God almighty, the greatest man under heaven!? I will kill you!"

Sometimes the story also progresses somewhat slowly so when caught up with the translation without possibility to binge read it gets annoying. I caught... more>> up around c210 and then I kinda forgot about this series for a while sinse I didn't feel like reading 1-2 chapters at a time. Now catching up and enjoyed 60 chapters in one day and still some more to go! Binge is the way to go with this one imo

Still 4/5 for entertainment and interesting characters <<less

Good novel.
Spoiler

The story is very consistent, the characters are well made, and likeable, I for one love the MC and the heroine.

The romance have a good development, and most of the novel has a good balance between romance, comedy and action.

If I may add a flaw is the same of most CN: the author seems to want get more attention and money, and by the final quarter the story kinda of get dragged, too much recolections, too much explanations of stuff that just happened, filler chapters... and then, when most readers are full of those, he speedly end the novel.

From the 1200+ chapters, if the author could keep the same pace, in 900 chapters he would've finished it.

But nothing that a speedy read can't solve. Just binge read through these chapter till the important parts.

ps: won't comment in the TL, because from chapter 311 forward I read MTL....

This MC should belong on the Hall of Fame for OP MCs.

Eh, that's an exaggeration, but it's probably going to be true. He's good at a variety of things, but since he doesn't specialize in most things, he's not unbeatable. Of course, as top assassin, he can rival the new world's top assassin.

MC's cheats are fun to read. MC's also decently fun to read about. He's not actually s*upid, bless. He's kinda funny too.

The interactions with females are kinda pe*verted occasionally (not too bad, but still...), but the girls aren't... more>> entirely annoying. Pissed me off once though.

Spoiler

I get that it's for plot, but they wouldn't stay in the city and wanted to go check out the war zone. How annoying. They're capable, but not that capable so technically it could've been a burden (heck it might still be).

[collapse]

MC's mother's family is pretty cool. Bit angsty.

MC doesn't really have any equals around his age. They just kinda eventually became followers... at least they're still interesting.

If you want an OP MC who helps out his family/friends and slaps faces while not being dumb, read this!

The story isn't too dark even though people die in it. <<less

Gotta say I like this one. It's not like a lot of other ones I've read where the author states at every fight how awesome the MC is and why he's so much stronger than others at his level. When the MC has a break through in his strength the author only goes into once or twice and then gets on with the story (the only thing I noticed is repeated a lot is that in the MCs previous life he was the world #1 assassin) and I really like... more>> that. To many of these stories waste to much time retelling all the advantages the MC has and it gets redundant and annoying (Find myself skipping those bits a lot of the time). Usually I won't start a new series unless it's 300+ chapters translated and is already completed in it's original language, but had someone referred this to me. There's funny bits and serious bits and a decent plot line going with sub plots that don't just jump the story in a completely different way. I started reading a different story before this then it just jumped in a different direction and made about half the characters that the author spent 100+ chapters to make relevant completely irrelevant and it just kind of jumped from one thing to another without any real direction and I just couldn't get back into it. <<less

One of the top novels I've read; OEM starts off in an interesting albeit typical xuanhuan starting. Jun Xie's backstory gives a unique niche to this novel. Humor is also a nice addition. However, the cultivation is rather slow and I'm confused by the art he cultivates with.
Spoiler

The pagoda art he cultivates in doesn't help his Xuan Qi thing for some reason? (Or maybe I'm misunderstanding something?)

[collapse]
But overall, it's a good novel and I plan on reading it until its end.

Never realize that I haven't vote on this amazing series, as the author other works, he shine on making a MC with harmless looking in the outside, but sinister and full of trick in the inside. Totally love the author's style.

A great story that most people would enjoy and likely make you laugh for a long time. But there are traces of racism here and there. Also, the ending is... shall we say, abrupt? Yes, it’s VERY abrupt. All in all, a wonderful journey, but the destination leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If you can overlook these problems, then I highly recommend this one!

As of chapter 91: So far, its great. There is a harem, but its forgivable, and isn't unruly, like other xian xia series, so far. (The worst harem I have ever read is Peerless Martial God and Martial Arts God Asura, in that they are just utterly terrible.)

So he's a transmigrated assassin. He uses his mind more than his skill in this series. It's not a OP character blood bath so far, as the character acts more like a trickster hero in the beginning than a mu*dering hero. He... more>> does have a unique cheat skill though, so if you don't like that its fine. But the unique cheat skill only serves a purpose for him to use his "assassin skills" in a xian xia universe.

It also has decent humor. Yeah, sure, xian xia usually doesn't have good humor (at least to western audiences. I don't know if chinese people find it hilarious), but the humor in this one is good enough.

And he is great at trolling. Characters that can defeat others through trolling and trickery are more entertaining than those that win through slaughter. <<less

Review as Ch.91.

I already had a high opinion of this piece early on and I enjoyed his other works, but I held off for a long time because there was a controversy when a translator decided to drop it due to what he perceived as racial tones in the novel. I changed my mind as I think I should be presenting an opinion about how it is right now and not how it will be.

OEM is a transmigration story: a modern day assassin who ended up in the body of... more>> a wastrel in a fantasy-like ancient China setting. Unlike most stories where the transmigration/reincarnation plot is abandoned after giving the MC new powers, the MC Jun Xie actually uses the skills and experiences of his previous life in addition to the cultivation and martial arts of the new one. Using his modern earth skill set he convinces his family that he has changed for the better and even take charge of the household’s guards, to transform them into elites.

This and mentions about using his assassination methods and knowledge acknowledges the previous life, reminding us that yes, the guy used to be an assassin and not just some random info the author threw at us. These throwbacks alone makes this novel different than other stories. Too many stories merely use the rebirth/transported angle as an excuse to give their MCs ridiculous maturity right off the bat.

There isn’t truly a dull moment, even the cultivation scenes when written by Fenglin Tianxia moves along quickly and doesn’t dwell too long on them. Like his other work “Transcending the Nine Realms”, the author’s prose flows smoothly and descriptively, the characters very animated and the dialogue can be rapid-fire.

There are many plot threads being spun in the current translations: assassination plots, theft, political rivalry, fixed gambling, a bloody purge, a mystery about the crippling of the MC’s uncle, possible interests from the introduced female characters... It can be quite exciting. The MC haven’t truly revealed his new found powers yet, instead still lurking in the shadows and making counter ploys of his own.

Will be following this. <<less

Mere words possibly cannot describe how much I like this novel.
* but ill use them anyways because im a hypocrite, lol *
A very nice change of pace from those 'beat em up' types where the MC gets op real fast.
Interesting characters, tough it might be a bit slow paced for some but in my opinion it isnt too slow, rather I feel this is better than to go too fast and not let the characters develop
5 of 5, Definitely

A great novel for those who appreciate the depth of a character and plot, and lot of humor. For those who love face paced stories might find it not entertaining tho...

I hope some translation team pick this one up T_T

Very nice plot, though I get a feeling that the story is focusing too much on other characters & other situations rather than the MC’s situation... Too many explanations too.

Overall, the MC is pretty ideal for me! I can’t wait to see him get stronger.

What stands out to me for this xianxia is how it’s more driven by characters rather than just random clans showing up to get themselves all killed. The author essentially drops his main character into an already unstable world and have everyone else react to this new factor. Around half of the novel itself is in the view of other characters and all the schemes and plots happening throughout the setting. There’s a ton of foreshadowing and hints throughout the beginning that makes you go oh sh*t when it’s revealed... more>> later on.

The story is quite slow I recommend reading in groups of 3-5 chapters. <<less

I would rate this 5/5 if it was more fast paced than this.. Only 3/5 for now. @ Chapter 65. The author really likes to repeat things we already know over and over again.. And the coincidences happen really far too often, and how weird it felt when the author spend 2 chapter to justify himself.

On chapter 34. Story has potential but author is killing it. Super short chapters, a lot of diolague, kinda boring, author repeats things over and over just changing the words yet same meaning. A conversation can span to up to 5 chapters which is ridiculous so early on. Feels like the author drags things on already cause he ran out of ideas about what to do in the story or added fillers already at the beginning of the novel.

I registered an account on novel updates just to write this review. As of chapter 59, this novel has been the best read I’ve had on rebirth/transport xianxia/martial arts genre. The reason is that the MC is very like-able. I really like how the mc’s personality changes after his rebirth. Like how he used to be cold, passionate and straight forward and deadly in his previous life. After rebirth he turns into someone who is still cold and passionate but calculating and lustful (lol) at the same time. I like... more>> to think that it is due to him taking over the body of a debauchee (this novel taught me this word lol).

Long Live Fatty! Long Live Debauchee!

There is a great novel... I really like how story has been written because it is very interesting and you never find it boring... and happy to see a MC who is not a hot blooded and kind of a person who thinks before he kills people because he knows that might bring a calamity upon him.

But this is not a story for the people those who want all enemies clan to be killed (slaughtered) or have instant bullsh*t powerups or exist beautiful females only to fall in love with... more>> MC <<less

Little brother of "A step into the past", though latter is a wuxia, xianxia in this one is barely noticable as it focuses on political scheming and assasinations, not on shonen fights and power ups.

(51chaps for now so don't know if it will change much)
