Yet again, I was fooled by the reviews into reading this novel that the story has great character development, their personalities and most of all a darn good harem with each volume is dedicated to every girl in the group and their individual story arcs and how they fall in love with MC. -Now, the real question. Are you tired of MC who just never makes a damn decision when it comes to his girls? If yes, then this novel is not for you. Are you tired of harem stories with open ending or MC that does end up getting a wife, but author NEVER REVEALS IT? If yes, then this novel is not for you.
Spoiler

Reading great stories, but with disappointing ending only leaves bad taste with even more questions left to be answered, and it just ruins your whole day. You think about the ending for whole week, trying to come up with the best conclusion possible (because that is what Author wants you to do), but in the end it will be never as satisfying as reading from the novel's own creator's point of view, but I do get the idea that author wanted readers to imagine their own ending as no one will be hurt or feel disappointed, its a safe play but I call it bullshit. Why make a story in the first place if you left the most important conclusion to the readers to decide? Or are you embarrassed that you can't give us harem ending that is why you went with the stereotypical ending, then why the hell make a harem story to begin with? Just give us one female lead and one male lead with a simple monogamy ending.

It only feels like author is trolling with you, playing with your feelings and how author teases you in the final chapters as MC of the story finally decides "that he knows with whom he will go out with", but in the end it was never revealed except for the fact that he got a wife and a kid in the last chapter, but who became the WIFE FROM HIS HAREM? No one knows. Hell, I would rather have an ending where MC is running on the beach while all his girls are chasing after him, then credits rolls over something like this. I am taking an oath, no more reading on-going harem novels until or unless I know the ending for sure. 1/5 from me!

Oh boy this was a fun series to read. This is not a typical battle school harem novel you might think it is. It is a dark series that is filled with death in every novel (with the exception to key characters and the main cast). As the title states its humans vs witches because humans are afraid of magic. They contradict themselves because they also use a type of magic to fight back which are the "magical heritages", which can be summarized as magical guns. As the story starts... more>> out the humans have won a gigantic war against the witches or so they think. So they maintain a pseudo peace and suppress any forms of magic. That is what the "Witch hunters" are for and in order to become one you must go to school for it. This is where our main cast comes the "Small Fry Platoon" led by Takeru Kusanagi. They are called that way because every time they take mission they completely fail. That is not to they are awful fighters, individually they are the best of the best at what they do yet they have a quirk that holds them back. That completely changes when a girl, Ouka Ootori, joins and suddenly they have to partake in situations that make them become serious.

Spoiler

Common in all harem tropes our MC is dense which I am not surprised and expected it to happen. But what makes him unique in this novel is that he is the only sword user in the age of guns which is uncommon in light novel tropes. What makes him so good at the sword is because he can overclock his brain so be able to perceive anything around him. He is able to do this because of he trained in the Kusanagi arts that were meant to deal with magical entities with in the human limits. But in order for his body to keep up with his brain he has to practically destroy his body. The problem is solved when he gets his magical heritage. Moving on to his personality, he used to be very angry and prideful child because he thinks that the sword is the best. That gets completely crushed when he was defeated by Ouka Ootori. Now he is much more calmer and passive. But when his blood gets boiled then his original personality starts to show. In conclusion he is an okay MC with his cool moments that will try to save everyone and anyone he deems worthy but knows when there is moments where he can't do anything. 4/5

Spoiler

The first 4 volumes are what you might considered to be very cliched. Each novel is dedicated to one girl and the MC must learn their story and make them fall in love with them. But each novel is necessary for defining each of the characters personality and to see their dark pasts. What makes each one interesting is the darker aspects of magic that shown in every novel. We get to see zombies attack the innocent people. A ghost that possess and eats the individual's. Human sacrifices of the children to Summon an ancient hero. Things you don't typically see in light novels that is why for the first 4 novels I'll give it a 4/5. Now this where the actual story line takes place and the start of the Second witch war may begin. Where villains are actually your allies and allies that turn out to be enemies. OR ARE THEY!?!?!? Do not be fooled by the premise of the 5th novel because you won't be seeing the sister joining the harem because in essence she is the final super weapon of the probable main antagonist. So now we finally have and overarching objective that will last many novels. Each with its twists and turns that you might have not expected to happen. Even I don't know what will happen in the end because its that good. For this part of the series I give this part a 5/5.

So in conclusion this part gets a 4.5/5

What I typically try to find in harem novel series that has a growing, dynamic, not flat personality. That each character has a face and aren't just there to complete a trope. As stated before the first 4 novels define the characters as a whole. But it doesn't end there, they aren't just thrown to the side and left in the background just to support the MC. They keep on growing through out the entire series and to become some one completely different then the one you originally. The way they interact with one another also becomes different as they progress through the novels for the good of the group. They are also not characters that regress into the background and only let the MC own the enemies. They act as mental and battle supports that can stand side by side with the MC. When he feels down they were there to get him to stand back on his 2 feet which earns more bonus points in my books.

That is why for this harem I give it a 5/5

In conclusion I give this series a 4.5 but because there is no option for that I'll give it a 5

Spoiler

This adaptation was pure shit. Not only did they crunch 5 books into 12 episodes they completely changed the ending of book number 5. Not only did they do that but completely took out the darkness that you can feel in the novels. Very little blood is shown and the bodies of the people are off screen. Don't get me started with art style. Everything about it felt clunky, the battle sequence was pure sh*t and you can easily see the CG that was used in it. The cool pictures in the novels were utterly destroyed by the anime. I know they had a budget but this no excuse for excluding and changing many details of the novels. This was in all likely hood a promotional anime and there is no future for a second anime.

I give the anime a 1/5. Don't bother watching it

Hum, characters development is first class. Relationship development between them is actually not bad despite it having harem. Fight scene is really good while there's still some small plot hole. Other small problems is mostly in the way the author prolonged the plot and the characters thinking, and the plot armor that come with the plot hole in the fight scene. Overall, good story, very enjoyable.

This novel is pretty dark and gloomy even the translator refers to it as "darkness"...

The story has a nice flow, and has one of those dense main characters, but the focus of this novel isn't the romance or the "harem" It's about the world and how events affect this little platoon.

Highly recommended for people who like to watch characters grow and don't want something so fluffy and pure...

Definitely one of my favorite light novels. Don't let the one star review by that butthurt poster deter you. Though it is true that the person he marries isn't revealed, the story was never really about the harem, it's really a side thought.

This is truly a great action series with some great character development.

A Supernatural Battle Academy style LN, set in the modern day, with an ongoing war between regular folk and witches as its backdrop. The author does a good job when dealing with issues like discrimination & retribution, because like the X-Men, you can't wholeheartedly side with the naive "good guys".

Shame all this is interspersed between generic "For my NAKAMA!" speeches, from the hypocritical Takeru and his fan girls. Plus the harem comedy antics, like the MC tripping into some jiggling titties and inevitably doing the honourable Japanese thing by passively... more>> getting beaten by his female cohorts... I'm getting too old for this shit. Especially since I saw some potential when the story it took itself seriously, but by the end I could care less about the outcome.

At least the illustrations are appropriate. <<less

I have read all the 13 volumes and the aftermath at the side story.

It was great! The story keep progressing, they uncover the truth about the world, new characters introduced, flashback, master vs student, become overpower character, harem, fan-services, the past, the reason they did it, amazing combat detail, all the characters are used and also showed up at the aftermath, and I'm still really glad they add the aftermath, It turned to school genre to adventure genre and yet It still awesome, I cannot find any plot hole, the... more>> self sacrifice is so devastating and sad.

Oh, and they also did every character arc and I guess the main character is just too cool for my weak heart.

Spoiler

ARGGGHHH I'M STILL SAD!!! LAPIS WHY?!!!

Volumes 1-3 were a grind; however, starting volume 4 onward, you can definitely see the author improving as a writer. It's actually quite nice seeing someone improve by the volume. At least up to volume 7, every book has been pretty similar in structure:

  1. Reveal a character's past
  2. Drop harem flag
  3. Enemy from the past shows up
  4. Beat the enemy by having character over come past trauma
  5. Reveal for next volume.
All in all, the characters are likeable. World building is interesting. Wording for fight scenes are pretty funny so you need to keep an open... more>> mind there. <<less
