First of all, this novel isn't perfect.

There are many parts author repeating again and again. I mean there is no plot at all. Only one plot is defeating Demon King.

Comedy becoming old and cliche. Many of readers don't read it for comedy anyway.

... more>> Only thing that new is character development. Like it going toward true harem route.

Now then why I rate it 5? Because the characters of this novel are unique and funny. More you read more you wanted to know. Even side characters are somewhat good and you will love them, even cat and chicken are on spotlight.

So I will read it to the end of this series. I didn't see any serious bad points to drop this, if so I won't rate it 5 despite I have some negative impression. <<less

Reading the official translation YP, and loving it.

suggest people give the novel a go, it's been a while where I could just sit through an entire volume without taking pauses.

although it's not as funny as I expected it to be, it's given be quite a few chuckles along the way, plus with the engaging way it goes through from v1 to the end of v3 was pretty good.

i didn't touch the translation from the above which states it's up to v12 because I doubt the validity of those translations because... more>> on yuNS site it states that it is a fan fiction so whether it is the actual LN or not I'd rather read the official release from YP.

har fun reading it. <<less

-in a pinch, because that world is just unfair. Ah well. Lalatina ojou-sama has been rude for a couple of volumes, that really annoyed me, to be honest. But it can't be helped.

Spoiler

The romantic development between Kazuma and Megumin, is just cute. Even the 'third-wheel' is trying to catch up.

[collapse]

I really don't know why some people count: one guy, and a couple girls, in a group, as a harem. In my opinion, a harem is just: a man with a romantic relationship with two girls or more, and those girls are treating the other girls as family and not competition... as long as the man can love them equally tho.-
Spoiler

But since Kazuma is a self-proclaimed faithful man who is easily seduced, he is in the fine line between "harem route" and "Megumin route".

-Ah well, it can't be helped anyway.

After reading the extremely detailed summary of the WN at reddit, I am starting to wonder when will the 16th volume will show up. It just made a good cliff-hanger! Gahh, I'll wait.

Signing off,

Starts off extremely well. First 2 volumes is simply amazing. 3-4 is pretty good too. However, quality drops off from a cliff after that.

What starts off as a genre parody, becomes a bad and repetitive rom-com harem story. Uniqueness of the first volumes gets replaced with mediocrity.

Those who like rom-coms and harem stories probably would like the 5+ volumes.

I recommend 1-4 to everyone, for the rest, ymmv.

Great concept and funny characters, but the problem is that there is very little character progression or story progression.

It's going to be 5 stars until you get bored of the same gags being repeated every time. This is one of those things where it would have been better to end it early and leave the reader wanting more, rather than just milking it out until it stops making any money.

If you just go in knowing that and are willing to drop it without a resolution, it can be a great,... more>> fun read. Although you're probably better off watching the anime instead. The characters stand out in the Isekai Quartet shorts as well, where they can play off other characters with a different setting to freshen things up. I do not believe the writer is good enough to actually do their creations justice, which is extremely unfortunate.

Update: This is complete. It is sort of a non-ending, but you can't really have expected anything else if you've read any of it. I am not a fan of this author, I believe the problem is from the author being unable to develop characters and have a true plot. The characters themselves are interesting initially but they remain static. <<less

One of the best light novels ever released this decade, Konosuba is a gag-adventure story kinda like Ixion Saga and Space Dandy.

The story isn't deep and the worldbuilding is minimal but what little information that you get can be considered gems and are actually very important to the main story and it's spinoffs.

The jokes for each character as well as their quirks tends to be repeated a lot but it only makes the characters more endearing to us and highlights their character growth when it happens.

Megumin volunteering to learn other magic than explosion and Kazuma making her stay as she is.

Aqua hesitating to kill the demon lord so she can stay longer in the mortal realm despite nagging Kazuma to kill the Demon lord already in the earlier volumes.

[collapse]

All in all, Konosuba delivers everything expected for it's genre and does it very well.

P.S: Since it's a gag-adventure don't expect heavy drama or major plot developments.

I also recommend reading the spin-offs since it will give you a deeper understanding of the other characters like Vanir and Wiz, The Crimson Demons and the coolest side character of all time, Dust-sama. <<less

Really funny LN, likable characters, and anti-cliches.

Towards the end the romance paths are explored more, which is great in my opinion.

Konosuba is easily the best Japanese Isekai ever made to this date, by a VERY large margin!

First of all, it doesn't haven the best world building, it seemingly have a convoluted and a rather messy and cliched plot about defeating a Demon Lord. On the surface Konosuba is mostly a slice of life novel, with some drama thrown in every once in a while ... more>>

(until volume 15, where it suddenly took a sharp dive in quality and the once vibrant setting took a turn for the worse. I feel like the author was trying to quickly finish the novel at the end of volume 15 and reading vol 16 made this even more apparent.)

in between the comedy.

That sounds generic as f*ck right?

Well, that's just looking at this novel on the surface level, because below all that generic, cliched junk is where you'll find the true greatness of this series. It's true value are it's characters, the combination of deadpan comedy in combination with the often spot on parodizing of the various Japanese manga/anime & LN cliches & troupes. Not to mention the hilarious interaction between the many unscrupulous and anything but cliched characters in this novels. Forget about the pure-hearted gary stu, beta male harem lead here! If anything the MC Kazuma is often a parody just those kind of characters. He is greedy, lazy, weak (power wise) and has no problems throwing a dropkick at a female that wants to beat him up for some unjustified reason.

The way he acts is if a regular guy was thrown into a harem male leads role in a fantasy world, lamenting at the sheer idiocy of the setting, the moronic medieval laws, the equally moronic cliches and various troupes, all while trying to progress in the world, only to be throw a massive curve-ball every time he is about too succeed. More than often due to his party members, each of them a parody of cliches themselves. A lazy, s*upid, greedy and energetic goddess which is taken down from a the usual room where transmigrators meet god. And that was out of spite when she makes fun of the MC. So instead of the usual cheat item/ability, the MC gets a godess that's useless 9/10. The second party member is a loli chuunibyou magician, that is in love with just one spell, a top tiers spell which she can only cast once per day, thus making her totally useless before or after casting that single spell. The last one is a female knight that instead of the usually arrogant, skillful and highly combative sword "princess" that's usually the case with female knights in Japanese media, in this story is a massive pe*vert that cant hit a single monster. Then you have a whole cast of colorful side-characters (including the not so villainous villains, more than often the "good guys" makes the villains in this novel look like the good guys.) that breaks the norm of the medium, most of them are also flawed on some level and when they interact with the MC's party, great comedy is born.

Edit - I failed to mention the side storys, which are often just as good as the main novel. So don't miss out on reading them either! <<less

Great stuff. Really funny and well written as well. A top notch story, gives a similar vibe to gintama, where though it's mostly comedy, the relationships between characters really build and have serious arcs.

A useless priestess (Drunkard - and a Goddess nonetheless - but acts as an evil God), A useless mage (One magic, one use, per day - loli), A useless crusader (A complete M in the very essence of the word), A useless (but clever) rogue (nonetheless a pe*verted a**hole).

And this ^ is why it is worth your time.

Comedy.

Good story at first (5/5) It's a great comedy for kids at least till around volume 8 (7 is just bad... but 8 is still good)

But as the story goes on the characters even the background characters and the developments slowly get dumber and dumber till eventually it becomes unreadable... and no despite what you might think at first the MC is definitely a chivalry freak he just exempts "himself" from the violence aspect of it this becomes ever more apparent as the story drags out... after a certain... more>> point all the main characters just become entirely unlikable thugs going about they're daily lives... despite how good it was at first, I can't give it more than 1/5 knowing what it turns into later... <<less

Few words could describe everything this Light Novel is.

Due to it's comedic nature and standing, it's easy to perceive as a satire juxtapose to casual Shit-sekai, but to many people, and especially to me It's more than that.

"Some people are so poor, all they have is money"

... more>> "Sometimes when you have nothing, you can see that you have everything you need."

Whilst quotes due tend to be Pretentious and Artificial, I believe in this case it helps to understand the point of this review. Here's the point

Theres a big problem in the isekai part of the manga industry -[Wow, you just discovered that isekai is sh*t gj.]

And what I mean by that is that everything in this entire story that's been build up has substance, a backing to it. What do I mean by that?

Imagine this, you are a person who has obtained so many assets in the world that everything is nothing to you, what matters then, see this is the problem most isekai's have, they lack what's really important in building relationships. Sure being the demon king is cool, but having half a personality isn't

And I think that's a little bit of what people get wrong in Kazuma, sure he's a piss weak pe*vert, but he isn't afraid to speak his mind, and I think this is a little bit of what gives him so much substance. Would Aqua, Darkness or Megumin ever leave his side if a stronger man came along, easy, NO. How about a harder question, would Darkness leave Kazuma if a scummier piece of sh*t came along? Would Aqua leave for a chance to be with the party that defeats the demon lord? Would Megumin jump at the chance to be with someone who appreciates explosion as much as her?

The answer, is still no.

People aren't objects that float towards the nearest power source, Females above all, are no exception

As much as it seems there's a sexist undertone to this story, there is never a point where a female would act how a normal female wouldn't in this story, in a sense, this story is the true gender equality.

Kazuma, although lacking in some certain areas, he has the best relationships in the world. And I hope you can understand that throughout the book, whoever you may be.

Honestly I couldn't put everything into words, it's just that this book is a masterpiece in disguise 10/10

(Also you might be thinking "Why isn't he finished with the book yet". I'm saving the book for when I really need it, this is my favourite series ever, one day when I'm feeling truly lonely and f*cked by the universe, I'll come back to this book and get through whatever it is that is f*cking me so hard < 3)

This is my first review of many, I hope that one day I can live up to a big reader like Sumire <<less

Very comical. Every volume of this novel does not disappoint. And I would even read it all over again. It is just that good.

Normally an adventure like isekai story comes with a hero getting stronger and beating up the bad guys but in this novel it flat out rejects that idea. A highly quirky party formed with advanced classes and a lone lowly class MC makes this story highly interesting and unique cut out from other isekai novels.

Trust me, read at least the half of the volumes and sooner or... more>> later you'll be reading it through the end. <<less

I've been a long-time fan of Konosuba for years at this point and needless to say, I have an unbelievable amount of fondness for the books.

All of the characters are endearing in their own annoying ways and Kazuma is the perfect counter to play along with them. The banter between every character is enjoyable and keeps me hooked to turn page after page. Even the side characters manage to be just as memorable as the main cast! (I love you Cecily and Yunyun)

To Konosuba enjoyers, please read the side... more>> story with Megumin and Yunyun!! I almost finished all 4 of them in the span of a day.

Although I am a big sucker for this series, the ending felt a little incomplete, and the author even mentions it himself, lol. I hope for a continuation to wrap up the books completely, leaving no loose ends.

Thank you Konosuba. <<less

Do you know how the first sunlight after weeks of heavy rain feels like ?

That's how I felt after reading Konosuba. Lets face it, nowadays the isekai genre is in trend. Loads of isekai manga, novel, anime are coming out every month. However, 90% of those isekai are tr*sh, literally tr*sh. You have a ridicuously OP protag, ridiculous harem and more nonsense. Konosuba, however is completely different. You have a protagonist who is as average in power as just another guy, but with his unique skills and unique team he... more>> becomes pretty strong. All characters, even the side characters seem to have some semblance of a personality.

Ooh, the comedy is the main point of Konosuba. The interactions between Kazuma and his party, and with other side characters is golden. It made me laugh hard. Plot is also not bad, for a comedy-focused novel. Also romance is also well done. Don't be misguided by harem tag. You will get a nice surprise at the end.

This is an absolute must-read for those who have fed up with normal isekai tropes and are looking for a change. <<less
