In the 21st century, she was the outstanding world renowned darling of the field of archeology. Then, she transmigrated and became Jinjiang city’s Ji Family’ Third Miss, a small malnourished girl who starved to death. She was unfavored by her father and treated like air by the rest. Therefore, just to earn money and feed herself she had to return to her old profession – being a forensic anthropologist.

With a pair of dextrous hands, she stroked and examined those clickety white bones to solve old and dusty unresolved cases.

He was a handsome cold prince. Just to see the beauty smile, he would not hesitate to throw away his moral principles and repeatedly flirt with her.

In the end, he only received a supercilious look from her, as she declared “Prince, one touch is a 1,000 taels.”

“Then, this prince will give you 10,000 taels for a kiss!”

The story is kind of interesting. Much more "mystery" than "romance" though. I gave it a low rating because right now the formatting through (at least) the first 100 chapters is busted. I peeked at the stuff being released right now (chapter 450~) and the formatting seems to be fixed but the early chapters are almost illegible thanks to a complete lack of (or a severe underuse of) paragraph breaks. It's unfortunate.

edit: I'll add that another thing that is really frustrating about reading this is that the format of the... more>> story is "detective solves a mystery, stumbles onto another mystery, solves that one... etc etc... kind of like Sherlock Holmes set in ancient China. And, like Sherlock Holmes, the MC is portrayed as sort of inhumanly smart - that's why she can solve all these different types of cases using different types of methodologies and different ways of gathering/processing evidence. Whatever her supposed past life occupation was it in no way excuses her vast repository of random knowledge and unrelated skill sets.

But the real problem is that in every mystery and I mean EVERY single mystery there are always a bunch of twists and turns before she finally fingers the actual culprit, usually falsely implicating a few other random people along the way. If it happens once or twice, sure, that case was just hard. But when it happens on every single case she works on she just comes across as an idiot - since her first answer is always wrong.

By the time I hit chapter 200 I would have been way more surprised if the culprits she fingered first were actually guilty and the "shocking" twists had become boring and expected. It's just poor storytelling on the part of the author to use the same format for every single one of the cases they write and somehow expect us, the audience, to forget about that format 30 chapters later when they use it again. <<less

I just read a few chapter but I pretty like this novel.

  1. this novel is about coroner, the story more or less like Record of Washed Grievances but not totally same.
  2. the FL in this novel is not s*upid and naive but pretty smart and brave (always like this kind of FL)
  3. as always FL have shitty family.
  4. i dont know much about the ML because I just read few chapters and the ML just appear and not much of interaction yet between FL and ML. but the ML type like cold and scheming.
But after all this novel is worth to read....

Hihi it's the translator here.

This novel is definitely not the best out there, but it is a very enjoyable read.

It's essentially an Ancient China CSI story, with a side of romance, court politics, and family drama. The start is a little tiresome but it gets MUCH better after we leave Ji Yunshu's hometown.

... more>> Pros/Cons:

- Romance is not centrestage but the development makes sense
- There is no extreme cliffhanger (but minor ones occur regularly)
- Plot armor is not ridiculously strong
- The pacing is slooow
- The mysteries make sense (kinda) and sometimes only get resolved many arcs later
- There's a lot of fictional handwavey medicine/techniques but they make sense in-universe (also the TL points out differences to IRL)

Hope y'all give it a try and enjoy it too! <<less

This is a really unique light novel. MC background character isn't cliche and the chapters mostly consisted of mystery tag, hence this is perfect for readers who likes mystery much more than romance. MC mostly spent her time outside her home (unlike any other transmigrated MC), worked really hard and had strong sense of justice.

All the side character are well thought, and felt 'real' since they were also multilayered (forgot the correct term) and aren't superficial. The conflict built up really nicely and packed in a good way which kept... more>> me reading 119 in one shot.

However, after 119 chapters, I don't really feel the plot are moving (maybe because this LN has 1276 chapters in total), therefore it was quite tiring to continue reading this until the latest chapter.

And although there are some 'gore' tags in it, I don't actually feel disgusted, because the MC did things professionally without excessive emotion.

The romance was really slow though, to the point I don't really remember there is a romance tag for this LN lol <<less

This one is so much better than (record of washed grievances) series imo. That one is also enjoyable, but the romance takes front seat. This novel, imo, the cases takes front seat. Imagine detective conan, but instead of waiting until your grandchildren can run to finally see the ending of the organisation/shinichi's adult self, this novel reveal things in a much steadier, even if slower, pace.

About the story: yes there are some correct forensic stuffs, and yes there are also some incorrect & fictional stuffs. I'm not a forensic specialist... more>> so it doesn't bug me too much. This reminds me of tv series BONES but better, lol, because I love historical setting. Also quite holmes (the original, not the tv series) -ish, and the rate of dead body appeared is kogoro mouri-ish lol.

The downside for me is actually the FL. She is not OP, not white lotus, not green tea, also not a beauty that can topple cities. It's so refreshing! But why does she act as if she has a cheat of 9 lives? T_T I can't stand the way she went straight to danger: too s*upid, esp since the ML always becomes her saviour. She wants to stay away from ML, then don't lean on his support, ah! 🤦‍♀️ Eh okay, enough rant. I understand that at this point, it's a way to drive the romance plot. <<less

I’ve tried twice to read this novel. The mysteries are interesting and compelling. But it does drag on such detailed descriptions of her autopsies or bone examinations I felt like some of it was over the top and I just skipped. Also I’m not a fan of overly aggressive and arrogant male leads who use their strength to dictate the speed of the relationship with the FL, touching them invading personal space etc. It’s just not okay with me. That being said if you can ignore that, the mysteries she... more>> solves are interesting that’s what kept me clicking next chapter. <<less

It's a great story. The events are executed nicely and I learned terms that I never knew existed. Hahaha.

I recommend this for those who enjoys forensic science? Ah anyway, I will take a break for now because it's not really my cup of milk.

THANK YOU FOR TRANSLATING THIS!

I kind of have a love hate feeling when I read this novel. I hate the MC sometimes being white lotus, too good to non related person. And I love when she's finally being hard-hearted when she's disappointed, especially towards her family when they challenged her bottom line. But her making out trouble when she's being white lotus sometimes brings something unexpected (naturally as she's the heroine).

The early chapters are really interesting, for her being a detective that attracted the ML. From then on their relationship pace is a bit... more>> slow, the ML is so patient towards her.

Thanks volare for your hard work translations. <<less

I was reluctant to start this story when I saw the mature tag. But! I'm glad I finally decide to read this novel. The mystery in the book is heart pounding and exciting. There are a few disturbing cases which were why the 'mature' tag was up there. The politics and scheming made the story enjoyable. Moreover, I love how the romance is slowly building between the MC and ML.

I look forward to reading the rest of the novel.

definitely unique, definitely not for the faint hearted and definitely not your typical transmigration story.

The main character is intelligent and logical, but not emotionless. She's not the most loveable, and neither is the ML, but their portrayals are definitely very human, very real. I didn't find it difficult to sympathize with most of the main cast at all. ... more>>
Spoiler

I also find it really interesting that she already fell in love with someone else before meeting the ML, it's definitely an interesting choice.

[collapse]

The cases that were presented were mostly interesting, though I'm starting to lose interest with the more political ones,
Spoiler

especially after ji pei showed up. I don't know, I don't find that arc all that interesting... its more of a tearjerker tragedy and royal family fighting thing which sort of confuses me bc I came here for the crime cases....?

[collapse]
But it's still a pretty good story tho <<less

Very good. Not your typical transmigrated story... in fact it could just be a time-travel story. The MC is skilled in anthropology and forensic science, and basically you're going to read about a modern day CSI investigator in a feudal world. Besides the transmigration, there is little or no other fantastical elements, which is refreshing. Basically it is used as an excuse to give a dramatic family background to the MC, being bullied and wronged by them due to her low status.

Fortunately the story starts with the setting already established... more>> and we do not need to read the dreary process of her 'arrival', instead it opens with 5 years already passed since she entered the body. Since then she had built a male disguise to moonlight as the city's foremost expert and utter professional on identifying the dead, though the story quickly turns and give her meticulous detective skill as well.

She (despite her disguise) catches the eye of a Prince who has his own agenda which requires her forensic skills. The two are subtly attracted to each other, with the prince humorously questioning his sexuality while the MC is annoyed by her own lapses whenever she looks too hard at him.

The story is very well written. Each chapter is brief but eventful, and the dialogue and repartee is very nice to read. The story does not dive too quickly between the two MC, indeed I get the impression of a Western-style TV story-telling. You know, the type of tv series that has an overarching plot that is only advanced at the start and end of each episode, while the majority of the episode itself has a self-contained story. In this novel, the story has mini-arcs, where the prince witnesses first hand the forensic skills of his scholar. Don't be fooled by the phrase 'mini-arc', the first case alone was 40ish chapters.

Worth reading if you want something different than cultivation and magical power-ups. <<less

First off, I would like to give a shout out to 'Volarenovels' for having such an outstanding collection of novels!

This story is awesome. I do find the female lead a bit dry, but the new twist explains why she endures abuse at the hands of her 'family'. She is a forensic anthropologist from modern world, using her skills to survive and earn money. One of few times when ML is not detestable. So far he has been awesome. Romance is a bit slow. But story is captivating. Translator us doing... more>> a great job. <<less

Really nice read ! Even if some part of the plot is similar to novels abot reincarnation (the FL is abused by her family and her mother is dead), the way FL acts is quite different ! She just found a way to earn some money in order to take of herself and want to live her life quietly. Or at least it is my impression. So, we have the FL investigating cases while bearing a chatterbox of a ML, and having to take care of some troubles in her... more>> household.

The interactions beetween the FL and the ML is funny, and the way this novel is written is quite refreshing. Love it ! <<less

Raws! Almost digged my brain out on raws.

Overall, a must read story.. The FL is really put into troubles with her intelligence and the prince I believe is the ML because of an old case.. And also she is engaged to a boy, ah, their interaction is cute.. She is only soft towards him and her maid, inviting jealousy from the prince.. She is cold to everyone.. And the prince protecting her is definitely something I want to see more. It is like reading a story where the MC is... more>> worthy to be kill due to her intelligence because she is a detective and a coroner too..

Thank you for the translation.. <<less

Story is good but I didn't give five star because she doesn't deal with villian family, but she act calm and cool when dealing with corpse. But when it's come to family who bullied her and beating her. I am shock and dissatisfying that she is willing to endur beating and bully, So I dropped it. Why didn't she leave home or family who beat, bully or trying to kill her, she can earn money herself and is popular.

Just zoomed through the first 15 chapters. Despite there being many of the Female MC transmigration tropes here (Male lead who likes the Female lead [and according to synopsis, likes to tease her], cold female lead, badly treated by family etc), the writing style of the story, as well as actual forensic knowledge makes this series stand out a bit more. If you like regular chinese female MCs and forensic series like Bones, this one might be for you.

I’m totally confused on her sister. In the beginning Ji Wanxin is said to marry to the crown prince. While Ji Muqing was kind to her sister was in love with 3rd prince. Now I’m on chp 330 it say Ji Muqing is elder sister support marry to the crown prince. Ji wanxin is the youngest is in love with 3rd price. Wtf. It same person who translated the story.

It's a refreshing transmigration novel. It's the story of a woman crossdressing as a man to survive working at the yamen. Her job is to do portraits or facial's reconstruction for dead people that are beyond recognition due to burn, mutilation and other causes.

Female lead, Ji Yunshu is anthropologist that transmigrates into a unfavoured concubine's daugther. What's interesting about this story, it's that she's not into revenge, but into survival.

There's a main plot and several sub plots. Her cases tends to follow the same patern, but that's also true for... more>> many detective's novels, so I don't actually mind.

The main plot involves a huge case that entangle many other cases, as well as the male lead.

Jing Rong, the ML, is an unfavored prince who gets entagled into the heir's battle for the throne.

There's a bit of romance, but it's not all over the place.

Despite the fact that blood testing and many other "scientific technics" are a bit far fetched, the novel is a good one. <<less

To sum it up it is actually a great idea of a novel, the writing is good, but some scenes - the characters were put into those kind of sorry 'cheap drama, s*upid schemes, no logic- repeatedly' that makes you scratch & knock your head then scream WHY, like you know it could be more good than that, it has a potential.

So if you're one like me who dislike things like this but have nothing else to read - then go on

Don’t care much for the romance, in fact I scrolled pass them but the mystery threads are really intriguing and it’s fun to try to spot the breadcrumbs or red herrings the authors sprinkle all around the chapters.
