When A Mage Revolts

Description

Kubei was just an ordinary pencil and button pusher working a day job, hating his boss and making horrible speeches when one day he fell asleep after pushing an all-nighter. When he woke up, he was bound to a chair, facing three creepy robed women and in a body way too young and way too weak to be his own. As he slowly came to, he realized that he was no longer in the same universe as he was before. He had teleported to the Kingdom of Helius, where an all-powerful church rules its lands and wages war against the elusive group known only as Mages. Armed with an incredibly c*cky neural interface that just won’t shut up and his own sheer wit, our main character will find himself not just fighting to survive, but maybe even for something bigger than himself.

A brilliant premise ruined with lazy, satirical elements. Imagine a wonderfully constructed world, now imagine that the splendour this world possesses (which is eerily similar to two other stories that shant be named) is butchered in an attempt for the story to appeal to all audiences, rather than appealing to specific groups. The end product that is left is such an awful generalisation, that contrasts with the originals simply cannot but help be made. If you are curious as to these generalisations, go ahead and read, but be forewarned, for... more>> such idiocy can leave one with a blaring headache.

For those whom require specifics. Firstly, the entire premise is incredibly cliche, and common. The protagonist lost, and aimless, somehow begins to traverse the path of heroism, and Justice. Secondly, the plot advancement tools, such as the AI tool, serve as satirical devices to humanise the story further. For so called 'witty banter' to take place. Thirdly, there's Just no real character to the story, it Just feels like a story any one of millions of authors with fascination with the West would write. All in thinly veiled cover in order to imitate the success of its predecessors. In the end why not Just read the original inspirations instead?

This is the best chinese MAGE novel that I have read. The novel has excellent writing, plotting, and great humor. It makes fun of other wizard novels and novels where the protagonist has OP cheats in an entertaining way. It is better than The Wizard World, and much, much better than Warlock of the Magus World.

Details:

Spoiler

Strengths:

Writing and plotting is excellent. There are plots within plots, and even the MC doesn't know all of them. It is at least 10 times better than other two mage novels I mentioned above. There is plenty of intrigue and clever people, this keeps things interesting.

The cheat that the MC has is hilarious - a talking computer inside his brain which only likes to tr*sh talk the MC. MC isn't a selfish ret**d like TWW or WMW. He cares about his family.

Weakness:

In the end, it is still only a power fantasy. No character development, no romance.

[collapse]

Recommendation: If you like Wizard novels, then certainly read this one. Note: This novel is a parody of other novels, but with much better writing and superior plotting.

Other recommendations: Ze Tian Ji, Deathsutra, AWE. <<less

A disclaimer. While I have given the novel a 3 star rating. It is better then most novels. But it is still mediocre, and I don´t correct rating, based on the fact, that the other are bad in comparison. It is actually already corrected for the medium of webnovel.

What you should know before you decide to read it:

  1. The novel starts weak, incredibly weak. Some reviews say it gets better after 50 chapter. While that is true, it gets better, it is still quite bad. The novel gets trully better after chapter 150. Why you ask? Writing doesn´t get better, the comedy actually develops, gets rarer, and is of showing instead of telling kind, situational (?), quite hard to describe actually. Why gets answered by my second point.
  2. The protagonist. While he is pretty plain in the beginning, he develops a little. I don´t if it was intentional at all, it is that subtil. To say he is threedimensional is not true, there are points he lacks for that, but it would be wrong to say he stays plain and boring.
That leads to my first point on - why you should read it:

  1. The character, the plot, antagonists are close to realistic. They are by far not characters you meet if you read Dostojewsk or other giants of russian literature (far from Tchechow), but enough for me. They are not necessary in a "fun" WN. The MC is a guy, he is not trully s*upid, nor is he smart. He gets into this situation. At first the decisions are made for him, later he can actually make own decisions. He actually decides on the path he takes! There are alternatives, he could do other things, he acts the way he acts because he can, he wants and sometimes he needs to, sometimes because he doesn´t think of other ways. I actually read many WNs and LNs, many of them quite popular and/or acclaimed, but they lacked it, "true" decisions. You must also have in mind a biased point of view, we are presented, it is relevant because some acts of torture seem logical in MCs point of view, but clearly could have been avoided, under the cost of more work from protagonist. You will see other ways, if you see past the bias.
  2. The world is a world, which I believe could work. We actually did not see much. The System is OP and useless (Bias from the MC?) at the same time. The MC is the strongest and the weakest, because of his innate abilities and powers. He actually uses his powers and smarts to outplay his enemies.
So what does the novel lacks:

  • Romance - I do not mind, it is actually logical for him not to have a romantic interest as of now, I would have considered it weak, if there was a owerpowered beautiful maiden from somewhere, which functions as a symbiosis between trophee and troublemaker/bringer for our protagonist. There are some powerfull women in the novel. And they are quit successfull in their own right.
  • Good writing. Lets be honest. The novel is based on dialogs and the discriptions are lacking. It uses easyly understandable language, which is not beautiful. It is ok if you read it 2 chapters a day, but 400 chapters can be quite boring. (Pss. Skimming can help, propably)
  • "Fantasy" - Realismus is nice, but you propably decided to read WN propably because you want to see something different. While the world is magical, it is not fantastical. Some may consider this to be bad.
Thank you for your attention. I hope to have helped you.

I was actually quite surprised by this novel, I was expecting a badly written Chinese novel. What I got was a very funny and well written story about a guy whose luck is like a roller coaster. Every time he finally gets to rest some trouble is brewing ready to strike.

If you want a typical story where an all powerful Chinese is eating pills, pondering daos, or seeking revenge for his face or family. This isn't that story.

This guy is a random Chinese office worker, who is randomly put in... more>> a noble's body in a kidnapping and torture situation, by mages.

Has to use what details and advantages he can gather to barely survive (did I mention he doesn't have any of that noble's memories?), only to find himself in a worse situation. He is the hated son of a noble family, and the church would have him killed if they find out anything that happened while he was kidnapped.

All while he has a half useless AI in his head, who starts gaining a personality. So while this guy is almost dying, he and the AI are having hilarious conversations in his head. <<less

I am only writing this review to clap back at some of the ridiculous expectations people have for these novels. I consider most of these to be random stories that are slightly better than fan fiction. I come for the creativity not for the great literary devices. This is especially true for web novels to me, because they all seem somewhat cliche and biting off each other. With that said let's get to the clapping.

I always read reviews before I check out a novel one of the main things people... more>> did not like was the useless system and that it wasn't funny but he kept being mentioned and the dialogue between them and yatta yatta. Well first off all

the system becomes way quieter after michelle dies and some time even before that

, hence why they believed in witches, hence why the church in this novel can fool so many people so easily.

The whole theme is you bring someone regular from our generation put them in the middle ages and they become the smartest frickin person ever to have lived during that time! Not to mention add real magic to it and boom you got yourself a nice fantasy c*cktail of a regular guy who transmigrated and is suddenly a genius! Which is what almost every other webnovel will do so suck it up hon.

I am just saying you guys should give this book some more credit than 1 star because #1 it actually did have some laughs so don't say it wasn't funny at all it made me smile every now and then, this isn't stand up I am not expecting to laugh at every page or gag. #2 this novel actually played on something different not only is the character transmigrated and not considered a genius but he also displays his s*upidity like any other NORMAL guy by trying to be super amazing if you found out you could possible use magic wouldn't you be excited to see something like that? Even if it was dangerous you already died once how bad could it be to take that risk? #3 the psychology aspect could easily be missed. I say if the author does not directly tell you something, you should imply it from the characters actions. I do not think the previous reader was a very imaginative fellow because if he was he would have seen that almost every step of the way MC would always panic first when trouble came and then think things through after panicing. He had an acute paranoia [for good reason though] which ended up making him get caught at some point so I would say his mental state isn't well? Not to mention
Spoiler

I think he did die at least twice during those first couple chapter in captivity cause he had that "dream" which never shows up again by the way after his stint with michelle

The story is enjoyable with well built characters.

I find the AI system to be unique... Definitely better than WMW's AI (not the story itself. It hasn't been translated that far ahead yet).

The speech is not repetitive instead is pretty interesting. The start is a popular template screwd in a weird way but that's not a bad thing. The story has plenty of growth potential if done in the right way.

Qidian started it but I haven't experienced ads in the story yet so its still good. I just hope they don't... more>> stop translating due to some unreasonable reason. <<less

Artificial intelligence here seems more like the friend of MC here than an emotionless tool. Currently MC is weak and does not possess a godlike intelligence. The premise of the novel is interesting and the story is realistic. The story has a great potential for development if MC shows steady character growth. The worldbuilding is lacking as it is still early in the story. Although currently MC is being pushed around, I think it will all change as he grows stronger.

Anyways, a good novel to read and enjoy.

Pretty good IMO. The novel is single-minded in its depiction of a mage fantasy ignoring all other development. I don't know for sure where the others complain about, but it is a refreshing work. The quality of the translation is a minus though.

This is a hidden gem.. For those who give low vote, I believe it was because they cant accept the comedy inside mystery genre. Too much affected with magus and other mage novel, they expect a serious story. But here I am want to say, that this mage novel is more to my liking, and better than those magus thing.

First, the novel doesnt have romance yet (I hope there is later), and no harem (which is good). Without this 2 genre, the novel shine because of the mystery story it... more>> bring completely out of what reader would expect. It gives me the thrill of looking forward, and seek answer who and why.

The comedy is good in my opinion, although the fast changing scene is slightly confusing sometime. I really recommend you guys to read this until chapter 100, because most of mystery in the begining unfold by then and the new chapter of mystery begin.

Even after 300 chapter, the hype didnt slow down, and the story become more interesting. Our MC become more OP but his enemy is OP in its own way as well. Currently MC is building his own mercenary group into a new level. Happy to know that the chapters translated in godspeed. <<less

First off, note the parody tag in the tags. It is important. The main character basically lacks most of the knowledge otherworld travelers seem to have for no reason. He doesn't know how to make soap, gunpowder, he isn't somehow a gourmet and for the most part if an ordinary person wouldn't normally know something, he can be counted upon to not know it either.

His cheat isn't the best (though it saves his life from time to time, so not the worst either), and basically everything is over the top,... more>> most of the people are dumber, more cunning, more vicious, or more arrogant than you'd normally expect. In a ten point scale on personal and personality attributes in this world, it seems you'll never find a 5, but is more of an inverted bell curve. But as I said, note the parody in the tags. It is important.

Various readers hate the main character, I don't. He's genre savy, hard working, reasonably cunning, and only vicious in situations where his ability to continue living is at stake. In the start he was an everyman, neither successful nor a failure, going though his everyday life. He ends up in a situation where there is a better than 90% chance of dying and lives through it. He isn't always able to win, and when he can't, he uses his head. His head isn't the greatest tool, but he isn't dumb as some would claim. Given he has a somewhat high chance of dying about once every 3 chapters on average, he does pretty well. He does have the merit of a high ranking noble family, he also has the demerit of it. All in all, a normal person is dealt a crappy hand, but there are 2 or 3 cards, in their current configuration worthless, that might be able to turn into a good hand. He sees that and chases that small beacon of hope.

The writing in the beginning is a little lacking, but it improves a bit as time goes on. It is funny, abet in a dark way, and this guy is probably more realistic than the majority of protagonists. If I had any complaint is that he is rather lacking in the protagonist power in the beginning- it takes a while more he can make a decision that actually affects anything. At best, he manages to survive. Still, it is not a bad read. There are many things I feel that were better that I dropped before chapter 20. It's sort of fast food for the soul, not the warmest, certainly not the best, but the greasy, salty goodness is satisfying once in a while, all the same. <<less

This novel is horrendous. A disjointed attempt to merge comedy via a either poorly written or poorly translated AI system with a serious transmigration. What should be an interesting premise is wrecked by incredibly poor execution. As Qidan appears to be curating any review below 3 stars on their website, 1 star is given to counteract that BS.

Way better than I thought. I recommend it!

Pro

  • MC is a good guy trying to get by in a fantasy European like world, and there is character progression in the story. He's relatively bright too, which is good in a story where he isn't the strongest one around.
  • Side characters are all interesting, every one of them way more complex than the simple minded fools you see usually in Chinese WN.
  • Same for antagonists.
  • You feel like the world is not centered around the MC, each and every character having his life and little scheme.
  • Comedy is down in latter parts of the story, and that's for the better.
  • A few plot twists that really surprised me.
Con

  • The heavy comedy in the beginning was almost too much.
  • No romance (until now at least). I always feel like it balances a story when a good romance is introduced.

I don't like this story. The author did seem to pay attention to the characters besides the MC which is interesting but the rest he completely failed my expectations.

At least to me there was not a single character I could like or relate to. MC is annoying and most of his actions left a sour taste in my mouth. All the characters besides Michelle seem dumb, the MCdespite the danger of the church and knowing about the consequences of practicing magic is just too relaxed and laid-back for a normal... more>> guy who was transported in a new world without a decent cheat. Though he claims he doesn't have the hero halo to protect him he is still too reckless provoking situations. For a normal person being kidnapped and experiencing so many terrible things would make them frightened or traumatized, I think this novel lacks in the psychological factor.

  • The most upsetting thing to m is The fact there is no strong reason to justify the main character to be a mage. It was explained that it was because he was an otaku and it was always his dream, but I think even Otaku are normal people and for normal people who most of their lives don't witness war or don't know about violence witnessing oppression will cower facing this choice for the first time. Sure, he learned it for self-defense but in my perspective a normal person who is law-abbiding would avoid delving upon it even under the threat of a curse of the witch. Why he fights for? For survival? I would believe that if he wasn't so shitty on his decisions. To return home? That would be a believable reason. To save the mages? For f**** Pete's sake you were tortured by mages why would you develop a good will and save them? Do you have a stockholm syndrome? If it was for himself I would believe it.
One of the things that annoyed me is that even though its explained that it is a western fantasy setting, the characters act and speak like dumbasses. Nobleman and royalty distinguished themselves because of their manners and different ways of speaking so I at least expected that the so called "ladies" introduced would act like their social position entailed instead... It felt like the "ladies" were male characters crossdressing.

You could argue and say this has humor so it shouldn't be taken so seriously. However I can name many novels who can balance the humor, tension and development better than this one like "World of Cultivation", "Experimental log of the crazy Lich" and etc.

I don't know how I was able to endure reading till this point but I can no longer keep going. <<less

It is another chinese MC that refuse to back down.

Spoiler

One of his friends gets capture and instead of being reasonable with the people that capture him he keeps antagonize them. Heck if it wasn't for one of them special power he would have killed the people.

Ok this is what happens. The MC friends gets captures he put a curse on one of the people that capture his friend. They ask him to remove the curse and they would tell him where his friends is, what do the main character does instead. He wants the upper hand and attacks them. He cannot do an equal exchange. Now after attacking them, one of the people almost kills him because once again he starts the crap. What does he do? He pins her to a wall and there is no way for her to escape. Her partner ask nicely to let her go they would tell him where his friend is, Chinese MC kills her. This unwilling to work with people is enough to make me hate the MC and I like the story at the beginning.

It's an amazing novel, it deserves more stars than this..

There's no romance, which is actually a good thing because authors tend to use Romantic sub-plot and Harem to ruin the plot and extend the number of chapters rather than concentrate on the real plot... The women in these novels play absolutely no part in the story progression other than invite arrogant high class idiots who go after the MC's life to get the girl after which the MC kills them. You won't find such useless stuff in this novel..

It's different... more>> from other novels because the MC is suspicious of almost everyone as he should be in a world full of conspiracies... Most idiotic MC's tend to trust girls with skin as beautiful as polished Jade blah blah blah in almost every Chinese novel. But the MC here is a cautious one.

The pseudo-science and the system are all meant to be funny and you won't get s*upid explanations that would irritate you if you know science.

The only thing to complain is that the ending was too abrupt and there were many things that went unexplained... Even Amber Sword's ending was much much better... If I have compare, the ending is similar to World of Cultivation and Undefeated God of War.. <<less

This is an excellent mage novel with a supportive AI

Mage revolts > age of adepts > wizard world > WMW

Not much needs to be said about WMW as it was a terrible ripoff of wizard world, of which age of adepts created a superior version, but "mage revolts" creates a parody of the AI with much less OPness.

Its a classic weak to strong with the MC eventually becoming stronger to defeat his enemies. It has good pacing with plenty of action, and periods of buildup and rest. The magic is... more>> interesting, and the MCs strengths and limitations are interesting as well.

There is a decent mix of characters and intelligent enemies that the MC interacts with so it doesn't feel like a power grind.

Its quite good. I presume that it has such a low rating because it's by qidian who we all know and hate. I give it a 4.5, perhaps due to my expectations being very low and enjoying this novel quite a bit. <<less

First of all don't rate this gem of a novel after only reading the first 10 chapters. The beginning is not that good and hard to chew but it becomes quite amazing after the first 50 chapters!! The story moves forward, the plot is quite nice and not predictable. The MC develops over time and matures. The comedy is also nice. And yes, the annoying AI also improves.

I really love this novel. For one, I liked the mc's calmness and caution. When the novel began, the main character transmigrated but didn't have the privilege of getting memories of the previous owner of his body so he had to play it by ear. He even started in a pretty bad situation where he was kidnapped and the kidnapper wanted some answers but naturally he couldn't answer anything because he didn't receive any memories. He had to speak to the kidnapper in a way that would satisfy the kidnapper... more>> while picking up clues to understand his situation. Even though he is clearly intelligent, other people are also intelligent and powerful and the MC takes that into consideration.

I like how foreboding and threatening his rival, the church, comes across in this novel. Even now, that the main character is famous and quite powerful, his is still aware of the threat of the church and isn't afraid to run away when necessary. It has interesting characters and the main character. <<less
