“Even if this universe is truly nothing more than a brutal bloody shadowy forest, we Cultivators will burn all that we have just to give off a single weak flickering spark in the darkness!

“No matter how weak each spark is, how short-lived, how small… As long as the sparks flow unabated, then one day one of those sparks will light some tinder, and that tinder shall light some fallen branches, and those branches shall set ablaze each and every last tree of the forest!

“In the end, even the smallest sparks will eventually set the shadowy forest ablaze, and illuminate the whole world!”

In a world teeming with cultivators, Li Yao, who makes his living collecting scrap metal, encounters the soul of a titan powerhouse from forty thousand years in the past.

This novel is 3.5 at best, but I rounded it up to a 4.

The translation quality is quite good in webnovel standards. The novel itself is set in a different background with cultivation mixed with modern futuristic gadgets. I think most readers would give it a 5 star when they start reading this because the author truly tries to stand out from the overused cliches of cultivation novels.

But like most reviewers said, the flaw of this novel is the info dump. I mean, information is great to give immersion and... more>> bring readers into the world. But overusing them will backfire, and that's how I feel the author screwed up. Here's an analogy I can draw from: Everyone, including you who is reading this, has a story of your life. How you grew up, bad things, funny things that has happened to you. So imagine you have a family dinner and this relative of yours starts telling you a story of his crazy adventures. The first 10 minutes or even 20 minutes, you might be drawn in and might think it's interesting. But after 3 hours of it, all you want to do is find some polite excuse and get away from this relative of yours. Except you're stuck because you've been tied to the chair and can't get away as he/she drones on. This is how the novel is in the 400+ chapters. A chapter of info/background story is tolerable, but 5 - 8 chapters of it is not. And the author keeps treading onto those 5+ chapters of background story of why certain things are happening, over and over again.

The author is also rehashing the same plots where MC disguises himself as a native of another race and then infiltrates it and makes them allies. And there's constantly schemes behind a scheme behind a scheme. Once again, the schemes are interesting at first but then as its being re-used over and over, it becomes annoying to me.

I recommend this novel because there's a lot of chapters translated but just be prepared because you might end up skimming certain background and plots like what I did. <<less

I have read up-to volume 2 and beginning of volume 3. But after reading up-to here I realized like I have read 500 long prologue (vol1), which is overturned in volume 2 or beginning of MC journey. Only at the end of volume 3 actual story starts. This is the feeling I got after reading more than 900 chapter.

or to simply say whatever you have enjoyed in first 500 chapters are overturned in volume 3.

So my thought is author should not have build the foundation 500 chapters only to be... more>> destroyed in volume 3.

And worse thing is you feel like MC character changes in worst way. If you want to know spoiler read below.

Spoiler

vol1:

MC hybrid cultivator who loves cultivating and likes to sacrifice himself for his planet (not naively) because of all the interactions he had with soldiers cultivators in life. He lives with the code "cultivators should sacrifice for commoners", there are some nice comedy, romance, friendship and struggle to survive. All these take up more than 500 chapters. At the end of volume MC warps himself with a spaceship and terrifying demon to unknown cosmos.

vol2: he lands on a chaos planet and strives hard to return home. Which takes up around 300 chapters. But only to realize he affected by blood spiral virus to take over his body. So decides to go to Blood demon sector instead of heaven sector.

vol3: he tries to go undercover and help his sector only to find deep schemes from both sides (heaven and blood sector) who don't want to end war. And the virus is still present.

so as you can see first vol plots are all not needed and second vol can also be reduced.

author only wanted write more chapters before introducing main plot. And these chapters are 1000 chapters long. Which could have been reduced to 400-500 chapters.

The story itself is good, but the writing is ostentatious. There really isn't another way to say this, but the author makes everything the MC does seem like the shit, only to write the exact same thing about something else after a few chapters. It has the typical mentality of MC=greatest and that can become annoying after a while. Although there are a few sobering moments of tragedy and realisation of how weak he really is, those are few and far between, not nearly enough to outweigh the constant hype.

When... more>> a novel starts describing a simple swing of a sword as being "meet god, slay god, meet buddha, slay buddha", there's no longer any meaning in what the descriptions are because it's likely just an extreme over-exaggeration. This supposed heaven cleaving swing occurs when the MC is at a very low level, as in he has barely just started out his journey in earnest. The author also very much likes his comparisons, legs like blades, eyes like torches, that kind of stuff. It's overly used and doesn't really mean anything.

His ideals are very much at the forefront of the story, dying for the people is good, women are weaker than men, all that typical stuff. It almost makes the story unbearable how much it's pushed. The background of the MC is someone abandoned by practically everyone aside from a very select few, and yet he acts like his whole life is devoted to humankind. While it would be understandable for someone raised through the help of the people, or perhaps someone who grew up in a caring environment, the MC is practically opposite to all of that. An orphan who has to fend for himself through his own skills and was cast off by those that used to favour him. The all-for-the-nation mindset simply doesn't fit his story.

There's a clear favour towards men in the novel, though it isn't too s*upidly extreme. Practically all people in power are men, only men are talked about in the army, every time something is mentioned, it's always "he this", even if it also applies to women and it's a woman speaking. Mind you, it isn't anywhere near as bad as in some other novels, but it is there often enough to notice. When a woman comes up and says "join us hot blooded men", the immersion does break away.

All that being said, the novel itself is solid. So far the plot has been good and character development is definitely there, it's only the author's writing style that I dislike. If you can ignore stuff like that and the occasional info dump then I'd recommend it. <<less

I've really enjoyed the novel. I don't tend to write many reviews but thought that it was worth for this one. It is definitely not the best novel ever, it definitely has it's flaws (too much exposition at times). But what I like about this novel is that it is unpredictable. The vast majority of the actions of the main protoganist follow a logic that he follows.

It is more realistic and its twists for the most part have kept me on my toes and as a result I binged through... more>> the entire novel that was published. This is definitely a novel that needs to be binged as at times not enough happens on a per chapter basis. However I have been thoroughly entertained throughout and even with its flaws I find myself enjoying it versus many other novels.

I do however wish they would come back to the core of refining as that is disappointing is left to the wayside (one of the unique things during the beginning of the novel). As of right now it is more of a fighting novel but with the mystery of the novel and the new enemies as well as the overarching current climax it is very satisfying. <<less

Overall, a decent novel. With many major flaws, mostly because it is "first" work of author, novel still is enjoyable.

[collapse]

Cons:

    1. Jack of all trades, master of... everything?. At this point MC use stuff randomly, instead of just focusing on one thing. At first he was refiner with explosives, then body builder, then gun shooter, then axe wielder, then sword master, then machine gun specialist, then saber master, then hammer smasher, then war-beasts creator, then mecha user, then user of hand claw techniques (formations), and finally giant battleship captain. Quite common in many novels, yet here it reached ridiculous level.
    2. Quite typical arrogant "geniuses" that grew in "higher zone" then MC. Lets say he was born in lvl 0. Everybody around say lvl 2 are heavenly chosen or sth, he tr*sh them. Then protagonist move to area 2, wild lvl 3 enemy genius appear. Everybody around say[...]. And so circle repeat until eternity.
    3. Contribution points. Annoying AF as every new area have their own contribution points.
    4. and 5. Major logic flaws, something like extreme nationalism of f*cking everyone. Let's start with short story. MC grew on pile of garbage, literally fought for his survival everyday, for most of his youth. He survived all this way, without receiving even 1$ of help from county. Yet he is ready to die for federation, at snap of their fingers.... System work fine, I guess.[] Another example, cultivators and country. While it have decent society with cultivators, it don't make ANY sense, for thousands of cultivators to be loyal dogs, based on nothing. [] Everything is fueled by spiritual energy. Cities, machines, ships, trains, weapons even cultivators themselves. Yet this energy is abundant in one moment, then scarce in second. Like is should be abundant, if they have it so much to even give it to mortals, yet zero cultivators ever use "grind". Instead they waste most of their time/lives, to catch it from air.[] It even make even less sense, as other can transfer their own energy to others, at no cost on any side. Yet noone "help" others cultivate.
    5. Yeah, many of above flaws just make characters in novel sometimes look ret*rded.
Pros:

  1. Others are quite young, less then 300y. Yet it get funky, when you start counting all cultivation steps.
  2. Always wining MC (4/5).
  3. Constant action (5/5).
  4. Decent (4/5) plot.
Therefore, if you can just ignore most of flaws, it is very enjoyable pure action novel.

The beginning of the novel seems to be quite different from the typical cultivation novel, the world has transgressed into a modern era where a large part of the fighting is done with weapons that use computing chips and are powered by spirit crystals. The MC is a slum kid who grew up on a dump site for damaged artifacts and has leaned some rudimentary maintenance skills from his adoptive Father which is quite confusing because he was adopted when he was scavenging the dumpsite and we know nothing about... more>> his real parents or how he grew up to the point to where he is able to scavenge without anyone caring for him.

As an MC in an cultivation Novel he of course need an op skill which he gets in form of the memory of an weapon refiner from the ancient era. The way he gets it is kind of s*upid but at least its an gradual upgrade and he can only access the memories of when the elder was at the same stage as he is currently which prevent some kind of instant powerup.

Now to the worst part of this novel: The Worldbuilding

For the 50 or so chapters you get told barely anything from its an modern era where cultivation exists until the author dumps ALL of the worlds History on you in one chapter. The History of the world can be described as two eras :

The first one is the Ancient era which is a pretty generic cultivation world you could expect in every other novel.

The second part is where my problem with this novel lies, the entire second era is completely plagiarized from the WARHAMMER 40000 Horus Heresy, which is a sci-fi/grimdark universe, with only minimal changes made in order to make it fit the cultivation background and some small name changes. This carries on in later chapter when you find out that not just the backstory but also the world mechanics and weapons are largely base on 40k.

If the Author had continued with his unique approach and not just ripped of most of his story from a book of a completely different genre and implemented these poorly this novel could have been a 4.5 or even a 5. <<less

The main character is a bland generic genius, as most of these novels. He is the master of everything under the heavens, as he can lecture anyone on any topic. It is annoying to read the novel about a MC who is perfect in everything. The plot is also very predictable as it has repeated the old cycle of slapping young masters, there is only so many times that I can read about the audience being astounded from watching our MC before I get extremely bored. Everyone in this novel... more>> fails to have intelligence, just so the author can pretend the MC is a genius

All in all, this novel is a boring predictable novel that plays it safe. The MC is perfect. The story almost writes itself, the world is never explored in a meaningful way. Most importantly the author fails to write the story with intelligence, instead demeaning the reading to view the world made of ret*rds, just so he can pretend our s*upider than average main character is a "genius". 3/5 stars <<less

A good vulture is hard to find, The MC doesn't waver in difficulties and makes him a hero of sorts.I hope the story keeps the same way but since the current arc isn't translated I got no clue how this will end up towards the end. Hate the fact can't get mtl easily. Oh well, so more about the novel then, The grit your teeth and carry on MC has the charm but the added personality gives it more flair. The tech world is too good sometimes but sometimes just... more>> as lacking if you try to be too logical, but its in a manageable region so no worries there.

PS: There's not much in depth skill level talks since MC is a hybrid who pretty much does well in two three areas throughout the novel. <<less

I have some conflicting feelings about this story. Of all the light novels I've read so far, 40 is definitely one of the most legit, or the closest to normal English story. There's a lot of world building, which I mostly skipped because I'm reading for enjoyment and I thought those were kind of boring, though I'm sure most people do like reading about all that. The science fiction aspect was quite interesting and new, especially the use of mechas, which I usually don't like in anime/manga but actually quite... more>> enjoyed in this story. Plus there are quite a few similarities to my favorite book of all time: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, so that definitely added to my love for this story.

Ultimately, I decided to stop around 500 chapters in (after 100ish chapters of LNMTL) because of the changing nature of the story. I really enjoyed the first 450ish chapters, since it was a relatively light-hearted but serious story with new science fiction details. The MC was smart, shameless, relatively OP, and reckless, and the FL was also really OP and badass. Romance was satisfactory, but absolutely a minor detail in this story. However, around 500ish, the story got a lot more complicated and darker and angsty, which I'm sure most people do enjoy because of super intense and layered plot, but personally I'm not usually in the mood for that. Really strong enemies are introduced that the MC is nowhere close to defeating, which also curbed my motivation. After reading some summaries of the future of the arc (thanks to beehungry's wordpress) and considering the fact that I'm on chapter 500 and there's over 3000 chapters and still going, I doubt that I'll be able to stand reading all that dark and serious stuff. Sigh, this is why I usually go for light novels with the Comedy tag.

Nonetheless, I don't regret picking up this novel despite the lack of the comedy tag. The first 500 chapters have been amazing and nostalgic, especially when I start thinking/comparing with Ender's Game, and I would still recommend this story with enthusiasm. <<less

So... I am pretty sure this takes inspiration from Warhammer 40k. Good news- the novel is very, very much its own thing, and possible references are mostly relegated to its space punk melee aesthetic and the far background. It took me hundreds of chapters to really even catch onto this

There are chain swords. The main character eventually gets really into 'crystal armor' (which appears to be space marine armor, basically- not quite mecha in scale, just boosts one's abilities). There is an emperor in history (ie- very, very background info)... more>> that was super powerful, created a bunch of clones (read: emperor's children), but the empire fell apart after one of the clones got corrupted by devil cultivators (read: chaos) and it staged a rebellion. There is a delicate intergalatic balance between various warring races (regular cultivators, devil cultivators, demons that eventually turn from beasts into proud young masters at higher levels)

Despite this, it is very much its own thing- that is because of its genre's focus- xianxia often avoids the grimdark since even nobodies can train and potentially become a living WMD. Additionally, the magitech setting is not isolated like in WH40K, and everyone can benefit (they have trains, iphones, internet, etc available to normal people). So the mood stays far more positive and hopeful, and avoids the grim dark. You mostly get a nice sense of firm determination and hotbloodedness, as well as mundane interactions that ground it (the sects are basically companies, with stocks and everything; it is just that sometimes they balance the budget by having the CEO hunt demons for materials). <<less

An awesome story. The setting is pretty standard with tropes galore: reincarnated MC, school exams, contribution points, missions, mechas and what not. But it's really well done. There aren't many arrogant young masters, well, not too many. Most of humanity is united against a common foe so there's not much time or patience for that. There are a few friendly proffesional rivalries along the way.

The MC is likeable, despite being a complete maniac at times. The side characters are reasonably well developed for a Chinese web novel, and I love... more>> the female lead. At this point I don't think the translation is at that point, so I won't mention much rather than the fact that the romance is based on friendship and respect, and not the starstruck-hero-keeps-saving-the-beauty type.

The action is pretty good too. He's always going up against opponents who are genuinely much stronger than himself. He loves plotting and setting traps. He gets seriously injured alot but always comes back for more.

Then there is the artifact refining. It's his ultimate goal, and a large part of his fighting style. Even though he's a strong fighter, he's even better and crazier when he's refining. This isn't just swords and spears. There are guns, spaceships, mechas railguns and all sorts of cool stuff. The MC is also fond of modifying stuff and that's when sh*t really hits the fan.

I'm not saying the story doesn't have flaws. There are. But I can't think of any now and thats good enough for me to rate it 5 stars. <<less

I mean, the start and the first 100 chapters isn't bad, it's wish fulfillment but it's good wish fulfillment...

It starts off pretty decently compared to other xianxia/xuanhuan novels, though they play out his innocent times a little too much and I guess I just dislike the patriotism that'll occur in the MC's head for 100 chapters plus. I heard he'll change on that viewpoint eventually, but like...

I... I'm just a little wary of the fact there's 3030 chapters and still ongoing, or so it says on Novel updates. Like holy... more>> shit, no doubt there's going to be a lot of fillers. <<less

Starting to lose faith in humanity because of cultivation novels? No fear.... read this....

Have you ever come across selfless and truly righteous cultivators willing to sacrifice themselves for the weak commoners in a xianxia novel? Look no more and give this a try just for that alone....I am used to reading about treachery, backstabbing, petty schemes and oppression of the weak. This novel has some of that.... but it also has something like noblesse oblige applied in a cultivation context.... both kinds of people are shown and cultivation is... more>> not depicted as a lonely path where you have to constantly watch your back in a lawless world where only the bigger fist speaks...a common enemy has a wonderful way of unifying humanity like that....I love this....

I abandoned this twice in the past before chapter ten because the beginning is truly frustrating... as someone said, persevere till Ch 12 and you will be unable to stop reading.... <<less

A unique story that relieves the repeatative Xianxia and xuanhuan cliche cultivation stories. Author mixed sci-fi into cultivation and did it brilliantly, Characters are all well done, every character have their stories, lots of filler though so if you're going to read this and enjoy you'll have to be patient. Fighting isn't the main focus here yet, at least till where I read, seriously though. there's not many fight scenes in these whole 300+ chapters, lots of training and stuffs....

Well sometimes you would feel like the main character is a... more>> machine, he can train like hell

Spoiler

(at one point he trained for days nonstop)

This is more 3.5 stars than 4 stars due to the amount of filler. For example, at this point the novel is 12 chapters into a trade fair and 3 of those chapters were spent on the MC leading a random little girl he just met around the exhibitions. That could have been wrapped up in just one chapter or less just for some world-building. After that, there's another 2 chapters from the perspective of a random prospective customer who we'll probably never see again. Thankfully, the updates are fast.

Nonetheless,... more>> the premise of the MC using his "cheat" and trying to prove the ideological superiority of his "grassroots" approach to crafting makes for a good underdog story with a clear endgame. Although the first school arc is too heavy-handed and cringy, it gets better after that. Unlike Monster Paradise, another fast-updating QI novel that I've similarly criticized for the amount of filler, there is a clear sense of where this novel is going so that keeps me invested despite the filler. <<less

I'm no writer but the writer really dropped the ball on chapter 11 and 12 causing to think about dropping the novel their are hundreds of better ways he could've put that scene together but it feel like he half assed and left it too coincidence and lucky chance which I just can't stomach in any of my novels, I mean o get it the main character usually gets lucky chances but the way he went about giving it too the MC rly killed my interest.

a cannon as his main fighting weapon. He trains his body and strength to perfection, he tempers his iron skin and defenses, he spars with a monstrous instructor every day for hours: all so that he can hold a cannon and fire it inaccurately? And I don't buy the excuse that he can't learn fighting techniques: he learns things in his sleep and in 10x speed, there must be some room for him to learn some saber techniques and such.

[collapse]

I like the world building, it reminds me of Martial World and the school system there, where students can earn credit through killing monsters in the wild as well. It matches technology with cultivation, but like the example I gave in my spoiler it sometimes tries too hard to mix cultivation with technology, so much so that it seems unnatural.

The characters are well fleshed out, but in about 200 chapters there are too many characters that do not make recurrences. The main character is definitely the main focal point, and while there are some contradictions with his ideals and personality, for the most part he is a very solid character.

I enjoyed the story for now, but I feel like it could have had more potential. Still a solid 4/5 or so. <<less

Added to my top 10, honestly the story is full of plot holes and the author likes to set the MC up so people think little of him for no reason only to overcome those opinions witch is typical of these types of novels but I wont get into those because the main reason for my 5 stars is the really refreshing world building and concepts, the way the people respect and treat the people that defend them and the "disabled veterans" it just kept me wanting to read more... more>> its release frequency is pretty high and I find myself looking on the page a few times a day to see if the net release is out.

An ordinary story, of a boy rising in the world thanks to luck but especially his fighting spirit. I particularly like this story because this young man does not make life easier, he always takes the most difficult paths, to get out even more winner. And then I like this inventive side and engineer of this boy. A very good story!
