Hail nuffians and lurkers,

Despite joining two years ago this is my very first review. And that's because to me this novel is one of the most shining gems among the coal heap that is asian web novels.

While it is not perfect, especially in regard to worldbuilding and character depth, it offers a concise, entertaining and exciting story line. The plot is not forced, the fights are detailed but short enough to not spoil your interest and there are lots of comedic scenes and interactions (I had a lot of... more>> giggles at least). Best of all no excessive infodumps, no real harem plot and no crappy deus ex machina moments. Some will beg to differ but if you read it to the end you may come to the understanding I gained: this story sets out with a definite ending which means that it's not plot armour but heroic fate guiding our protagonist. In this it resembles old hero/warrior tales like Conan or Beowulf which I quite enjoy. Last but not least this novel actually contains ideological and philosophical questions and believes and I'm not talking about the usual dog eats dog/might makes right bullcrap. The MC is not rigtheous because he's strong but it's his rigtheousness which gives him strength. He aquires and follows his own beliefs, figths for them and in this slowly builds up his character.

Summing up: Though it resembles an uncut diamond PTO successfully delivers an isekai/vrmmo story while not falling to the nasty pecularities these stories often suffer.

It is one of the best reads you can find on this site, so give it a try and don't be deterred by it's slow start.

PS: I find it ridiculous that so many liken it to LMS, I wouldn't even put them in the same genre. Wo ever does this is either an oaf or has not read the story.

Thanks for your attention and may this review be helpful to anyone deliberating the reading of PTO. <<less

For some people, but probably not everyone.

So when I started reading this book I truly didn't have much of an expectation. In fact I felt like book eating magician was going to be more my speed.

It was new, it was from a solid release times translator.

... more>> So I dived right in, and I must say that I am truly impressed by this book so far, the story is engaging in a way that so many of these other books are simply lacking.

It's not another vrmmo book that's just all about the grind, the next level/armor/chick blah blah blah.

I have had more feels while reading these last 40 chapters than I've felt reading entire 1, 000+ chapter novels.

Now the writing style is definitely different, there's not too much back story given early on which leaves some parts feeling forced or incomplete.

Some of which is remedied later, but some hasn't been up to this point.

So if you read all that then just go read 2 chapters and get a feel for it yourself.

I'm really enjoying it but I don't like "normal" vrmmo novels, can't think of which ones I've started but dropped later on.

But I have enjoyed 1/2 Prince (which started eastern novels for me) and sword art online (first two volumes only) <<less

The people who doesnt like this novel basically have a narrow view.

The storytelling is very good, make me doubt for a second this is a web novel, the level of complexity and mystery is very good, its like reading a light novel. Which mean this web novel author have a very good planning of the story in each chapter and each character. Even at ch 43 there is many question that cant be answered, but thats the way a story should be, if some story tell the answer at the... more>> start there is no point you read till the end right?

The story concept itself is simple, what happen if NPC is also human? Even the monster like goblin have feeling and honor. But of course nobody in the right mind think like that when playing game right, we all just think the game is so realistic and keep killing the "enemy". This novel basically tell that perspective with the most realistic way possible. The MC is stumble upon the game first time, he dont have gamer thinking like normal people, so he can easily think NPC like a human, but others cant.

The story is about how he oppose those normal thinking player and got so many hardship (cause he is alone and enemy everywhere)

I recommend this novel for every people especially gamer, very intriguing and good story to open our mind about games or maybe AI. <<less

Review as of chapter 42This novel kind of took me by surprise. It is nothing like other VRMMORPG novels I have read.

What sets it apart is that 1) how much you roleplay affects your character, and 2) the game is supposed to be realistic, and therefore very hard. It is hard to the point where most players are really low level, and most NPCs are considered really really strong compared to them. Players being players, most still manage to find ways to grind levels and skills. However they do so... more>> through dubious means: having NPCs weaken their target for them, backstabbing, killing civilians, etc.

What about the MC ? Well, he's not an extraordinary martial artist, nor is he an expert gamer. He is a retired soldier (he knows some basics in martial arts but that's it), and is otherwise a rather normal adult. He does not really play games. He finds himself entering this one mostly because of comedic reasons (he has been raising his youger sister and... he's overprotective), but also because people keep asking him to play with them, because basically everyone in Korea is playing the game. After entering the game, he is surprised by how realistic it is. Knowing nothing about the game (or games in general) and seing NPCs behave like real people, he starts interacting with them as if they were real people, and therefore finds himself roleplaying. Contrary to many other novels, he does not become strong by power leveling, finding a cheat class, or anything like that. NPCs are strong because they have some actual skill, and the MC follows in their footsteps by doing some actual training (like swinging his sword until exhaustion to improve his form), and becomes not OP, but simply as strong as if he were an NPC. That's it.

So far the story has mostly been character driven, revolving around the MC immersing himself in NPC culture and growing as a person (which affects him both in the game and outside the game), and around the conflicts that arise with the other users because they behave like real villains.

I think the author really wants to make us think about who we are inside and outside of games, and how both relate to each other. It is an interesting question, and I think the author is doing a really good job. I highly recommend reading this novel.

Review now that I've reached the endOverall, this is very, very good.

Let's start with the bad: the plot is not incredible, and while the main character is very likable, the other characters fall a bit flat.

That being said, what's incredible in this story its main themes, ethics and honor, and how well they are woven into the story.

The main character is an embodiment of deontologism (Kantian ethics, i.e. the means justify the end), while the main opponent is an embodiment of consequentialism (Bentham ethics, i.e. the end justifies the means). As such, both essentially want to do good but take radically different approaches, which causes them to stand on opposite sides while neither has a moral highground over the other. This is so much more interesting than a manichean take.

This works also manages to connect with the reader on an emotional level and speak about honor and the meaning of life, allowing it to take position in this debate. As far as I'm concerned, it really works and it really got me to think about how I want to live my own life.

I really recommend it. <<less

Here is a weird novel where the writing was done quite well, the translation is superb, and yet - the story is close to being the worse i've read so far.

In the 'Explain a movie plot badly' style, i'd say its a novel about a killer who rejoined the society and in order to deal with his need to mu*der while keeping up pretenses of being a good person, the MC joined an online game where he harassed, PK other players and disrupt their game enjoyment all in the name... more>> of doing 'good'.

There is no romance. There is no character development. There is almost no story. The actual main story started around page 1250 on my reader, and ended at page 1350. The whole thing was about 1400 pages on my reader. Basically the whole story made up less than 5% of the novel.

The rest of the book is organized like an MMORPG game, where the MC simply hops about from one quest to another, mu*dering in the name of good. If you play any computer game, the MC would be the player you hate the most - the guy that disrupts your quest to PK you... for reasons only he enjoys.

Spoiler

Of course we found out later that the 'game' turned out to be a real world, another dimension. Does this change facts? No. Is the MC really a good person? no. Knowing that other players are unknowingly killing real beings does not actually push the MC to do any differently. He does not start a campaign to tell other people that they are not playing a game. He participates in wars and perhaps kills thousands of the 'NPCs' himself, ones who found themselves in the wrong end of his 'do good' campaign. I think MC is simply what you'd think of a mercenary with PTSD who needs to find his next battlefield. And this is all dressed in the author's fantasy novel where he is seemingly rescuing the weak.

[collapse]

Whether the storyline ends up interesting or not for you, what is unforgivable is the pacing. Its... unbearable. The novel never have any twists. It does not have any build ups. To begin with MC is overpowered. In this kind of writing, usually an overpowered MC is paired up with companions that may need rescuing. You know, there needs to be some tension somewhere. But there is no tension. None of the characters are endearing enough for the reader to care if they died. I have read text books that were more interesting than this novel.

Spoiler

' Its a good day to die today!!! Bultarrrrrr! ' - when all of the characters have this attitude, you don't really feel anything when they die. Good writer writes about the character, their development, their love and their hate and their regrets - and you don't want them to die. This novel has none of that. This novel is literally the embodiment of being a character in World of Warcraft. You go get quest, then you go to the next spot and get another quest. And sometimes you get a cutscene where the NPC who gives you quest may die. But you don't care really, because, it's a game.

[collapse]

I've read some really bad chinese novels where the MC just builds up Harem and be more powerful, but they were at least... gripping. They somehow managed to make you want to read the next page. This was no where near there. It took me weeks to finish this novel, and I dreaded trying to finish it. It was like work. <<less

How can one person contain such manliness? My testosterone level raised by 3 times just by reading this novel. Bul'tar! The novel was so good! I wish a sequal was written, but the author said he wouldn't write one any time soon. The extra story chapters gave a little taste of what could be, but there are still questions to be answered!

The way that the MC gets into the game and becomes a honorable Orc Warrior, imersing himself in it's history, changing and shocking the world over and over again, is really enjoyable to read. A really great novel given its short lenght and it's always good to read a good plot with such an upright MC.

Good translation as well, I never got disapointed reading Rainbow Turtle translations, both due to quality and speed, keep up the good work ma'am ^^

July 6, 2022 EDIT: This review was mostly unprofessional, but I'll leave it as it is, for now. I'll be rereading the entire novel and rewrite this entire thing - if you do something, you gotta do it right! The words you can read below were written right after the novel's finale, so I was quite emotional. The insults were removed for the sake of anyone who bothers to read this.

Original review (with a few parts removed) :

To the people who haven't even considered reading it seriously: Are you alive?

I admit that the story is a little dull at first and that I was too bored to read anything else and kept on reading this until I got engrossed with it to the point of hurling insults at people hating on it. It's a good novel if you can keep on reading until the end. The protagonist's reason for joining the game has many people saying that it's unreasonable, but you wouldn't understand it if you didn't have any siblings. The protagonist's choice of character has many people saying it's unreasonable, because it's treated as tr*sh and he has to be like other players, because he made that choice just for a prank. The protagonist's story has many people saying that it didn't become him protecting his sister, but being a form of treatment for his PTSD, as such becoming a misleading and fake novel. Regardless, people have different opinions and I respect that. I'd advise you to only look through the people who are already above chapter 50, and not those below it.

And with that, I leave this review for people who really want to read it or already read it and are looking through the reviews as I once was.

Id rate it 10 stars if I could.

Really makes you develop tiny feelings with the "NPC's" as you read it.

It starts off a bit slow, but it gets pretty cool at around chapter 27.

... more>> It used those first 26 chapters or so as a buildup. 26 chapters of strong foundation getting to know the Characters and let them slowly grow stronger. I felt it wasn't too many, but just enough.

I hope the people that read my review enjoy it as much as I did.

I read this to the very end and I loved it till the end. I am a very picky reader so just know that I very rarely rate 5/5. I truly believed this to be beyond good. <<less

Overall, this is a good and easy read. The story does evolve more around in-game life, than RL. Sometimes I would have liked to get to know Jung Ian better, but the story about Crockta is captivating in it self.

I do not normally like the "self-sacrificing" heroes, but there is just enough depth in the main character, for him to be interesting and realistic. Without becoming a complete idiot.

Pace 5/5
Story line 5/5
Descriptions 4/5
Character development 4/5

A nice story having good arcs and a pretty good balance between the VR world and real life. The main character striving towards his ideals against all odds is what makes the plot flow and keep you reading.

Some of the arcs felt weaker than the others and the revealed overall plot was surprising but not fully to my liking.

After completing the entire story, I can gladly say that it has been quite the ride. From the first chapter to the last, "Praise the Orc!" masterfully created an exciting and fulfilling universe that closely paralleled MMORPGs but took it to a whole new level.

"Bul'tar!" will never be forgotten - neither will Crockta. Humor, action, adventure, and even a little bit of love. If you're looking for your next novel, check this out! :)

I don't know why, even though I enjoyed them at the time of reading, the majority of KR novels don't leave much impression after I have finished it. So far PTO have bucked that trend. I found the first 4-5 chapters kind of slow and boring. The world did not seem interesting. But then the story started to grow on me and I am really rooting for Tiyo, the gnome. The MC is kind of boring but I like his alterego Crockta the orc. I find myself invested in that... more>> mmo world. If you like Korean novels and VRMMO then give this a try. I think it is worth it. And do not forget it is a Rainbowturtle translation. That girl has mad speed. <<less

This novel is infuriating.

The MC is supposed to be a battle-hardened soldier, yet he is a complete moron when it comes to tactical and common sense. He makes decisions over and over again that literally kill those he values the most in scenes that are supposed to be "touching" but are really infuriating because they could have been avoided IF HE JUST USED COMMON f*ckING SENSE.

Also, his idea of "honor" is literally just being a moron. He is supposed to be a WAR VETERAN but he acts like a child.... more>> He will literally rush into insane danger which he cannot possibly avoid without extreme plot armor on multiple occasions because of his "honor" even if it's because of something entirely trivial.

Utterly enraging.

Spoiler

people literally try to KILL HIM but he doesn't kill THEM because of his "honor" (some bullsh*t about how it's not honorable to kill a disarmed person)

You seem to be forgetting that this person just BACKSTABBED YOU and tried to KILL YOU!

Inevitably this comes to bite him in the back in the future. He does not realize his mistakes and continues to be a dumbass.

This is one of the better korean novels out there. So much feelings, so much depth, content. Action, betrayal, tragedy, wicked and twisted people. Do not miss out on this one. Also I am thankful korean novels are getting their inspirations from blizzard and world of warcraft. Because in japanese novels, orcs are pigs. And everytime I read orcs as pigs in japanses novels I always feel disturbed. But I grew up playing blizzard games and reading Tolkien, Robert jordan, Terry goodkind novels so I prefer orcs of the western... more>> type. Orcs like in these novels. Heck the writer of this novel probably grinds world of warcraft already now or playing hearthstone.

Also slowly but surely, we and the main character gets to discover this is not a game world. As reader we understand this early, unless you are dumb and dense.

Suggested: Yes, though it's better to think of this as a more traditional fantasy novel than a VRMMO one. Leveling and skills aren't really important from the MC's perspective after the first arc or so.

It starts out seemingly as a passable, if somewhat bland, VRMMO novel, but it morphs into a bitter struggle against nihilism and despair in the face of human nature, not just on the part of the MC but all the people he inspires. The protagonist, like those of so many other KR novels, is an embittered... more>> veteran at the novel's beginning, but unlike the others, he finds new perspective in the "virtual" world and learns what it means to be truly alive.

The MC is strong but he's not powerful enough to barrel through all obstacles. Though he can easily defeat most other users fairly early on, his enemies are armies or demonic beings and there's only so much he can do alone. Despite that, he overcomes his trials with perseverance and a large dose of machismo.

TBH, I find the important side characters to be annoying, including everyone the MC interacts with in Korea and the traveling companions he gets going north, but it doesn't really have that big of a negative impact on my enjoyment. <<less

Among the best of all the novels I've read, no doubt.

There's a trope being spread around that slapping on a VRMMO tag is a sign of poor, lazy writing as it makes it easier for the author to introduce and explain concepts without giving background, among other reasons. This is absolutely not the case here. Praise the Orc (PTO) is a novel that uses virtual reality as a device to create the setting, making special use of the dissonance between the reality and game to advance the story. More importantly,... more>> however, this dissonance allows the author to insert some masterwork character development into the story. It is such that each minor character has their own story, but it's not thrown into your face so you can digest it and forget about it later. Their story is revealed gradually and plays a role in advancing the story.

I keep talking about the story, but know that the plot of the story isn't so concrete. There are different plots and arcs in the story that focus on different topics, but the ultimate goal of all of them is to develop the main character further and further. Character development is the primary objective of the novel. If that isn't your forte, feel free to dismiss this novel now. If it is, however, know that this novel will be like a cool glass of water in the desert. It will grab hold of you. The MC will grow as the story progresses, while you will grow to love novel more and more.

Spoiler

Always refer back to the prologue. It is incredibly rewarding to see how Crockta builds up to this scene. There's also an audio reading of this book on YouTube, should you be interested.

So far this is the best novel I have read. At first it might seem like there are many plotholes and that it is a copy of lms but trust me it's not like this.

The story is completely different than lms and the plotholes are part of the story and will be filled. Also this books emotional parts are much more touching an realistic. More importantly the MC will not have a ridiculousely big number of wives (unlick ATG, LLS and etc.)

Another thing is that you fill the progress... more>> of the charecter (unlike LLS in wich the auther only thinks about more beatiful girls for the MC and forgets about his progress)

At first this look like a typical VRMMO story. However, the story seems to hint that this is not a simple game.

I think it has been hinting that you don't actually connect to a game world be an actual living world. The less you are in sync with the world then the less you can experience and the weaker you are.

There is no AI, and the game world is actually an alternate dimension and that world's god is the one running the game (She fell on earth) and has fooled everyone to think that its a game (Using its power) the creator (Of the original game) knew this that's why he hid elsewhere due to the god. The god is using her powers to keep the public in the dark but she left the MC alone that's why he is noticing things and questioning the reality.

The is a Mercenary who did a lot of dirty stuff while in war. He is traumatized, but he doesn't show it, he went through therapy during his war days, he knows the insidious nature of humans, he questions everything and always takes the unorthodox route, his personality is severely affected by his teachers of another world, instead of rational thinking and decisiveness, it was replaced with courage and honor.

Due to the bloodshed he has caused in his own world, he feels every life is important and wants to save it, you can say he became a foolish orc (if saving the lives of people is foolish than he is foolish)

The game world don't follow the set of any rules, the game company couldn't do a thing, they can't even interfere in the game worlds, they just act like they know everything but they are as much in the dark as everyone of the world.

This is just more than a game and the MC's knows this. This story is filled with testosterone and manliness, the MC has his love mode locked which gives him an incentive to not love in the game instead focus on his dream to save everyone. <<less
